Almonds, Evaporated Milk, and a CONTEST!
I’ve been on a cleaning kick this week, and I have discovered some alarming things. Remember my problem with frozen chicken br**sts? (Why the stars? I don’t want to be attached to a google-search for that word…..) I have shared with you that I keep buying bags of chicken, because I’m always sure that we’re “out” at home. Well, apparently that’s not all I tend to buy without reason. This week I attacked the pantry and guess what? I found 4 cans of evaporated milk. First of all, I can’t remember the last time I used evaporated milk. And secondly, the only thing I think I use it for is mashed potatoes and fudge, neither of which has been made in this house for a long time. So – weird. The next thing I discovered “en masse” was almonds. Seven bags of them, all unopened. At least I had the good sense to buy different types. There were whole almonds, there were slivered almonds, and there were sliced almonds. I’m good. I think that I had intended to make a few batches of this incredible recipe and couldn’t remember what kind of almonds it called for. But I know that I didn’t buy these packages all at once – they accumulated. I know this because they were all in different spots in the pantry. FPS.
Just so you don’t think my problem is limited to food, I also cleaned out my closet this week. (I took Monday off – remember? I got a LOT done.) I actually sorted my shirts by color (I know. Too much.) and guess what I found out? I have a problem with white shirts. You wouldn’t believe how many white shirts are in my closet. Now in my defense, this is a completely different situation than four cans of evaporated milk. None of these shirts are exactly alike. There are different fabrics, different necklines, different sleeve lengths, and different styles. But still. I don’t think that on the days that I’m going to wear a white shirt, I need to have that many choices to face in the morning. FPS.
So, here is where the contest comes in. I want to know that I am not alone in this lunacy. Surely there are some of you out there who have an overabundance of something in your freezer/fridge/pantry/closet, that you never intended to have in abundance. Please tell me I’m not alone in this. And yarn doesn’t count because there is no recognized word in a knitter’s language that translates to “excess” or “overabundance”. Fortunately. Leave your answer in the comments section, and I will draw a name next Friday, February 1st, for the winner. What does the winner get? A skein of Wollmeise Sock Yarn.
I thought that would be a good way to start out our monthly blog contests for 2008. And for those of you who don’t have this little problem? You can still enter the contest. Just leave a comment and say, “I don’t seem to have that problem.” and consider yourself entered. I will try to contain my jealousy.
Speaking of contest winners, thank you to everyone who cast votes for the Q4 Challenge this week! There were actually several entries that ran neck and neck with a lot of votes, but the one that got the most votes was the Anemoi-Inspired Mittens, done by Nicole. So Nicole gets the Knitters Choice Award – a $25 Loopy Gift Certificate. And the randomly drawn winner from all of the entries was the Monkey Socks by Karen! Karen also gets a $25 Loopy Gift Certificate. It’s always so fun to see the different interpretations you all come up with for the Quarterly Knitting Challenges. You still have over 2 months left to participate in the Q1-08 – I hope you’ll join us!
Monday we will start a new, regular blog feature called The Loopy Limelight! We have so many fun and interesting people who have become part of the Loopy Family (and that includes all of you) and I thought it would be nice to introduce you to some of them. Monday, I will introduce you to a longtime friend of mine, who has a wonderful recipe (it contains chocolate – yum!) that she is going to share. We’re looking forward to sharing many more people with you in the weeks and months to come, usually on Mondays. We hope this brings some fun recipes and tips and inspiration for all of you.

chicken almondine, maybe?
i have a problem with black shirts. i’ll see one and think “oh i can use that, my one like it at home is faded/has stains/has disappeared into the abyss that is my laundry room . . . ” and then when i bring it home, it joins the collection of the others and the one its meant to replace, well, never gets all the way out.
at least i’m never at a loss for something to wear when the baby uses my shirt for a burp cloth/tissue/teething toy!

Strangely enough for me, it’s index cards. I love to use them for notes, but I don’t use them THAT often. One day I cleaned and found 20 packs of 100 cards each. Mostly they were white lined, but I had about three packs each of multi colored and blank. The real kicker is that I still get an urge to buy them, even though I know I have about 18 packs sitting in my closet at home.
It also happens with bags, but I figure they count about as much as knitting does.

Black purses…I can’t believe the size and variety that I have…I’m trying to train myself to check the closet and the dresser before I buy another one!
And one way to use those almonds and evaporated milk, I’d make seven layer cookies.
Have a good weekend!

Boy, do I have that problem?! I buy chocolate milk in sets of two, but I seem to do it tree times a week. It’s the same with potato bread! And I also seem to hoard unsalted butter, you know, in case I need to frost a wedding cake. Incidentally, I don’t keep enough confectioners’ sugar on hand to make that possible. I’ll stop now. I don’t want to know the full extent of my insanity!

Can you say “baking chips”?? I’m not even sure what I thought I was going to bake, but in my recent pantry cleaning I discovered enough baking chips to circle the earth several times. I had milk chocolate chips, dark chips, mint chips, raspberry chips (I didn’t even know they made this kind!), butterscotch, toffee, and several other kinds that I don’t recall at the moment. All tucked away in different little corners of pantry world. I think I might mix them all together and create a humongous batch of Everything Cookies…

I seem to buy instant soups like there’s no tomorrow and I keep thinking I’ll eat them at work but I never seem to bring them WITH me to work so I can make them. So Soup at Hand and Cup of Noodles are taking up too much space in my cabinets.

My problem has to do with fabric (I know, I know, you can never have to much, etc). A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to make a bed-sized Log Cabin quilt, but I only wanted to use blue prints that were “christmas” like (snowflakes, holly branches, etc). So every time I walked into a quilt shop, I’d look for blue fabrics that fit the category, and buy a half yard of everything that fit. This started 4 years ago.
At last count, I have 35 yards of blue, christmas-y fabric. I also have 7 yards of a gorgeous WoC snowflake print to use for the other sides of the log cabin. How far am I on this project? You guessed it – I have the fabric. Enough, by my calculations, to make 4 queen sized log cabin quilts (with skinny 1″ finished rails even!).
I also started to collect cream/beige prints for my fabric stash as well. I was up to 30 yards, but I managed to cut that down making a neutral stars on white king sized quilt for a friend. If you don’t think this is a problem, please consider for a moment that all of my fabric is bought in Local Quilt Shops, and rarely on sale. The average price per yard is $8.50.

I had to laugh at the evaporated milk because I do that too! I tend to buy too much bread because I always think we are out.
Oh and I sort my shirts by color too – black is the color I have too much of.

I was searching for a particular spice in my spice cupboard over the Holidays and found 2 large containers and also a bag of cinnamon. Same thing – I bought one “just in case” I didn’t have one at home. I hope it doesn’t go bad, as it’s going to take A LOT of baking to use it all up! I don’t seem to have a problem with clothes though, but I do tend to get black or white t-shirts as they’re more versitile (safer)than particular colors.
Well glad to hear at least some one got things organized. I have a pile of papers that need to be filed away, but the stack continues to grow.
Can’t wait to view the new Blog feature next week. Till then, I’ll just keep knitting away. Too cold to go outside, but there’s a warm up this weekend – 30’s!! Enough of this below zero “stuff”.
Have a Good Weekend!

I currently own 17 cans of Cream of Chicken soup. I have no idea why and I have no idea what I actually use it for, the occasional pot of Chicken and Dumplins and Chicken Pot Pie, I guess. We moved here 2 months ago and one of the first boxes I opened had 9 cans of Cream of Chicken soup and since then I have always picked up a couple cans of Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom whenever I go to the store. I have no idea why, just tradition, I guess. This is a very scary truth to learn about ones self. But I at least I finally have a legacy to leave to my children

I’m a big-time couponer. I’ve been doing it for over 20 years, so I’m pretty good at it. I always buy items in abundance when I can get them practically free. Pratically free is a stock-up price! The item I have an overabundance of right now is deodorant–I have 20, but then again I got all of them either free or for less than 25 cents. Using coupons makes it possible for me to shop at The Loopy Ewe!

Oh and I forgot to mention – we were discussing what to do with cans of Eagle Brand milk (condensed, not sure if that is different from what you have) yesterday at my knitting group. Apparently, you can immerse the UNOPENED cans in boiling water on the stovetop for about 20 minutes to make dulce de leche. You boil the cans and then let them cool THOROUGHLY WITHOUT OPENING. Once cooled, you can open the can up and pour it into a graham cracker crust , then chill for a really yummy pie. Maybe you could sprinkle slivered almonds on top and finish with whipped cream? I guess this is a really old-style cooking trick that houseiwves used to use – do 4 cans at a time, and keep the spares in the fridge, so that you always have something ready for company!

