Solid colored yarn - my new addiction….and a CONTEST!
I’m smitten. I absolutely love this new (to us) Louet Gems line. Here is my Grape sock, finished up yesterday. It’s the Waving Lace Socks pattern from Favorite Socks. It was very easy to knit and I love how it turned out. It has a long cuff and I have long feet (size 11) and you can see in the photo the amount of yarn I had left over from 1 skein. (I followed the pattern exactly, and knit with #1’s.) Good to know that I can get by with 2 skeins for these socks. They are so comfortable to wear, too. You’d think that since I like them so much, and the color is one that I have not knit before, and they were easy to do, that I’d jump right in and make the twin, right? (Those of you who know me, know what’s coming…..) Of course I started another design last night. Well, I wanted to try the Louet Sportweight (which really is a delightful sportweight - not very heavy. I’m still using a size 1 needle to knit it.) Now I’m trying out the Meida’s Socks with Sage. This pattern is really fun to knit, too.
And then after this one, I think I will have to try…
A Cookie A design! Because her designs are absolutely over-the-top amazing, and we just added all of them to our pattern section at The Loopy Ewe. This is a new venture for Cookie (selling her patterns - not designing them) and we are her first wholesaler. My only problem will be deciding which one to start with. They’re all incredible. They all call for Louet Gems, too - so it’s a good thing we have the entire color line. (Ahem. It’s a good thing we have the entire color line ordered. Still waiting on the other half of the colors, but they have shipped so we expect them any day and will get them up immediately. This is one of our “big lines”, so barring any unforeseen problems, expect us to have it in most all of the time.)
I also like yarns that are semi-solid - meaning that the color intensity/shade varies throughout. You’ll see this in many of the wonderful J-Knits yarns, as well as All Things Heather, Apple Laine, and Claudia Handpainted. We’re also getting a great new line of semi-solids from sKNITches next month. I have a sample skein and it’s beautiful. You’re going to love it. So for those of you who are finding fun lace patterns to knit up and you want the stitches to pop, try some of these different solids.
Of course that got me thinking. Why do I love knitting socks? Well - there are lots of reasons. They’re portable, they don’t take a whole lot of yarn, they can be as challenging or as simple as I want them to be, they’re relatively quick to finish, etc. But one of the biggest reasons for me is that it allows me to try all different kinds of techniques and patterns without having to commit to a whole sweater of it. It is a great way to experiment and learn. That brings me to this month’s contest. Leave a comment and answer this question: What do YOU like about knitting socks? I will do a drawing next Monday to see who wins this month’s fun “Loopy Loot” package - so get your comments in!
I did a little re-stocking today - more Wildhorse Farm patterns, more Zephyr stitchmarkers, and more Loopy Totes. Of course there is always more, more, more in the works!

What do I love about socks? As a new sock-knitter, well… I have to say it’s all the colors available, and all the variety of things to do with it. I haven’t tried “real” clothing yet, and I’m not sure I really want to — I absolutely love color and socks are the perfect things to get so many colorful and interesting designs in… and if I don’t really like it so much, oh well! I think I’d be delighted with anything I make, really, so that’s not much of a problem. I hate store-bought socks in different colors/patterns and yet I am SO SO SO happy with my first pair of knitted socks in colors I’m not entirely fond of… it’s just so charming!
The colors. It’s all about the available colors and there are SO many…

I love socks for all your reasons, especially trying new things on a relatively small item - plus sock yarns are so beautifully made, all those colours and squooshy soft fibers. I love the engineering of a sock, the different heels and toes you can make, the beauty of a well-turned heel, and how few ends there are to darn in.
I also love that I have found a whole community of crazy people just as nuts about sock knitting as I am!

I like how unique handknit socks are, but also how they make awesome presents. After the 3rd scarf, most people have had enough. But every person I have knit a pair of socks for, requests more.

I like socks in general. Years of wearing school uniform tights have made me adore the luxury of socks and no more tights … blech!
I love the originality of handknit socks … nobody is going to have the same as you, and the yarn possibilties are endlessly tempting. Thanks Sheri

My reasons match yours, Sheri–the portability, the ability to try new things, all the wonderful choices of yarn. I wear socks a lot, so I get a lot of use out of them. I also love that I can throw them in the washing machine. (I stick to superwash sock yarn, obviously.) And my family likes to get handknit socks!

As well as the reasons mentioned above, like trying all the amazing yarns and colours, I love to knit socks because of the timelessness, the tradition behind it, as though knitting socks strikes some sort of collective unconscious chord with knitters from the past. Also, I have yet to make a pair of socks that aren’t welcomed by the recipient, loved and worn frequently. Unlike sweaters which can be the wrong fit or unflattering, handknitted socks always look and feel great (as long as they’re made with the right yarn–like the kind you sell, Sheri).
PS –Will you be adding the Cider Moon patterns, too?

I love knitting socks because of the challenge of all the different patterns and techniques. I can even knit in the car, on the plane and at the Doctors office. I mostly love trying out all the great sock yarns at the Loopy Ewe.

I love socknitting because it is so portable! Plus of course the great socks and….I can get as complicated (lace and texture patterns) or as simple as I like. Handpainted and self-patterning yarns are so great when I just want to knit my “basic” sock and have a small project to turn to when I’m tired of counting lace in a shawl or complicated cable patterns. And…when my hands or shoulders are tired from working with a bigger projects, socks just feel so comfortable and easy to work with in my hands
LOVE to see that you are carrying Cookie’s patterns! She has been and on and off point of discussion in a sock group that I participate in. We’ve all loved her patterns on knitty and have wondered when she will have a book (publishers out there, pay attention!) or her own patterns available. Good for her and great that you’re the first to carry them!

What’s not to love about knitting socks? They’re incredibly portable, and make great commuting knitting. You can make them in all sorts of yarn, and I get to work with some incredible patterns AND have a finished object in a week or so. (I’m notorious for starting and not finishing, but so far I’ve finished all the socks I’ve started.)

I love knitting socks because they are so easy to carry with me. I hate to be out and about with nothing to do if I have to wait. Also, they are a way to make a project that I can easlity finish in a short amount of time. I guess I am an instant gratification girl! And if I want to be realy honest about it, I like when people are fascinated and/or impressed that I am so clever!

