Almonds, Evaporated Milk, and a CONTEST!
I’ve been on a cleaning kick this week, and I have discovered some alarming things. Remember my problem with frozen chicken br**sts? (Why the stars? I don’t want to be attached to a google-search for that word…..) I have shared with you that I keep buying bags of chicken, because I’m always sure that we’re “out” at home. Well, apparently that’s not all I tend to buy without reason. This week I attacked the pantry and guess what? I found 4 cans of evaporated milk. First of all, I can’t remember the last time I used evaporated milk. And secondly, the only thing I think I use it for is mashed potatoes and fudge, neither of which has been made in this house for a long time. So - weird. The next thing I discovered “en masse” was almonds. Seven bags of them, all unopened. At least I had the good sense to buy different types. There were whole almonds, there were slivered almonds, and there were sliced almonds. I’m good. I think that I had intended to make a few batches of this incredible recipe and couldn’t remember what kind of almonds it called for. But I know that I didn’t buy these packages all at once - they accumulated. I know this because they were all in different spots in the pantry. FPS.
Just so you don’t think my problem is limited to food, I also cleaned out my closet this week. (I took Monday off - remember? I got a LOT done.) I actually sorted my shirts by color (I know. Too much.) and guess what I found out? I have a problem with white shirts. You wouldn’t believe how many white shirts are in my closet. Now in my defense, this is a completely different situation than four cans of evaporated milk. None of these shirts are exactly alike. There are different fabrics, different necklines, different sleeve lengths, and different styles. But still. I don’t think that on the days that I’m going to wear a white shirt, I need to have that many choices to face in the morning. FPS.
So, here is where the contest comes in. I want to know that I am not alone in this lunacy. Surely there are some of you out there who have an overabundance of something in your freezer/fridge/pantry/closet, that you never intended to have in abundance. Please tell me I’m not alone in this. And yarn doesn’t count because there is no recognized word in a knitter’s language that translates to “excess” or “overabundance”. Fortunately. Leave your answer in the comments section, and I will draw a name next Friday, February 1st, for the winner. What does the winner get? A skein of Wollmeise Sock Yarn.
I thought that would be a good way to start out our monthly blog contests for 2008. And for those of you who don’t have this little problem? You can still enter the contest. Just leave a comment and say, “I don’t seem to have that problem.” and consider yourself entered. I will try to contain my jealousy.
Speaking of contest winners, thank you to everyone who cast votes for the Q4 Challenge this week! There were actually several entries that ran neck and neck with a lot of votes, but the one that got the most votes was the Anemoi-Inspired Mittens, done by Nicole. So Nicole gets the Knitters Choice Award - a $25 Loopy Gift Certificate. And the randomly drawn winner from all of the entries was the Monkey Socks by Karen! Karen also gets a $25 Loopy Gift Certificate. It’s always so fun to see the different interpretations you all come up with for the Quarterly Knitting Challenges. You still have over 2 months left to participate in the Q1-08 - I hope you’ll join us!
Monday we will start a new, regular blog feature called The Loopy Limelight! We have so many fun and interesting people who have become part of the Loopy Family (and that includes all of you) and I thought it would be nice to introduce you to some of them. Monday, I will introduce you to a longtime friend of mine, who has a wonderful recipe (it contains chocolate - yum!) that she is going to share. We’re looking forward to sharing many more people with you in the weeks and months to come, usually on Mondays. We hope this brings some fun recipes and tips and inspiration for all of you.

chicken almondine, maybe?
i have a problem with black shirts. i’ll see one and think “oh i can use that, my one like it at home is faded/has stains/has disappeared into the abyss that is my laundry room . . . ” and then when i bring it home, it joins the collection of the others and the one its meant to replace, well, never gets all the way out.
at least i’m never at a loss for something to wear when the baby uses my shirt for a burp cloth/tissue/teething toy!

Strangely enough for me, it’s index cards. I love to use them for notes, but I don’t use them THAT often. One day I cleaned and found 20 packs of 100 cards each. Mostly they were white lined, but I had about three packs each of multi colored and blank. The real kicker is that I still get an urge to buy them, even though I know I have about 18 packs sitting in my closet at home.
It also happens with bags, but I figure they count about as much as knitting does.

Black purses…I can’t believe the size and variety that I have…I’m trying to train myself to check the closet and the dresser before I buy another one!
And one way to use those almonds and evaporated milk, I’d make seven layer cookies.
Have a good weekend!

Boy, do I have that problem?! I buy chocolate milk in sets of two, but I seem to do it tree times a week. It’s the same with potato bread! And I also seem to hoard unsalted butter, you know, in case I need to frost a wedding cake. Incidentally, I don’t keep enough confectioners’ sugar on hand to make that possible. I’ll stop now. I don’t want to know the full extent of my insanity!