Before I even got to the “contest” aspect of this, I was thinking, WHAT A RELIEF! I’m not the only person who does this! I seem to go through “phases” where I over buy something like that. Just the other night I was on the phone with my mom and I was looking in the cupboards for something to cook, and I was commenting to her about how many cans of tunafish I have. I don’t know WHY. I rarely eat the stuff! But just lately every time I go to the store, I seem to think we’re out so I buy more! Prior to that, I actually did it with SALT of all things. I now have 3 unopened containers of salt in my baking cupboard. I know I’ve done it in the past with spaghetti noodles and paper towels too. I’m just so relieved to know I’m not the only one who does this…

I used to have this problem with tea. I’d get some every time it went on sale – different kinds most times, luckily. I must have thought I was using it more quickly than I was, because I somehow ended up with more than four boxes after it was rearranged to take up as little space as possible (and I’m a student with limited storage space, so that’s a significant amount for me). Then I completely stopped buying tea. I’m going to have to start again soon.
Also, socks. I don’t buy socks for myself, but I do knit them. I don’t have a problem with that, because each pair of socks I knit is special in its own way (at least to me). It’s the socks I’m given that have built up to ridiculous levels, because I don’t ever remember to throw them away. I should get rid of the rattiest ones at least.

I don’t have this problem, yet. I’m convinced the only reason I have yet to experience this is only because I’m still in college, and live at home where most of the grocery shopping is done by my mother. I generally find that when I go out to go shopping, I happily go about my day trying things on, and just as I’m about to go to the checkout counter, I remember – I have that in my closet already. This happens A LOT, so I’m sure its only a matter of time before I start buying these things rather than putting them back. Though, I don’t think it reflects badly on you. We all have memory issues – I know I rarely can remember where I put something I just had in my hands not a minute earlier, and I’m 21! At least you know that your tastes in clothing are consistent. It would be bad, I think, if you looked in your closet and saw 15 things you have never worn or would never wear again.
Come to think of it, that is my problem. I’m incapable of letting go, I attach special meaning to clothes, even though I know they are never going to be worn again. I have this problem with t-shirts – I don’t wear them anymore, but I continue to buy them, at concerts and schools and Urban Outfitters. But at heart, I love argyle and cardigans and I know that my sense of style has changed. And I usually keep them around for a few months before coming to my senses and clean out my closet. So, a similar problem, but not exactly the same thing.

Last week I noticed I have 6 jars of sweet pickle relish in my pantry. The only person who eats relish is my husband, and the only thing he eats them on is hot dogs, which I only cook once a month, if not less. I think what happens, is EVERYTIME I go to the store to buy hot dogs, I think “Oh man, am I out of relish? I better get some” and then I get home and look in the fridge and there is always half a jar, so I toss the jar I just bought into the pantry. Why I cannot remember that I already have 897897324 jars of relish in the pantry everytime I buy hot dogs, I don’t know. I’m only 28 years old, aren’t I a little young to be having such memory problems?!

Great timing! I discovered this weekend while pouring through the cabinets looking for cinnamon…that I have 7, yes SEVEN, of the Mccormick black pepper grinders. No cinnamon, but SEVEN black pepper grinders. And I don’t even USE that much pepper. I can’t even imagine how I came up with that many.
Also, not in MY pantry…but I cleaned out my mom’s pantry two christmas’s ago when I was home for the holidays. My mom has more ziploc bags, plastic utensils, and plastic cups that a normal family of 4 could possible use in a year. And she lives alone!!! I ended up consolidating them best as I could and hung a reminder note in the pantry and on the door to the garage that said “Under NO circumstances are you to buy: ” and then listed the stuff out. It was crazy! And now over a year later…she’s barely made a dent in it all!

It’s tea for me. I seem to go through phases where the IDEA of a cozy cup of hot tea is appealing and so I buy some tea and then….I don’t know, I guess the weather warms up. I cleaned out my cupboard and was startled to discover about 20 various bags and boxes of tea – loose, bag, caf, decaf, herbal, medicinal, flavored – you name it. I’m trying to work my way through it because if I can drink up most of the tea, then I’ll get about half a cupboard back

I love to make chocolate chip cookies and I’ll go to the grocery store intending to just do normal shopping and say “Oh I don’t think I have any chocolate chips” and get some. Twice a year my husband makes tamales. In the dough he uses shortening. Shopping for the tamale making happens days in advance. Apparently he shops for the tamales, but does not always cook them right away. That gives him time to forget that he had already purchased everything. Last month I cleaned out the pantry and found 14 sticks of shortenting. 14! Not only will we never be able to use it all before it expires, but I am pretty sure he will drag more home next time. “Just in case.”

Well, I think that I have a problem buying toilet paper. Every time I make a “Walmart Trip” I buy a few packages (packs of 4). It is just me and my husband so we don’t need all that much in storage. The last shopping trip when the hubby was helping put the stuff away he asked me if we really needed 5 more pkgs of TP.

I can’t believe I won…now I will have to decide what to get with my gift certificate!!! My husband asked me just this week why I bought more corn meal when I had an unopened container in the pantry… well the plastic container I keep the cornmeal in was empty so I thought I needed some. He also asked why I had so much chicken in the freezer and never seemed to cook it (he hates chicken by the way). We also seem to have an abundance of canned tomato products (I must have been thinking about making homemade spaghetti sauce). You are not alone in your mass quantity purchases.

I have a problem with cans of coconut milk. I think I have at least five right now, huddling on different shelves of the pantry. Most are low fat, but at least one regular sneaked home with me. I should group them together for company
Can’t help you use up the evaporated milk, but get some mild curry powder, a can of coconut milk (I can help you with that!), and an onion, and you can make a good curry with the chicken and almonds (brown the meat with the onion, dump in the coconut milk, almonds, and some curry powder, add carrots or green beans or some other vegetable, simmer 20 minutes or so while the rice cooks, and serve with almonds for garnish).
Penzey’s in Maplewood has excellent curry powder, and the English aisle of Global Foods has Sharwoods curry powder in mild, medium, and thermonuclear. Both are excellent. I recommend Penzeys if you cook at all, they have five different kinds of cinnamon and spices and blends you’ve never even heard of.

I don’t have the problem with food, but in the closet, it’s black pants. Different lengths for different shoes, different weights of fabric for different seasons, different shades of black, dressy black, casual black, etc. The good thing is that I’m one of those crazy people who love organizing, so I clean my closet regularly, and am often enlisted by my friends to clean their closets!
As far as the almonds go, I had an incredible salad last weekend that a friend made – just spinach, mixed greens, strawberries, and poppyseed dressing, but she added glazed almonds – it was fabulous!

As for food or condiments, I have 5 bottles of ketchup and 4 bottles of mustard. I don’t know why but everytime I go to the store it seems like I am always buying a bottle of ketchup. I do this with tea (as well as other things). I keep buying tea because I think we must almost be out or that a “new” flavor would be good to have. And now I have a pullout drawer in my pantry cabinet that is FULL of tea. I could hold a lot of tea parties and never run out of tea! In my closet it would be shoes and especially purses. I think I am on a quest to find the perfect purse. The problem is that I don’t get rid of the not so perfect ones…beause they never get ratty. Only the almost perfect and perfect ones wear out.

Butter. Unsalted. And red wine.
I’ve gotten better at not doing this last-minute buying. I make a list at home and then stick to it. And when I wonder if I have something but I can’t really remember? I don’t buy it. This wonderful change came about because of a period of unemployment, when I couldn’t afford to spend any extra.

I have two problems! The first is tea – I can’t go to the grocery store without scouring the tea section, and always leave with AT LEAST one box, usually more. Now don’t get me wrong, I love tea, but at most I drink two cups a day. I have a cabinet devoted to my tea! It reminds me, in some ways, of my yarn obsession!
I also, unintentionally, seem to be hoarding Bush’s baked beans. My grocery store had them in a bin at the end of the aisle for $1.00, and I guess I got into the habit of buying them. Not long ago I cleaned my pantry closet, and discovered I had TEN cans of beans!!! Now, my daughter and husband like them, but I really don’t serve them very often. I expect they will last me well into the summer.
By the way, I had 3 cans of evaporated milk – don’t even remember buying them, and have no idea what I will use them for!

I am terrible at remembering what we have and what we don’t. I can’t tell you how many times I end up with books (knitting books or leaflets, children’s books, whatever) in duplicate, triplicate, or quadrupal form. I also get in my mind we are almost out of something, but can’t seem to remember I’ve restocked. That might explain the 3 cases of chicken broth in the pantry or the 4 jars of ginger in the spice cabinet. Now, I know you said yarn doesn’t count, but the LYS gets a kick out of the times I come in and buy the same yarn in the same color 2 or 3 times in a row.

I have your same affliction! I have gotten better but I recently did an inventory of the dried herbs and spices in the pantry. Tell me…. Does ANYONE need four cans of ground cloves? I think not. And three containers of sesame seeds is also unnecessary!

Brown sugar (four boxes I can think of), and unsalted butter (three 4-stick packages in the freezer). Now, if I just had the chocolate chip problem some of the other folks have, I’d be in business. I could make cookies for an army.
On the wardrobe front – khaki pants. Six (maybe seven)different pairs in slightly different shades and styles to make up different outfits.

Black slacks and jeans. I have no less than 25 pairs of black bottoms. I only wear 4-5 of them. I also have 5 white tanks and 4 black tanks. I do better with those and seem to wear 2 of them often and rotate the others when I ‘find’ them.
I buy the mini-cans of evaporated milk in case of an emergency. I found 3 cans hidden at the back of my pantry a week ago. I also found 3 cans of great northern beans. I’m sure I bought them with a recipe in mind but apparently I never made whatever it was! lol
That’s all I can think of right now. You are NOT alone!