I love trying different fibers and colorways, and it’s just so much easier to pony up for a really “expensive” skein of sock yarn (like Posh, for example, as a higher-end yarn) because you’ll definitely get a full project out of it. There’s an Artyarns cashmere that I love, for example, but at $37 for a 160 yard skein….what am I going to do with that? And while I’m not going to wear a bright green/black/purple/blue/yellow sweater (ow, my eyes!), the same colorway would make my favorite pair of socks!! And they can be as complex as you could want them to be, or simple enough to knit in the dark!

I love to knit socks because I can get them done faster than any other knitting project. I am not the fastest knitter nor do have a lot of time to devote to a project. I can get a pair done in about a two weeks.
I also love the fact that I can buy a whole bunch of yarns in different colors. A pair of socks doesn’t set you back $100 to make a pattern.

Hi all,
I like socks because I tend to tire of a project easily. (I had this problem in my work life as well…) Many times I just knit until I’m on the foot…and then frog them…
Then on to another one…so many yarns and patterns to try…. (Like, “so many books, so little time…”). You have to be relentless. Ha Ha Ha….
Also, I feel it connects me with all of the knitters for the soldiers of the WW’s…they knit many a sock for the servicemen.
Anyway…I am hooked and not afraid to admit it.

I love (note: love, not like!) knitting socks because of the yarns. I can splurge on a divine sock yarn for less than $30, and have no guilt, since I got two garments (one for each foot!) from one skein. I can pick out colors that speak to me, and not worry about what it will go with or if I’ll ever wear them. Add in the portability factor and the fact that every time I put them on, I feel pampered, and there you go!

I love knitting socks. I especially love knitting socks with hand dyed yarns because most of the time, the colors are pretty much one of a kind and the striping/poolong/flashing is always unique and special to the pair of socks. Only with hand knit socks will you get the individuality that makes them so amazing. Also, you can take them anywhere. I always have a pair of socks OTN in my purse (I have dubbed them purse socks) that I knit on when I am stuck waiting for something. You can’t do that with a sweater! Also, I find the time it takes to knit plus the cost are what really puts me off bigger items, such as sweaters, blankets etc. And, socks are something that you can enjoy at any time of the year. And that’s why I like socks!

My top 3 reasons:
a) They only require 4(ish) ounces of yarn… more bang for your stash buck!
b) They are of course portable, and don’t weigh you down, or over heat you. (hello, I’m in Texas thankyouverymuch!)
c) They are always always appreciated! Even if someone isn’t really a handknit fan, I’ve found everyone LOVES a pair of colorful hand knit socks.
All around, socks are an ordinary luxury.
Love your new grape socks, Sheri!!

I agree with all the readers and you about sock knitting. The portablility of the project, the different techniques to try out, the different yarns to try out, and the fact that they make a very welcome gift are the best parts. Also I like the fact that they are not boring. If you are getting tired of knitting the top pretty soon you are turning the heel, then knitting the gusset and than you are on the home stretch! I haven’t figured out why my second sock always looks better than my first??

I love socks because I can knit things to wear on my feet that I would never wear anywhere else on my body. I love fun colors and patterns, but would never make myself a sweater out of hot pink, purple, and orange stripes. But if I put it on my feet, I just might get away with it…..

I started knitting socks so that I could have socks that fit properly and were made from wool. From that very utilitarian reason, an absolute obession has grown. I love the yarns… the colors! the fibers! I love all the different kinds of needles and techniques. You can try so many things without making a large committment to time or materials - such as a sweater would be. I love that you can do what you want without too much fuss - the ribbing you want with the leg pattern you want with the heel type you want. You can make them fancy or simple, silly or serious, bright or sedate. Each sock is a mini engineering project and it is never boring! And in a very resonable amout of time you have SOCKS! Who doesn’t need socks…? Well, I have had people say they don’t wear them, but what’s up with that?

Why I love knitting socks:
1. They’re portable.
2. I can knit fancy lace and cables and it doesn’t take me a year to get an FO!
3. People in my family really like getting socks as gifts.
4. I can buy the nicest yarn available without feeling too guilty over the price tag.
but most of all:
4. I’m a Martha sort of sweater person. Even my brighter sweaters are still pretty sedate (asparagus green is the wildest I’ve gotten so far!). I’d never knit (or wear) a sweater from bright bright bright handpainted yarn. I LOVE bright socks (and hats and gloves) though! Socks let me be wild and crazy with color and texture. And the same goes for the rest of my family–my mom wanted a grey sweater, but she was happy as a clam over a pair of poinsettia-pink-and-olive-green socks!

What I love about knitting socks is the availability of new sock yarns. There are some beautiful handpainted and hand dyed yarns that make a truly decadent sock. There is no way I could knit myself a sweater out of the same yarn, but socks - no prob!

I love to knit socks for several reasons:
(1): They are fun to make….it’s always fun to see how the yarn knits up.

(2): Socks are cheaper and faster to make then say something like a sweater. There’s no way that I could make myself a wool sweater for $25.
(3): I’m completely addicted to sock making.
(4): I now have socks that fit my feet.

I love to knit socks because I’m ADD. I cannot give up enough energy or time to something huge or mega time consuming because I’m going to be off on a tangent before I cast on if I’m not careful. I also love the simple sock construction. There are no seams, no crazy joins, steeks, nothing more difficult than the gussett. Plus, I’m a larger lady, so if I want to knit clothing items, I’d have to stop paying bills and rent to buy the yarn, and I’m just not that into living in the streets and eating off of the floor!
Also, I can swath my feet in colors that would make me look like a one float parade otherwise!

