I’m sorry. And a Contest.
I’m going to just start the week off with an apology. I know I’m going to put you over the edge this week with the Sneak Up and …. well, I’m sorry. There are way too many beautiful colors and yarns and choices and I have no idea how you’re going to decide which ones need to come home to live with you. How do I know this? Because I took too many of them out this week to put in my own stash. That’s how I know. I didn’t plan it this way. We always have so many things on order that I am never sure exactly what will show up week to week. This week – too many good choices. (What’s going up? Well, Yarn Pirate, Perchance to Knit, Seacoast Panda, and all of the lace yarns. Overload.) So I hope you enjoy browsing and shopping and know that I feel your pain. (Zoe advises everyone to just take a nap, while awaiting this week’s Sneak Up. Honest – you can see her mid-sentence in the photo.)
I wanted to answer a couple of blog questions – one was, “What is a Sneak Up?” That simply refers to us putting new yarns and products on the website each week. Once in awhile I will re-stock yarns and coloways as the UPS gal brings them, but most of the time I do all of the updating at once, each week. The time and day change from week to week, just because I have learned that it helps make for a more pleasurable shopping experience if not everyone has planned to be on here shopping at the same exact time.
Although it’s kind of funny to watch how quickly the word gets out when the Sneak Up has taken place. I think some of you take turns monitoring the site for your whole knitting group, based on what I have heard and seen! (Personally? I’d place my own order and then go spread the word!) Another question is about The Loopy Ewe Seasonal Sock Club and whether or not we still have spots available. The answer is unfortunately, no. Our sock club sold out overnight and ended up being 3 times bigger than I expected, so we’re definitely full this year! However, we would sure love to have you sign up next year and I will give plenty of notice for that. I already have some fun things in mind for the next one. The last question: Why did the numbers go away under your different website categories? Well, because that is one of the things that slows the website down when so many of you are shopping at once. However, with our move to a bigger server and a little re-vamping by Web Guy, we were able to put them back up and we don’t think they will affect the speed to much from now on.
Speaking of fun things – let’s do the April Blog Contest. Tell me your favorite color combination for socks. Not the brand, not the weight, not the price – just tell me what 2-5 colors would make up your very favorite colorway. (And if you want to add “best name for a sock colorway ever”, I think that would be fun, too.) My favorite sock color combination would be hunter, cranberry and mocha. Although I’m fairly certain that after I read your entries, I will have changed my mind a few times. Best sock name ever? The one that is on the Loopy Ewe Summer Sock Club yarn – it’s too fun! Leave your answers in the comments and I’ll use the random number generator to pick a winner next Monday, the 30th for the winner of a fun Loopy Loot package. (And maybe we’ll turn some of your favorite color combinations into new colorways here!) I think maybe I ought to go through more of WH’s flower photos for some good color combo ideas.

Ah-ha! A new server! Now you’re big time!
I just love blue and white. As a quilter I gravitated toward it and maybe an ultimate sock yarn would be “Blue Willow ” (for the old pottery pattern) with a couple of deep blues and a bright white. Not the most original, but…yup, that’s one I like!

My favorite colorway would be pink, black and spring green, which colors you may know very well as they are the colors of an exclusive colorway to the loopy ewe. I just finished the first sock and the colors are so amazing I can’t get over it! I have been wearing the one sock around the office at work (under my desk) and admiring the colors when I am supposed to be working!

I keep calling to give you my Amex security code but it’s not going to the answering machine. I have no idea what’s wrong!
I’m going to email it to you tonight after a nap..
But as far as the ultimate colorway it would have to be cream with touches of pink and green. I’d call it “Budding”.

Lately I’ve been hunting for more neutral colors. Boring? Maybe, but I’d wear it more than anything. Just a subtle variation of creams and tans, just a tiny touch of brown. It would go with so much of what I wear, and my favorite shoes, I could make my everyday socks.

Creating my own colorway would be a deep red, navy and cream becoming khaki. I would call it “Patriot”. After that I think I would combine a buttery yellow, chocolate and black and call it “Labs”.
Fun!

BRIGHT pink (fuschia) and BRIGHT green and darker pink and a mellow purple all swirling together, maybe some black for depth and texture, maybe some deep brown.
Since those are the colors that make my head kinda buzz when I see them I would call it BrainSong. (And to think, before I had children I wore black exclusively. What has happened? Did I lose it or gain it? or both?)

