Wednesday
Hi there! First of all, a big big thank you to all of you who are so wonderful and kind and encouraging, even when you miss Wollmeise again! So many of you wrote order notes that just brightened our day! (Ok - brightened our night. We were working on orders late into the night!) We really appreciate your business and your kindness. Please know that we’re getting these out as fast as possible, but it does take an extra day or two during Sneak Ups.
I did feel the need to address something in the blog. While 98% of you have been wonderful, 2% of you are not happy. I know it’s disappointing to be watching the website for something, and then miss it. If I had my way, we’d just announce the time and day we were adding new products, and you wouldn’t have to pay such close attention to things here! But remember, we don’t do that because so many hop on and shop at once, that it has killed the website. We have tested the web capacity by having daytime Sneak Ups these last couple of times, and for the most part it works ok. (A couple of glitches yesterday when people checked out simultaneously with the last skeins of something, but we’re figuring out ways around it for the future.) But it doesn’t work ok enough to pre-announce again. This is just the way we have to work it. It’s not a “marketing ploy” or something meant to create stress - it’s the most efficient and effective way for us to update the website on a regular basis, for you.
We also order a lot. I have tried to generically reassure you of that in past blog posts, but I still had someone wonder this morning why I don’t order more yarn: “Why don’t you just order enough so you can stock it? Or is making an artificially high demand more profitable for you?” Now that just makes me a bit cranky. (Or maybe it makes me a lot cranky.) We have not, nor will we ever, artificially do anything here for profitability. I don’t believe in it, and it doesn’t work, anyway, even if your values allowed you to do something like that. We order the maximum amount that our indie dyers can produce, and we get orders from them as often as they can dye them up for us. Period. Remember, these are wonderfully talented individuals doing all of this on their own. There is only so much that they can produce. We had 330 skeins of Wollmeise yesterday, gone in 2 hours. (I can see when the last skein was sold.) We had 340 patterns from Wendy. She is sending me 450 more on Friday, just because she has printed her heart out all week long and was able to get a bit more done! (She doesn’t want to do it by pdf. You can check her blog last week for her reasoning, which I happen to agree with.) We also get 350-500 skeins of Dream In Color per order, every single month, and I know those sell out usually in a day. We have regular standing orders with all of our dyers and most all of our “main” yarn companies, just to insure that we keep getting great yarn in here for you, all the time. By having a good number of indie dyers, it insures that new batches from at least a few of them will be in every week or two, even if the one you were waiting on, sold out quickly. We will continue to do our very very best to serve you well and keep you supplied. This business is extremely important to us, and we take it very seriously. Now that I have attached numbers to some of these things, maybe it will help more of you to understand that it’s not a matter of not ordering enough. We order the maximums. The demand is high for many of these yarns/patterns, and we will continue to get stock in to fill it - as often as possible, and as much as possible.
There. Cranky rant is over. Back to packing up your orders and sending them on their way with hugs and many thanks to each one of you. 98% of you are just the best!

Sheri- You do a great job! When I miss a sneak up, I figure that I am not supposed to have it (whatever I am eyeing) at that given time. I don’t get cranky with you.
I will get my chance sometime!
Have a great Wednesday!

I was so excited that I got some of the Bart & Louise bamboo yarn from Zen String and I shopped through the site for a little while! People should not be so worried! It seems to me that certain dyers are hotter than others, for the moment. Having said that, there was a time, not so long ago that I tried to get the Bart & Louise colorway and the minute that it was put up, it was gone and so were all of the other colors from Zen String. The bottom line is at some point, Wollmeise will not as hot anymore as it is now and skeins will be available because there will be some other new dyer in the store that everyone wants to get their hands on. Anyway, the yarn is so much sweeter when you do finally get it, isn’t it? You are doing great, Sheri, not to worry. Happy Wednesday!

I’m new to this website and have been very pleased and excited to see so many kinds and colors of yarn. I too was disappointed that I didn’t get what was on my Wish List, but at least I ordered one thing that had been out of stock, so it wasn’t a total let down. Keep up the good work, Sheri, and I appreciate all your hard work to try to make everyone happy. I will keep checking daily for my other Wish List items, and I know, eventually, the Yarn Gods will smile upon me!

Sheri,
You and your crew are simply wonderful. The people who are complaining must not appreciate all the hard work, thought, and heart that obviously go into your business, and those are the things that keep me, and I’m sure others as well, coming back to you time and again, even if/when I don’t get that one particular skein that I’m eyeing. Thank you for all that you do!

Don’t let the trolls get you down, Sheri. You’re doing a great great job, and if they think they can do it better, let them open their own shop. We’ll all still come here to you. Maybe you should invite them to the “warehouse” for a gander at what you do, and let THEM help you pack late into the night, unpack the new orders, sort, and photograph everything.
(Either that, or blame Wendy - she keeps showing us all the yummy yarns she’s knitting, and we all want some. Hee hee! J/K Wendy!)
Anyway, you’re doing great, and we love you, and I love all the yarns I HAVE managed to score from you! (It’s probably a good thing it’s not always available, or no one in my house would have food, clothing, or electricity.)

You know, I just choose to believe that most people are good, honest people doing their very best. I would hope they would do the same for me. I’ve missed a few things waiting for something else to come in so I could get $75. But, amazingly, my life has gone on quite nicely without a certain yarn ( which I couldn’t get to until sometime in 2009) or stitch markers shaped like sheep. Aren’t there bigger things to get upset about in toady’s world? . I appreciate all you are doing - the huge variety of products offered - but especially the personal touch you bring to every order. “Don’t let ‘em get you down”.

I have to admit that I think of the sneak ups as a game…if I catch one great! I tend to load up my cart, then delete things to try to be reasonable. If I don’t order everything at once then I’ll go back a few hours later or the next day and look again to see what’s left…somehow I seem to spend more money with this method! And the game is almost over because I’m running out of yarn storage space!

Sheri,
Don’t worry about the cranky people, you still have tons of loyal customers that absolutely love you and all the work you do just to bring us sock yarn that rocks! No matter how new and addicted we are!
I love reading everyones comments on here- all so funny and friendly. I’ll have to get the courage to comment omre often.
I was one of the amazingly lucky people who got their hands on some Woolmeise. Just one skein, I really did want to leave more for everyone else so we could all have some. I have to say I happened to be on as the sneak up was happening and still had to try to buy three different colors before I found one that hadn’t sold out before I could place my order.
Happy packing- I’d come help you if I was on the same half of the country as you are!