Sheri,
Thanks for adding Cookie’s patterns–I saw she had you listed as a retailer on her site today, so I was eagerly looking forward to getting the patterns from you. Yeah!
Why do I like knitting socks? (1) They’re small and relatively quick (and my attention span seems to be getting shorter the older I get). (2) Easier to carry around. (3) Get to try out different techniques. (4) Sock yarn (theoretically) takes up less room in my stash, although it’s quickly expanding thanks to all the wonderful yarn you keep waving in front of me. (5) They have enough different “parts” to keep my interest (that attention span thing again). Pretty much “ditto” to the rest of the comments.
Thanks, Sheri

I love knitting socks because I live in Texas.
If I knit myself a pullover sweater, I can wear it in January, a little of February, and a little of December. A cardigan is a little more versatile, but if I make it out of wool, I’m still not going to be able to wear it much of the year. (The air conditioning in my office is set cold but not THAT cold.) Lace shawls are gorgeous and have a longer season, but are not terribly practical when minding one’s eight-year-old son.
But socks? I can wear wool socks from early fall to late spring; a wool/cotton blend is tolerable even in July. Socks are the only knitting I can use year-round, and the only knitting that’ll be washed regularly enough that I don’t have to worry so much about it being eaten by bugs (unlike my lovely soft merino mitts, which got bug-chewed before their first winter). Plus, they’re small enough to fit in my fanny pack, so I can always carry one around even if I don’t want to tote my whole knitting bag.

I love knitting socks because of the portability of the project. Plus, you should see the faces of the other commuters on the NYC subways when I’m on there knitting socks…standing up….with the yarn coming from inside a little bag around my wrist! They look at me all weird because of the tangle of wires and string - because you know most muggles don’t see it as YARN unless it’s THICK ACRYLIC and also, 99.9% of muggles are not familiar with circular needles.
Oh, and several have asked me what the HECK am I doing?! LMAO!
That’s why I love knitting socks.
PS: The fancy yarns and funky colors worn under my suits at my stuffy lawfirm also make for freaky looks at work! :o)

I love knitting socks like everyone above because of the portability. I love the different yarns, colors, textures, and patterns. The best part is finding The Loopy Ewe so I can buy more sock yarn, patterns, accessories, etc for my sock knitting addiction.

The reason I love knitting socks is because you can knit with limitless types of patterns, yarn brands, and colors, and still never get tired of knitting, because of all the limitless possibilities. It makes me feel so creative. The best part is knitting in public-most people are just awe-struck because you are using sooo many needles. I look at them and say, “It’s so easy, if I can do it, you could too.” These are just a few of the reasons I love knitting socks, plus I’m addicted. Lee

As for socks… lordy, what’s not to love? They’re versatile; you can knit them plain, with a simple rib, or go for a complicated lace, texture, or colorwork pattern. They’re small, and you can schlep them just about anywhere, even in the bath. Not much yarn is needed, and this is an added bonus because you can buy more, varied colors. Socks are also quicker to complete than larger projects. Most of all, they’re fun to wear and show off!

Ode to Knitted Socks
Socks are pure perfection to knit.
I love that I can knit a pair of socks with one wonderful skein of yarn.
That I can cast on and off and never have a break in finished garment.
The perfection of a knitted heel flap and a well-turned heel.
The decrease magic in a toe and the joy of grafting.
That they will always impress a non-knitter who sees them on the needles.
As I knit in the round inside out, when I turn my sock to graft my toe I am met for the first time with the wonder of my finished sock, to see the yarn created into it’s mission in life - a sock.
For someone to whom finishing in knitting is a chore, the knitted sock is one of life’s moments of wonder, after the grafted toe is finished and the cast on is woven in, you have a finished garment.
We all have feet and I don’t know anyone, knitter or not, who does not apprectiate the joy of hand knitted socks created from a wonderful hand painted yarn, they are a work of art whether in progress or on the blocker waiting to be worn.
(with deepest respect and apology to Keats and Browning)

I love sock knitting for many reasons. But I think one of the biggest has to be the yarn selection. All the colors, all the stripes, all the pattern possibilities. I always feel like I want one of everything when it comes to sock knitting and I want one in evey color(as long as it is cheerful!). I am alwasy trying to show restraint when it comes to casting on a new yarn for socks…..when do I ever feel such desperation to cast on a sweater? Never!!

Initially, I chose to take a sock class at my LYS to challenge myself to learn new techniques. I soon realized that there were many other techniques I could incorporate into sock knitting - cables, lace, color, etc. The possibilities are endless!!
I learned the traditional way to knit socks using DPNs - then I learned how to use 2 circulars - and finally I learned how to make them toe up (and finally mastered short rows)… I could no longer contain my excitement - I wanted to knit socks all the time. That is why I declared 2007 the “Year of the Socks” And, the best part?! — I discovered your wonderful site and was exposed to more wonderful, colorful yarns! I think I’m in heaven. : )

I’ve always loved how socks provide a “secret” way to express your personality, obvious only to the most observant of friends. Knitting my own socks, and knitting socks for those I love raises that whole experience to the next level, adding luxury to a dose of spicey, hand-made, custom fitting delight. I’ve ruined my husband, who now wonders why every pair I have on the needles is not for him. Besides, sock yarn really isn’t “stash”, right?

I like knitting socks pretty much for the same reasons already named above. The yarns are beautiful and I’ll buy yarns in colors that I wouldn’t wear in something larger like a sweater. I love socks for a variety of reasons.
1.) They’re a project that’s easy to pick up and put down. I have three kids ages 2 and under - I need to be able to pick them up and put them down without worrying about it.
2.) Knitting through the different parts of the socks keeps it interesting without a huge investment of time.
3.) They’re great design opportunities! There are so many ways to do different things with stitch pattern and shaping it’s hard to get bored.
4.) It’s a great way to use handpainted yarn without worrying about how pooling will affect the look of your waistline, etc.
5.) I LOVE how they feel on my feet. They are so DARN comfy it’s just impossible not to knit them!!!

I like that they make whoever you give them to feel special.
I like being able to try out new yarns and stitches on a small scale.
I love their portability and the fact that I can knit a round or two at a time - I don’t have to have a huge block of time to work on them.
I read somewhere that hand knitted socks are like good lingerie - no one but you may know you are wearing them but they make you feel special!

I’m a new sock knitter (only about 6 months) (strange as it may sound with all the purchases I have made at The Loopy Ewe). I love it for many reasons. It’s portable. They can come with me where ever I go. The choices for sock yarn are just amazing. (I always see one more I want to try!) I love the colors and the feel of the yarn. I love that I have a wearable item in such a short time. I finish a pair about every two weeks and that time is shortening. I have come to love the feel of knitted socks on my feet. It’s like getting an all day foot massage. Even my sweet man loves them and likes when I knit them for him. They inspire me to try new things stitch wise.