Can you say “baking chips”?? I’m not even sure what I thought I was going to bake, but in my recent pantry cleaning I discovered enough baking chips to circle the earth several times. I had milk chocolate chips, dark chips, mint chips, raspberry chips (I didn’t even know they made this kind!), butterscotch, toffee, and several other kinds that I don’t recall at the moment. All tucked away in different little corners of pantry world. I think I might mix them all together and create a humongous batch of Everything Cookies…

I seem to buy instant soups like there’s no tomorrow and I keep thinking I’ll eat them at work but I never seem to bring them WITH me to work so I can make them. So Soup at Hand and Cup of Noodles are taking up too much space in my cabinets.

My problem has to do with fabric (I know, I know, you can never have to much, etc). A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to make a bed-sized Log Cabin quilt, but I only wanted to use blue prints that were “christmas” like (snowflakes, holly branches, etc). So every time I walked into a quilt shop, I’d look for blue fabrics that fit the category, and buy a half yard of everything that fit. This started 4 years ago.
At last count, I have 35 yards of blue, christmas-y fabric. I also have 7 yards of a gorgeous WoC snowflake print to use for the other sides of the log cabin. How far am I on this project? You guessed it - I have the fabric. Enough, by my calculations, to make 4 queen sized log cabin quilts (with skinny 1″ finished rails even!).
I also started to collect cream/beige prints for my fabric stash as well. I was up to 30 yards, but I managed to cut that down making a neutral stars on white king sized quilt for a friend. If you don’t think this is a problem, please consider for a moment that all of my fabric is bought in Local Quilt Shops, and rarely on sale. The average price per yard is $8.50.

I had to laugh at the evaporated milk because I do that too! I tend to buy too much bread because I always think we are out.
Oh and I sort my shirts by color too - black is the color I have too much of.

I was searching for a particular spice in my spice cupboard over the Holidays and found 2 large containers and also a bag of cinnamon. Same thing - I bought one “just in case” I didn’t have one at home. I hope it doesn’t go bad, as it’s going to take A LOT of baking to use it all up! I don’t seem to have a problem with clothes though, but I do tend to get black or white t-shirts as they’re more versitile (safer)than particular colors.
Well glad to hear at least some one got things organized. I have a pile of papers that need to be filed away, but the stack continues to grow.
Can’t wait to view the new Blog feature next week. Till then, I’ll just keep knitting away. Too cold to go outside, but there’s a warm up this weekend - 30’s!! Enough of this below zero “stuff”.
Have a Good Weekend!

I currently own 17 cans of Cream of Chicken soup. I have no idea why and I have no idea what I actually use it for, the occasional pot of Chicken and Dumplins and Chicken Pot Pie, I guess. We moved here 2 months ago and one of the first boxes I opened had 9 cans of Cream of Chicken soup and since then I have always picked up a couple cans of Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom whenever I go to the store. I have no idea why, just tradition, I guess. This is a very scary truth to learn about ones self. But I at least I finally have a legacy to leave to my children

I’m a big-time couponer. I’ve been doing it for over 20 years, so I’m pretty good at it. I always buy items in abundance when I can get them practically free. Pratically free is a stock-up price! The item I have an overabundance of right now is deodorant–I have 20, but then again I got all of them either free or for less than 25 cents. Using coupons makes it possible for me to shop at The Loopy Ewe!

Oh and I forgot to mention - we were discussing what to do with cans of Eagle Brand milk (condensed, not sure if that is different from what you have) yesterday at my knitting group. Apparently, you can immerse the UNOPENED cans in boiling water on the stovetop for about 20 minutes to make dulce de leche. You boil the cans and then let them cool THOROUGHLY WITHOUT OPENING. Once cooled, you can open the can up and pour it into a graham cracker crust , then chill for a really yummy pie. Maybe you could sprinkle slivered almonds on top and finish with whipped cream? I guess this is a really old-style cooking trick that houseiwves used to use - do 4 cans at a time, and keep the spares in the fridge, so that you always have something ready for company!

Hi! My problem is with purses/bags. I have a ga-gillion of both. With bags especially, I think… Oh I love that… it would be perfect for my knitting! Now with purses… I know I have a ton… yet I justify it by saying I’m a “collector.” Hope you all have a wonderful day! Happy Knitting all!!

