Knitting Time!

Knitting Daughter and I have snuck away for a couple of days of knitting and movies and hanging out. Yay! We used to do this on long weekends pre-Loopy, and I promised her we’d make a point to still do it. So while the Loopy Elves are hard at work getting your orders out, we’re slacking. And having a great time! Actually, I pre-wrote this because we’re not taking the computer with us, so I hope we’re having a good time. :-) I suppose that I also need to admit that I will be out of town next weekend, too. (I know, I know. Two weekends in a row. Slacker, slacker, slacker.) Next weekend is my Girlfriend Weekend in Colorado. You might remember that I went in March for my annual trip. We’re hoping the husbands are overlooking the fact that we did this twice this year. We used the excuse that we wanted to move the timing for the trip to Fall. Of course it made much more sense to schedule two this year than to wait 18 months in between them. You know how that goes. So next week I’ll blog Monday and Wednesday and then will be gone until Sunday. I’m leaving Loopy in very capable hands, so your orders will still go out – I just won’t be emailing or blogging!

I had a hard time deciding what to take and knit this weekend. We have so many fun new lines coming in and there is so much knitting to be done. (It’s a difficult problem to have.) Our next Sneak Up will be the second week in October (after I return from my second Slacker Girlfriends Weekend), and we will have Yarn Love, 15 colors of the new Heather Sock Yarn from Schaefer (it came in today – so pretty. 55% Merino, 30% Silk and 15% Nylon), more Schaefer Anne and Lola, more Trekking, and …. the things that are on their way as I type. An update on Wollmeise – I had a very fun phone call with Claudia from Germany this week (Hi Claudia!) and our next order will ship in 3 weeks and will include Lace AND Sock yarn. Apparently it’s the rainy season in Germany, and the yarn doesn’t dry as fast as she can dye. At any rate, we’ll keep getting that in and I know you will love the lace as much as you have loved the sock yarn. I have one skein of it and keep trying to find “the perfect” pattern for it. Or maybe I’m scared to use something that nice until I have more lace experience.

Today’s recipe is a quick and easy dessert for your family or friends.

bcakePoppy Seed Bundt Cake
(Am I the only one who thinks of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” every time I hear the word “bundt cake”?)

1 pkg. yellow cake mix
1 pkg. instant vanilla pudding (3 oz)
5 large eggs
1/2 cup oil
1 cup water
1/4 cup poppy seeds

Mix well. Bake in greased and floured bundt pan at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove from oven slightly before done – it will finish baking in the pan. Cool a little and invert on plate to finish cooling before adding glaze.

1/2 tsp. butter extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/4 cup orange juice
3/4 cup sugar

Heat until sugar dissolves. Cool until thickened and drizzle over cake.

  1. Sounds like you’re going to have a marvelous time of “girl bonding”, I’ve got CG#2 in town…he’ll be bonding with the odd jobs I need done…he needs the spending money!!!

  2. I think its just wonderful that you’re finding time to get away with your daughter. And, your friends next week. You work very hard and deserve it!! Enjoy!! : )

  3. Have a wonderful time….I am hoping DS1 GF will want to knit once she has finished her Master’s…bu for now DH has offered to learn if I will teach him on a circular.

  4. Sheri I’m just back from a week on a rustic nearby island in Penobscot Bay with five writers and artists. I painted, knit and ate all week – it was gorgeous weather and just a heavenly time. I was sad I might have missed a sneak up but you didn’t have one so I wasn’t able to feel virtuous! When I got back I checked in and scored several of Wendy’s patterns – life is good. Now I’m waiting for the new inspiration to arrive.

Enjoy your weekend! We hard-working women need to do this often!

  5. Oh how fun, I wish I was going on a girls weekend. I may have to call my mom up and see if she wants to do some knitting together.

  6. My parents had a bundt cake at dinner this weekend and I totally thought of that scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding – and then contemplated sticking some flowers in the middle to fix it. :)

  7. Have a very nice weekend. I hope it’s as cool as it is here – which makes for great knitting weather!

Why decide what you have to take to knit – just pack a bag full of yarn and needles and have a blast!!!!

I heard that there is a big textile/yarn convention this week in Gremany – and that Wollmeise would be there….wow….wouldn’t that be a blast…

  8. Have good vacations! Mr. Fixit and I just saw that movie and laughed about the bundt cake part. He made one the other day and I was impressed. We never had anything that snazzy in my house, growing up. He didn’t think it was that hard… I wonder what he will come up with next? Anyway, please don’t knit all the yarn while you are gone – leave us some for the sneakup :)

  9. I don’t expect a lot of knitting time this weekend (though my Clapotis is close enough to done that I think it’ll be finished soon), but in two weeks a friend and I are taking advantage of an area yarn shop hop that will involve about 200 miles round-trip — and she’s driving ;).