This isn’t a complaint, really it’s not, it’s just my opinion. I have to say that I don’t entirely agree with having to be a “Loopy Groupie” in order to get advance notice of sneak-ups. I’ll never make it to groupie status if I don’t get a chance to order anything, right?
But on the other hand, I can see and agree with the concept of providing rewards for frequent shoppers.
Have you ever thought of having the occasional completely unannounced sneak-up and give us non-groupies a chance to rack up an extra sale to get us closer to groupie status?
That being said, you’ve got a wonderful selection here, and you provide great service. I love the little extras that are in each package and I’ve luckily happened upon a couple of great purchases.
Sooner or later I’ll catch the other stuff I’m waiting for. If those darn Wollmeise hogs would just leave some for the rest of us.

Many thanks for the wonderful service you provide. Some people do need to realize that indie dyers work very hard and can only produce so much at a time-esp. to deliver a top quality yarn. A couple of them are expecting babies while producing the yarn too! I placed a Loopy order yesterday-had a few skeins swiped out of my cart but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. I had some of Wendy’s patterns taken out of the cart too-but I know there are always more on the way!! I did manage to get 6 skeins of Wollmeise which is a real treat. I found the sneak up before I got the email notice so I was so fortunate. Then I came back much later and got a couple of more skeins of Zenstring and PK. Lots of colorways of different yarns were already gone when I fell upon the sneakup-but that’s okay. Anticipation is half the fun, I think! People should be patient and always realize more is coming. If I miss out, I do have X amount of options of sock yarn in my stash. I won’t say how many. We are moving soon and my best friend said the movers won’t mind all my yarn-mainly because it doesn’t weigh much! Many thanks again for such a wonderful website! All my LYS around here only carry the generic sock yarn…

I missed the Sneak Up..
I am sorting stash and recording it. I fell in love with my Wollmeise again and when I had the chance to check my mail and saw the Sneak Up…I flew over inhopes of one more skein. When it wasn’t there I didn’t pout and stomp my feet, my true reaction was yea for you…it sold out so even more colorways will be coming back. Maybe working 30 years in Emergency Radiology skews my view, but honestly not getting a second Wollmeise won’t kill me, as getting one wouldn’t cure me. Congrats to all who bought out everything….enjoy your treasures. Good job Sheri and gang.

I too think of the Sneak Ups as a game. Sometimes I’ve already blown my budget and just enjoy seeing what you *had* in stock. I never forget that it’s just YARN and someday you’ll get more of it in, and in the meantime, I’ll live my life the best I can and worry about other things.
I think some people speak before they think and in their heart of hearts they don’t mean to say the things they do. At least…I hope that the case!

If that’s all the cranky you get, well, I’m impressed at your reserve and gentle manner.
That being said, I’ve wondered recently about your sneak-up policy. You are so very nice to us to put up a big load of yarns about once a week, which just makes that time very busy and hectic for you. Have you ever thought about just putting up the new yarns randomly, like you do with restocks? Especially now that your sneak-ups are getting so big, and your devoted following even bigger.
Obviously, I’m not complaining about your service, I’m just wondering if the status quo is best for your business now that it’s grown so much!

Sheri,
I’m sorry people are making you cranky! I’ve decided that for me, sneak ups aren’t even worth it, because just the thought of it gives me an anxiety attack, lol. So I usually browse and piddle around, and was even able to nab some Dreams in Color on Sunday - which I definitely wasn’t expecting. So, see? It IS possible to get what you’re looking for… it just takes a little patience.
Besides, while my experience has been limited, I haven’t found anyone better online to order from. The customer service at the Loopy Ewe is superb, the affordability is much appreciated, and the selection (though sometimes picked through) is grand. Besides, wouldn’t it go as common sense to know that when there’s yarn out there that EVERYONE is dying to try, then the demand is going to be high, therefore the supply is low?
Hang in there!

Hear, hear to all of the above. I just want to echo everyone’s encouraging comments. I live in an area with no LYS, so you, Sheri, are it for me and I’m so glad to have you. Such selection, not to mention the incredible service. Sneak-ups are a treat I look forward to because you never know what you’re gonna get! If I get something I’ve been hankerin’ for, great! If not, I usually (always!) can find something else to take its place.
Don’t be discouraged Sheri. We all love The Loopy Ewe and your whole bunch. Your hard work and personal service are greatly appreciated. Now, about that knitting on the porch…I’m on my way.

I can’t blame you for getting cranky about this. I miss stuff on the sneak-ups (Bart & Louise in the Garden, for example), but it has nothing to do with you or Loopy. I can’t understand how anyone could think you stage this for financial gain, if they’ve ever received one of your wonderful packages or read your blog regularly. It’s a quest, really, I am Captain Ahab stalking my prey. I’m pretty sure I will get my hands on some sooner or later.

Yay for Sheri! Yay for The Loopy Ewe! Yay for everything you do and change and make adjustments to in order to keep us happy!!
Thank you for all of it, and I can only imagine how hard it is to be happy about the 98% and try not to think about the 2%. (It’s amazing how 2% can poop on 100% of your day!!) I probably snagged a much-wanted skein in yesterday’s update, but it was one I’ve missed before, so I earned it.
People who get agitated about not getting what they wanted: how many skeins do you have in your stash that you HAD TO HAVE RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD GIMME GIMME and how long has it been there? (Self-flagellation: I have stash I would have crawled over people to get to when it went up, and now it’s been on the shelf for months!)
And sometimes your good-customer behaviour leads to a surprise reward: I got there in time for the Wollmeise yesterday, but I decided to take a pass this time since I got lucky with one last time - and when I went to Knit Night last night, a friend who lived in Germany for several years presented me with…….A SKEIN OF WOLLMEISE!!! I’m convinced it was karma. (Well, and the awesomeness of my friend.)