Before I even got to the “contest” aspect of this, I was thinking, WHAT A RELIEF! I’m not the only person who does this! I seem to go through “phases” where I over buy something like that. Just the other night I was on the phone with my mom and I was looking in the cupboards for something to cook, and I was commenting to her about how many cans of tunafish I have. I don’t know WHY. I rarely eat the stuff! But just lately every time I go to the store, I seem to think we’re out so I buy more! Prior to that, I actually did it with SALT of all things. I now have 3 unopened containers of salt in my baking cupboard. I know I’ve done it in the past with spaghetti noodles and paper towels too. I’m just so relieved to know I’m not the only one who does this…

I used to have this problem with tea. I’d get some every time it went on sale - different kinds most times, luckily. I must have thought I was using it more quickly than I was, because I somehow ended up with more than four boxes after it was rearranged to take up as little space as possible (and I’m a student with limited storage space, so that’s a significant amount for me). Then I completely stopped buying tea. I’m going to have to start again soon.
Also, socks. I don’t buy socks for myself, but I do knit them. I don’t have a problem with that, because each pair of socks I knit is special in its own way (at least to me). It’s the socks I’m given that have built up to ridiculous levels, because I don’t ever remember to throw them away. I should get rid of the rattiest ones at least.

I don’t have this problem, yet. I’m convinced the only reason I have yet to experience this is only because I’m still in college, and live at home where most of the grocery shopping is done by my mother. I generally find that when I go out to go shopping, I happily go about my day trying things on, and just as I’m about to go to the checkout counter, I remember - I have that in my closet already. This happens A LOT, so I’m sure its only a matter of time before I start buying these things rather than putting them back. Though, I don’t think it reflects badly on you. We all have memory issues - I know I rarely can remember where I put something I just had in my hands not a minute earlier, and I’m 21! At least you know that your tastes in clothing are consistent. It would be bad, I think, if you looked in your closet and saw 15 things you have never worn or would never wear again.
Come to think of it, that is my problem. I’m incapable of letting go, I attach special meaning to clothes, even though I know they are never going to be worn again. I have this problem with t-shirts - I don’t wear them anymore, but I continue to buy them, at concerts and schools and Urban Outfitters. But at heart, I love argyle and cardigans and I know that my sense of style has changed. And I usually keep them around for a few months before coming to my senses and clean out my closet. So, a similar problem, but not exactly the same thing.

Last week I noticed I have 6 jars of sweet pickle relish in my pantry. The only person who eats relish is my husband, and the only thing he eats them on is hot dogs, which I only cook once a month, if not less. I think what happens, is EVERYTIME I go to the store to buy hot dogs, I think “Oh man, am I out of relish? I better get some” and then I get home and look in the fridge and there is always half a jar, so I toss the jar I just bought into the pantry. Why I cannot remember that I already have 897897324 jars of relish in the pantry everytime I buy hot dogs, I don’t know. I’m only 28 years old, aren’t I a little young to be having such memory problems?!

Great timing! I discovered this weekend while pouring through the cabinets looking for cinnamon…that I have 7, yes SEVEN, of the Mccormick black pepper grinders. No cinnamon, but SEVEN black pepper grinders. And I don’t even USE that much pepper. I can’t even imagine how I came up with that many.
Also, not in MY pantry…but I cleaned out my mom’s pantry two christmas’s ago when I was home for the holidays. My mom has more ziploc bags, plastic utensils, and plastic cups that a normal family of 4 could possible use in a year. And she lives alone!!! I ended up consolidating them best as I could and hung a reminder note in the pantry and on the door to the garage that said “Under NO circumstances are you to buy: ” and then listed the stuff out. It was crazy! And now over a year later…she’s barely made a dent in it all!

It’s tea for me. I seem to go through phases where the IDEA of a cozy cup of hot tea is appealing and so I buy some tea and then….I don’t know, I guess the weather warms up. I cleaned out my cupboard and was startled to discover about 20 various bags and boxes of tea - loose, bag, caf, decaf, herbal, medicinal, flavored - you name it. I’m trying to work my way through it because if I can drink up most of the tea, then I’ll get about half a cupboard back

I love to make chocolate chip cookies and I’ll go to the grocery store intending to just do normal shopping and say “Oh I don’t think I have any chocolate chips” and get some. Twice a year my husband makes tamales. In the dough he uses shortening. Shopping for the tamale making happens days in advance. Apparently he shops for the tamales, but does not always cook them right away. That gives him time to forget that he had already purchased everything. Last month I cleaned out the pantry and found 14 sticks of shortenting. 14! Not only will we never be able to use it all before it expires, but I am pretty sure he will drag more home next time. “Just in case.”

Well, I think that I have a problem buying toilet paper. Every time I make a “Walmart Trip” I buy a few packages (packs of 4). It is just me and my husband so we don’t need all that much in storage. The last shopping trip when the hubby was helping put the stuff away he asked me if we really needed 5 more pkgs of TP.