You are not alone! I have done this with several grocery items over the past few years. Currently we have 5 containers of Mortons table salt! We use maybe one every 6-8 months if that. I kept buying more of it though for some reason. I have also done this with cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup and for some reason I seem to have a lifetime supply of sweetened condensed milk. I will never use it before the expiration date so I am going to put most of it in a box and drop it off at the local food pantry.

You are sooooo not alone in this, Sheri. My pantry sees the same thing happen with flour, sugar, and choc chips. Oddly enough….the ingredients for homemade choc chip cookies. This happens because I want to always have the “stuff” to make cookies whenever the whim strikes me
And forgetting I have already restocked said items…I will restock them again. Fortunately for my house the discovery of this usually leads to massive cookie baking to use up some of the “stuff”.

I, too, have been on a mild cleaning kick, but this weekend I’m taking a little break for some “me” time – even though the original plan was to clean out 3 specific areas of my small apartment.
I don’t seem to have an overabundance of one particular thing, just lots of stuff in general. I’m very sentimental. I do however, need to clean out my closets – and I will be color coding my shirts, sweaters, jackets, pants, etc. You are not alone in this. I have a very specific system I use, but every now and then, things get crazy and I don’t stick to it. So, I start all over when I want to also donate clothing that I will no longer wear for whatever reason. Once this complete overhaul of cleaning is complete (hopefully by end of May as I want to move to a different apartment), I’ll be completely organized and not let it get out of control again! We’ll see how that goes, lol… : )

I’m fairly certain the cranberry sauce was the result of too many folks making trips to the store at Thanksgiving, but the tomato paste… I have no idea why I have so much of that. And..all of these pens are good pens…the junk ones have been donated to my post office. Sigh……………on to tissue paper! I must have at least 500 sheets of tissue paper. I have gallons of it right now, but only because I needed it a week or so ago, thought I had gallons, but had none. I also have a problem with kitchen garbage bags. I either have 700 of them or I’m totally out…just when I don’t need to be. My daughter just thinks it’s unbelievable that I just cannot keep tabs on this stuff, but wait til she has to keep her own groceries. I’m sure this is an inherited trait.

Pens…I have a huge thing with pens. I love them, can’t get enough. I’m not allowed in Office Supply stores because I would buy them out.
Another big one…Chocolate chips. Full bags, half bags, semi-sweet, milk chocolate. The list is endless. I think there are 6 or 7 full bags in the cupboard right now. I go grocery shopping every two weeks, and I always throw a bag of chocolate chips in the cart, like I’m buying milk or something that actually gets used. I also have 4 cans of pumpkin pie mix even though I stopped using the can stuff 5 years ago. Wonder why I bought them?

As for the kitchen, pasta and spaghetti sauce. I have 18 jars and more boxes than I care to admit. I’m not sure what it is. Flash back to when I had no money? I always pick up some when I’m at the store – and I really don’t eat a lot of pasta anymore.

Right now, I have 6, none of which are the “new” ones. The six are leftovers from previous winters. I have them in my purse, car, top of the microwave, bathroom closet, nightstand. I think I put my comment in the wrong place so here goes again. We have developed a routine of items we always use and therefore buy, whether we really need them or not. The biggest stash is canned chicken broth, vegetable broth when I can find it and then beef broth. The second biggest row in the pantry is the cream of xxx soups, mostly cream of chicken. We don’t even use them often, guess we just want to have one handy if/when we do need it. Then come the canned beans of all sorts- various seasoned and unseasoned black beans, garbanzos, pintos, light and dark kidney, butter beans, navy, cannellini – any that are available.

I can’t believe some of you have “extra” bags of chocolate chips. That is just wrong. You can send some to me if you need space in your pantry. For me it is rice. I never think I have any rice and I always do. And trash bags. I found 3 boxes of them the other day, in various stages of open-ness. I have been making a concerted effort over the last year (and renewed my efforts over the last month) to actually use things all the way up before I buy more. It is really interesting to see how long I can go between “I think I need more ______” and actually being out of it.

Oh yes, I do in fact have an abundance of something in my spice cupboard. And there is a story. I have probably 8 or more jars of cumin.
Here’s the thing, I am not a cook. But I go on these binges where I think I should cook, so I look at a lot of recipes. Since I love Mexican food, I look at a lot of those recipes in particular. And they seem to always call for cumin.
So then I will go to the store (sans list, of course). I will see the spice aisle and I will think to myself, “Cumin! Recipes need cumin, and I don’t have any cumin!” So I buy some. Lather, rinse, repeat every couple of trips to the store.

Mom was always afraid she’d run out of something and kept things really stocked up. We had an entire separate freezer full of frozen foods and half a cow. She bought the large 5 gallon milk container, the one with a spigot on the bottom. I have definitely inherited that “can’t run out” paranoia from her. This year what I bought too much of was walnuts but it’s always something. When I got into scrapbooking I bought far too many sheets (3 in every color) of sticky letters only to realize later that I like the eensy ones much better. Hubby knows well that anytime you use the backup item to refill the container (brown sugar for example) you must immediately put that item on the list even though we aren’t yet technically out. Costco/BJs/Sam’sClub is my mecca.

Even with an extra pantry, we’ve had to resort to “alternative” storage. I can’t resist the school supply sales. Fresh spiral notebooks for 10 cents! Never mind that my kids only use one or two a year. I still buy a dozen every year. Then when we move I give them away.
We’ll be moving in 5 months and I’m sure I’ll find more of these types of things.
And even though you cannot have an excess of yarn, you can buy the same thing twice or for some reason buy all green yarn for months and month until stash looks like Oscar the Grouch is hiding in it.

Evaporated milk: Mashed-Potato Fudge!!! (how gross doesn *that* sound?!?) Actually, the only things I use it for are those two things, and pumpkin pie.
Almonds: Make your own almond butter. Toast ‘em up, throw ‘em in the food processor. Almond butter is the most wonderful stuff……….
Chicken breasts: grilled on top of a spinach or Caesar salad.
All together: I’m sure there’s some casserole you could make using the evaporated milk for the cream sauce and almonds on top…..

Oh…and cheese…those little bags of shredded and sliced cheeses…I can hardly cram them in the cheese bin in the frig when I get home.
I have alot of fabric and especially fleece – I don’t sew alot anymore since I started knitting, so it stays tucked away in totes for “someday”…
I seem to have a sock fetish. I knit them and buy them at the store if they have cute designs on them.
…and since I started knitting, I have way too much dust around the house that I don’t seem to see anymore.

I counted 20 pairs of black shoes in my closet, and honestly I only wear about 3 of them with any regularity. Hmm… No wonder I can never find brown shoes to wear – there’s no room!
We usually joke about tomato paste, because my MIL used to always buy a tin of it when she went shopping because she was afraid she didn’t have any. So she would end up with over 10 tins of it at any one time. I just found 4 containers of corn meal in our pantry – I didn’t even know we had that many! One is white corn meal, but still – it’s not like we make cornbread that often. I think a purge might be in order this weekend. Thanks for the fun contest!

Lip Balm. Yep – everywhere you look there is lip balm! It used to be something I lost all the time when I just had one or two. So, to combat this problem, I bought more! And more. And more. I have no idea how many there are, but I think there are six in my desk drawer at home, one here at work, two in my backpack/purse, three in my bathroom cabinet and one by my bed. And that’s not counting the ones that I’ve bought for my husband (at least 5 more). Plus lotion seems to be multiplying at an absurd rate these days. I will eventually go through this stuff as I live in a very dry climate…but still!
I also just noticed three bags of frozen peas in the freezer the other day. This is my husband. I hate peas, and we rarely use them!

I’m on a bowl diet, per my husband. There’s a rule in our house–”a bowl comes in, then a bowl must leave.” We have too many as it is.
I don’t know HOW we ended up this many of the things. I’d never run into anything like it before–too many bowls. But here we are.

I see my affliction has already been mentioned, so I don’t feel so bad. It’s lip balm. I MUST have one handy wherever I go. I have one in every purse I own, one (or two) at my desk, in my nightstand, on the table beside my knitting chair, just about everywhere I can think of. Even so, I am constantly grabbing more when I’m in the drug store or grocery. At the rate I use them, they do go quickly, so I just keep buying more! I even seem to be passing it on to my daughters. Don’t you know that when I filled their Christmas stockings I just had to throw in a lip balm or three!
And to all you chocolate chip hoarders, I’m in awe. An open bag of chocolate chips wouldn’t last a day in my house. Man, you guys have willpower!

I definitely have this problem! for me, it’s black beans. Black bean burritos are a favorite dish of mine, and somehow every time I’m in the store, I’m convinced that I used up the last can and need to get more. At this moment, we have 6 cans of black beans. Enough for several weeks worth of black bean burritos. But I’m guessing it won’t be long until I bring home another can!

My problem begins with the fact that I buy groceries in twos!! Two of everything!! It looks like I am shopping for a friend.
I happen to have much too much of the following… but the trick is that the stuff is somewhere in the house, it’s just that my precious three children feel the need to use/move/take it…
Lip balm
pens
pencils
note pads
The stuff that I just buy too much of because I think we are running out…
Pickles
ketchup
mustard
feminine products
The stuff we run out of because I *forget* that we need to replenish…
facial tissues
napkins
TP…. or maybe it’s those kids….