I’m like Michelle and Jen - the sneak up’s are like a game. It adds a bit of fun/challenge to peek on the site every so often to see if I can score on some yarn that I’ve had my eye on.
But let’s keep it in perspective, folks…it’s YARN. We should all be on our best behavior and be civilized!
Shery - I love your site! It’s fun, user-friendly, and well-constructed. I’ve been very happy with the service I’ve received from your shop and the selection is great. I mean, really - where can you find so much beautiful sock yarn in one place? I live in an area that doesn’t really have much in the way of a good LYS. I think your shop rocks

Sheri, Don’t let that 2% get you down! It is hard to fathom, when you and your helpers are obviously working SO hard to please our voracious appetites! Your site is the best, best selection, most fun to order from, most excellent customer service! And as many others have said - gosh, it’s only yarn, patterns, stuff! We will live another week if we don’t get exactly what we want, when we want it. I, for one, know that while I love to Have it in my Hot Little Hands this Minute, truly, most of it sits and waits for me to get to it. Cause I don’t know anyone who can knit more than one item at one time. (Even though we may have a half dozen socks going) We all just have two hands, and that includes our beloved indie dyers too.
Thank you for putting up with our whining!
p.s. I had the good fortune to try a pumpkin spice latte yesterday and it was yummy! (I still think I like the eggnog one better, though.)

I did my part! I got my Loopy Groupie update (which is really fabulous of you to send, by the way), I checked the website, I saw all the Wollmeise, I bought NONE of it, because I have read the comments of those who keep missing out on it, just so they would have a chance. I, too, have a respectable stash of “I have to knit this right now” skeins and cakes waiting patiently for me to get to them.

I deal with a lot of cranky people at work - I especially get annoyed when they say someting so completely obvious that I just feel like writing back saying, DUH, why didn’t we think of that??? People from the outside always seem to think they can run your business better than you, but the truth is that there are a lot of factors going on in the background that they don’t even know and can’t consider. For instance, there’s the ability to offer a variety of yarns to your customers in a limited amount of space. There’s the fact that most of it is hand-dyed and that’s what is so wonderful about it. If someone wants quantity, they could order red heart! But for quality, it may be a little wait. I really dislike the fact that we have become a society of “I want it NOW’s” Like that girl in Willy Wonka that gets sucked into the nut machine.
Don’t let it get to you. I love the idea of being able to try a variety of yarns in a number of colors. Even if I have to wait to be able to do it. (I’m on a yarn diet right now, though.)

I have always thought the Customer Service at the Loopy is top notch. You hang in there and remind yourself that the crabby ones probably just don’t understand the business aspect of yarn addiction! They may be only thinking from a shopping perspective.

Geesh, some people. I agree wholeheartedly with all the above posters…you freaking ROCK, Sheri, and folks who have problems with the way you run your business clearly have no clue about supply & demand. Personally, I’ve been lusting after some Wollmeise, and I missed this update (by less than an hour…how’s that for irksome?), but sheesh, it’s not YOUR fault that this yarn is so popular!! I do a bit of dying myself, I KNOW how hard it can be for an indie dyer to cough up hundreds & hundreds of skeins at a time. Good heavens.
I wonder if this 2% isn’t just the type of people to complain about ANYthing. Y’know, if it wasn’t this, then they’d come up with something else to fuss about. Tell ‘em to stuff a sock in it.

I’d love to see more pictures of finished Wollmeise socks though! One day the timing will be perfect and I’ll snag that coveted skein, but in the meantime, I want to live vicariously through other people’s finished socks, and it’s a lot easier to covet when you have pictorial examples.
Life’s too short to get wrapped around the axle over sock yarn, especially when there’s more coming, and a metric shedload (as opposed to an Imperial shedload, which is slightly smaller) of other stuff right there.

I think you do a wonderful job and have one the best resources for shopping for yarn on the web! Though, I’ve never been able to buy from you, where it’s because of budgeting or missing a Sneak Up, but I still consider TLE one of my favorites! Keep up the good work…. and one day I will have some Wollmeise in my hot little hands!

I so understand what you are going through, Sheri. Any time you deal with the public, you are going to get a certain percentage who just can’t be pleased, no matter how hard you try. They are irritable, miserable people who look for ways to vent their unhappy lives. Look at all the positive responsive you are getting. People love you, and they love the Loopy Ewe. One of the reasons I sold my business after 22 years was because I had had enough of the very people who gave you grief yesterday. On the last day I owned said business, I had a b@#$chy customer who was making my life miserable. I let her have it with both barrels and walked out. Boy, did that feel good. I wouldn’t recommend that tactic, but it sure worked for me.

Hi Sheri,
I have only placed one order from you so far, but I was *so* incredibly pleased with your excellent customer service! I also love reading your blog — your cheery, upbeat attitude brightens my day. I am so sorry to hear that a few people were so (unreasonably) upset by missing out on their desired yarn…as others have said before me, it is sock yarn and not some life or death situation. Please don’t be discouraged — we love The Loopy Ewe! {{{hugs}}}

Hang in there Sheri! You and the entire Loopy team do an above and beyond fabulous job! Its obvious to me how much you care about making your customers happy and it saddens me greatly to see 2% of the people spoiling it for you. You are just the sweetest person and I love doing business with you. If I miss something in a sneak up, could I go out and get it from another vendor? Sure I could. But, I’d rather wait and buy it from TLE. That’s what top notch customer service gets you.
I wish people in today’s world would practice more patience and really think about how fortunate they are and how much they already have. It can’t always be about instant gratification. When its meant to be, it will be.
I will always be a loyal loopie fan and wish you continued success for as long as you wish to keep TLE going! And, if I lived in your area, I would so come over and help pack boxes. Or make a PSL run - whatever would be of most assistance. : )

Sheri, thanks for being so great! I was shocked when I got up this morning and saw the email that my order from yesterday was ready for shipping and noticed it was sent 2:29AM (ET)!!! You really must of had a long night!
I am so hesitant to order from most places online, but find myself looking for excuses to order from TLE! I am just not sure how much longer my bank account can hold out….Thanks for the great products, superior service and tons of fun!

Sheri, I think you are awesome! Your selection is amazing and your service is the best! I love the sneak-ups… it’s fun to see that whole crop of goodies pop up at once! Sometimes I miss something and sometimes I just have to pass and wait for the next opportunity… but that’s okay because I’m a yarn collector. It would be no fun to have them all at once (well it would… but then what would I have to look forward too?)
Anyway, if 98% of your customers are happy, you are clearly doing an outstanding job! At least 2% of the population can’t be pleased anyway! And you know what… I always figured that the Sneak-Ups were a bit of a marketing ploy… and I thought you were brilliant for doing it this way. There’s nothing wrong with wisely marketing your products by creating enthusiasm and suspense for your customers!
So don’t apologize and don’t let those 2% get to you. They are the same people who are complaining to the person behind the cash register everywhere they go.
So Rock on sistah… and have a great day!