Funny. My sister-in-law just asked me this same question last week.
I like knitting all sorts of things, but socks are addictive. Why? Well, for one, they fit in your purse. I can whip out Uncle Traveling Sock anywhere — in the car dealership, the doctor’s office, a restaurant, in traffic — and not have to worry about needing acres of space to shuffle about parts, patterns, and notions. All I need are my needles and my yarn.
I can knit socks in wacky and wild colors with little risk. Colors that I’d never wear on top are snug and hidden on my feeties.
Socks always fit. I don’t have to agonize about sleeve length, armscyes, a collar that won’t go over the head, etc. Even if they’re a smidge too big they make good sleepytime socks. And they gift well.
I can always have a sock going without causing too much upheaval in the project queue. It helps my hands to shift back and forth between needle sizes on a regular basis.
And I like knitting on a sock in public and getting comments from passers-by. From the curious (”whattya workin’ on?”) to the incredulous (”a sock? no kiddin’!”) to the awestruck (”gee, I could NEVER do that…”), it’s a good icebreaker. EVERYONE wears socks. Well, except my Mom. But I’m working on that.

I love knitting socks and these are just some of the reasons:
1) Socks are the most usable item (everyone needs socks)
2) Knitting socks provides endless possibilities as there are different techniques by which a sock can be knit (i.e. cuff down or the tow up, socks can be knit on double points, 2 circular needles or on one long circular needle
3) Socks provide endless design options as you can knit a sock in any stitch pattern and then use a different cuff, heal or toe option to create a unique piece
4) Portability - socks are truly one of the most portable, go anywhere project (I love peoples reaction to being told that you are working on a sock, it truly can be priceless)
5) Endless yarn options with a rainbow of colors available
Need I say more…. I love knitting socks…

I am a new sock knitter. I have quite a collection of sock yarn, because I bought sock yarn quite a while before I actually got the courage to try to knit a sock. I have a fear of double points (it’s getting better). I love knitting socks because it gives me a rush when everything works out and I feel really proud of myself for finally knitting with double points.

I love knitting socks because I can try new things without too much investment. I learned to cable, knit lace, and truly make a customized fit by knitting socks. And I don’t have to worry about ruining a whole sweater’s worth of yarn. Plus, they’re portable, practical, and pretty!

The thing I love about sock knitting is the colorful yarn–I have the opportunity to use colors I wouldn’t use for a sweater for whatever reason. I also love that no matter how conservative my work clothes are, I can smile to myself knowing that I have on the most outrageously colored socks under my tailored boots…or better yet, that my socks don’t even match my outfit, but they feel good on!!
I guess it’s kind of like have wild-colored underwear on…..no one sees it, but it puts a spring in your step just a bit more just by knowing you have it on!!

I love to knit socks for two reasons: 1) they are fast and I get bored easily. 2) when knitting socks it’s not just knitting, there are different parts to socks. When I get bored with knitting the heel flap, I get to turn the heel. When I’m tired of picking up gussets, I get to decrease for the toe.

I am a color whore. I adore colors in all tones and hues. The idea of buying a skein or perhaps two of as many colors as there are in the rainbow and the fact that sock yarn is soft and sqooshy just makes me an addict. I adore the portability of the project, the quick finish of the project and the appreciation of the receiver of the socks. I only have one pair of socks for myself!!! I’ve knit dozens of socks but only one pair for me! I plan to rectify this during 2007.
As a bonus, sock yarn is good for shawls, socks, sweaters, hats, gloves and much more. It’s probably the most versatile yarn ever and it’s almost exclusively what my stash is made up of.
I’m on a bit of a diet this month but there are only 11 more days in the month and then I plan to splurge!!! Cookie A patterns, Louet and more!
Now, my wish list, could you please consider Jitterbug as a new line? And of course, Socks that Rock I do hope for all my yarn purchases to be made at the Loopy Ewe forever!

I’m a fairly new sock knitter, having only knit 7 pair so far. One for each of my children, 2 for me, and 2 for my husband (ok, 3 for him, but I didn’t know one pair wasn’t superwash, washed them, and ended with a pair of felted booties that fit a child….fortunately, she likes them!)
My 2 pair of handknit socks are my ABSOLUTE favorite socks. I wear a size 9.5 - 10 shoe. Storebought socks are tough to find that don’t shrink and have less room in the toe area than I like….hence, I have discovered, socks knit to fit! Love the colors available, love the variety of yarns and patterns, can’t wait to try them ALL…and keep hoping I’m in time when you have a shop update to get some great yarn!

I love knitting socks for these three reasons:
1. The yarn is awesome. And relatively inexpensive (versus a sweater) for a pair.
2. I can try new patterns.
3. Everyone thinks it’s cool! They can’t believe that a person can make their own socks. And I can take them everywhere…

I used to think that I knit socks for all of the reasons given - portable, quick, a variety of choices in stitch pattern - or just plain. But I discovered this winter (my first winter to have handknit socks!) that the number one reason I knit socks is that I love to wear them. There’s nothing like having a bad day (especially if it’s a Monday!) and glancing down to see one of your favorite pairs of handknit socks. Sometimes the colors cheer me up, other times it’s the knowledge that I made those, goshdarnit, and so what if today sucks, I have awesome socks!

I love knitting socks! What’s not to love? One skein of yarn and a relatively small time commitment for a finished project, the looks on people’s faces as you wield your slender yarn and tiny needles, the fact that you can work on them even in sweltering weather, the absolute comfort of having them on your feet. But most of all, it’s the yarn—the wonderful soft, squooshy feel of the yarn running through your fingers; the amazing, gorgeous colors and the excitement of knitting them up. For me, it’s all about the yarn. I love it all. I want it all. (And thanks to you, Sheri, I may reach my goal of having it all!)

I love sock-knitting for several reasons: it’s portable, small, and easily shoved in a pocket or purse. I can pull it out at any random moment (trains are common in my area). I can make loud patterns or colors I would not normally wear. And best of all? They feel better on my feet than any other socks I’ve ever worn, and my little boy loves wearing them, too.

