St. Louis Fall – 90 Degrees, FPS
I am ignoring the fact that it was 90 degrees here today. It’s FALL and that’s all there is to it. I only have to continue reading through all of your fun Fall comments from Monday’s post, to keep me in the right spirit! I must say – I get hungry reading those posts. All that talk about wonderful soups and stews, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin cheesecake, PSL’s, crunchy apples, etc. It’s best to read those comments right after a filling meal. Otherwise, I find myself peering into the pantry and rooting around in the freezer. (And you all know that there is nothing in my freezer except a bunch of frozen chicken br*asts and half used bags of frozen veggies.)
Hey – we added two more Free Patterns for you on this blog! There is one from Monica Jines, done up in Wollmeise (but of course beautiful with any of your sock yarns.) Monica just sent me a large box of 8 different patterns that we will be offering for sale here. I absolutely love her designs. You’ve seen some of her designs at Cherry Tree Hill already. The other free pattern is from Yarnissima and is the much talked-about Firestarter pattern. I can’t wait to try this one, as it has a very interesting heel and beautiful pattern. Enjoy these free downloads, and watch for more in the future. (I have Baby Monkey, but I’d love for a couple of you to test knit it for me before I put it up. I’d like it knit with Crystal Palace Merino 5, and possibly another sport weight that we carry here. Anyone have time to whip up a pair for me and try out the directions?)
It’s time to welcome more Loopy Groupies to the bunch! Remember, you reach Loopy Groupie status when you have placed your 6th order with us. Back to Fall – do you find that your decorating tastes have changed? I look at some of the things that I have used for Fall decorations over the years, and …. I don’t like some of it any more. Should I get rid of it? Should I save it for sentimental reasons? (WH would say get rid of it.) Do you decorate your house for the different seasons and/or holidays? We have a “garden window” over the sink in the kitchen. I usually change stuff out in there for the season. Other than Fall and Christmas, I don’t decorate the rest of the house too much. Frankly, I’d rather be knitting.
Just a reminder – we’ll be out of town Friday morning through Sunday night, so orders placed Thursday evening and through the weekend will begin shipping out on Monday. Also – no blog on Friday, but I’ll be back on Monday to tell you any new things I learned at college this weekend. (Parents Weekend for College Guy – yay!) Also, new stuff will go up on the website next week, including some Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Solids that we bought at a great price and will pass on to you!

It’s still on the warm side here in TX as well. Just remember: it’s still technically summer til Friday (and even then we still have to wait til October for steady cooler temperatures, at least here).
I just found the Firestarter pattern right before you posted…YAY! I am so excited! I am waiting to stumble upon a perfect colorway…
Have a great weekend!

I’m a big de-clutterer, so I would get rid of the fall stuff you don’t like any more. More room for yarn storage! I tried to avoid trashing things though, so you could probably find somewhere to donate it to – a thrift shop or salvation army for example. That way a student or someone else on a tight budget can bust a seasonal decoration groove.

I can test knit the pattern for you. I am flying out of town to my brother’s wedding (flying=knitting time, Wedding = 2 days no work) tomorrow. I also happen to have some of that yarn in my stash (let’s be honest, what yarn do you sell that I don’t have in my stash?). Just let me know

I would find a new home for the old things. Are they really sentimental? Do you have a specific memory of the item? Is it something that you really can’t bear to part with or it’s just something you bought? Those are the questions that I use to decide what to keep and what to part with.

No better here in KC…but it’s a lot cooler on the other side of the front in Omaha! Sigh. I’m ready for soup!! Oh well, I’m working on my brother’s Christmas socks with some CTH Java I was delighted to get from you….at least I’m *looking* at fall-ish colors!!! I do decorate for fall (how can I not, when I have a 10 year old daughter?) and love it. It’s my favorite time of year too! I like your candles but I’ll tell you what I did to make mine homey. Same style: hurricane with a pillar. I used (cheap) coffee beans and a golden candle. The coffee beans provide a nice dark and fragrant accent. You could mix it with star anise and/or cinnamon sticks too! How homey! And don’t forget to decorate with bowls of autumn colored yarns! (All from the Loopy Ewe of course!)