For my DH and me, it’s corn (creamed & regular) and Jiffy corn meal for a family recipe for “scalloped corn” casserole. Whenever any of these items is on sale, we stock up. Not that this recipe is a weekly deal, of course. We try to moderate ourselves! But we always have at least 4 or more boxes of the Jiffy corn muffin mix on hand, and enough corn to go with it. That, and cans of mushrooms, nearly deserve their own shelf in our pantry!

I have that problem with lots of stuff.
T-shirts. The kind with sayings on them and just plain ones too. I could wear a clean t-shirt for every meal and still not have to do laundry for more than a week. The one’s with sayings I buy cause they tickle my funny bone but I don’t actually wear them that often. I’ve been trying to winnow down but I just found http://www.craftygear.com/ thanks to Lime-n-Violet and I think I’m about to make my problem soooo much worse. The ones without sayings are usually from me trying to match something I don’t have with me and so buying it in case it’s right (almost always this is at Target so it’s not like I’m spending that much) but then it doesn’t go with what I hoped it would. But it’s pretty so I don’t take it back… I have currently 3 different shades/styles of teal long sleeve t-shirt. I did clear out some though so I have a more reasonable number of shirts without sayings than I do with sayings.
Then there’s blank books/journals I seem to buy them much faster than I use them up. Again with the pretty or otherwise tempting.
Tea I keep a stash of. Not as big as my yarn or fiber stashes, but what I need. I mean, you need your morning tea, and then your afternoon tea, and your tea “strong enough to trot a mouse on” for when you really need to wake up, and your herbal teas for visitors, and decaf tea to keep the hubby from sleepwalking…
Food, I’ve finally managed to stop doing the overbuy thing. But I had to organize my pantry and then be ruthless about only shopping from the list if I wasn’t 100% certain I had used the last of something. I stll have 6 jars of Soy Vey sauce from before the great rule lockdown but that was on purpose. They were on sale and we were using them really fast. So i bought 6, and (naturally) for some reason we immediately stopped using that sauce. LOL The other thing I always end up with too much of is canned pumpkin. I buy it to make pumpkin apple bundt bread and then don’t make it. And then hubby wants pumpkin pie so he buys it or gets me to because I’ve forgotten I have some and then I don’t get around to making the pie and neither does he. Or like this year, someone offers to bring the pumpkin pie to the holiday meal. Either way I end up with pumpkin. And evaporated milk since hubby buys that too. I have a good recipe that uses condensed milk but not evaporated. Sorry.

Well, my husband says I have that problem with buying black shoes, but of course that’s not a problem at all. Right?
The real problem in my house is salsa.
It always seems to be on the grocery list, so we buy a jar (or two if it’s on sale or we have a coupon), only to find a whole colony of them scattered around the pantry.
I think it’s because when I put the groceries away, I stack the salsa next to the chips; when my husband puts the salsa away, he stacks them next to the canned vegetables. And whoever makes the grocery list that week only checks the place they put the salsa…

For us, it’s PASTA.
We don’t even eat all that much pasta (I love it, hubby notsomuch). So, anytime we have a recipe for it, it is put on the grocery list, neither one of us checks to see if we have it, and we end up in the pasta aisle thinking: “Well, it’s cheap and I don’t want to go out if we DON’T have it, so let’s just by a box.”
We have bowties, Rotini, every shape you can imagine. Spaghetti. Angel hair. Linguine. An ENTIRE SHELF in our pantry – I kid you not.
Ummm….pasta, anyone?

The irony being that I’m not suppose to really have caffeine….and my spouse isn’t so big on coffee, heh. Maybe I need professional help.
I always think we need more of those items. I’m getting better about it. I think it has to do with the fact that we have gone from an 8 person household to a 6 person household in the last couple of years. I still think I’m buying for a small army.

It’s those trips to Target that get me in trouble — kids’ toothpaste, office supplies (pens, sticky notes, notepads — all that stuff in the dollar section right up front!), liquid soap refills (4 in different parts of the house at last look), purse-sized kleenex packs (none of which are ever in my purse when I need them). I looked in the kitchen after reading your post. I found 5 jars of vanilla in the cabinet. I don’t know when I was planning to bake THAT much stuff. Perhaps if we run out of booze we can drink it.
Next to it I found 8 bottles of vinegar. There is at least a bit of variety there but do we really need 3 bottles of red wine vinegar when we usually use balsamic? (The balsamic’s low, too; must add it to the shopping list.) These two items must be my culinary equivalent of yarn, since I don’t remember buying a third of what’s in my stash, either.

I swear, if I actually cleaned house from top to bottom, I would have enough clear sheet protectors (I use them to hold all my documents in binders, it’s the only way I can keep track of anything), Sharpies, pens, index cards (I must have dozens of unopened packs, god only knows what I thought I needed them for), looseleaf paper… I mean, I understand I’ve been in college for the last four years and stuff is going to accumulate, but I have enough to run a small business for a decade, I feel. I’m laughuing out loud because i can totally relate and, natch, I have a sinilar story. Last year we had our bathrooms redone and, in preparation I boxed up the contents and organized it a little bit. I found in excess of 18 big tubes of toothpaste under the sink. I think I know how it happened. If I have a coupon AND an item is on sale then I’m compelled to buy it. That’s not where the story ends though. I made a mental note to stop buying toothpaste for them next gazillion years and, to eliminate temptation, I stopped clipping toothpaste coupons. It worked for a while but I fell off the wagon again because it turns out that most of the stash is Colgate but my daughter prefers Aquafresh and I’m a Crest girl. I think that the total in the house is up to about 21 now. I need an intervention. (or pretty Wollmeise to tempt me away from the toothpaste aisle)

There are two things I tend to over buy. First is black t-shirts. I love black t-shirts and every time I see them on sale at Target, the Gap, Old Navy, Sam’s Club (just about anywhere) I buy at least one and I often buy two. I now have more black t-shirts than will fit in my t-shirt drawer and they’re piled up on a shelf in the closet. I also tend to buy way too much of the Annie’s microwaveable single serving boxes of macaroni and cheese (the white cheddar flavor in the purple box is the best). I like to mix in a garden burger (sounds gross, but it’s delicious) for a light lunch or dinner or even a big snack. Until recently, they didn’t carry my favorite single serve mac ‘n cheese at my regular grocery store so every time I’m at Whole Foods or anywhere else that has it, I buy a box and now have have three or four of them in my pantry.

In the kitchen, there is no longer a problem since Mr. Obsessive Inventory Man started cooking and buying groceries. When I was the primary shopper, we ALWAYS had a least a dozen cans of tuna and boxes of Kraft mac n’ cheese in the pantry. (Everyone say “comfort food” in unison!) I was always sure that I was running out. Ditto on poultry seasoning – at one time I had thirteen bottles of it and I only use it at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
In my closet it appears that brown pants and brown shoes have taken over – 8 pairs of pants and twelve pairs of shoes. In the same shade of chocolate. That wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t wear BLACK four days out of five! The black overload was intentional, the brown appears to be accidental.
Isn’t it nice that we’re not alone in our habits?!

Blue t-shirts and office supplies are my downfall.
I have enough blue t-shirts to wear for over a week without doing laundry (scary!). The good news is that they are not all plain t-shirts. Most of them say something that I relate to.
The office supplies are not only pens and paper, but also the organizational stuff. For some reason, I always feel unorganized in the office and think that the organizational systems will help. I am (slowly) discovering that it is a matter of will, not the organizational system that will keep things straightened out….but Staples and Office Max are still dangerous.

I even have some in my drawers with the tags still on them and today when I was getting organized for my husbands next business trip I found a grocery bag with 2 black, a blue and a white one. I think I’ll start wearing the old and stained ones and throwing them out instead of washing them. Think of all the knitting time I’ll gain.

Seems like every other week I think “I need a vegetable that won’t spoil in the fridge after three days.” and frozen corn is always the winner. Never frozen peas or broccoli! It’s funny you mentioned this because I noticed my “stocking up” problem and make a conscious effort not to buy the things that I used to stock up on. lol So, no more purchases at Bath & Body works until I have used at least half of the bottles I already have. No more baking supplies until I run out of something. I cleaned out the shirts in my closet a few weeks back and anything that I had not worn for two years I gave to Goodwill. The only thing I seem to be stocking up on is yarn, but I’ve made a goal to knit through at least ten skeins of yarn before I buy any more. lol We’ll see how that goes.

Oh, for me it’s books. Which I mostly just have, since I don’t read nearly as much as I used to, since it cuts into knitting time (which is a bad thing. Cutting into knitting time, I mean.) But the thing is, I still buy them. A lot. Of course, now that I’m – a . um.. certain age, I no longer remember what exactly I have. So I have quite a few copies of the same books, since I forget I already have them, think they look interesting, and buy them again.

Nooooooo….I do the same with soap (I probably have a 5 year supply under the sink and love to buy more), razors, lotion, shower gel (and any other kind of toilettre), underwear, SLIPPERS (honesly – I bought multiple pairs of the same slipper when I first ordered them because I knew that I’d be sad when I wore the first pair out – four years later, I’m still on pair 1, with future pairs 2, 3, and 4 in my closet), pajamas…let’s not continue.