I love to knit socks for several reasons:
Now, I just have to knit all the colors from my stash!
I have always been a sock person (even before I knit) - I love socks, the prettier, the better! With my newly found love of knitting (actually, I have always knit, but never knew how to purl, can you believe it? Now I know, and look out world - Ha ha), they make nice portable projects for roadtrips, or for something quick to knit. Also, I only knit them via magic loop method so far, and they are pretty easy to do! The best things that I love are the colors, oh the beautiful colors and the softness of the yarn. It feels so nice flowing through my fingers!
P.S. If anyone has any helpful tips on how to knit fingering weight yarn on magic loop needles (I’m currently knitting a pair in Anne by Schaeffer - the very thin, fingering weight yarn) for magic loop #1’s - I’d take any suggestions. The pattern I’m doing is not working out well, and I’m a little intimidated by DPN’s!

Well I used to quilt and it took up lots of space and in fact required a seperate room. I needed to be in that room to quilt. Knitting is a whole different ball game. the only thing that requires space in the growing yarn stash. I can enjoy my husband company in the living room because I just keep the current project in a small basket.
Sock knitting is so wonderful because I can affrod to try top of the line yarns, fabulous colors, learn lots of different techniques and it still looks good, small and portable, quick and easy for gift giving. Is there something not to like?
I think mostly my favorite is the wonderful colors in the yarns.

Socks are great for so many reasons!
I can work with little needles and fine yarns and still finish them in a reasonable amount of time
My family will wear socks even if they hate sweaters
I can afford to spllurge on luxury yarn for them
The yarns come in so many great color
The fit easily into my briefcase or backpack
Even as a slow knitter, I can see progress everyday
I can get enough sock yarn for a year’s worth of projects without overwhelming my stash storage space.
I truly love knitting socks!

There are many things I love about socks. The things you mentioned, plus… well, I consider myself overweight. I’m not happy about my weight, otherwise I wouldn’t care. So I don’t like to buy or knit clothes for myself. I inherited small extremities, though, so I love socks, shoes, rings etc, and I’ve always had a large flamboyant shoe and sock collection.
So basically if I want to knit something for myself to wear, it’s going to be socks. Because I can’t knit peep-toe pumps. In orange.

Most every reason I can think of has already been stated by many other people.
Most of my socks are knit for others at holiday time and every year
they put their order in for what other colors they would like to have and then
I find a new pattern to knit up for them. Also sometimes I just make socks
for people who have unselfishly given of themselves for me, my mom, and others
in need. They are usually overwhelmed because they have never had a pair of
hand knit socks.

A few months ago, I took my chances and smuggled a sock-in-progress on size 1 birch needles in a clear vinyl bag onto a flight from Heathrow to JFK even though they are expressly prohibited. They made it through the first checkpoint and were questioned at the gate but were deemed harmless by the supervisor (yes, it had to go to the supervisor). The socks were crucial for my sanity on an 8 hour flight back home and I couldn’t sleep because I needed to be back on Eastern time for work the next day (passing out at 4:00 at my desk is not a good idea). Yay for socks!
Other reasons why I love knitting socks: they’re great for my attention span, they’re portable, and inject a little bit of color into my wardrobe which consists of too many black garments. And I can knit them while watching tv so I don’t feel like I’ve wasted time :).

I’m not a big sock pattern fan - but these new ones are so incredibly beautiful I had to buy them all (well almost all).
For me, I’ve always appreciated that with socks, you can do the same thing over and over again (cast on 60 sts, work rib for 4″ etc etc) and get different results each time. I’ve made probably three or four dozen pairs of socks in my life and not one of the two pairs are exactly the same. And I love that!

I don’t know what I could possibly say that hasn’t been said already, but I’ll say it anyway. I adore socks beyond all reason, largely because they’re small & portable, they’re relatively inexpensive (dh is a student, and luxury yarns are hard for us to come by–a sweater’s worth is a pipe dream right now, but socks are do-able), they’re just about infinite in design & complexity, and lordy, they’re so bloody comfy! As a stay at home mom, I rarely have the time or finances to pamper myself at all, so my handknit socks are really quite the luxury. I use some of the finest fibers in the most beautiful colours, and I feel quite decadent when I knit them AND wear them. I figure that since I don’t pay for tv (no cable or anything here), and I don’t go out on the weekends, that yarn is in my entertainment budget, and after a long hard week of homeschooling & generally running after my two boys, I bloody well deserve a nice pair of socks to work on. Heh.
And dang, they’re just so darn pretty & squooshy!! How can you *not* be addicted to them?!

I love knitting socks because I am always hot and knitting a wool sock doesn’t make me hotter like knitting a wool sweater does. It also doesn’t take the time that a sweater does. I can make crazy socks, fancy socks, plain socks…..Everybody loves socks! And the yarn! Don’t get me started…..
Heather said,

Oh, and like someone else mentioned, I also like that I can totally break out of my rather subtle colour rut with them. I tend to stick with the same tried & true colours in my regular clothing, and while they do look quite good on me, sometimes something bright & totally different is nice too. I can get that without looking too garish in my sockies. My socks don’t often match the rest of my clothing, because I frankly don’t own any clothes that match half of my socks, but I don’t care! I love my socks regardless, and wear them with pride.
And yeah, hallelujah for Cookie’s patterns!! They are GORGEOUS!

when I got past the heel on the first pair of socks I knit, my husband was AMAZED - he just assumed I was knitting a TUBE sock, and quite frankly I’m always a little amazed at the construction of a sock - no longer mystified, but always thrilled when it starts to take the shape of a foot - I love the fact that you can take sticks and “LOVELY YARN” and make something as shapely as a sock. I LOVE sock yarn - I’m not a fast knitter so my collection seems to grow but I just enjoy the process of SHAPING the sock to fit my foot - I’ve never been able to buy socks that fit properly as I have short feet and I always ended up with part of the heel sticking up out of the top of my shoe so it’s really the fabulous way you can knit a sock to FIT A FOOT of all things!!

5 the size because you can finish the sock (note 1) in a short time
6.the sense of accompishment after a reasonable amount of time
7. something to wear that fits.
8. Did I say the fun use of the wonderful yarn that Loopy Sells!!!