I don’t have any fall decorations. I would probably try to find them a new home, I hate to see anything just thrown away. I can’t wait to see the pattern for the Baby Monkeys. I know a little girl that could get some use out of some of my leftovers.

Hi, Sheri –
It’s on my list to try, so it would be serendipitous!
I’d be happy to test-knit the baby Monkeys, if you don’t already have a surfeit of volunteers
I hope it cools down so you can truly enjoy your fall — I’ll send cooling thoughts your way.

I don’t decorate for fall, but then again I’m in a tiny apartment with barely enough room for our stuff, let alone decorations (or a proper stash!). It was windy and cloudy today, the first day it actually felt like September and not August. It was cold enough when I left for work to justify putting on a scarf! Yay!

At this time in NE it is beautiful and the weather has cooled down. Oh I am so happy about that. Decorating for Halloween is a big thing. I love the fall. As for things I don’t like anymore, out they go give away mostly, trash some. I hate clutter. More room for yarn. Hope you have a great weekend at College with CG. Hugs

Yeah, it’s supposed to be in the 80′s here tomorrow. Considering it was 45 when I woke up 2 mornings ago, it’s a bit of a drastic temperature swing. I don’t care, I’m still telling myself it’s fall! We’ve been hitting the orchard every week for fresh apples!!!

Wow- look at all the new groopies! Wonderful!
I do put out some decs for fall, mainly on the mantle, front door & porch, and a few other places. Not a ton of stuff. Taste changes over the years, if you don’t love it, get rid of it. I have things I bought when we were first married – 20 years ago – that just don’t do it for me anymore and I’ve passed it on. (some of it is stuff I was given that I never did really love -oops!)

Well, I’m probably the wrong person to ask about whether or not you should part with the decorations you no longer like – I tend to keep many, many things for sentimental reasons…good luck with your decision!
And, enjoy Parents Weekend – I’m sure all will have a great time!
As far as food goes, I just tried the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin as SB today – never mind that it is LOADED with calories, I just needed it today and it was sooo worth it! : )

i agree with your husband– get rid of it. give it to someone else who likes it or donate it to a church thrift shop! you can always take photos of stuff to remember them by, but why add clutter to your life if you’re not going to use the stuff anymore?

The only time of the year I ever decorate is during Fall, for Hallowe’en, Thanksgiving, and Christmas… The rest of the year, the house kind of falls by the wayside
All the good holidays are at the end of the year!
I can sympathize with the 90-degree September… I used to go to Mizzou and also attended Kansas State University, and I remember, having moved from the East Coast (where there were “real” seasons), why the weather didn’t seem to obey the months in the Midwest! My freshman year of college, during Fall semester Finals week, it was 70 degrees one day, and the next morning we woke up and there was 7″ of snow on the ground. My 8 years in the Midwest were CERTAINLY an experience and made me appreciate the change of seasons I had as a kid!!

It was 84 here today, but it was a beautiful day! Now, Friday, for the HS football game, it is supposed to 85, humid, & possible showers. That’s not what the band members wanted to hear with their heavy wool uniforms. Oh well…
My family loves fall, with the fruits of the harvest, as long as the pretty colored leaves remain on the trees. But, we are not looking forward to what that signals, 7 months with no leaves on the trees, the uglies, and very cold weather!
Then, we can’t wait for spring, & leaves on the trees again. Sigh!
Have a great Family Weekend with WG! I wish we could go up for my son’s Family Weekend in a couple of weeks. They have two really special performances by the Alan Parson’s Project Band on campus, but my son will be working all weekend for the band stuff. That, coupled with my fractured back that refuses to heal, will keep us home. It just was not meant to be. Oh well.