I can’t believe I won…now I will have to decide what to get with my gift certificate!!! My husband asked me just this week why I bought more corn meal when I had an unopened container in the pantry… well the plastic container I keep the cornmeal in was empty so I thought I needed some. He also asked why I had so much chicken in the freezer and never seemed to cook it (he hates chicken by the way). We also seem to have an abundance of canned tomato products (I must have been thinking about making homemade spaghetti sauce). You are not alone in your mass quantity purchases.

I have a problem with cans of coconut milk. I think I have at least five right now, huddling on different shelves of the pantry. Most are low fat, but at least one regular sneaked home with me. I should group them together for company
Can’t help you use up the evaporated milk, but get some mild curry powder, a can of coconut milk (I can help you with that!), and an onion, and you can make a good curry with the chicken and almonds (brown the meat with the onion, dump in the coconut milk, almonds, and some curry powder, add carrots or green beans or some other vegetable, simmer 20 minutes or so while the rice cooks, and serve with almonds for garnish).
Penzey’s in Maplewood has excellent curry powder, and the English aisle of Global Foods has Sharwoods curry powder in mild, medium, and thermonuclear. Both are excellent. I recommend Penzeys if you cook at all, they have five different kinds of cinnamon and spices and blends you’ve never even heard of.

I don’t have the problem with food, but in the closet, it’s black pants. Different lengths for different shoes, different weights of fabric for different seasons, different shades of black, dressy black, casual black, etc. The good thing is that I’m one of those crazy people who love organizing, so I clean my closet regularly, and am often enlisted by my friends to clean their closets!
As far as the almonds go, I had an incredible salad last weekend that a friend made - just spinach, mixed greens, strawberries, and poppyseed dressing, but she added glazed almonds - it was fabulous!

As for food or condiments, I have 5 bottles of ketchup and 4 bottles of mustard. I don’t know why but everytime I go to the store it seems like I am always buying a bottle of ketchup. I do this with tea (as well as other things). I keep buying tea because I think we must almost be out or that a “new” flavor would be good to have. And now I have a pullout drawer in my pantry cabinet that is FULL of tea. I could hold a lot of tea parties and never run out of tea! In my closet it would be shoes and especially purses. I think I am on a quest to find the perfect purse. The problem is that I don’t get rid of the not so perfect ones…beause they never get ratty. Only the almost perfect and perfect ones wear out.

Butter. Unsalted. And red wine.
I’ve gotten better at not doing this last-minute buying. I make a list at home and then stick to it. And when I wonder if I have something but I can’t really remember? I don’t buy it. This wonderful change came about because of a period of unemployment, when I couldn’t afford to spend any extra.

I have two problems! The first is tea - I can’t go to the grocery store without scouring the tea section, and always leave with AT LEAST one box, usually more. Now don’t get me wrong, I love tea, but at most I drink two cups a day. I have a cabinet devoted to my tea! It reminds me, in some ways, of my yarn obsession!
I also, unintentionally, seem to be hoarding Bush’s baked beans. My grocery store had them in a bin at the end of the aisle for $1.00, and I guess I got into the habit of buying them. Not long ago I cleaned my pantry closet, and discovered I had TEN cans of beans!!! Now, my daughter and husband like them, but I really don’t serve them very often. I expect they will last me well into the summer.
By the way, I had 3 cans of evaporated milk - don’t even remember buying them, and have no idea what I will use them for!

I am terrible at remembering what we have and what we don’t. I can’t tell you how many times I end up with books (knitting books or leaflets, children’s books, whatever) in duplicate, triplicate, or quadrupal form. I also get in my mind we are almost out of something, but can’t seem to remember I’ve restocked. That might explain the 3 cases of chicken broth in the pantry or the 4 jars of ginger in the spice cabinet. Now, I know you said yarn doesn’t count, but the LYS gets a kick out of the times I come in and buy the same yarn in the same color 2 or 3 times in a row.

I have your same affliction! I have gotten better but I recently did an inventory of the dried herbs and spices in the pantry. Tell me…. Does ANYONE need four cans of ground cloves? I think not. And three containers of sesame seeds is also unnecessary!

Brown sugar (four boxes I can think of), and unsalted butter (three 4-stick packages in the freezer). Now, if I just had the chocolate chip problem some of the other folks have, I’d be in business. I could make cookies for an army.
On the wardrobe front - khaki pants. Six (maybe seven)different pairs in slightly different shades and styles to make up different outfits.