I am a new sock knitter. I never thought that I would love it so much. I love the yarns, the colours, the feel, and that fact that it didn’t take as long to learn or was as hard as I expected, it was pretty easy and quick (well they were ankle socks but let’s not dwell). I always get filled with wonder by the time I get to the heel, feel all tingly inside when I pick up the stitches, and get seriously anxious to start it’s twin when it’s time to graft the toe to feel all those wonderful feelings at least one more time. I like knitting socks because my high-fashion friends are always terrified I will knit them a sweater…but they almost beg me for handknit socks! I don’t get it, but it makes me happy!
Also, I can knit them to perfectly fit my size 6, extremely wide feet. There is no giant glob of heel-in-the-wrong place three inches up the back of my leg when I knit my own socks.
And I love pulling them off the sock blockers with their perfect foot shape. I love that!!!!!!

I like knitting socks because they don’t care if I’m tall or short (which I am), or, big or small. It doesn’t matter if I lose or gain weight, my socks will fit each and every time. Can I have 2 reasons? I love wearing wool on my feet. My tootsies can be a little damp (heck, they sweat) even in the dead of winter. But not in my woolies! My feet stay dry, comfortable and cushioned in my hand-knit socks.

Lets see -
1 - they are addictive
2 - portable is the main reason. They are small which translates to quick to finish. (Most of the time.)
3 - they are addictive
4 - They give you the chance to try out colors that you would normally not wear.
5 - they are addictive
6 - One nice thing about socks is that you get to try out pattern stitches that you would prefer not to do in a sweater. You can also try out new techniques.
7 - they are addictive
8 - Everyone wears socks. Since I knit most of my socks toe up, if I accidentally make them a little too snug or too big in the foot, I can always find someone whose foot it will fit. I know the shoe size of several people as a result.
9 - they are addictive
10 - The colors. I love hand dyed yarns. I like to see how the colors will play out as you knit them. Changing the pattern or needles can change everything
11 - they are an addiction that doesn’t add to your waistline.
12 - you get to wear them when you are done with them
13 - they are addictive
14 - you can knit them as gifts right in front of the person you intend to give them to without them being aware of it
15 - did I already say that they are addictive? Because they really are….

well, I am far from the first person to comment…but what the heck!
******WHY I LOVE KNITTING SOCKS******
The person before me has 15 so lets see how I can do
1. The yarn. Is there anything as beautiful as sock yarn? I think not.
2. Portability. How many knitting projects will fit in your coat pocket? There’s only ONE kind I can think of…socks!
3. Socks have a basic construction so once you figure out the heel, toe and leg length you like you can make ANY pattern with ANY yarn.
4. DPNs are so fun! Some of them are so pretty you can wear them in your hair!
5. People aren’t as picky about color with socks as other knitted items so they are the perfect gift.
6. They don’t make you hot when you knit them in the summer.
7. Wearing them with sandals or clogs makes your shoes look fantastic!
8. You can just make one!! And if your like me you wear two different orphan socks around the house anyway.
9. They are easy to pull out and knit and go practically unnoticed in doctors offices, buses, heck while stuck in traffic!
10. They keep your feet warmer that ANY store bought sock….ok, maybe not…but they sure are a heck of a lot prettier!
11. Socks can also double as cozies for phones, lotion bottles…….dog ears
12. You can buy sock yarn and it doesn’t count as stash!
13. Socks are so fast to knit, you can even make a quick gift for Dad with 12″ feet!
14. You can use a sock leg to test pattern stitches.
15. Little socks are adorable as ornaments or gift tags….I have two that I made hanging from the rear view mirror in my car.
16. It’s easy to make socks with motifs for holidays…like the red, white and blue ones I started last 4th of July. Of course they aren’t done, but whatever
17. My love of knitting socks allowed me to find and shop at the BEST site ever….The Loopy Ewe!!!
I might be able to come up with more….What’s NOT to love about knitting socks

I love socks! I love knitting where color determines the designas opposed to the “stich pattern”. There are so so many sock yarns out there, space dyed, computer printed, etc. where just knitting a basic sock pattern becomes so much fun to watch as the “pattern” unveils itself. I just bought 2 more sock yarns to add to my stash as a souvenir of my weekend in Mendocino! And they’re quick, and portable, and inexpensive ( OK not if you are me and keep buying sock yarn after sock yarn!

Why I love to knit socks:
- Portability
- They are so much fun
- I look really cool, smart and talented knitting with 5 needles
- If I hadn’t started knitting socks, I would never have found Sheri and the Loopy Ewe!

I love to try new patterns, new yarns and be able to take the work in progress with me everywhere. I always have a sock in progress in my Loopy tote and grab it as I go out the door to work, etc. When a pair of socks are finished, they are such a personal gift to a family member/friend. Finally, people are always AMAZED that you are knitting SOCKS!!

Socks, how I love to knit thee…let me count the ways…
1. Socks are portable projects
2. There’s no long-term commitments - I can change my mind with every pair of socks.
3. I use colors I would never use for other garments because it’s ok for my feet to look whimsical!
4. EVERYONE needs socks.
5. It’s interesting looking to knit a sock - lots of people ask about my knitting and I LOVE to tell them about it (Converting more muggles to knitters you see).
6. SOCK YARN - Need I say more???
7. I can try new techniques on a sock before I try them on a larger garment.
8.There are SO many different kinds of socks to knit and SO many different ways to knit them!
9. Everyone needs MORE socks! :))
That is all.

I am a new sock knitter and I love socks because of all the beautiful colours and different types of yarns available. They are fun to make and I love to see the end result. I am so happy I found Sheri and the Loopy Ewe for all my supplies.
I am waiting for my first package. Can’t wait to get it.

I love knitting socks because I can buy a small of all the beautiful handpaints around and have something to show for it. Knitting lace was always one of my favorites, but sometimes the yarn was very expensive to make a decent size shawl or scarf. I can indulge my love of lace and have it in beautifully colored yarn without all the work and expenseand it goes a lot faster.

What do I like about knitting socks? What don’t I like should be the question!
I love that they are the perfect traveling project (I always have a sock in my bag). I love that I can use colors that I wouldn’t usually choose. I love that for about $20 I can afford an entire project from start to finish. I love how warm and cuddly they are on the coldest of days. I love that they fit perfectly. I love that I can knit them without a pattern. I love that even “muggles” are impressed when you’re knitting socks (look at all those needles, how do you make it turn around like that, how long does that take you).
A general HOORAY FOR SOCKS!