I’d knit Baby Monkeys but I’m sooooo slow you probably don’t want me to. I say get rid of the decorations you don’t like anymore. It’ll leave more room for yarn. My tastes have definitely changed over the years and I am slowly getting rid of things as I go. ‘Course when you have an elementary age kid, you end up having to have more of some kinds of things than you normally might. I love your decorations btw.
Are those coffee beans???? They are aren’t they! Oh how I love the idea of coffee beans supporting candles! All that lovely coffee smell. Yum! Unfortunately both DH and DD would say YUCK! Hmmm, maybe I could do that in my studio though. It’d keep them out. Which in the months preceding the holidays is a good thing.
We had a little blustery weather run through today. It was great! It put me completely into a Fall mood. Time to root out the holiday decorations. I think tomorrow I’ll buy a door wreath. You are such an enabler, Sheri!

I wish I lived closer (and was a faster knitter)–I’d love to test-knit for you!
I sympathize over the 90F weather—when I was growing up, we always got those kinds of temperatures the first week of school. It’s still too warm here, too, but not THAT warm.
I agree with those who say to get rid of the decorations you don’t like anymore—if you can give them away, it might be easier. (Not that I follow my own advice. I’m the greatest pack rat that ever was!)
Have a great weekend!

I usually decorate some for fall, but my big thing is Christmas…I don’t have any advice to offer on what to do with your old stuff – I am really bad about keeping EVERYTHING!
Have a great weekend with CG!

Have a fun weekend! (Geeze, it’s kinda weird saying that on a Wednesday post, but at least it’s Thursday morning now.)
I was very stubborn and didn’t turn our A/C back on until yesterday, when it was so muggy and miserable that I had to give in. Stupid heat.
I don’t really decorate with the changing seasons. The only changes I tend to make are to put up the new pictures of Anna when we take them.

Sheri, I love the candles and coffee beans – anything that makes the house smell like coffee is a good thing! I’d get rid of the older decorations – I find that holding on to items I don’t use any more and aren’t sentimental clogs up my storage space and discourges me from finding good new stuff! Also seems to clog up my decorating mojo.

I have really good *intentions* of decorating for the seasons.
Then reality sits back, has a good laugh at my expense, and reminds me that decorating should come somewhere behind, oh, say, “doing the laundry that is rivalling Everest in size of pile” and “do dishes that are threatening to become sentient”.
But if I had more time? Oh, I’d totally be a decorator girl. I love all that seasonal stuff, and my mom has those old decorations (like the cardboard ones from schoolrooms) that she puts up for every single holiday, so I’ve got it in my blood.

And my decorating tastes definitely change. Starting about now, there’s an afghan or throw on every sofa/loveseat/chair we frequent. I want more red and green in the house, whereas in the summer, it’s more bluesy. Candles aren’t burned much in the summer, but are in every room as fall settles in.

I am now an official Loopy Groupie! I got my package yesterday and WOW! Thanks for being so generous! You have kicked off my fall season to a good start. I have jumped into socks with both feet. I am working on Christmas since there are only 95 days left to go. In the meantime here is a recipe for you. It is one of my favorites.
Mexican chicken stew
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, roughly chopped
4 large cloves garlic, roughly chopped
2 jalapenos, seeded and sliced
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried cumin
1 (28-ounce) can chopped tomatoes
3 cups shredded cooked chicken ( I use a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store)
Few dashes Worcestershire sauce
3 to 4 cups chicken stock
1 lime
1 cup cooked white rice
Kosher salt
Sour cream, for garnish
Fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and saute for 1 to 2 minutes. Add garlic and jalapeno and sweat until soft and translucent. Add spices and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant and aromatic. Add tomatoes, chicken, Worcestershire, and stock.
Bring to a simmer and cook 20 minutes.
Cut the lime in half, squeeze juice into the pot, and then add the juiced halves as well.
Add white rice and cook 5 minutes longer to warm rice through. Season, to taste, with salt.
Ladle into bowls and garnish with sour cream and cilantro.