(I just made that Chocolate Truffle Cake recipe you posted a few weeks back as a birthday cake for some coworkers. It is extremely delicious, and was especially nice for the coworker who can’t eat much wheat. And I ate way too much of it; good thing I’m having a plain veggie soup for lunch.)

  10. Hope you have a wonderful weekend of knitting and movies with your KD! What fun, and you definitely deserve it! I am very jealous of your “girlfriend trip” to Colorado as well! Enjoy the cool weather for me too…Can’t wait to hear all about it!

  11. We’re looking at possible rain/snow in the mountains this weekend. Bring your coat and boots as well as Indian summer clothing! Looking forward to hearing about your trip.

  12. You are just having too much fun! Good for you! :D

I’m glad to hear Wollmeise wont be here for a while, I don’t have to worry about missing the next sneak up (right before Stitches East!).

  13. Hey Sheri, I hope you and KD have a wonderful weekend. What fun. I will be going for a friend long weekend at the end of Oct. Its a knitting weekend in Vermont. We have been going to this for a few years. It’s awsome fun. I am sure you feel that way about your Colorado trip. Have fun and relax, you deserve it. Hugs

  14. Have a wonderful time with your lovely daughter, I think it is wonderful that you both enjoy each other’s company and spending quality time doing things you both enjoy.

My yarn just arrived, it’s the one colour of Yarntini I didn’t have in my stash, they are almost like works of art (and are only knitted into socks for very special people), the sale CTH is wonderful – great colours and terrific value.

I just made the cake, it’s my husband’s birthday today, and I thought he needed a cake. I did switch it up a little as we are both watching our diets, I used 1 1/4 cups of egg beaters (replace the 5 eggs), a lower sugar Pillsbury cake mix, low fat pudding mix, and applesauce to replace the oil, I guess the only part that stayed the same was the poppy seeds. It’s just about ready to come out of the oven and then I will glaze it, replacing the sugar with splenda. I will let you know how it tastes.

thanks Sheri as always you are the best

  15. You’re not the only one who thinks of MBFGW when you hear the word bundt. I was just thinking of it the other day when I read another bundt cake recipe. That movie is just hysterical.

  16. “You feex’d it! You feex’d the boonk cake!” I think I’ll go put it in the dvd player and knit now.

Wollemeise…will I make it this time? :::marks calender for 3 weeks+shipping time:::

I had a three hour talk with my daughter today. I miss her so much. I totally envy you your time together. Enjoy each other lots and make sure you take as much time as you need. They fly away so soon…

    ~Hugs~

  17. I don’t expect much knitting time this weekend, but the good news is that I’m replacing (finally!) my 39 year old mattress! That should help, anyway. :)

I hope you have a great good time on your trip! I need more friends who knit so that we can travel and knit together. This is a very good thing. Right now, I travel with my friends and we always have a good time, but I’m the sole knitter in the group. They’re very good about indulging me, though, and will take me to whatever LYS is where we have traveled so that I can pad my stash. :) Sometimes they even contribute to the cause.

Wollemeise LACE WEIGHT??? Oh, dear…. I can’t tell you how much I’m lookig forward to THAT one!

  18. MMmmmm! The cake looks awesome!
You had to go and mention My Big Fat Greek Wedding, didn’tcha? Now all I can think about is Windex!!! LOL.
I’m glad the Wollmeise will be a little while longer….I can’t knit even 1/10th as fast as I can buy. ROFL. I look at it as a “yarn collection”. Until it actually gets knit, that is.
Enjoy your “slacker” weekends. You deserve it!!!!!

  19. Have a great weekend away. It’s more important to spend time with the people that you love than to worry about a sneakup. You def. deserve the time off!

  20. Hmmm…. wondering if you meant 350 degrees rather than 250??? Hope you’re having a delightful getaway…aren’t daughters the best????

  21. I have a question on the Wollmeise. I never get to read about it because i seem to always miss it. What type of wool is the one you carry? I went to their site but they have different choice. The cake looks yummy and i hope you have a wonderful time with your daughter.

  22. i wish about the knitting time this weekend! at least tomorrow is probably a bust. my son is in marching band, and they have a competition, and then my inlaws want to take us out for our anniversary (which was 2 weeks ago, lol) so we’re probably going to go to (get this) Quaker Steak and Lube. yeah. a nascar steakhouse. WHEEEEE! here’s hoping sunday is more conducive to knitting!

  23. Yeah, I’m another one who automatically thinks of MBFGW when I see the word “bundt”!

You and KD have a wonderful weekend! And I don’t mind taking a break before the next sneak up—gives me time to practice my lace moves before the Wollmeise gets here!

  24. No, you’re not the only one! That cake sounds fabulous; I love poppy seed muffins and cakes.

I hope that you really are having a great weekend! (And no, you’re not a slacker. You’re making time for yourself like everyone says you’re supposed to.)