I buy unsalted butter for baking. My roommate used to reign me in, for which I was rather resentful. Now that I live on my own and see how much I buy without her around to say “no, we already have several pounds at home”–I kind of wish she was here to go grocery shopping with.
Yarn is a given but you said doesn’t count–and you’re right–I have all different colors, gauges, blends, etc etc.
Purple clothing also accumulates at a frightening rate. I have lots of purple sweaters, purple blouses, I have these great purple heels, several pair of purple linen pants (no wool–yet),
Oh–one final thing: Bath and Body works products. I have enough soap to last several life times and more lotion than I’ll ever be able to use. Their sales are evil on my checkbook.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – let me explain. When we were moving my grandmother to an assisted living apartment we started to clean out her standing freezer. She was barely 5′ so she never could reach the bottom of the freezer. Every year she would get apples at harvest time and make apple sauce and then freeze it. When we got to the bottom of the freezer – 25 large green garbage bags later – we found so many Tupperware containers of apple sauce so old the acids in the fruit had started to deteriorate the plastic.
Now my father could open a hardware store from the trunk of one of the cars, never mind the other car or the 2-car garage that we can get a car in or the outside shed.
Now to the third generation – see what I mean about that ole apple – I love gadgets – scissors, knitting needles, tape measure, not to mention knitting bags of every size, shape, color – and then Italian leather handbags and wallets. Since I don’t have any children maybe this will stop with me but on the other hand my brother had 3 children – maybe we’re starting another orchard in CO?
So see Sheri you have lots of company.

As far as stuff I actually shell out money for — well, yarn’s about it
. (Though I used to do it with cross-stitch patterns, Mill Hill beads, fabric, underpants, and store-bought socks.)
I do, however, compulsively take home the bars of soap that I used in the hotel room (because after all, they’re just going to throw those away). I only go on business trips about once or twice a year, and I still have enough hotel soap to last me the next ten years. (Though once my son reaches the age where twice-daily bathing is highly desirable, it’ll go faster!) I can’t remember when I last bought a bar of soap in a store. (And then there’s the soaps from the time I tried out soap molding; those get used up a little faster, but not much!)

I have two, one that’s not to bad and the other that if fairly embarasssing.
1. I have an over abundance of highlighters – all different colours and sizes and shapes – I don’t know why as I never really use them but for some reason I cannot stop buying them.
2. I have actually bought the exact same pair of shoes on three seperate occasions. I needed a new pair of black loafers so I went out and bought a rather expensive pair (Bally) that I fell in love with, put them in the closet and forgot about them – never wore them. A few months later I went out and bought the exact same pair and put them in the closet. While shopping with my mother I made the comment that I needed a new pair of loafers, and yes I bought the same pair this time on sale. When I finally discovered my error my mother had a really good laugh, as time had passed the only pair I could take back was the ones I had bought on sale.
I am notorious for doing things like this, I have also done it with coats.
Which one do you think is the embarassing one?

I seem to have the same problem with evaporated milk. Every time I think about pumpkin pie I buy a can, I think that I am up to 4 cans or so. I guess I need to start baking that pumpkin pie!!
Black clothing would probably be my other vice. Black is so easy to wear, but I must have a stack of black sweatersl, some who knows how old. It might be time to do another trip to the mission
Now if I I could just get my FI to get rid of stuff our house would be a lot less cluttered…Ugh..baby steps..

I have several “issues.” Food related – chicken broth and frozen vegetables. I think I’m going to make soup and I don’t and then the next time I think I’m going to make soup I buy them again…
Clothes – Black pants – I can think of 6 pairs that I wear and three are almost identical, black shirts or sweaters, and white shirts, especially tee shirts. Then there are the black shoes… Sounds like a uniform, but it’s not and I love color!
Jane said,

This is too funny! And reading through the other comments refreshed my memory about some of my past “issues”. Thanks alot people!
Things that used to be a problem… Tea and lipstick. Don’t you just love all those pretty lipstick colors?
Current issues include:
Paper – drawing paper, sketch paper, water color paper, notebooks, journals, etc
Pens – fountain pens mostly, but also Sharpies and interesting things from the office supply store and the craft store
Ink – every color and type to go with the fountain pens… don’t you just love all those colors?
Crayons, colored pencils, and coloring books. mmmm…. colors… collect the whole set!
Post-it notes – these are stashed all over and I find them in the most unlikely places
Red things for the kitchen – gadgets, dishes, baking pans, appliances, towels
My DB has issues with scissors and measuring devices – steel tapes, calipers, micrometers. The micrometers are quite handy when you aren’t sure what size that needle is that you found underneath the chair.
We won’t talk about the books… they are like the yarn – there is no word for “excess” in this area.

How funny!
I recently cleaned out the pantry, and found two cans of evaporated milk…. one with a “best used by” date of 9/2005!
But, I have something larger than finding two extra cans of evaporated milk (or even 7 bags of almonds!)…… the last time I came home with a bulk package of paper towels (you know the kind with 10 rolls in them?) I found 3 bulk packages already stacked in the basement (and yes, I bought those!). It’s a paper towel party!
I just placed my third order with Loopy Ewe (Susan was so helpful on the phone!), I’ll make it to a groupy one of these days, I’m sure.

Oh well, I have my “ratty in the lab” jeans and the “night out on the town” jeans (which my husband says he doesn’t see a real difference, but hey… my jeans, my rules).
Oh… and stationery… haven’t written a real letter in ages now, and yet I have more paper than I care to admit. Better start writing my thank you notes on it, since I go through the note cards much faster.

Have you heard of Rita Rutner? If so, you’ll get the references:
I have mayonnaise, kool-aid, tea, mustard, peanut butter and parmesan cheese ‘alzheimers’.
1. I’ve finally convinced myself to stop buying mayo (and miracle whip) after I unearthed 3 large unopened jars in the cupboard. I even called a friend of mine from the store to ask her if SHE needed mayo and she yelled at me! LOL
2. I have enough kool-aid to hydrate several kindergarten classes for a few years
3. I went looking for hot chocolate last week when it was 5F and discovered I have every flavor of black tea ever made, and several herbals as well. No hot chocolate, tho!
4. The same day I found the mayo, I found 3 unopened squeeze bottles of yellow mustard – and I don’t even LIKE mustard. I only ever use it when I make deviled eggs!
5. I do like peanut butter, but I don’t need 5 jars of creamy or crunchy!
6. I love Italian food, and cook pasta and other dishes quite a bit. I do not need 5 containers of grated parm, tho.
Did I mention I live alone? Deviled eggs and lasagna at my house! Or maybe just a tea party – I have the tea, someone can bring the cookies.

And angel hair pasta. This is really crazy, because I don’t cook. But I found three boxes of the stuff the last time I cleaned out my kitchen cupboard.

Also and this is completely deliberate, I buy copies of the same book if it has different cover art that I like. There are some Anne McCaffrey books that I have 2,3,4 copies of, all with different covers.

There are two items that I seem to have a collection of:
The first one is because I’m convinced they’ll suddenly be hard to find and I LOVE THEM. Ener-G Crisp Pretzels. They used to be hard to find and I had to go to health food stores to get them if I didn’t want to order online. So I’d buy a few bags every time I found them. Then my local big grocery store started stocking them. I ate a bag every day for a week and then was cleaning the kitchen in anticipation of clearing it for renovation last week and found NINE BAGS and that didn’t include the three I bought that morning convinced that I had maybe a bag left
The other is LARGE containers of ground black pepper (not the little small square box but the big plastic thing full of spice). I generally use a pepper mill so I have yet to explain 3 containers (all open but barely used) of already ground black pepper.

I grew up with my grandparents & my grandmother was a big time shopper/shopaholic. When I cleaned out their house, I found enough bars of Ivory Soap to fill an entire grocery store paper bag … that’s alot of bars of soap. There were so many cans of Maxwell House Coffee & boxes & boxes of cereal (many with expiration dates year’s prior).
Myself, as I get older, I find that I have more of the stock-up mentality. My grandmother did it because of suffering through the depression, I do it for convenience. It’s easier to have items on hand.
Clothingwise I have about 8 pink turtlenecks, but that’s OK, they all have different purposes and they each get worn frequently.

Here it’s chocolate. My daughter in Portland had a chance to get half-price Guittard chocolate–chocolate chunks, chocolate chips, big chocolate chips, dark chocolate wheels–everything had to be ordered in 10-lb lots. DD was able to talk her sister, SIL, and SIL’s sister into getting some of the chocolate. Guess what. I had to buy whatever was left over from all of the 10-lb lots so that this would be a bargain for the girls. And I am trying to lose weight and reduce my insulin level due to potentially serious health problems, so I can’t eat any of it. DH won’t eat chocolate because he thinks the oxylates in it will cause kidney stones. I think there are at least 20 lbs of chocolate downstairs that I just pretend are not there.

There was also one extremely memorable episode when I overbought on peanut butter and Choc-hazelnut spread, to the point where even though I have two Self Propelled Sandwich-Eating Machines in my house, I had 10+ jars of EACH in the pantry.
Strangely, I never seem to have a backlog of coffee. Go figure.