Black slacks and jeans. I have no less than 25 pairs of black bottoms. I only wear 4-5 of them. I also have 5 white tanks and 4 black tanks. I do better with those and seem to wear 2 of them often and rotate the others when I ‘find’ them.
I buy the mini-cans of evaporated milk in case of an emergency. I found 3 cans hidden at the back of my pantry a week ago. I also found 3 cans of great northern beans. I’m sure I bought them with a recipe in mind but apparently I never made whatever it was! lol
That’s all I can think of right now. You are NOT alone!

You are not alone! I have done this with several grocery items over the past few years. Currently we have 5 containers of Mortons table salt! We use maybe one every 6-8 months if that. I kept buying more of it though for some reason. I have also done this with cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup and for some reason I seem to have a lifetime supply of sweetened condensed milk. I will never use it before the expiration date so I am going to put most of it in a box and drop it off at the local food pantry.

You are sooooo not alone in this, Sheri. My pantry sees the same thing happen with flour, sugar, and choc chips. Oddly enough….the ingredients for homemade choc chip cookies. This happens because I want to always have the “stuff” to make cookies whenever the whim strikes me
And forgetting I have already restocked said items…I will restock them again. Fortunately for my house the discovery of this usually leads to massive cookie baking to use up some of the “stuff”.

I, too, have been on a mild cleaning kick, but this weekend I’m taking a little break for some “me” time - even though the original plan was to clean out 3 specific areas of my small apartment.
I don’t seem to have an overabundance of one particular thing, just lots of stuff in general. I’m very sentimental. I do however, need to clean out my closets - and I will be color coding my shirts, sweaters, jackets, pants, etc. You are not alone in this. I have a very specific system I use, but every now and then, things get crazy and I don’t stick to it. So, I start all over when I want to also donate clothing that I will no longer wear for whatever reason. Once this complete overhaul of cleaning is complete (hopefully by end of May as I want to move to a different apartment), I’ll be completely organized and not let it get out of control again! We’ll see how that goes, lol… : )

I’m fairly certain the cranberry sauce was the result of too many folks making trips to the store at Thanksgiving, but the tomato paste… I have no idea why I have so much of that. And..all of these pens are good pens…the junk ones have been donated to my post office. Sigh……………on to tissue paper! I must have at least 500 sheets of tissue paper. My mother used to call it the “stock item syndrome” and I have it too, except I either have 16 or none of something (that I really thought I had). Chicken broth is a good example. I have gallons of it right now, but only because I needed it a week or so ago, thought I had gallons, but had none. I also have a problem with kitchen garbage bags. I either have 700 of them or I’m totally out…just when I don’t need to be. My daughter just thinks it’s unbelievable that I just cannot keep tabs on this stuff, but wait til she has to keep her own groceries. I’m sure this is an inherited trait.

Pens…I have a huge thing with pens. I love them, can’t get enough. I’m not allowed in Office Supply stores because I would buy them out.
Another big one…Chocolate chips. Full bags, half bags, semi-sweet, milk chocolate. The list is endless. I think there are 6 or 7 full bags in the cupboard right now. I go grocery shopping every two weeks, and I always throw a bag of chocolate chips in the cart, like I’m buying milk or something that actually gets used. I also have 4 cans of pumpkin pie mix even though I stopped using the can stuff 5 years ago. Wonder why I bought them?

As for the kitchen, pasta and spaghetti sauce. I have 18 jars and more boxes than I care to admit. I’m not sure what it is. Flash back to when I had no money? I always pick up some when I’m at the store - and I really don’t eat a lot of pasta anymore.

Right now, I have 6, none of which are the “new” ones. The six are leftovers from previous winters. I have them in my purse, car, top of the microwave, bathroom closet, nightstand. I think I put my comment in the wrong place so here goes again. We have developed a routine of items we always use and therefore buy, whether we really need them or not. The biggest stash is canned chicken broth, vegetable broth when I can find it and then beef broth. The second biggest row in the pantry is the cream of xxx soups, mostly cream of chicken. We don’t even use them often, guess we just want to have one handy if/when we do need it. Then come the canned beans of all sorts- various seasoned and unseasoned black beans, garbanzos, pintos, light and dark kidney, butter beans, navy, cannellini - any that are available.

I can’t believe some of you have “extra” bags of chocolate chips. That is just wrong. You can send some to me if you need space in your pantry. For me it is rice. I never think I have any rice and I always do. And trash bags. I found 3 boxes of them the other day, in various stages of open-ness. I have been making a concerted effort over the last year (and renewed my efforts over the last month) to actually use things all the way up before I buy more. It is really interesting to see how long I can go between “I think I need more ______” and actually being out of it.