Sheri, I think y’all are doing a terrific job! I thank you, Web Guy, WH, KD, and all of your wonderful helpers for all that they do to make shopping at TLE a great experience! For instance, Web Guy worked hard on the web site this summer, to make things work smoother for shopping there, including putting a warning to people that a particular yarn is very popular & in short supply at a given point in time. So, if yarn happens to hop out of people’s carts, they were warned…
Those of us who have been shopping at TLE have learned over time that if particular yarns or patterns, etc that we really want are expected to be in a sneak up and are wildly popular, then you just have to go for those first and check out immediately, not shop to see what else is there. Then, if you want to do more shopping, you do that afterwards. For instance, my primary objectives yesterday were not Wollmeise, but rather Cider Moon and Wendy’s patterns. So, I went in, picked up what I wanted out of what was still available of those, and immediately checked out. I did go back and bought some ZenString afterwards. For those who miss the update, whether by an hour for a popular yarn, or more, for something also popular, there is always next time. Most of your indie dyers have been repeating at least their popular colors, so people will get a chance, in time. Patience, everyone!
Many thanks, again, Sheri & Crew! Don’t worry about the cranky ones. You all are doing a terrific job! Have a good day! (BTW, I gave in & asked my husband to turn on the furnace this morning. The high temp here for the week is only 73, tomorrow; we won’t even get out of the 60’s the rest of the week, either before or after. When I get cold, I get achy, so I buckled; I guess that makes me somewhat of a sissy.

I have loved every one of my orders and was pleased to snag Wendy’s patterns & some Shibui Knits yesterday! You and your crew make me want to order all the time - as you can see by how often I’ve ordered lately!! Anyway, I’m sure everyone will find the yarn they’re looking for in one of your future Sneak Ups. You have the best selection and best customer service out there, and I will always be a big Loopy fan! Hey Sheri. Quite saying you are sorry! If people want to b*tch, let them shop somewhere else. You don’t need them! You guys do a great job, you have a great variety. I have had the chance to try different dyers because my “usual suspects” were sold out. I love that! I have been trying to get at least one skein of as many different dyers as possible. Yes, there are some I love more than others. But if I had stuck to the usual ones, I never woud have found new loves!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You make it possible for little crafters like me to get my products out to more people.

Sheri, I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get 2 skeins of Wollmeise yesterday! I’d missed the last couple sneak ups too so it was especially nice to get something this time around. Like someone else I also lost 1 skein out of my cart at the end- those are the breaks and maybe someone else was supposed to have that last one!
I love the sneak ups and can’t imagine a better way to do it, besides if there was a better way you’d be doing it. I don’t know what the percentage of cranky customers in the business world is but if you only have 2% I think that’s pretty awesome….remember the other 98% of us will keep coming back for more!

Sheri -
Don’t let them drag you down to their level. For whatever reason they are unhappy and want to be sure you have a pissy day too. It’s possible it has very little to do with the amount of yarn and maybe it’s just a personal problem with them. That’s how I TRY to think of it. Hey, I missed Wollmeise the first sneak up - big woo. You got more (and I noticed even more colors) asap and will again. Scan through some random blogs you won’t find one without a good word to say about you and the loopy ewe. You may not know it, but kind words are being spoken about you and your shop quite often. Besides, isn’t your son coming home a day or two - SMILE! Here’s a hugOOO

I…. don’t know what to say. I can repeat everything that everyone has said, about your awesomeness. But it’s already been said. I can also point out that you *could* order 3000 skeins of Wollmeise, and then everyone could order it…. in 2009. Maybe. Possibly later. I could also look a little shifty-eyed and hope that my expressions of sadness, which are NOT a criticism of you or your wonderful business, at missing Wollmeise again haven’t added to your crankiness. I seem to have a small guilt complex.
Instead, I will tell you that I’m getting some Sweet Georgia off someone on ravelry, and, since I don’t have what she wants for a trade, I told her that I would rather pay her in TLE gift certificates than in PayPal.

I know I was cranky (quietly, to myself) the very first time I missed out on something I really wanted, but I ended up getting other tasty yarns that were delightful and enjoyable. So I waited patiently and eventually got what I was after. (Knitting made me a more patient person. You just can’t have that gorgeous pair of socks immediately…and sometimes it works that way with the yarn too!)
Don’t let the cranky people get you down. Everyone else is thrilled with you, and the few rainclouds will eventually come around.

Indeed. If I were in that big a hurry to get Wollmeise, I could order directly from Claudia. If I wanted DiC right away, there’s other shops that have it in stock (including my LYS, where I did buy a skein to see what all the fuss is about
). And if you could order any larger batches of the popular stuff, I’m sure you would.
I’m not in a hurry. I have enough yarn for years of knitting. I don’t have to own every single yarn I want, and I certainly don’t have to own it Right Now. And I’d rather wait until demand slows down and I get a chance at nifty yarns here, because not only does the Loopy Ewe have good service, it has perks for frequent buyers. (This is the main reason I do most of my sock yarn shopping here rather than at other online stores with good selection and service: Frequent Buyer Bonus effectively translates as 10% discount over time! And buying here is fun!)
(That said, I’m looking forward to several months from now, when WM Vergibmeinnicht, Pfauenauge, and Rittserporn stay in the shop for more than two hours at a time when I have yarn money on hand!)

Sheri and Staff are doing a great job. I live on the other side of the fence, and I would like you all to know that Sheri is the best kind of buyer to work for. She does routinely buy as much yarn as I can provide her with, and has it available to you in very short order, with amazing customer service and buyer perks! I’ve even been know to buy my own yarn from her just to get a TLE package in the mail!
I would humbly submit that the limited nature of handpainted yarns contributes a great deal to their appeal. Each dyer leaves their fingerprint on the yarn in terms of color combinations and dye execution. It’s impossible to “mechanize” or streamline the hand dye process without losing the special, individual character that holds so much fascination for the knitter.
TLE has such a great assortment of hand dyers, and a Sneak Up nearly every week, that I don’t think even a disaapointed shopper can pine away too very long before another amazing skein comes their way.