I seem to accidentally pick up multiple copies of the same book, usually from the used book store. This can mean I get the book, read it, sell it back to the used bookstore, then get the book from the used bookstore. Why? I have no idea. It has only occurred a handful of times but as you’d say, “FPS!”
My mom keeps on buying Wasabi (Japanese horseradish) so we have about four tubes in the ‘fridge at any given time. There’s also a small issue with sponges from Costco taking over the pantry. I doubt we’ll need 40 sponges (2/3 packs) for the foreseeable future.
Pens and paper goods are like yarn, there is never enough. Same with tea (unless it goes stale before I can drink it)

The other thing in my house that there is an overabundance of (aside from yarn and general clutter) is books. Oh, for all of us who scratch our heads in puzzlement, start a “Do NOT buy” list to take with you when you’re out shopping. I doubt any off would die if there wasn’t any more tea/chicken/toothpaste/pens/lip balm/etc until we could go to the 24 grocery around the corner.
I bought some new pens, which are on my don’t buy list, but am sending them to friends, thus satisfying my urge to stockpile pens and invade someone else’s home with my clutter. (Yes, the second is also an urge. I keep on wanting to stick tea in the pantry at my friend’s house, except she doesn’t drink the tea I do so it’d be my stash at her house, to drink while I’m there… She refuses to rent me a piece of her large storage closet for yarn.).

If there is ever a global shortage of kitchen sponges, I’ve got the solution!! Right now, I probably have 12 unopened pages and at least 6 open packages. A family friend got married last spring and decided to move into his wife’s house (second marriage for both) so he sold us his house, along with a ton of stuff his wife already had so he didn’t need to take with him. We found three bottles of soy sauce, four bottles of cooking oil, six boxes of spaghetti and a few cases’ worth of paper plates & plastic cups between the pantry, fridge and kitchen cabinets. Also more coffee mugs than I could ever use (hubby lives on canned sodas) and enough dishes to mix & match 8 or 9 place settings.
We suspect he was also hoarding cat fur. We moved the fridge & stove to clean behind them when we moved in and swept up a cat-sized furball. So we hired a duct cleaning service and they sucked another couple of animals’ worth of hair out of the system.
Oh! I forgot his VHS videotapes. We don’t have a tape machine any more so the few purchased movies went to friends, the other hundred or so homebrew copies (mostly not labelled) he had stashed in the basement got dumped in the trash – took a full-sized rolling bin and two big boxes to haul it all out.

The real kicker: I’ve been on a medically-supervised diet for 11 months, and during that time, the kitchen has been closed! Think portion-controlled, prepackaged foods. Good news: 105 lb gone, 25 to go.
Socks still fit, thank you very much. Well, now I cast on 64 sts instead of 72! VBG!

I have a problem with hangers. I like all clothing, except socks & undies hung up. Yes, I hang it all! My MIL made a comment a few years back when she found my hideing spot for the excess, a large rubbermaid tote, that I have a problem.
I also have a problem with baby bibs, burp cloths. I have twins and when they were infants I had to have lots of them, so I made some, had some made for me, had some given at showers etc. While packing them up recently to give to a friend, I counted over 100, I know, I know.
I also hate to do laundry, so that is another good reason to have them!
As for your food, nothing wrong with it. Almonds are good to snack on, evaporated milk is a good reason to buy chocolate to make fudge. Or just eat the chocolate & keep the milk!

No you are not alone!
I am one of those fortunate (?) wives whose husband does the grocery shopping – all of it. He makes the list, he clips the coupons, he checks the sales flyers, he shops, unloads and puts it all away. I tell him when we’re low on those things he doesn’t come in contact with much, like laundry products, and he adds those to the list. It’s really a nice division of labor as we both work outside of the house and I love not having to do this chore.
However, would someone please explain to me why there are 27 boxes of spaghetti – just spaghetti, not counting the lots of other boxes of pasta shapes – in the pantry?! And to point out the absurdity a bit more, please note that DHusband is diabetic and I am trying really hard to reduce carbs in my diet and have been for 3+ months. Wait, it gets better! To go with this immense quantity of pasta (seriously, there has to be almost 50 boxes of the stuff) there are 4, yes that’s right only *4* jars of spaghetti sauce in the house. And all of this pasta was purchased within the last 18 months; I know this because we moved into this house 18 months ago with 3 boxes of spaghetti and 3 jars of sauce in the pantry.
We won’t even discuss the quantities of packs of white socks and jockey shorts he has stockpiled for when he needs them.

I guess I have a tendency to collect staples — no, not the kind that goes in paper. Staple food stuff for the pantry. Last time I tidied my pantry I found 14 one lb bags of rice and 8 large cans of crushed tomatoes. Now we do eat both of these items with stunning regularity but not so much that I need to have that much in storage. No wonder the bottom shelf of my pantry was so saggy. I happen to have an overabundance of white cotton socks. My excuse is that I bought them all just before I started knitting sock, so now they just languish in a drawer. But there’s about 3 weeks worth of white socks in that drawer! There’s just no good excuse for that…
And at work? An overabundance of colored pens and whiteboard markers. I think I buy a set of each every time I walk into an office supply store – you’d think that by now, I’d stop!

I have a problem with kleenex. The last time I went to the store I bought 10 boxes, because I didn’t want to run out. And, got home to find there were still 5 boxes on the shelf.
I make an amazing potato soup in the crockpot that uses evaporated milk. That, with chicken broth (at least 1 box) and potatoes cooked all day is amazing. The EM makes is creamy with out making it heavy or high calorie. Mine is an adaptation from a fix-it-and-forget-it book. But, I rarely measure…so I don’t have an exact recipe to share.

I go on binges. I realize I’m buying things and I think it’s perfectly legitimate, until I wake up one day, look around, and realize that I did not need all of that stuff because I’ll never use it all. Right now I’m binging on CDs, DVDs and perfume oils.
I also tend to buy lots of canned goods and never the right ones. I’ll come home and realize I bought kidney beans instead of black beans, which are what I really needed.

Canned tomatoes. My chili recipe calls for three cans of diced tomatoes, and I tend to buy them both on the shopping trip after I make chili and when the urge to make chili strikes. And pantyhose. I always assume that I tossed the pair back in the drawer with a run, so I buy another pair. And before I know it, I have a dozen or so worn-once pair of hose in my drawer. The irony of which is that I only wear hose maybe once a month at best!

You are SO not alone! I seem to always amass lots of baking ingredients during the holidays thinking I’m going to run out or am already out of. We just cleaned out the pantry last weekend and I found 3 (three!) of the huge quaker rolled oat boxes as well as a ton of brown sugar. I also still have 4 packages of butter that I never ended up using because I always seem to grab a package while I’m at the store.
I also have about 4-5 bottles of cinnamon, so I need to bake up a storm this weekend

I have this problem with underwear. I have maybe four or five three-packs of unopened underwear in my drawer – and I have no idea when or why I bought them.
I have pretty much used up the toothpaste hoard but at one point I had maybe 10 tubes of toothpaste. I kept buying it because I thought we were out or nearly out, and couldn’t seem to remember that I’d done the same thing repeatedly!!
I don’t do this very much with food, but I know that I have three containers of nutmeg in my cupboard right now. What on earth am I expecting to do with all that nutmeg? I have no idea. I don’t even use nutmeg that often.
I can’t BELIEVE all the chocolate chip hoarders here! When I get a bag of chocolate chips, they don’t last a week in my house.

Problem? **blink** What’s wrong with sorting clothing by color? I also sort my shirts by color, as well as my trousers and my slips (which are sorted within color by length).
Yes, I also have my CD’s divided between classical and non-classical, then organized alphabetically. And before anyone goes there, yes, my books are on the shelf alphabetical by author, divided between fiction and non-fiction.
Oh, and did I mention the YELLOW shirts? In summer shirts (not counting long sleeved or turtlenecks, just t-shirts), I have 22 yellow shirts. For the winter gear, it seems to be dark red cashmere sweaters. I have 11 in varying shades from rust to burgundy, mostly turtlenecks, but two v-necks. And yes, they’re all slightly different, one from the other.
So again, I ask, why is it a problem?

Isn’t it funny how some things seem to pile up, and other things are never around when you need them? In my case, it seems like my little tubes of Burt’s Bees lip balm multiply like rabbits and end up in every coat pocket, briefcase, handbag, and bathroom drawer! The next step, of course, is that I don’t check the pockets of something and I send a little tube through the laundry, which puts little spots on everything in the load…argh.
Now, why can’t I ever find any hairpins when I need them??

So lets look at shirts – they are arranged as such – tanks, short sleeves, three quarter sleeves, long sleeves and within that no collar, collared, buttons vs non buttons. Then we get to color. lightest to darkest. yeah. its a sickness.
I have a problem with buying shoes (though I have been on a shoe diet for a few years now, so it isn’t AS bed) especially black heels. Also, cous cous. I love the stuff. Hehehe, we recently moved. So I discovered this problem in a few places in my home. . .
Spices – Really, who needs three jars of dill or ginger?
Oatmeal – Yep, I had three boxes, and two canisters. Errr . . . .
Shower gel – in my defense, I got a TON of stuff after dd was born and set it aside to use as necessary. But I think we moved at least six full bottles of it, and dd is two!
Underwear – ummm, this one is embarrassing. I had stuff from 15 years ago that I had no idea was still in my drawer!
And don’t get me started on the stuff I found in my jewelry making supplies that I had multiples of. . .
The positive, is that I discovered the multiplicities and was able to remedy the issue, where necessary. We’ll see how long before they happen again~

This is quite a timely entry….
Recently while cleaning out my closet I realized that I have a problem when it comes to cashmere sweaters. I have 11 black ones, and then about 15-20 more in orange, red, pink, white, purple, green, grey, etc,etc. Then today my current contract on my job ended so I was cleaning out my desk to move back to my company’s homebase and I opened a drawer to find a BLACK CASHMERE SWEATER that I apparently had left there which was made even more apt by the fact I was wearing a nearly identical one.
Also I have 40-50 bras. I did a clean out a few months ago and I had to take a picture because I never thought I had very many and my friends thought I was crazy.