Chocolate brown, deep dark red, that smoky dusty rose pink that old timers call “ashes of roses”, and maybe just a tiny hint of chartreuse green. (Just happens to be the colors I’m using for my wedding, but dangit it’s a great combination, and I’ve never seen those colors together in a skein of yarn yet – and I’ve been looking!)
How ’bout some really cutesy pinks called “Loopy Schmoopy”? Or a man-friendly green and brown called “Oh, Ewe Brute!”? Miami Dolphins teal and orange: “Dan Merino”?
“Sheepless in Seattle”? “It Had to Be Ewe”? “Sheeping Beauty”?
Okay, sorry, sorry – I’m done.

I don’t have to worry to much about this sneak up. If it happens before the 1st my wallet and sanity will be safe. No shopping for yarn before payday.
Of course it will be a bit of a bummer too but I already have some yummy Yarn Pirate and several skeins from PTK. Enough to keep me busy. Now the lace is a different story.
I think I would go with reds, pinks, and yellows, it could be called “Roses in Bloom” after my 3 favorite roses that I had to leave behind when we moved.
elizabeth said,

I’ve been knitting mostly with variegated yarns but lately I’ve been thinking of different shades of greens & pinks together – I’d call it “Kermit & Miss Piggy.” (Kind of like Christa above)
I’ve also been thinking of making wide-ish striped socks with just shades of green – true Kermit socks.
I’m excited to see all the lace yarns – hope I don’t miss the sneak up! Even though I am absolutely on Restriction – capital R.

Lately, my whole world has been aqua and red. And I realize that means I’m about a year behind te other crafty mavens. But between that and the coral color that’s STEALING MY SOUL….I’m soooo predictable lately.
I do wish I could find the exact combination of blue and green to make something the same shade as the water at Cape Perpetua, Oregon, though. Maybe with a little of the palest blue thrown in like sea spray and whitecaps, and some of the deep brownish-black of the rocks up thataway.
Can you tell I’m homesick?

I love the calico and the white combo
My daughter named her that because she’s a polydactyl and looks like she’s wearing snowshoes. She has little mittens in the front with her SIX toes on each foot….and six nails to go with (murder on my yarn). She also has one back foot with 6 nails and one with 5.

My favorit colorway would be Pink, light and dark with teal in light and dark with a few other bright colors mixed in. Happiness might be a good name. Or maybe I need to look at some Opi nail polish and steal one of their very creative names.
If you hadn’t noticed by my past orders, if it has pink in it and it has bright happy colors, then i’ve bought it.
Are you getting any more of the Zen String Bloom colorway? I rally need two more skeins so I can do a pair of pedicure socks and a scarf. I’m working on regular socks now and just love the colors.
Thanks for all the great yarn and I guess I need to check your sight a couple of times a day so I won;t miss out on the next sneak up.

I think a great name for a colorway would be Happy Feet. That could be any color, really. I also just saw the company name for a brand of socks at the store, something like Fun For Feet. I smiled because no store-bought socks will ever compare to the fun of hand knit ones.
You’re doing a shawl now? Cool! Is it your first? I know you’d mentioned not being a really experienced lace knitter. Just wait till you bind off and block it, now that is fun.
No more lace yarn for me. I won’t visit you for a while because if I see any more Sea Silk in person, I’ll bankrupt myself. I have my lone skein in a Zip-loc, and I open it every once in a while to pet and sniff. =)

Hmm…
I really love colors that are sort of tone on tone, variations on a theme. I would love to see a yarn that was purples ranging from that whitish purple color to the dark almost black one, a pretty brown and some turquoise could also be added to the mix, but I love purple. I dunno what I would call it though, I’m bad at naming things.

A glance at my stash would show that it must be inky blue, teal and deep green with a splash of rich burgundy. It makes me think of velvet and jewels, and autumn clothes, so let’s call it “Autumn Renaissance”.

Tetley Tea (off-white, black, and reddish brown) for my darling doggy…

Mmm, there are a lot of color combinations already mentioned that I like (pinks and greens, pinks with creams and tans) but the one I’m looking for would have the colors of the tree that’s blooming right now in my garden: deep bark brown, bronze, pale leaf green, and blossom pink. I’d call it April 25 because that’s also a holiday here.