Imagine me (pretend you know what I look like) going to the mail box and getting this gi-normous box. I was expecting something much smaller. I opened it on the street. Not Loopy obssesed AT ALL. Then it hit me. I’m a Loopy Groupie!! So I danced and sang my way to the porch where DH was hiding the kids from the crazy lady who used to be mommy. (Imagine a one person conga line..I’m a Loopy Gropie, I’m a Loopy Groupie) I danced around a bit more and left for a PTO meeting with my goodie bag that could not be left at home, lest the non-Groupies breath upon it.
Needless to say, I Love Sheri and the Loopy Ewe!!

It also gives me the excuse for random impulse buys when I do catch a sneak up (you know, tell the husband that it could have been gone in a matter of seconds and therefore I had to buy it now!).
I think you guys do a superb job getting the mass orders out quickly and keep stocked on stuff that I must have. No complaints from this customer!

There always have to be complaints, don’t they? You know that most of your customers love it here and we’ll still come back. Sure, I don’t always catch the sneak-ups, but it’s so exciting when I do. I did get some Wollmeise at this time, but there have been many times where I’ve completely missed out on a high demand dyer. I figure life will go on and I can get it some other time. I have a good sized stash and there will always be yet another indie dyer that I want to try. Keep up the great work and stick with what works for you. Not everyone will be happy no matter what you do.

seriously… i’m not trying to be rude or minimize the talents of the woman who dyes the wollmeise stuff… i’ve seen it online and the colors look gorgeous, but…
… is it really that nice that it has this effect on people? i’ve never seen it in person. as a yarn expert, what would you say sets it apart from all the other amazing yarns on the market? or is this just another example of that Cabbage Patch Sydrome that swept through the country in the early 80’s, leaving mothers clawing at each other to get the last Cabbage Patch box at Toys R Us?
it must be Good Stuff to inspire such emotion in people…

Sheri,
The Loopy Ewe is my favorite online store because of the personal touches and customer service. I enjoy reading the handwritten notes that arrive with my yarn (sometimes I even read them before I open the yarn!). When my husband ordered the wrong size sock blockers as a surprise gift you were very helpful in getting them exchanged for the correct size. I am a dedicated blog reader and enjoy reading about your business and getting glimpses of your day-to-day life and the challenges of running the Loopy Ewe.
I am concerned when you have to get cranky, because I can only imagine the number and content of yucky comments that would cause to you to feel the need to address them publicly. It seems that when someone opens their business to be receptive to comments and interact with customers online that they also make themselves vulnerable to this sort of negativity (I’ve seen similar incidents elsewhere online).
All this to say, I think you are very professional and seem very nice and I hope you don’t ever feel the need to withdraw or cut back on your online presence.
P.S. I look forward to sneak-ups, even when I am on a cruel self-enforced yarn diet.

I love sneak-ups! It is a game. I’ve been left out before and I’ve also scored some wonderful yarn. It is either meant to be or not. I’ve been checking for Wollmeise for days–I’m not a Loopie Groupy. I tried to get my nephew to fall asleep for over 1 1/2 hours yesterday. As soon as he fell asleep, I ran to my computer. As I was looking at what is new–the wollmeise was added to the page. That my friends means it was meant to be. I’m sure I will miss out at other times.
Thank you for your customer service, Sheri. Your little extra touches go a long way. Don’t let a few yarn crabs get you down. It is just yarn–no matter how much we obsess over it.

The way I figure it with cranky complainers is that no matter what you do to please them, they will find something to crank and complain about. It’s just the way they are.
Also, if they would read some of the thousands of knitting blogs out there in cyberworld and see the pics of how many have received Loopy Ewe yarn they would get a small vision of the amount of yarn going out of your establishment.
We MUST learn to share!
If anyone complains about not getting what’s on the sneak up, well my goodness, look around, there are HUNDREDS of skeins of gorgeous yarn still available. Yeah, its nice to get the high demand yarns, but you might want to try some of that luscious yarn still available and be pleasantly surprised. I’ve Never been disappointed in any of the yarn I’ve received, whether or not it was considered high demand.
People try some of the other yarn, you will have a great surprise.
Sheri, your yarn, your site and your customer service is fabulous! As long as you are around, I will never loose yarn weight

Emily, that is a great idea! Stagger the goodness at completely random intervals. I really do like it - but, there would be an aweful lot of very tired people - folks would be checking even more frequently. The sadistic side of me likes it!! The part of me that wants Yarntini - doesn’t like it quite that much.
Really, the e-mail letting you know an update is here? It is almost too late. The sharks they swarm on sneak up weeks. I used to think the e-mail would solve it all, but not really. I get my best yarns with VIGILANCE, CONSTANT VIGILANCE. When I am completely obsessed I check almost hourly or more - thank goodness for insomnia on those nights. I work at it and so do lots of others. Ahem, Yarntini anyone? Never mind, it is mine, all mine. Yes, greedy yarn hoarder who is out for herself only (well, maybe mom too) on Sneak Up days. I just don’t have that be nice to others with yarn ability.
Sheri, hon? YOU DO A GREAT JOB!! I rarely order elsewhere now. After you get the worsted DIC? I may never order anywhere else. If you get Habu? I will have to work with you - I have a pretty nice Habu dealer. You have the best attitude and really want people to be happy. I enjoy shopping with you and your helpers. I loved my package today. I got some wonderful yarn - and it wasn’t even sneak up yarn!
To everyone else, really - that Chinese Red ShibuiKnits? Way prettier than the picture. It has a little subtle color variation and is not as glaring as the picture. Don’t get me wrong, still red, but somehow not as strident. I am glad I took a chance!