I like the idea of decorating for seasons/holidays/etc., but in practice, it’s limited to a couple things I hang on the front door and a seasonal fingertip towel in the master bath; I don’t even manage to get a Christmas tree up every year. (Any decorations in my house have to be able to either avoid the notice of or survive the interest of my autistic son, plus I don’t have a whole lot of storage space for off-season decorative items [I need the room for yarn!]).
Decorative items that I really don’t like anymore — mostly I’m pretty good about unloading them, but there’s a few items I inherited that I feel like I ought to offer to someone else in the family first. For the stuff that I bought, though, I’ll cheerfully pass it on to someone else; if it’s got sentimental value, I can always take a picture first, and then I have a memory that takes up much less space. (In your case, you could always ask your kids whether item X is meaningful to them, and if it is, hand it over
.)

I personally don’t decorate at the moment, since I take care of my mom and it’s her house where we live and she used to be a grade school teacher. She decorates for EVERYTHING: Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day…. She does it really well, but our basement is something to behold, with all the stuff stashed down there. I won’t have to buy much when I get my own place, though.
When I did have my own place, I decorated, though not as much as Mama. I did for the seasons and major holidays and that was it. Perhaps my next place, I’ll do more.
Enjoy your college weekend!

My long time favorite or the son’s current university. Doesn’t help that my sister (who I see about three times a year) is a grad of the local favorite, and will be there with her young son. Split decision. Just yell “Go team!! Go get ‘em.”
Please consider donating the fall decorations that are out of favor with you to a local teacher. Beginning teachers literally have NOTHING to enhance their classrooms with. In the elementary grades and early middle school, a few well-placed decorations can really make a classroom seem more comfortable and welcoming. Hope you can connect with someone who can really use them.
Have a great time!

Thanks so much for the patterns. Hope you have a wonderful weekend with CG, and that you get lots of knitting done!

It’s 90 degrees in Texas today too and it looks like it will stay that way for at least another two weeks. I’m still insisting that it’s fall though. I got out my seasonal placemats yesterday and I’m making chili tonight because IT”S FALL!
Have a great weekend!

I know you are very busy, but just a note to tell you that becoming a Loopy Groupie is the high point of my knitting life so far, so you can understand my disapointment, when I did not see my name on the list. Just kidding, I am not upset. I really enjoy your blog, your store and all of its wonderful treasures, Thanks and keep up the great work. Pat

if you dont like it anymore, toss it! however, if you have older kids, see if any of them would like it first. i know id be sad if my mum got rid of stuff she didnt realise i loved. just my two cents.

I agree with Tola…if you don’t like it, pass it along, toss anything that won’t store well, and if you’re on the fence, put it away. I love to rediscover things like that.
A big thanks for the new free patterns! I’m pretty sure something in my Loopy Stash will be perfect for those Firestarters…and if not, time to get something red! Isn’t it funny how we go through color phases? Pink always floats my boat, but I have flirtations with blues and greens…sometimes one, sometimes the other.
Have a great Parents’ Weekend! Drive safely and enjoy yourselves!

Have fun at Parent’s Weekend!
If the decor you have is not to your liking anymore, but it’s in good shape, you could take it to a local consignment shop to sell and then you can buy more decor (or yarn). Or, some church or group might be interested in those things and you could donate it and get the warm fuzzies for doing so.
I’d be glad to be a Baby Monkey test knitter! My SIL’s baby is having her baby Jan 2 (scheduled C-section) so I have a baby to give them to. Just email me if you still need test knitters.

WOW!! I shamelessly ordered some Fiesta Boomerang in Sheri’s chevron scarf colors on Tuesday afternoon and thought the package would be mailed out on Monday. Obviously cannot read with understanding. It came today. Is Sheri’s customer service the BEST? Have a fun weekend.
P.S.
I for one love the summer. And we are having some this weekend.

I have a hutch when you enter our house. I usually decorate it seasonally. I too haven’t decorated much. I think when you get older it doesn’t matter as much. I don’t know why. I do love fall, getting back from vacation I will be getting out my pumpkins & scarecrows this week. Our weather is seasonally cool today, like 62. Mostly like Oregon weather. It does feel good. Making stews this week. Hope you had a great time at college.

I tend to decorate for fall and winter more than spring and summer. Maybe because I’m staying inside more during the first two?