I love chocolate brown/tan, and turquoise (Sand and Sea), and although I like some red/black/ and gray colors together (Beetle Bug), I don’t often knit those colors, and last but not least – Light(but not lime) green/pink/brown/tan – Spring Cricket!
Oh, and I LOVE Blues – I think I would call this color, Faded Jeans (one size fits all), because wouldn’t you just love to find a pair of jeans that fits everyone, looks great, but feels even better, AND not have to shop forever to find them????

Medium rose and light rose with a hefty dose of deep spring green. Not quite apple green, but the color of new maple leaves. I always gravitate towards the green and pink combo like that. I think there’s a Colinette afghan set in those colors that acts like a magnet for me…I find it no matter how hidden it may be.

Stick with the lace, and keep those life lines in use! I use dental tape for mine, and I have also found that needles like the newer Denise sets have a hole in them – you thread the life line through the hole, knit your row, and viola! life line installed.

My favorite combinations depend upon the season (so fickle, I know) and as the warm weather is here I’m drawn to sea colors, beach and sea glass colors. I would pick pale sky blue, deep sea green, and speckles of sea glass colors in white, aquamarine and rootbeer bottle brown. The colorway would be called “Discovery”, as the best place I’ve been for combing for sea glass is the beach on Puget Sound at Discovery Park in Seattle.

Katie’s All Time, Best Ever, Most Favorite Colorway This Week:

I have to say that lately I’ve been drawn to all shades of green. I’m looking out my window at all the variations coming out in the garden; the always-dark green background of the evergreens, the soft spring greens of the apple tree (with pink blossoms), the grey-green of the butterfly bush, the bright, slightly lime green of the new hawthorne leaves. The rosemary bush with it’s sprinkling of lavender flowers looks pretty good, too.

My favourite colours for early spring (which it still is up here in Canada) are always spring green and bright yellow, like daffodils or fosythia, which are blooming outside my window today. I especially love the colours of forsythia because they remind me of a time when my second daughter was about three and we lived next door to a young woman named Cynthia, who, unfortunately was suffering from breast cancer. She loved to spend time with my little girls and they with her, but her illness was troubling them. When the forsythia bloomed in April, my daughter asked what the yellow flowery bush was called and mistaking my response for “For Cynthia” she promptly took some of the branches I had cut off to our neighbour Cynthia to cheer her up. So the bright yellow forsythia flowers always remind me of this special woman. I guess I would have to name the yarn “Forcynthia’.

Favorite sock colorway name: For the socks above probably something like Jewel Box since it’s pretty much jewel colors (at least the cool end of the spectrum ones). But in terms of existing colorway names – gosh there’s so many fun ones. I have, at least once, bought yarn solely because of the color name. I don’t know that I can pick a favorite. Wow, color combinations. I love seeing all the ideas other people have. But for me I think it would be a dark mauve, plum and forest combination. It makes me think Black Forest.

Blissful is the name. Petal pink, lime green, lilac, melon, butter yellow and cornflower blue.

Wow – the sneak up is killing me! I can’t sleep, I can’t eat – or, hmmm… maybe it’s the heat.
Me, I love autumnal colors – reds, yellows, oranges mixed with greens. Defintely not a good namer here – but I think I’d go with “Thoreau” on something like this – I always imagine him off in his cabin, in fall, in beautiful natural-ness..

Believe it or not, I think my favorite color combination for the moment is Orange, Turquoise, and Red. I would call it “Salsa.”

Hah! I was here RIGHT when you uploaded the new stuff! *does happy dance of yarn*
I think my favourite colour combination ever would have to be soft, muted greens, greys, and blues — the sort you get on a lovely cool drizzly day. Failing that, bright floral green with orange and red splashes like some flowers I saw last summer.

If I could find this I think I’d swoon, but I’d love to see a sock yarn color combination in:
shades of cranberry/wine and light lime green (the color combination of green cymbidium orchids) with maybe just a touch of white.

My favorite colors are the shades of blues, pinks, browns and greens found in the Water Lilies painting by Claude Monet. I would name my colourway Monet’s Water Lilies. Perfect for a sunny spring day!

Right now I’m loving the truly obnoxious color combo of lime green, red, and hot pink. My name for it? Gonorrhea.

My favorite color sock yarn for summer: hot pink, turquoise and tangerine. I have a pair close to that colorway and always get comments when I wear them.