Oh there are so many reasons why I love to knit socks. You can knit them up pretty quick. There are so many wonderful patterns and sock yarns out there that you can always keep things interesting. They are easy to carry around to work, or the doctor or a roadtrip. Compared to other things you could knit (a sweater, or a shawl or something) they are pretty inexpensive. I mean, yes, my non-knitting friends ask me why I would want to spend $20 on a pair of socks that I have to make myself, but they just don’t get it. Socks rock!

Unlike store-bought socks, they actually fit my feet! I have kind of skinny feet, and most store-bought socks bunch up and twist all over the place. But even more important, I like to knit socks because it takes socks beyond being a utility, or a necessity, to an accessory. They’re beautiful, every single one is a unique work of art. I’m not big on accessorizing with belts and jewelry and such, and I don’t change my purse to match my shoes. Heck, most days I don’t wear makeup. But I can express myself in a small way, a way that most people don’t even notice. But that’s okay. *I* notice, and I feel great in hand-knitted socks.
Sheri, you’re killing me with the Cookie A. patterns! I LOVE everything that woman designs! I’m going to have to add every one of those sock patterns to my collection!

I love knitting socks because they are portable, and they don’t require a ton of yarn, unlike a sweater or a big shawl or something. That allows me to have a project with me to keep my fingers busy and get something accomplished when I have to spend so much time doing “hurry up & wait” tasks, with appointments, practices, performances, etc, for my sons, etc.
I do want to take this opportunity to bring up something. Yesterday, we had occasion to spend some time waiting in the out patient clinic of the University of Michigan hospital. I know that some people on some blogs complain about KIP (knitting in public). I was sitting in the hallway, knitting (on a cable scarf, not a sock, sorry), waiting. Some very ill people passed by me, many in wheel chairs, etc. One older lady, who did not look like she was in very good condition, was on oxygen. As she was wheeled by me on the way to her destination, her whole face lit up. She gave me the biggest smile, as she watched me knit. In a way, it reminded me of therapy dogs who are taken into hospitals to help ill patients. In this case, my knitting seemed to be therapy for this poor lady. If I could bring such a smile to even one person by my knitting, then I feel very well indeed! It hadn’t occurred to me before that just watching my knitting might help others. It’s just a thought.

I love knitting socks now that I knit both at the same time on 2 circular needles. I finally get to have a pair of socks and not a bunch of odd socks sitting around.
Having said that, socks knit up fast and I am more willing to take a chance on doing something different since there is a small investment of time and money. Having found the Loopy Ewe I have a slew of yarns I want to knit with. My stash is growing!

You had to ask this question? I could write you pages of reasons why. The simple answer is, what don’t I like about sock knitting? Of course, that is just too general. So, I will give you the long answer.
Every knitter is different. Each sock is individual, a part of you, like other knitting projects. But they are on a small scale, presenting a chance to try out new techniques or styles without getting halfway through a fair-isle sweater and realizing that you hadn’t been paying attention to which yarn was in the dominant hand! Socks are small, making them a perfect portable project, something to do while standing in line or waiting at the doctor’s office. They are interesting, just as you think you’re going to lose your mind over all that stockinette, you get turn the heel! Or kitchener the toes. It is a versatile project, think of all the variations: toe-up, cuff down, sideways, short-row heel, eye of partridge, patterns, plain stockinette, ankle socks, peek-a-boo socks! I mean, that’s not even the half of it.
Sock knitting is an addiction though. I mean, come on, we don’t even count sock yarn as “falling off the wagon” on stash diets! The colors and styles of sock yarn are amazing! Oh, can we mention how the sock yarns are starting to include fibers like bamboo? Nice. When you see the same pattern knitted with different yarn, it changes your perception of it entirely. There are many KALs and groups geared soley to sock knitting/knitters. It’s wonderful.
People are STUNNED when they see you knitting on those “itsy-bitsy needles”, and I love the shock effect. I like to answer the questions about them. My father was amazed that I could make a sock that was foot shaped, and not just a straight tube. lol They really stir up interest and I love hearing what people say about them. I have expanded my wardrobe to match socks I have knitted!
Mostly though, my reason is that it is fun. I enjoy knitting anyway, but something about knitting socks appeals to me on a deep level. They can be anything I want, and if I want to wear crazy bright green and orange socks, that’s fine. I don’t need to show them off, I can cover them up. To me it feels like the act of knitting a sock (something we put on our feet, and out of our minds) is very parallel to the knitting movement/fad currently. People think of socks and picture a pack of 10-12 white socks. Not many people consider socks an exciting thing. They are sometimes (plain white socks I mean), but they can be more. We are more now, we are not a bunch of old ladies knitting scarves and baby blankets with scratchy wool. This is a revolution of funky bright green and orange sock knitting ladies! And I think we should wear our socks and have fun! Proving that knitting can no longer be typecast.

I love the instant gratification I get from knitting socks. Well, depending on how busy I am, it’s kind of instant. I love how I can try all sorts of colors and patterns and I can’t imagine every being bored. Now that I have the basic construction of a sock understood, I can try all sorts of yarn and patterns and have something wearable at the end.

1. The magic of turning the toe and heel on socks
2. Making something utilitarian and attractive
3. Turning straight yarn into something.
4. The relative speed of sock-sized projects
5. Portability
6. The look people get on their face when they learn you are making a SOCK. “Really?! You KNIT socks?’ (I sometimes wonder where people think store bought socks come from anyway. The sock stork?)
7. The endless, gorgeous sock yarns
8. Doing trial runs with yarns and colors for other non-socky projects
Kudos to ‘Cookie A’ for her patterns. Those have to be the most regal knee socks I’ve ever seen.

Oh socks! How do I love thee? Instant knitting gratification, a “no-brainer” escape from intricate sweaters or lace, the chance to have just a little of a luxury fibre, having a wearable “swatch”, I can take them / knit them anywhere, they are a conversation starter, or, sometimes, a “Don’t bug me - I have sticks and know how to use them”, there’s always enough yarn for socks, and sock love means never having to say “I will only knit from my stash”.

