Favorite Way to Celebrate Your Birthday CONTEST!
It has been a very fun week, because every time the mailman comes, he brings something cool. About a month ago, Laura (who, frankly, is now in my “best friend” category. No, we’ve never met. Why?) pointed out to people on the Loopy Groupie board that I had a birthday coming up in a month, and wouldn’t it be fun if people knit me socks? Well, that just
about blew my socks off stunned me. I can’t believe people would knit me socks of any kind for my birthday! And then someone suggested that mini socks would be fun, too. (I love mini socks.) So the mailman has been very very good to me this week and you all are just amazing. I’ll show you more photos next week. (And besides socks, I have gotten other fun stuff, too – whee! I’m going to start having two birthdays a year, I think. Although, wait – that would age me twice as fast. Never mind.) Here is a photo of some of the mini socks that have arrived. Aren’t they cute? I think everyone needs a lineup of mini socks. At one time I thought it would be fun to knit a bunch for the mini sock blocker keychains and hang them on my knitting bag. (I have two on there. One knit by me and one knit by my friend Valerie. I still think it would be fun to have more.) Someone once told me that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock to go with each pair of gift socks that they make. Another person said that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock for themselves for every sock yarn they knit up into socks. All cute ideas! (The framed display board? LOVE these. I have a bunch of them. They look especially great when you line three of them up over your couch with family photos on them. This one is in my office . I also think it’d be good to have one in your knitting room with swatches or project ideas or patterns or knitting plans on it. They’re from Creative Memories and if you type in your zipcode, you can find yourself a consultant near you and order online.)
So tomorrow is my birthday, and I’m taking the day off. (Of course The Elves will be here working on all of your orders.) Besides eating out, my day will include a little shopping, a little chocolate, and a big Venti. Plus time with WH and KD. (Sadly, not College Guy. But I do get to see him later this weekend – yay!) The February Blog Contest Question of the Month is: What is your favorite way to spend your birthday? Leave your answers in the comments below and I’ll draw a name next Wednesday to pick a winner. What is the prize? Something very fun, not yet offered here at The Loopy Ewe because we’ve only received a few of them so far. Aren’t you curious?

Favorite way to spend my birthday – also not working (good choice there Sheri!). I think it would be hiking/sitting on the side of the mountains at Shennandoah National Park. We’re not in great shape, but hiking small hikes is something my family started doing and it is a good way to spend the day together away from phones, tv, etc.
Have a great birthday Sheri!

For the past few years on my birthday my husband makes a special dinner for me and 5 of my friends. Known as “The Girl Birthday Dinner”, I get to choose the menu, the wine, the guests (of course) and we are all served by my DH and a friend of his. We end up with a Princess Cake and it’s a fabulous tradition, my absolute favorite gift.

Sleep in late, (no work, that’s a GIVEN) and ideally, spend time with my sister (who comes from out of state for the “big” birthdays), then a great dinner out, stay up late for a movie, and collapse in bed knowing I do NOT have to get up the next morning for work either
Happy Birthday (that’s, uh, 29 so far, right?)

Since my birthday falls around Memorial Day, my favorite way to spend it is with my family at a cook-out. Hamburgers or hotdogs, it doesn’t matter, just so long as I’m surrounded by my family and friends.

Definitely not working. My favorite birthdays in recent years involve a little overnight trip down to Monterey, sometimes to go to the Aquarium. I love the otters! We start the day with pastry and silly hats and the whole family in the ‘Birthday Bed,’ and then go from there. There is always a nice dinner out (including dessert!) and usually a walk on the beach…
Happy Birthday, Sheri!!

My favorite way to spend my birthday (for now, anyway) would be to go shopping with my closest friends while someone else watches all the kids. Then a family dinner at Cracker Barrel or another “home-cooking” restaurant would be nice. Last I would love to get to come home and watch a movie without interuption before going to bed. There might be some knitting in there, there might not be.
Happy Birthday to you:)

I was admiring the little socks when I saw the cupcake magnet! hehe Isn’t it cute?! I knew you’d like it and I figured you’d get a lot of edible treats so you needed a non-edible treat too.
Happy Birthday tomorrow! Have a wonderful relaxing Day, Sheri!
Hm, my favorite way to spend my birthday honestly, is just being able t o sleep in!