I got the notice within minutes of it going up and I bought none of it. Don’t get me wrong, I looked and I debated, and I had a lot of fun clicking around to see what I don’t usually get to see, but I didn’t feel the urge and refrained.
I’m still so happy with the Chocolate Royale that I purchased in one of the last sneak-ups that I’m not even lusting after ANY yarn right now. The funny thing is that I had that particular colorway in my cart way back in April or May and it leapt from my cart! When I saw it again I knew I had to have it.
Delayed gratification, but oh, so sweet. It keeps me company while I work. hee

Part of the fun of the indie dyers is that you can’t just waltz out to the nearest yarn shop and pick any color you want. This was the first “Sneak-Up” for me after attaining Groupie Status — and would you believe that my computer got hit by Lightning! So, no Internet at home to get the prized notice! So, when I went into my shop today, and got the email, I high-tailed it over to the website — and managed to find $80 worth of wonderful yarn to buy! Imagine!
Ever since I have been in business, I have been amazed at the amount of “advice” from well-meaning customers on just how I should run my business! After reading Wendy’s and your blogs lately - I kinda get a little testy! You should run your businesses the way YOU want, and not give out all these “reasons” for not doing it their way! If they think it’s so easy, they should try it themselves!
I appreciate all that you do - and will continue to purchase from you (until I run out of either $$ or room!
Take the high road, and don’t let them get you down!

I’ve said it before, but here it is again…I feel so privileged to be able to shop in person in the Loopy Room, and feel like you have become a great friend as well as my dearest enabler of my yarn/sock/knitting addiction!
I was lucky to get a few Wendy patterns with this sneak-up, but I missed out on much of the Yarn Nerd and the new Wollmeise. Am I complaining? Of course NOT! Just look in my basement and you’ll see the acres of wound-but-unknitted as well as the not-yet-wound-and-therefore-unknitted stash that I have. It’s not like I’m lacking in choices of what to work on next!!! I’m know you will get more orders and I’ll be getting more yarn another day.
(Oh, but you’ll have to see the kits I’ve fallen in love with courtesy of Yarn Harlot’s blog!)
I’d love to come help you pack orders on one of my days off. Give me a call if you need some extra help (I think you have my number!). I’ll even bring the mochajavapeppermintspicepumpkinspicecaffeinefreeorfullycaffeinated-
skimorextracreamyloaded lattes!
You and your shop are the absolute BEST!!! THANKS for all you do!

Well, I wish I was on your back porch knitting too, and I would even help pack boxes just to feel all the yarn as it goes into the boxes. I think you do a wonderful job, and you can’t make everyone happy ALL the time, so I would just continue to do what works best for you and the majority. There have been many times I got to the computer too late or shopped a little to long, comparing colors and missed out, but oh well, you will get it back in again sometime.
Sounds like you need to make a starbucks run and sit and knit for a little while.
I am enjoying the cool weather today and am actually able to wear my Spice Market Wollmeise socks they are soooo comfy!

Ditto and ditto again. Let’s try not to work our talented indie dyers to death! Even if I miss Wollmeise again and again….it’s OK because I’m busy with all my previous “scores”. Besides - in reality - there isn’t THAT much difference in these yarns. There are only so many base yarns available to use and only so many colors. Mmmmmm…..lovely colors…………mmmmmm

I’m simply delighted that indie people are figuring out how to get that much volume to you! And that you’re selling out so quickly!
I must say, though, that I am greatly looking forward to a Loopy Retreat with perhaps a Trade-with-ewe swap with other Loopy fanatics that have been buying all the good stuff and sticking it in their nice stashes. Hehehe. Oh Web Guy and Photo Husband- I’d love a video of how Sherri packages up each shipment with her TLC (maybe even with a little waving to the poor route 56 post-person). You’ve got every right to be proud, as a small business, enabling small businesses. So much so that Loopy shoppers crash the website!
Mmm. All this talk of socks. I’m knitting a bagstopper on big 10.5 needles which is way too jumbo to be my preferred needle size. Perhaps I’ll cast on a sock tonight!

Sheri, you do a fantastic job. You can’t please all the people all of the time (or so the saying goes), and there are always going to be people who want things their way because a) they can’t go with the flow and accept that sometimes they’re going to miss out, and b) they just like to complain to hear themselves, because nobody else pays any attention to them. While I understand that it’s important for you to try and have happy customers (and you do), forget about the detractors. You’re never going to please them no matter what you do. I think having the Sneak-Ups at random times is a wonderful idea, and it’s the fairest thing you can do. It allows people to not have to stalk the site and get on with their lives. I didn’t get some things I wanted yesterday, but that’s okay. I have so much yarn that I could stack the skeins up and build a house out of them. If I miss out on something, there’s the chance that it will come up again. If not, then it wasn’t meant to be.
If these people are so bummed about missing out on certain yarns, they can always get them somewhere else or learn how to spin and dye their own yarn. Then they can customize it any way they want.
You’re the best, Sheri. Other than Etsy, yours and one other shop are the only two I shop at. Your service is outstanding (Mark can’t wait for the goodies you send, although he’s hoping for chocolate again soon), you’re a delight to talk to, and your customer service is second to none. You’ve done an incredible job and continue to do so. Just be proud of what you’ve accomplished and enjoy your customers, and the people who like to hear their own voices will either get with the program or go away. You don’t need that kind of grief anyway. We love you.

I always think of that old saying about making all the people happy all of the time. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t happen. But, Sheri, there’s is absolutetly nothing you can do about, nor would I bang my head against the wall trying to fix it. It’s your business, and we, all knitters, have the choice to buy to from you or a different online source. Honestly, I wouldn’t sweat it. Enjoy your business, enjoy your life, drink a pumpkin latter, and keep on knitting.

Wah, wah, wah…don’t you hate whiners???? I know that when I miss something, I will get another chance in the future….Having owned a retail business, there is NO WAY one can anticipate demand. There is also no way one can know what will be shipped and exactly when.
I think you all (not the Texas y’all, but all of your staff) do an outstanding job. I receive my orders quicker than at any other mail order business, always excellently packed and with a cheery note (which must be hard to manage at 1 AM).
Thank you!!!!!