Like most I knit socks because of portability and *relative* low cost. And socks fill the need for intricacy without a long commitment to count, count, count, chart, chart, chart, cuss cuss, rip. They generally fit without major alteration, and make lovely gifts. People who would blow off the labour of a sweater, will treat a pair of hand made socks reverently. And, if you wear drone clothing to work, you can still wear irreverent socks without repercussions. ; )

I love that I have knit so many of them that my hands know what they are doing every step of the way. I love that there are so many different ways to construct a sock, each of them beautiful. I love the fact that even if people guess that you knit your hat or your sweater, it blows their mind to find out you knit your socks, in fact your whole family’s socks. I love the tie to a time when people HAD to knit their own socks (without reinforcement!) and knowing some of what that entailed. I love the way color choices can be blown wide open because this isn’t a sweater that you want to keep and wear forever. And I love how good they feel–handknit socks are my indulgence.

(95% of the yarn I buy is sock yarn) I love being able to pick the patterns and colors, and I find the process of knitting socks very entertaining. I have only knit a few pairs of socks but I am addicted! (I had better be for as much sock yarn as I own..)

i like knitting socks…because i love socks! i have always loved unique and wonderful socks, even before i knew how to knit. and so what could be better than combining the two passions?? my feet are always cold, and knitting my own socks brings me a great deal of warmth and comfort (literally!). after a long day at work, there’s nothing like slipping on my favorite pair of socks - or creating a new favorite pair - to relax a bit. for those same reasons, making socks as gifts is also extremely rewarding…cold feet run in my family. hooray socks!

As a pretty recent convert from 20+ years of crochet to sock knitting, I am addicted. The gorgeous coloured yarns that tempt me into just one more round to watch the next colour appear … the infinite possibilities of textures and patterns, so now two pairs are alike - sometimes even each sock wants to be unique. Plus, it’s easier to splurge on a ’special’ yarn for socks than for a whole sweater!
For me, socks are a personal goal overcome - something I wanted to learn, and had to teach myself to do. I do admit it will be a while before I can get my sizing correct though!
In an automatic, generic, computerised, electronic world, socks are … personal and individual. What’s not to like?!

I love to knit socks for many of the reasons already listed. I love the portability, the many stitch possibilities, and the crazy zany socknitter community. Knitting socks is the ultimate knitting project. Knitters have been knitting socks for centuries so when you knit a pair, you’re sort of joining in on this huge, ancient, historic sort of thing. Of course, it’s also fun to see non-knitters look at all those needles and go….”What the heck are you doing!?”

Weird, my Bloglines didn’t update. Anyway…
I love that I am so thrilled with creating such a small, lowly object that doesn’t even show when worn with the proper length pants that I can stick around to make a second one. I am so enthralled because of portability, easy customization to my foot length/size/shape, the bang for your buck, and finally all the options there are for yarn, from colors to composition of fibers.
Love the Cookie A. patterns–I’ll buy some when I’m not so enchanted by my Nancy Bush patterns. =)

I love knitting socks because it allows me to play with yarn in great fun bright colours that I would NEVER be able to use for something like a sweater (me in a rainbow-coloured sweater would be truly horrible to behold!). I love watching all the colours slip through my fingers as I knit. They are also my default mindless knitting project (stockinette in the round, around and around and around) and make for great TV knitting. And best of all, even the most luxurious of sock yarns are within reach of my rather meagre budget. =)
Your Louet Gems sock is gorgeous!

Wow, all these responses. This is wonderful. I love the process of picking yarn to match the pattern or vice versa. I love imaging the finished product in this or that yarn and the joy the color and the texture of the yarn brings to the finished product. That is almost more fun to be than the actual knitting. I could be a collector if I am not careful. C:

Hmmm…why do I knit socks? For all of the reasons already mentioned above!
1) They’re small and portable, so I can always have my knitting with me.
2) There are sooooooo many different constructions, patterns, designs, lengths, that I never get bored. (I have the attention span of an gnat.) And even if I did get bored, they’re quick projects so they are done soon enough for me to move on to the next pattern/design/yarn/colorway.
3) There are soooooooo many wonderful sock yarns (that can be purchased through the Loopy Ewe) that even if I’m not ready to knit, I can go to my stash boxes and spend a wistful afternoon just playing with the yarns and imagining the projects as each one of them speaks up and says “pick me this time…pick ME!”
4) Being a sock knitter is like being a member of a special little club…we all know and understand why we all do this. Discovering that someone you’ve known for a long time is also a sock knitter…wow, it takes your relationship to a whole new level! Nobody else really understands!
5) Even non-sock-knitters smile and sigh when they ask you what you’re knitting and you say proudly “SOCKS, I always knit socks”. Why? Because even non-sock-knitters understand what a great thing it is to be able to create something so individual and warm and fuzzy and personal as socks. They just wish they could do it too!
6) I can make all my friends and family happy by knitting socks for them. Except for the dogs. They don’t want to wear socks. But they do enjoy an occasional game of “grab-the-sock-in-progress-and-carry-it-to-the-kitchen-and-unwind-the-ball-and-wrap-it-around-the-kitchen-table-legs”! Sorry, I’m a knitter, but not a cat person!
I love knitting socks!

I love all of the sock yarn and the beautiful colors…hence the huge stash of just sock yarn in my living room! I love being able to complete a project in a week and having something to wear that no one else has…even if they use the same yarn and pattern, they look different. I absolutely love handpainted yarn because of the way the colors react with each other (I started off with Opal yarns and lots of faux fairisle patterns…and now I love varigated stuff from artists).
That’s all I can think of for now….

I can easily knit a sock in my lunch breaks in the office, and they’re finished fast enough my co-workers don’t get bored with the colours!
When I’m stressed, I knit. I can keep a sock around for times I really need to unwind and just do a few rounds to calm down, or pass the time waiting in line for a movie or the doctor.
Everyone I’ve knitted socks for has loved them. Comparing them to store bought socks is like comparing a perfectly tailored dress made from the finest materials to a plastic bag with a couple of holes in.
I have small feet, and store bought socks just don’t fit as well, or last as well, as ones I knit myself.
Sock knitting is cheaper than therapy, and it keeps me off the streets!

I knit socks because my husband lives in a different state than I do (I’m in MA, he’s in MD). I travel a LOT - down and back every week, and I hate flying (I think it’s a real phobia). Knitting socks help with both of those things - they’re portable, so I can always have one with me. They’re quick, so I can make measurable progress on a short flight. They help me focus on something when I’d normally be horribly anxious at the
