December Blog Contest Winner

Thank you again for sharing all of the wonderful holiday traditions that you and your families have. I know that there are a lot of us who picked up ideas for one or two (or ten) new ones! I picked a number out of the hat and the winner of the fun yarn package is: Jan! (no blog attached to Jan, so I can’t send you to “meet” her, unfortunatelyy. Jan – if you have a blog, leave it in the comments for us!)

DSC00279.JPGFact for the day: Did you know this about Starbucks coffee bags? You can hold it horizontally and push both sides in, then smell the aroma of the flavor of beans inside right where the green logo is. Kind of a scratch and sniff, without the scratch part. DSC00280.JPGI have often gone in there and wondered what the difference was in all the names/varieties. Now I can smell the difference. Is that a commonly known little trick and no one ever told me? Knitting Daughter (aka Starbucks Barista) told me. She also brought me a pound of their Anniversary Blend. She’s a good daughter.

Have you seen Wendy’s post on “Knit From Your Stash in 2007″? Well, when I started reading through there, I was already having minor heart palpitations. After all, I DO sell yarn and I would like to keep this business going in 2007. :-) But luckily, as I read the rules, there was a little exception for sock yarn. Specifically, it said “Sock yarn does not count. You think we are made of stone?” Whew! Of course it doesn’t count, because sock yarn doesn’t count as stash. (Need a refresher on those reasons? See my post here.) In light of that, I thought it might be handy to have a little reminder button to go with your “Knit from your stash 2007″ button. (Yes, you’re free to take it and host it on your own website.) You know, just in case you start feeling a little blue about not being able to buy yarn when you look at that first button. Then, you glance to the button below and realize – “Hey – but I CAN buy sock yarn!” Then I want you to hop right over to The Loopy Ewe and shop to your hearts content. We love you here and we’ll do our best to keep you stocked up on wonderful sock yarns throughout “Knit From Your Stash” and beyond! (And just think, when Knit From Your Stash is over, you will also have fun re-supplying that stash from the ground up.)

DSC00281.JPGOn the knitting front – I finished the gift mittens and will now work on finishing the gift socks. Photos will have to wait. College Boy and I are watching Season Five of 24 (while poor Knitting Daughter studies for high school finals and poor Wonder Husband works.) I’m planning on getting in some good knitting time as Jack Bauer saves the world.

  1. I, too, was somewhat horrified to think someone wouldn’t be buying sock yarn. I mean, really! I thought my stash might be excessive until I realized I have about 80% sock yarn, which doesn’t count as stash. Yippee! Let the buying of all yarns continue! (Love the button!)

I didn’t know about the squeeze and sniff aspect of the Starbucks bags either. Everyday there is something to learn on the internet!

My yarn snipping, project stealing, needle biting kitties are not confused by meow sounds from the computer but they are confused by doorbell, phone, cat and dog sounds coming from the teevee!

  2. A friend told me about the Starbucks squeeze and sniff about a year ago. I tried it in the grocery isle of my local Giant Eagle, but I don’t think it works on the “generic” bags, only the official ones in Starbucks. I did get some really strange looks though.

Sent you an email, and 2 pixs (Sweet Georgia – fondant socks), also Yarn Pirate arrived this afternoon – loooooooooooooove the colour and so nicely named.
    HoHoHo

  3. Mmmmmmm Anniversary Blend….so delicious. I remember getting so excited when the first shipment of that stuff would come in to the store back in my days as a Starbucks employee.

I’m contemplating the Knit from Your Stash thing, but just don’t know if I have the willpower! I know the minute I sign up, I will find some sweater I want to knit and need yarn for.

  4. Does she bring you a pound a week? The Christmas Blend is supposed to be really good. I will have to try the squeeze and smell method next time I am at Starbucks – like tomorrow!!!

And sock yarn never counts as stash. It has its own special place in heaven. More daughter having to study while bg borther gets to relax.

  5. No worries – I will be fully support the yarn industry in 2007. I will be knitting from my stash too – once I buy it, it gets home, it touches the other yarn I have, it IS my stash. No yarn diet for me as I stated in my most recent blog post – this is what I believe we should be doing!!! Happy Holidays!

  6. Cool trick about the Starbucks coffee bags. Who knew!

No point in pretending I will only knit from my stash in 2007. I know good and well I will buy plenty of yarn no matter what, sock yarn or otherwise. Hehe. However the ideas are always good. Mom says I will not use my yarn before I die which is SO not true (unless I die pretty soon God forbid). She wants to measure the time. I said she has to measure a turnover rate cause the yarn buffet is never ending. :>)

2 holiday socks to go but I did squeeze in a pair of sweet little fingerless gloves this weekend. (From Knittys Summer 2006 issue.) Way easy and fast knitting. They are a stocking gift for mom so it counts as gift knitting I guess.

  7. I finished my Christmas shawl yesterday, YEAH! Unfortunately it smells like the bowling alley because that’s where I was when I finished it. Heh, heh… That’ll come out when I wash and block it.

Still have a hat and a possible scarf to go. (Recipient said she was “okay” with the color; maybe I’ll just buy something instead. =P)

    Love the button!

  8. Awww…I have that S’more’s cousin hanging on my tree! Amidst the sheep and the wolves. Hey! They live in harmony at my place! Love the Sock Yarns Don’t Count As Stash button!

  9. I really like the button reminder about the socks – I just joined a sock club and was looking over your site for some more retail therapy…. gotta treat yourself too during the holidays right?

  10. haha, I definitely saw the knitting smores ornament at the store yesterday afternoon and told my mother that it reminded me of something you would appreciate. oh, and i hear that the sniffing thing is a piece of knowledge to which only the truly caffeinated, *excuse me* “sophisticated” are privy. ;)

  11. Oh heavens, I would never in a million years ever consider just knitting from my stash. It’s so much fun to buy new yarn, and there are so many beautiful yarns out there that I haven’t tried yet and can’t wait to try them. To me, 1/2 the fun of knitting is buying new georgous, soft, colorful yarns. Heee, I love having a pretty and colorful stash.

  12. Whew!!! Good Lord! I am happy sock yarns don’t count as well. I am thinking of joining the Knit From Your Stash group as well….but am not sure if I want to admit I have a problem just yet. ;0) At least not until I have hit all these December inventory sales around here. (evil laugh inserted here) My Celtic Swan needles are fabulous, by the way. I have socks on them already. Thanks so much for the extra trouble!!! Happy New Year!