Let me just say for everyone clamoring to get all the hot new things you are stocking that some of the ‘old’ ones are still just as fabulous as ever. Anyone tried Lorna’s Laces lately? Beautiful stuff knit up. Cherry Tree Hill is a top notch dyer with endless colors and solids. I also like good old Regia Silk, solid though they may be. They have a lovely hand and stitch definition and are so soft - great colors for mens socks.
Not trying to single out just these 3 mind you. There is just SOOO much good stuff here at one-stop-shopping Loopy Ewe. Look around and try something you haven’t yet tried. You may fall in love with something that is readily available to you.
Btw I lost out on one yarn I had picked yesterday but still got things I am very happy with. :>)

The world does not end if you do not get a skein of Wollmeise (I say that, and I love the stuff) people! There are worse situations in the world. Yarn is yarn, and yes, we all love it. But, FPS - Let’s give Sheri a break. She’s a sweet, honest, hard-working, creative woman, who is doing a bang-up job at this business. Sheri, don’t let them get you down! You’re fab, and TLE will be here for a long time, mostly because you take care of your customers (and you are a great enabler - :)! AMEN. Rant also completed. AND NO - I DIDN’T GET ANY WOLLMEISE YESTERDAY. AND IT WAS MY ANNIVERSARY, and IT was 911, FPS - get a grip!
PS - being that my anniversary is on 911 should give you some kind of idea what type of life I live, even though we were married before 2001…..

I’d help you pack orders, but I think getting my clothes laundered is at higher priority…even if I don’t want it to be. =) But actually, if you need extra help on Wednesday afternoons after/during Sneak Ups I would be delighted to do it–I don’t work on Wednesday nights anymore.

I’m glad you posted your rant. Sometimes you just need to get things like that off your chest and ranting to all of us here that love you and your store is the best way to get back the positive reinforcement you may need.
Why is it though that you can get 100 great reviews but then the 2 negative ones are what get stuck in your head & you can’t forget them? It shocks me to no end that people could accuse you of trying to make an artificial demand when you have no control over how much a dyer sends you of their product.
I’m thrilled with your store, your products and the system you have in place. Don’t change a thing!!

What’s that old saying? You can please some of the people all the time, but you can’t please all the people all the time. So stop worrying about it. I love Loopy and the customer service is the bomb!
Don’t worry about the whole cart issue. Sneak ups are not the time to leisurely shop. Yarn shopping rushes are the best! Keep the yarny-crack coming! You’ll continue to be my favorite dealer.

I think half the fun is chasing the yarn/pattern/accessory… stalking it if you will. Seeing if you can get your hands on it. It makes it so worth the wait and the effort. Yes, instant gratification would probably be even better but we need to find the bright side to things like this

Shari, the fact that you are upset about some of your customers complaining says a lot about you. It is just another sign that you do care about your knitters. There are so many businesses these days that could care less if their customers are pleased or not and this could care less attitude is not limited to the “Big Box” stores.
It think it is good that you explained that you do order the maximum your boutique dyers can supply; perhaps that has created a better understanding.
Thank you for caring about us,

When I read your blog today, I got cranky for you. I’ve shopped with you since the beginning of TLE. We’ve had several phone and email conversations over the last year. I’ve been privileged enough to visit the Loopy Room and spend time with you in person and meet the wonderful Knitting Daughter. You are a person of great integrity; you live your life, raise your family, and run your business according to your strong values. It disturbed me to hear that someone has questioned your ethics. I hope that all the support you have gotten so far and all that is surely forthcoming will dispel the negative comments you have gotten. You, your incredible family and wondeful staff are truly amazing. Thanks for running such a fabulous business. It brings joy to so many of us!!

I appreciate all the effort that you go through to find quality yarns (BTW have you seen the new Handmaiden Sock Yarn?) and getting the most skeins that you possibly can. Everyone of the yarns that you stock is awesome so even if I lose a skein of Woolmeise out of my cart, I know that I can find another great yarn. This combined with your great customer service, fun contests, and interesting blog is why I remain a diehard groopie. You need to treat yourself to a Pumpkin Latte for all your hard work! I hope you have a great “fall” day, and get to leave the house at least for a little while and get some knitting done.

You know what? I’m sure Wollmeise is fabulous - I wouldn’t know because I’ve never managed to snag any - but it’s just yarn. Right now, everyone is buzzing over it and those that don’t have any feel like they are left out of the party. But it’s just yarn, not a social status symbol. If I never get any Wollmeise, I will still continue to knit and the world will continue to spin.
I have so many gorgeous yarns in my stash. It’s not as though one particular brand of yarn is going to make me lose 10 lbs., whiten my teeth, and pay off my credit cards. It’s just yarn. I’ll use to to make lovely socks and they will make me happy, but yarn is not magic. I’m just saying. 2%ers out there? A little perspective, maybe?
Sheri, you’ve got the best customer service of any online store. Not just yarn sellers, but ANY online store. I know you work very hard at running an excellent business. Thank you for explaining the numbers and facts around the indie dyer & Sneak Up issues. There are only so many things a business owner can control. You do your best to make your customers happy and shopping at TLE is an absolute pleasure.

I want to agree with everyone on here. I love your site, your blog and your products. I know I can get almost all of them at various other websites, but I choose to get my yarn through you. Ya know why??? Your customer service is wonderful, your down to earth attitude on your blog is wonderful and the selection on your site is….won..er, amazing. Never had a glitch, and if I did I’m positive it would be resolved with no trouble. Cheer up, love…its the good with the bad. Its all part of business. You always do your best and that, in itself, is enough because it shows in everything you do here. (People just get frustrated when they can’t get what they want..when they want it. They’ll get over it, trust me. ) Carry on!

I placed 3 separate orders yesterday.
The first for Woolmeise
The second Zen String Pumpkin King and Heartstrings Lace pattern
The third Fiesta Baby Boomerand in Alaska and Heartstrings Lace pattern
I find that by doing that you can usually get what your yarn heart craves. I did find that PayPal was running a little slow on the log in - I don’t know if that was on the PayPal end or the Loopy Ewe flood of yarn buyers. Each order took about a minute to complete.
I had to buy the Fiesta in Alaska on 9/11/07 as on 9/11/08 we will be flying to Anchorage to begin two weeks of touring and cruising. I will be wearing my Alaska sock on the plane, if you know of a sock pattern named Alaska please let me know.