Mom was always afraid she’d run out of something and kept things really stocked up. We had an entire separate freezer full of frozen foods and half a cow. She bought the large 5 gallon milk container, the one with a spigot on the bottom. I have definitely inherited that “can’t run out” paranoia from her. This year what I bought too much of was walnuts but it’s always something. When I got into scrapbooking I bought far too many sheets (3 in every color) of sticky letters only to realize later that I like the eensy ones much better. Hubby knows well that anytime you use the backup item to refill the container (brown sugar for example) you must immediately put that item on the list even though we aren’t yet technically out. Costco/BJs/Sam’sClub is my mecca.

Even with an extra pantry, we’ve had to resort to “alternative” storage. I can’t resist the school supply sales. Fresh spiral notebooks for 10 cents! Never mind that my kids only use one or two a year. I still buy a dozen every year. Then when we move I give them away.
We’ll be moving in 5 months and I’m sure I’ll find more of these types of things.
And even though you cannot have an excess of yarn, you can buy the same thing twice or for some reason buy all green yarn for months and month until stash looks like Oscar the Grouch is hiding in it.

Would you believe: flour- ?!? I bake a lot of bread, so always have bread flour, and while I grind my own wheat for whole wheat stuff, I tend to forget how much All-Purpose I have….
Evaporated milk: Mashed-Potato Fudge!!! (how gross doesn *that* sound?!?) Actually, the only things I use it for are those two things, and pumpkin pie.
Almonds: Make your own almond butter. Toast ‘em up, throw ‘em in the food processor. Almond butter is the most wonderful stuff……….
Chicken breasts: grilled on top of a spinach or Caesar salad.
All together: I’m sure there’s some casserole you could make using the evaporated milk for the cream sauce and almonds on top…..

We usually joke about tomato paste, because my MIL used to always buy a tin of it when she went shopping because she was afraid she didn’t have any. One is white corn meal, but still - it’s not like we make cornbread that often. I think a purge might be in order this weekend. Thanks for the fun contest!

The first thing that comes to mind for me is bags. I have A LOT of bags - purses, totes, little cosmetic bags, etc. And black t-shirts. For some reason I have a lot of those, too.

Lip Balm. Yep - everywhere you look there is lip balm! It used to be something I lost all the time when I just had one or two. So, to combat this problem, I bought more! And more. And more. I have no idea how many there are, but I think there are six in my desk drawer at home, one here at work, two in my backpack/purse, three in my bathroom cabinet and one by my bed. And that’s not counting the ones that I’ve bought for my husband (at least 5 more). Plus lotion seems to be multiplying at an absurd rate these days. I will eventually go through this stuff as I live in a very dry climate…but still!
I also just noticed three bags of frozen peas in the freezer the other day. This is my husband. I hate peas, and we rarely use them!

I have an obsession with pens and sticky notes. I’m horrible when we have to go in an office supply place. I always have to go see if they have anything new. I think I have every color of the rainbow in pens.

I’m on a bowl diet, per my husband. There’s a rule in our house–”a bowl comes in, then a bowl must leave.” We have too many as it is.
I don’t know HOW we ended up this many of the things. I’d never run into anything like it before–too many bowls. But here we are.

I see my affliction has already been mentioned, so I don’t feel so bad. It’s lip balm. I MUST have one handy wherever I go. I have one in every purse I own, one (or two) at my desk, in my nightstand, on the table beside my knitting chair, just about everywhere I can think of. Even so, I am constantly grabbing more when I’m in the drug store or grocery. At the rate I use them, they do go quickly, so I just keep buying more! I even seem to be passing it on to my daughters. Don’t you know that when I filled their Christmas stockings I just had to throw in a lip balm or three!
And to all you chocolate chip hoarders, I’m in awe. An open bag of chocolate chips wouldn’t last a day in my house. Man, you guys have willpower!

Cream of Tartar
The last time I cleaned out the pantry I found 5 jars of it. My husband still teases me, asking if we have any cream of tartar in the house. I suspect it is a lifetime supply.

I definitely have this problem! for me, it’s black beans. Black bean burritos are a favorite dish of mine, and somehow every time I’m in the store, I’m convinced that I used up the last can and need to get more. At this moment, we have 6 cans of black beans. Enough for several weeks worth of black bean burritos. But I’m guessing it won’t be long until I bring home another can!

