One of the few knitting projects I have done is also a leper bandage for our church – they still do then as a regular Humanitarian Project and they are still made as you described.

They are called Nordy Bars because they were originally served by the department store Nordstroms in their Cafe – we frequent shoppers affectionately call it “Nordy’s”.

My grandmother taught me to knit as she was knitting bandages for her church group to send to the leper colony, Moloka’i. I remember them as all white cotton, 4 inches wide and forever long, knit in garter stitch. They were rolled and safety pinned and sent to Hawaii. The church group did this for years and years.

It’s a good memory and thank you for bringing it back to me.

Great interview, Sheri. Nice meeting your friend, but like I needed those tempting Nordy Bars??? Although now that I think about it, I do just happen to have some butterscotch chips leftover from when I was going to make a 5 minute Fudge Wreath. Hmmm.