I just took a break to read your blog. I’m currently up to my elbows in dye and yarn. Although there may be validity to some of the complaints, those who gripe should spend a day working with one of the indie dyers. Then they would completely understand that there’s a limit to the amount one human can produce. (I think that goes for packing and shipping orders, too.)
Some of us have other issues…pregnancy, f’rinstance (congrats, Georgia!) or family stuff. I have fibromyalgia. Hand dyeing yarn is extremely physical, labor intensive work. I can dye one day, then it’s likely that I’ll have to take it easy for a while before I can get back to it.
Sheri, I think that you run your business with integrity and honesty. I appreciate how kind and encouraging you’ve been to me personally this summer (see? Surgery. Totally threw off my dyeing schedule. Bet other dyers have been through stuff this summer too..) I am honored to have my yarn at The Loopy Ewe, and like the others, try to keep the flow as even as possible. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out the way we’d like. You have excellent customer service, yes, but you’re every bit as excellent with your vendors too. You recognize that we’re just human and stuff happens. Thank you so very much.
As far as time of day and notification of SneakUp are concerned, I don’t see that it seems to matter.
I *still* haven’t been able to get any Wollemeise.
~Hugs~

Sheri & Crew (including the fabulous indy dyers and pattern creators) - Thank you. You all rock, and I’m grateful to have a place that I can order so many different items from. You’ve been more than fair in how you stock (in my opinion) - sometimes it’s easier on the West Coast, sometimes easier on the East.
Love from a very happy customer in Maryland! (who didn’t order Wollemeise, but could have)

Sheri, you’re the best! It’s insane how many addictions to indie-dyed-sock-yarn you are feeding, and you do a fantastic job. Although I was disappointed when I missed the last Sneakup, I understand that the Wollmeise can only dye so many skeins at once to send you in a month, and I know you do your best at restocking. Besides, isn’t the rarity of the yarn part of the reason we love the indie dyers so much? Would we all be clamoring just as loudly for Dream in Color if we could all pick it up at the local drugstore?
And yay Wollmeise lace yarn! I was so excited when I read that I did a little happy dance in my office chair!

I had a lot of fun yesterday putting yarn in my cart and watching it disappear…because I knew I wasn’t actually going to buy any! I’m saving for a spinning wheel, and I have Wollmeise in my stash already, so I figured I would leave it there. As Wendy said in her blog a little bit ago, it wasn’t so long ago that you couldn’t get your mitts on a skein of Apple Laine, and now that’s almost always available. It’s too bad that the 2% get under your skin, but isn’t that the way it always is with negativity…it’s so diluted! Keep your chin up! Your customer service and shop are fab and I love, love, love it!

I gotta say, that even though things sell out fast- and believe me, I had no idea about the actual NUMBERS that were involved till this post- I’m pretty much of the opinion that with all the ordering you do, at least I know that things WILL come back in stock and that I’ll have another chance. I’m not beyond waiting, you know?
I’m also a bit shocked at the sheer numbers. Wow. Really crazy!

Hi, Sheri! I certainly understand your situation, and I try not to be cranky (I would never complain)… I did just about cry when I noticed that the Wollmeise wasn’t in the “coming in soon” section of the home page, so I knew I’d missed it. It’s not like I don’t have 47 socks worth of yarn waiting for me at home, but somehow I just *need* to have more - as you should know, since you send most of it to me!
I’ll just keep on trying, and I’ll surely find other things to order in the meantime!

Last time I missed the Wollmeise, this time I didn’t, but I still didn’t get the color I wanted the most. I guess I think of it like a vacation. You can’t do or see it all, so leave a little something for next time. Who knows? You may find something better than the thing you were sad you missed.

One thing I’ve learned about you Sheri, is that you would never do anything just in order to manipulate the demand for your yarn. You have demonstrated so many times that your prime goal is to make us, your customers, happy, and you go out of your way to do that, even at times at your own expense. So thank you! The Loopy Ewe is definitely the best yarn store around!
I was interested to find out that the order comment field is used at times to leave nice messages. I wanted to do that before but figured it was only for business-related matters. Now I will be free to make those enthusiastic comments, too.

I’m sorry crankiness is ensuing! I missed the Wollmeise that I wanted yesterday. Checked as soon as I got home from work (unlike office-dwellers, I, as a nanny, chase a child rather than sit at a computer, so I cannot check at work… which may be good for my wallet!), but it was ALL gone. I told DH about it and he said, “Why don’t you start your own yarn business, then?” He wants me to make money off knitting, rather than spend it
Anyway… I figure I’ll get the Wollmeise eventually! This is the second time I missed it, and third time’s the charm, right? No reason to be cranky, I think, because it’s not like no more will ever be had ever. And it’s not like I don’t have enough yarn to knit up
I want to thank you for putting your heart into this business. You really care about your customers, and that just doesn’t happen much anymore, especially in retail. The knitting community makes me all fuzzy inside!
Shanidy said,

I don’t mind sneak-ups. I sort of love the “chase” as much as I enjoy the yarn. If you announced, there would be ever more “stealing” out of carts! If everyone was on at once it would still be a mad house. When you are dealing with a mob there is no “great” way to handle them!
Also, I think that you are doing a great job and I can’t believe that people don’t have better things to concern them than how you run your business. If they knew how wonderful you are and how hard you worked to please us/them I think they would eat a sentence or two.
Bronwyn said,

For the comment about the loopy groupies getting advanced notice… we don’t. We get a notice when the update actually goes live, not in advance. So if you can’t get to your email (asleep, gone out, at work, etc) then you’re just as in the dark the ‘regular’ folks. it’s not like we have a date and time at which to hop on, and thusly beat you all to it.
By the way, I didn’t get anything this time either… I know a lot of the complaints just come out of ignorance, or sadness, or just plain frustration, but ultimately it’s because they ALL want your products, Sheri. I can only hope that some of these smaller dyers (those who WANT to go ‘pro’) will get enough business through you to do that!
And 2% folks… I understand your feelings, but try to remember the difference between constructive criticism and just complaining. One can help a business owner (sometimes) and one can p!ss her off.

I really don’t know what I could say that isn’t in total echoe of practically all the comments. I think that you do an absolutely wonderful job with The Loopy Ewe. There is no way anyone could ever tell that it’s only been just over a year. I’ve never had a place with customer service like yours and I am so thrilled to have found you. I love the fact that you’re in constant rotation of indie dyers so there’s always something new. Having all the same yarns always in stock is just…boring. Poor Sheri. After all that hard work to have complaints like that, must have been a final straw kind of thing. But actually, a 2% complaint rate is pretty low nowadays I think. I mean, that’s probably the same as the general population “ain’t never gonna be happy no matter what, so you might as well ignore them” rate.
Something I learned early on when I missed things because other folks g