I recently went through a pretty thorough decluttering of my house (with professional help — otherwise it never would have happened). I had an abundance of things that are in the “collection” category, most of which went to charity. I still have an overabundance of general craft supplies. If Craft Warehouse or Michaels or even Joann ever go out of business, craft fanatics everywhere can come to my house and probably find what they need. I have glass paint and t-shirt paint and beads and scrapbooking stuff and . . . the list goes on and on. And I’m not even incuding all my yarn-related stuff.
The good thing is that whenever I find myself needing a quick gift, I can usually visit the craft closet and come up with something — either that I can make quickly or, if it’s a fellow craft fanatic, bundle into its own gift package.
What don’t I have? Wollmeise yarn! Every time there’s been a sneak up of it, I’ve missed it!

My daughter’s boyfriend even brings salsa over. He must think we REALLY like it since we’re always buying it!
About once a year we clean out the cabinets whenever the post office is running their food drive and some lucky recipient in Kennebunk Maine is all set for salsa for a while.

In the freezer I have 15 bags of pecan halves, but that is intentional. Southern cooking – I use a lot! Co-workers, friends and family all go together each year, make up a bulk order, and order directly from a pecan orchard – last year we ordered 11 cases.

What’s wrong with almonds? I don’t have a problem with them, especially if they are all different! There are zillions of ways to use them. One of the few vegetables my youngest son will eat is French-style frozen green beans with slivered almonds in them, for starters. They could go on top of a lot of casseroles, or in them, for that matter.
I always try to put an item on the list when I open the last one from the pantry, so I don’t run out and there are no surprises.
I tend to stock up on blocks of colby-jack cheese and shredded Mexican style cheese when I go to Sam’s, as some of us have milk intolerance problems, and some brands are ok, while others aren’t, for some reason. Since we do not get to Sam’s very often at all (it’s 25 miles away, out of the way, so a special trip), it makes sense to stock up. But then some of the blocks get hidden in the back of the frig, and my husband gets mad at us. Then we run out of it, and you get the picture.
As long as what as you are stocking up on won’t spoil, it really is not that huge a deal…

(Well, almost never.) But next time I’m at the bookstore I see another neat card and pick up two or three (or four) of those. Same fantasy again. Same result.
Meanwhile, I need to send a birthday card, say. I look through my enormous stash of cards. Nope, none of them is quite right. Gotta go out and get something more appropriate. Oh, this one’s perfect. Better get a couple extra.

But I recently discovered something I never intended to stock pile while I was packing up my apartment to move. I discovered I owned 5 complete tool kits (hammer, screw drivers, pliers, level, etc). I have one kit that I use all the time but I guess over time I have received all these other kits as gifts or they just sneaked their way into my apartment. I seem to have a problem collecting pens and pencils, I think the pens multiply in the draw overnight, much like coffee mugs can do. I noticed this pen problem after I cleaned out my “crafting” room and collected all the pens in the house in one place. I thought I might of had a problem when I could donate an entire classroom with gift pencils and not even make a dent in the “collection.”

I have way too many bricks of vegetable shortening, I was doing a lot of cake decorating (as in making at least one or two cakes a week) at one time – last year… maybe the year before – so I’d pick up 3 or 4 bricks of shortening every week, well, I slowed down on the cake production, but currently have a stock pile of shortening that should last another couple of years.

I cleaned out my spice cabinet and found spices that I had pushed in the back
from five years ago when I first moved here. Also I take supplements for my
disease and I found supplements that I hadn’t used in five years. You are not
the only one that doesn’t always keep up with things. Since I have been losing
weight on a regular basis, I keep up with my clothes by giving them to people
who need them. So don’t be so hard on yourself. We don’t even want to talk about

For some bizarre reason I have problems with barbecue sauce. If I have any less than 5 in my fridge it’s a minor miracle. Oh, and the other problem I have is books. I completely forget which books I have in my library and will buy another copy when I’m at the bookstore only to go home and eventually find that I have the same book. But I only find it after I tossed the receipt, of course.

I found several pairs of brown corduroy pants when I cleaned my closet last time. When I cleaned my pantry I found lots of various types of pickles. But what really overruns my house is plastic shopping bags. I use them to clean the cat boxes, but I have enough for the rest of my life!!! I have switched to reusable cloth shopping bags, so things may get back to normal soon, but nothing is normal is my life and I like it that way!

Black t-shirts from Old Navy. They’re always x for $x and so I always have one more to buy and grab black to reach the number. And spices- one doesn’t think they already have that random spice and buy without checking. I would say canned tomatoes, but I use so many it isn’t really stockpiling.

I have 4 packages of ground turkey in the freezer. I’m not sure why I have 4 packages (and not the small rolls, the big strafoam kind). I do use ground turkey a lot (instead of beef which my husband won’t eat), but I tend to buy new ones each week. I use the fresh ones and never seem to use the ones in the freezer, just add to them. After a few of months, I toss out the ones that are freezer burnt. Not long after the toss, (when in the store) something in the back of my brain tells me that I need more because I just got rid of some. I have a problem, I already know this.

Well, would cookbooks count? I’ve been collecting (inadvertently) cookbooks for the past 57 years!!! I’ve given a lot of them away, but I still have four bookshelves full. I rarely use any of them anymore as I’ve copied any recipes that I’ve tested and proven into my Mastercook Software on-line. Who needs 265 cookbooks???
And, yes, I’ve got recipes for chicken, almonds and evaporated milk! I’ve even got a recipe using all three of those ingredients!
Incidentally, I made a scrumptious and easy butternut squash risotto the other night that got rave reviews…so good it was almost like dessert. Guess what…not from any of those cookbooks! A composite from butternut squash soup and my regular risotto method. After so many years of cooking and reading all those cookbooks, I guess I don’t often really use a recipe.

It is so comforting to know I am not alone with my problem…here are a few:
Shoes – I have so many pairs of shoes, it is just nuts, but the really nutty thing is that I only ever wear 3-4 pair out of my collection!
Food – I lived way out in the boonies for about 10 years, so I got in the habit of buying enough food at one time to last a month. It took me forever to break that habit, and I still sometimes find myself coming home with way more of certain things than I need.
Office supplies – especially pens…I am very picky about the pen I use, and when I find one I really like, I usually buy several packages of them…like enough to last for five years or more…
I could go on, but I am already hanging my head….HAHA

I definitely have a problem with keys! At any given time I have about 6 sets of car keys and a few different sets of work keys (for 2 different jobs), all hidden in different purses or coat pockets. I do it so that I can always find them quickly but it is really funny when more than one set ends up in the same purse because then I have to sort through a big jumbled mess to figure out which key I need for what purpose.
I also tend to hoard bobby pins. I honestly must have like 8 billion of them. Whenever I do some serious cleaning (which does not happen all that often) I find them EVERYWHERE. And yet I continue to buy more.

Mustard…the powdered kind from the herb section at the store. We have three bottles of it – one in the cabinet next to the stove and two in the pantry. I think DH uses it in some of his marinades for grilling once or twice a year, but he probably only uses a teaspoon or less at a time.
And poultry seasoning…I must have two or three of those, too. And I only use that at Thanksgiving if I’m making the dressing!

Carmex lip balm–solid tubes, squeeze tubes, and those little formerly-glass-now-plastic jars. At times, I also have an overabundance of Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream, but right now I’m down to about two fullish tubes and three almost empty tubes. Time to stock up again!

It’s not really a “problem”, I could stop any time that I wanted to, but I do love to keep boxes and bags. Hey – you never know when you’ll need a box of just that size or a bag just that big and just that thickness. It’s a practical, reuse/recycle kind of thing. Yeah, I’m being environmentally responsible.
The Tupperware is a little harder to rationalize – especially when there are 4 giant boxes of it in the basement that haven’t been unpacked in 2 years. But it has a lifetime guarantee – my kids & grandkids will have it. Again – environmentally responsible.