I love pinks (of the pure variety, not muddied out & not too close to lavendar or purple or orangeish). I also love sky blues to med blues, or turquoise/teals/aquas (but not too greenish) colorways. If I were going to put some colors together to form a colorway, I would like to see a pinks/sky blues with maybe a hint of silver (for clouds) colorway, something like you would see towards sunset. My grandpa would have called that, “sky blue-pink”; it was his favorite color, and the appreciation for that color follows him. (I should note that part of my color preferences has to do with the fact that my three sons are “color-deficient”, so they do not even see muddied tones of reds/pinks or greens, etc. I’m not color deficient, though.
)
I’m more interested in the actual colors than in a name for them. Sheri, I really appreciate how well the colors on your website & my computer match the fiber when I get it! Thank you.

My fav’s include light pinks, greens and rose and of course I’ll buy anything that resembles neapolatin (sp?) ice cream!

I admit I love pink/white/black. A name? Spring! What about pinks and greens? Azaleas…. brown/blue/white, you’d have summer at the seashore.

I think my favorite combination would be a pinkish orange with a bit of gold, yellow, and a tiny bit of cranberry abd browny-grey. I would call it Flaming Maple for the color of of maples when the leaves seem to glow as they are changing.

My favorite yarns are subtle green variegated ones, but I’d also love a turquoise/brown/white yarn, or maybe dark and light green with some bright pink thrown in.

Hmm, this is so hard. I like browns combined with bright blue. I have no idea what I could call it. Something earthy sounding. Oh, how about “Something Earthy.”
I am so the type of person who will by yarn if the name of the colorway is awesome. Just last week I bought some CTH Cabin Fever from The Loopy Ewe, which I am saving for my week in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains!

My favorite colors for sock yarn would probably be really dark green, not-quite-as-dark green, and dark purple. And a fushia-y pink. There are so many really good sock yarn names, I don’t think I can choose a best one!

I’ve had the same difficulty as you, every time I read a comment, my favorite colors changed… I think, this week, I’m liking a bright sunny orange, burgundy red, a bit of bright red, and, just to mix things up, teensy bits of turquoise and a darker blue here and there… What to call it (’cause you know the best colorway would have to deserve the best name)… hmm… how about “Away on Holiday”?

There are so many lovely colour combinations! I love shades of grey with a deep maroon. I think I would be amused if it were called “Tainted Love” .Grey with a bright yellow or minty green is a great combination too.

My favorite color combination, I buy it every time I see it, is red, white, and black. As for fun names, how about a Princess of Mars colorway with red, pinky-purply red, a dash of black, and a light pink.

Oh, I love so many colors that it’s hard to pick one combo—but I’ll have to go with some 50′s colors (which are my fav’s this week, lol) and go with pale aqua, pink, and white–and call it “Sock Hop”.

I’d love to see a colorway with shades of brown from cafe au lait and everything in between until milk chocolate and shades of mauve/burgundy/plum. I’d name it Raspberry Mud Pie.

I saw the perfect colors just today. Robin’s Egg blue with brown shades and a smidge of white. I’d call it “Bird’s Nest”. I can just see it in socks…you’d have to do an Eye of Partridge Heel of course!

This is hard! It all depends upon what mood I am in. I always tend to be drawn towards summery greens, pinks and browns. I think I would go with summer green, a medium pink, chocolate brown, medium turquoise, and cream. I would call it “Zinnia” after my favorite summer flowers.

Reddish purples fading to red then into blueish purples fading to blues. Purple People Eater!
And Impatiens would be reds, pinks, purples and a bit of white. It would probably have to be sport weight as well (impatience).

Oh, EVERY colorway is my favorite at one time or another! If I had to pick one right now, I’d say I want something spring-y in yellows, light greens, and oranges. But this will probably change next week – I’m a sucker for all kinds of color.

I’m liking the Aqua/turquoise and dark brown thing myself, Maybe calling it “Surf and Turf”? Or a Denim blue and khaki with a teensy bit of white and call it “Casual Friday”.
This is a fun game! It’s giving me great color inspiration… hope it does for others too!

Maybe call it woodstock or 1969.

one color combination that i love but rarely see is “gray, lavender, teal, & maybe cream”. i would name the color something like “zen garden” because i find the colors very tranquil and calming.