My problem begins with the fact that I buy groceries in twos!! Two of everything!! It looks like I am shopping for a friend.
I happen to have much too much of the following… but the trick is that the stuff is somewhere in the house, it’s just that my precious three children feel the need to use/move/take it…
Lip balm
pens
pencils
note pads
The stuff that I just buy too much of because I think we are running out…
Pickles
ketchup
mustard
feminine products
The stuff we run out of because I *forget* that we need to replenish…
facial tissues
napkins
TP…. or maybe it’s those kids….
LOL
Cream of Chicken Almonidine?? (sp)

Hmm, to name a few, Black shirts, black socks, brown socks, baking chips, chicken broth, canned mushrooms, GLOVES/MITTENS for myself and the kids, Hats for the kids (yes, I know I could knit them, but I buy them too) small purse-lets (I can never find the right one), coin purses (they are so cute) knitting bags (natch), shredded cheese…..oh, I think I need an intervention!

For my DH and me, it’s corn (creamed & regular) and Jiffy corn meal for a family recipe for “scalloped corn” casserole. Whenever any of these items is on sale, we stock up. Not that this recipe is a weekly deal, of course. We try to moderate ourselves! But we always have at least 4 or more boxes of the Jiffy corn muffin mix on hand, and enough corn to go with it. That, and cans of mushrooms, nearly deserve their own shelf in our pantry!

I have that problem with lots of stuff.
T-shirts. The kind with sayings on them and just plain ones too. I could wear a clean t-shirt for every meal and still not have to do laundry for more than a week. The one’s with sayings I buy cause they tickle my funny bone but I don’t actually wear them that often. I’ve been trying to winnow down but I just found http://www.craftygear.com/ thanks to Lime-n-Violet and I think I’m about to make my problem soooo much worse. The ones without sayings are usually from me trying to match something I don’t have with me and so buying it in case it’s right (almost always this is at Target so it’s not like I’m spending that much) but then it doesn’t go with what I hoped it would. But it’s pretty so I don’t take it back… I have currently 3 different shades/styles of teal long sleeve t-shirt. I did clear out some though so I have a more reasonable number of shirts without sayings than I do with sayings.
Then there’s blank books/journals I seem to buy them much faster than I use them up. Again with the pretty or otherwise tempting.
Tea I keep a stash of. Not as big as my yarn or fiber stashes, but what I need. I mean, you need your morning tea, and then your afternoon tea, and your tea “strong enough to trot a mouse on” for when you really need to wake up, and your herbal teas for visitors, and decaf tea to keep the hubby from sleepwalking…
Food, I’ve finally managed to stop doing the overbuy thing. But I had to organize my pantry and then be ruthless about only shopping from the list if I wasn’t 100% certain I had used the last of something. I stll have 6 jars of Soy Vey sauce from before the great rule lockdown but that was on purpose. They were on sale and we were using them really fast. So i bought 6, and (naturally) for some reason we immediately stopped using that sauce. LOL The other thing I always end up with too much of is canned pumpkin. I buy it to make pumpkin apple bundt bread and then don’t make it. And then hubby wants pumpkin pie so he buys it or gets me to because I’ve forgotten I have some and then I don’t get around to making the pie and neither does he. Or like this year, someone offers to bring the pumpkin pie to the holiday meal. Either way I end up with pumpkin. And evaporated milk since hubby buys that too. I have a good recipe that uses condensed milk but not evaporated. Sorry.

jeans (but I only ever seem to wear one pair.)
Hair products (but I”m a wash and wear sort of girl)

nail polish (but I go to shops to get my manicures done.)

Well, my husband says I have that problem with buying black shoes, but of course that’s not a problem at all. Right?
The real problem in my house is salsa.
It always seems to be on the grocery list, so we buy a jar (or two if it’s on sale or we have a coupon), only to find a whole colony of them scattered around the pantry.
I think it’s because when I put the groceries away, I stack the salsa next to the chips; when my husband puts the salsa away, he stacks them next to the canned vegetables. And whoever makes the grocery list that week only checks the place they put the salsa…

For us, it’s PASTA.
We don’t even eat all that much pasta (I love it, hubby notsomuch). So, anytime we have a recipe for it, it is put on the grocery list, neither one of us checks to see if we have it, and we end up in the pasta aisle thinking: “Well, it’s cheap and I don’t want to go out if we DON’T have it, so let’s just by a box.”
We have bowties, Rotini, every shape you can imagine. Spaghetti. Angel hair. Linguine. An ENTIRE SHELF in our pantry - I kid you not.
Ummm….pasta, anyone?
:P

Um…I would have to say books. There are times I buy a book and then find one on my bookshelves already. It’s one thing to wear them out from re-reading…but this is a little extreme.
We won’t talk about my abundance of black shirts and pants. That was actually intentional.
Mmm…almonds. I’m sooo hungry!!

It’s a good thing sock yarn doesn’t count!
I tend to overstock on the tri-color noodles. My boys love salad made from these noodles, so I like to keep a supply on hand. I know it’s gotten out of hand though when my youngest son asks if I think we have enough. I don’t know why he needs to get sarcastic just because there are 7 or 8 bags in the cabinet.