The distressing thing though is that every accumulation seems to be accompanied by a mysterious disappearance. So i have 6 cans of corn, but no diced tomatoes. Ten pounds of chicken breasts but no salt. Enough toilet paper to stock a bus station but no laundry soap. I am SURE I didn’t really buy all those cans of green chile, they must have been switched for the black olives I KNOW I put in my cart. I try to keep the packrat under control, especially after listening to my mom’s stories from 3-4 years ago. My dad was the executor of the estate of a long-time good friend, and the man was a Packrat Extraordinaire. Mom “got” to clean out the house to get it ready to sell. It has been THREE YEARS and we still have toilet paper from his house. She gave boxes (like copier paper boxes) and boxes of pens and pencils to kids art programs, schools, etc. He had 20 bottles of laundry detergent. 20+ Costco-sized packages of paper towels. The list goes on (and on, and on!).
As far as I’m concerned with my excessive stashes, moving last summer killed most of them. Now I just need to remember that I don’t ever want to be like that family friend

Flavored mustards to use when I make this dish in the microwave that calls for lots of fresh spinach about a pound of filleted salmon. You put the spinach in the bottom of a microwaveable dish along with some chopped up scallions, then the salmon goes on top and you spoon a mixture of equal parts of mustard and orange juice—usually about 2 tablespoons of mustard and 2 tablespoons of orange juice on top of the salmon. You cover it with plastic wrap and microwave on high for about 8-10 minutes. Apparently, I need 12-15 jars of different flavored mustards in my cabinets in order to make this dish about once every six weeks or so. And there are another 3 opened jars in the refrigerator that I’ve already used.

Flip flops and Chap-Stick are my collector’s items! I have more flip flop sandals than is reasonable for someone who isn’t even that into shoes like some women are. And I have at least one Chap-Stick in each room, one in my purse, and one on my keyring. And even then sometimes I can’t find any, so I have to go buy some! Apparently I am absolutely addicted to the stuff. During the midst of the worst fight my fiancee and I ever had (we nearly broke up, and I didn’t speak to him for days) I remember thinking about how I REALLY REALLY wanted some Chap-Stick. *L* So yeah, I have a lot of it, just in case.

Our pantry seems to breed corn starch and shrimp cocktail sauce. At least I can share the blame with my husband on that one because he is just as bad at adding to the collection as I am. I also love to buy tissue paper, as in the kind for gift bags. I’m a sucker for pretty patterns and color combonations.

Spices seem to be where I get into trouble. I either have nothing of what I need or 3-4 containers of something I rarely use .. like paprika. I don’t dare clean out anything in my house for fear I’ll find I have a worse problem than I think I do

Well, to answer the 1st query….here is a recipe with chicken humma hummas, evap milk and almonds…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Easy Almond Chicken
Baked chicken with a creamy soup sauce, topped with toasted almonds. Serve with rice if desired.
Place chicken pieces in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Season with garlic powder to taste and bake in the preheated oven for 1/2 hour.
I, for some reason, always think I’m out of egg noodles when I want to make stroganoff or goulash or some such thing. So I have something like 4 big bags of egg noodles in my cupboards.
An overabundance of anything in my house….hah…never, what, no not me, well scarcely ever! My 41 pair of Crocs don’t count, do they? Aw, c’mon, they go with the 100+ pair of hand knit socks…and the 170+ T-shirts….and yes, they are arranged by color. But then that is just about my entire wardrobe….a fashion maven I’m not!
But, hey, I come by this collecting business honestly….when I moved back into the house I grew up in to care for my mother, I did some house cleaning and found 22 packages of Nestles chocolate chips…..in varying stages of aging…from fresh to ghastly pale crumbles. Not all of them in the kitchen either. Some were tucked into linen drawers in the dining room; some had even found their way upstairs into Mom’s bedroom…in the drawers drawers (so to speak), also in the walk-in closet.
The odd thing about this was that none of the packages were opened, so it wasn’t as if she was snacking on them. Nor did she EVER, to my knowledge, bake Choc Chip cookies or anything else using them. I did figure it out later though when I took her grocery shopping. If choc chips were on sale, she bought them….why, ‘cuz they were ON SALE! Explaining to her that sale things weren’t a bargain if you didn’t need them did no good. I still found a package or two of the chips in the cart at checkout. Oh, well, she was 91 or 2 at the time.
I *know* I have too many pens, scissors, shower gels and an unnatural fascination with pajamas (I rarely wear them but I think I love the idea of them ), but the last item I accidentally stockpiled was, of all things, Safeguard antibacterial soap. It’s the only kind of soap my hubby likes, and most stores I frequent don’t seem to stock it, so whenever I do come across it, I think it’s a miracle and buy at least two four-bar packs. Let’s not talk about the number of towels and washcloths in my linen closet to accompany all that soap…
For me, it’s gift bags. I love them, and for whatever reason, I always think I’m almost out, so when there’s a sale, I stock up….some more.
Crayons….especially in autumn (when school starts). I never use them (afraid I’ll use them up and not have any). Have to force myself to let the grands use them. I just feel deprived if there are not boxes (not a box, but boxes) of crayons in the house.
Alrighty then. I have an over abundance of crushed pineapple, beets and canned frosting in my cupboards. Nothing uses those in combination that I can think of. I am also a pushover for calendars. I think that I have at least 6 right now and have thrown away at least that many. I just love them all, especially the ones that have a thought , word, puzzle, etc, a day ones. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, love ‘em.
Oh dear – do I have this dilemma!?! It seems to hit categories of things: bags, stitch markers, books. My dear husband doesn’t completely understand, so we don’t discuss it much, but it does find its way to the conversation circuit sometimes. SO glad to know I am not alone!!! And we did say yarn doesn’t count, right?
I have an overabundance of cards, Christmas cards, birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s, Anniversary, etc. Any card anybody sends me, I keep. This is bad. I need help.
Send wool. Keep the cards.
Hmmm, off the top of my head: bags, baskets, water bottles, coffee mugs, ok any kind of container. . .post-its, pens, labels. . ..recently my husband came in and told me NOT to purchase another umbrella for the rest of my life. . . that he put all 12 in a box in the garage. (note I made no mention of craft items – they dont count – the entire room devoted to yarn, fabric and stamping/scrapbook stuff)
Have a great day!
I do this with coats. I love coats. I LOVE them. As much as socks. My husband actually has told me I am cut off from buying coats. I have a black leather one, a brown leather one, a white quilted one, a black peacoat, a puffy LL Bean one, a purple LL Bean one, and a few others that I don’t wear as much.
Thanks for the contest. I so enjoy your blog and your shop!
My husband does most of our grocery shopping. He loves looking at the ads and seeing where he can get the best price. He does a fabulous job and I am so happy I don’t have to do it, however… We have 12 jars of spaghetti sauce in our cupboard!
Right now I am enjoying an abundance of walnuts. I did go thru a walnut phase in an anti inflamatory diet and did use them for snacks etc. Well right around that time my husband took over the shopping and severely overestimated my usage of walnuts. I finally caught on and put a halt to it when I had at least five large bags. Of course, now that I have such abundance, I am not in the mood for walnuts.
French Vanilla Coffee Mate. I was recently cleaning out the pantry and found 4.5 bottles of French Vanilla Coffee Mate. Only one was expired, so that’s good, but I don’t even drink that much coffee to justify having this many. It’s just everytime I go to the store, I think, “Oh! I was some coffee with French Vanilla Coffee Mate.” Then I buy some, come home and never make coffee or anything.
Thanks for the contest! I hope I win the much-coveted yarn!
Hmmm…I’m assuming like yarn, chocolate wouldn’t count. Well, the other day I counted 9 new bottles of dish soap under the sink. The thing is, I didn’t buy them…hubby did. I have no idea what he was thinking!
My problem seems to float from one item to another. My current “overstash” is mustard. I was surprised yet again when I went to put last week’s bottle in the pantry and discovered it was not going to be lonely!
I have a problem with Bisto. The stuff that thickens and makes gravy. I bought a new box away last week, because we were out, only to find 3 boxes tucked in the back of the pantry! I could probably thicken the water in my bathtub with the quantity I have LOL
My husband and I both have this problem! He thinks we don’t have certain things at the house when we go grocery shopping (salad dressing, granola bars, etc.) I think we have about 4 bottles of dressing on the pantry shelf (not to mention the 4 in the frig!) and of course there are about 5 boxes of granola bars on the shelf as well-and 2 are already on the counter! I have the problem with the frozen meats…I think we just forget about them and then when we go to look for something to make for dinner we encounter all this other STUFF!
Just this week, I though I was running low on steel wool pads. I bought some and then found 2 more boxes of them down in the basement. I should be ok for at least the next year.
Which is nothing compared to my husband’s problem with Windex. When he runs out, he never seems to be able to find any of the 3 bottles in the garage, or the 2 more down in the laundry room, or the 3 in the bathrooms & kitchen upstairs, or the 2 half-gallon refill bottles which are also in the basement. He just buys more. I think I might finally have him convinced that we don’t need any for a while.
Tea and soap. I have managed to accumulate a world class collection of tea (in volume, not necessarily quality), and it totally caught me by surprise. And my mom makes soap, so for the first year of soap making she would send me home with handmade soap every time I came to visit. I will forever be clean and mildly caffeinated!
I have way more than I will ever need of Four Seasons Zesty Italian dressing in the little packets. I buy it compulsively because I use it in one recipe– which really makes no sense because everything else involved in the recipe is a fresh ingredient so it’s not like I’m going to just *happen* to have all the stuff I need to make the recipe and only be short this little packet of salad dressing mix.
Lotion. Stuff for my face and arms and legs. About a year and half ago, I made a committment to use all the different lotions and creams I have bought because it was getting impossible to figure out where to put the new additions as they came into the house. So far, I’m a fraction of the way through, and still going strong. No signs of running out this year, or next. It is dry in Colorado, bu