Coffee and tea. I do love both of them but for some reason I keep buying more and more and more. We literally have shelves full of coffee pods for our machine that have been there for months! The irony being that I’m not suppose to really have caffeine….and my spouse isn’t so big on coffee, heh. That reminds me, I did actually just buy more coffee last week… So if the end of the world is upon us, you can all hit me up for caffeinated beverages.

I think I am just obsessive. I have at any one point had an excess of…..
chicken breasts
spaghetti
tea
toilet paper
crayon/pens/pencils
journals
clorox disinfecting wipes
paper towels…
the list goes on and on.
Maybe I need professional help.
I always think we need more of those items. I’m getting better about it. I think it has to do with the fact that we have gone from an 8 person household to a 6 person household in the last couple of years. I still think I’m buying for a small army.
PS I once had a very good wild rice and chicken casserole with almonds. You could probably find that online.

There seem to be quite a few people with this “problem”. My specific addiction is for dried beans! Soooo healthy, last nearly forever and come in so many pretty colors.
Once I discovered a place to buy heirloom dried beans, I wanted to collect them all. It must be the same gene that makes me want every color of Wollmeise sock yarn!!

It’s those trips to Target that get me in trouble — kids’ toothpaste, office supplies (pens, sticky notes, notepads — all that stuff in the dollar section right up front!), liquid soap refills (4 in different parts of the house at last look), purse-sized kleenex packs (none of which are ever in my purse when I need them). Just, you know, STUFF! My husband loves to acquire ziplock bags in all sizes whenever we do household shopping.
Thanks for exempting yarn…

I looked in the kitchen after reading your post. I found 5 jars of vanilla in the cabinet. I don’t know when I was planning to bake THAT much stuff. Perhaps if we run out of booze we can drink it.
Next to it I found 8 bottles of vinegar. There is at least a bit of variety there but do we really need 3 bottles of red wine vinegar when we usually use balsamic? (The balsamic’s low, too; must add it to the shopping list.) These two items must be my culinary equivalent of yarn, since I don’t remember buying a third of what’s in my stash, either.

I have three big bottles of ketchup–that I bought all in the same week! I kept remembering that I needed ketchup. Until I got home. By the third bottle I felt really silly. I also have 8 boxes of green tea with lemon–you know, just in case I run out, and two spare containers of cumin.
I found a neat recipe site yesterday, where you enter your mood and any food cravings and it gives you a recipe. Maybe that will help you with the almonds, evaporated milk, and chicken! http://www.cookthink.com/

Office supplies.
I swear, if I actually cleaned house from top to bottom, I would have enough clear sheet protectors (I use them to hold all my documents in binders, it’s the only way I can keep track of anything), Sharpies, pens, index cards (I must have dozens of unopened packs, god only knows what I thought I needed them for), looseleaf paper… I mean, I understand I’ve been in college for the last four years and stuff is going to accumulate, but I have enough to run a small business for a decade, I feel. And yet I’ll still buy the damn stuff because I forget I have ridiculous amounts of it lurking at home already! It’s a curse.

I’m laughuing out loud because i can totally relate and, natch, I have a sinilar story. Last year we had our bathrooms redone and, in preparation I boxed up the contents and organized it a little bit. I found in excess of 18 big tubes of toothpaste under the sink. I think I know how it happened. If I have a coupon AND an item is on sale then I’m compelled to buy it. That’s not where the story ends though. I made a mental note to stop buying toothpaste for them next gazillion years and, to eliminate temptation, I stopped clipping toothpaste coupons. It worked for a while but I fell off the wagon again because it turns out that most of the stash is Colgate but my daughter prefers Aquafresh and I’m a Crest girl. I think that the total in the house is up to about 21 now. I need an intervention. (or pretty Wollmeise to tempt me away from the toothpaste aisle)

I have that problem with chicken, too–then worry a hurricane will come along, no power and I’ll have a smelly freezer full of chicken.
But I also have 33 pounds of 60% cocoa choc. chips. Got a great price on half of them, then months later they went on sale again, and I couldn’t resist. Now I have no reservations about making something chocolate, I won’t run out now!!
And I used to make lots of Christmas ornaments and snowmen to sell and was always looking for the perfect snowman noses…skewers, toothpicks, etc. Think I could make about a thousand!

I use it for a sweet potato casserole that I make on Thanksgiving and other times throughout the year, and I can never find the partly-used bags when it comes time to make the recipe again, so I buy more. Recently I collected the many half-used bags and hopefully I will remember NOT to buy coconut next time I make this recipe!