I do two things to “celebrate my birthday”.
The first is that I almost always take the day off to enjoy myself. I treat myself to a fun lunch and a good dinner (typically my partner asks me what I want and he makes it). I do stuff that “pamper” me, like take a bubble bath, curl up with a favorite book and reread it, or with my knitting and watch a favorite film. My birthday is, well, all about me and doing stuff that I enjoy and want to do.
The second thing I do is to do something really special on the following day, because my partner’s birthday is two days after mine. We usually go out and have a really awesome dinner at a great restaurant. We celebrate our birthdays together. The following day, his birthday, I would do something for him. It’s like having a three-day funfest every year. Hee hee!

Happy birthday, Sheri! I generally lurk but I do believe birthdays deserve celebrations. (A friend of mine always says, “I’m so glad your parents had sex!”). My favorite way to celebrate my birthday isn’t particularly original . . . take the day off work, sleep in, take myself out to lunch with a good book, knit, read, go out to dinner with my family. But the key element is NO LISTS. I run my life by lists, and love them, but my birthday (and usually Sundays) should contain no have-tos.
Bonnie
p.s. I just bought a winder and swift at Stitches West, and they will change my life. The Dream in Color Smooshy (butter peeps) wound up in about 3 minutes as opposed to over an hour by hand!

My favorite way to spend my birthday is to get a pedicure, my favorite coffee from Starbucks, hit the bookstore, my favorite French place for lunch, do some knitting and end the day with a fun dinner with family and a birthday cake:) I guess, in a nutshell, I just use my birthday as an excuse to do all of my very favorite things!!

You still have the mini sock I made on your knitting bag? I’m so pleased! I love those little socks and carry mine around everywhere, too. I guess I’ll have to pay more attention to the Ravelry board, because I missed the part about your birthday, so maybe you’ll have to consider that old sock as my extremely early birthday present for you. Hope you have a wonderful birthday, doing all your favourite things.
I guess for me my favourite birthday would have to involve having a whole day without teaching or cooking. Those could be replaced with knitting and hiking (it would be nice if a package of yarn arrived in the mail, too). But this year my big present is going to the Spring Fling, so that is the most exciting birthday present I’ll have had in a long time.

Happy Birthday Sheri!!! May you enjoy your special day, fellow Pieces!! : )
Well, considering I just celebrating my birthday on Sunday, I would say the way I spent it was just about perfect for me. I didn’t have to work, I was able to sleep in, and then I spent the rest of the day with someone who is very special to me… And, I also talked to family and friends who wanted to wish me well and I enjoyed that too. Finally, I was able to wind down by doing a little knitting and then some reading. All in all, a wonderful birthday…oh, and I got a Snoopy card from my special someone because he knows no matter how many years continue to pass, I still “heart” Snoopy cards for all occasions. : )

H.B. Sheri!!!
I would like to spend all of my bithdays at Disney World. Alas, that is not to be. So, I would spend about 2 hours in my favorite bookstore and then take myself out to a great lunch…some really super sandwich place.
Then, have some chocolate in the afternoon and troll at the LYS (we are lucky to have 3 in the area). Of course, I would have to buy some yarn…
Sounds great…maybe I shouldn’t wait until my BD. Hee Hee Hee

First, I want to sleep late but hell would have to freeze over, so I am content with my small child making me breakfast.
I have a friend who works in the makeup department at one of the hoity-toity department stores. So, after a leisurely morning doing nothing more strenuous than taking a bath, I go have lunch with friends and then we all get “done up”. Dinner must be (I know you hate it, but YUM!) at my favorite sushi bar.
There is also the traditional late arrival of my husband who, despite having known me a dozen years, cannot seem to get any kind of present arrangements taken care of until approximately and hour before he needs them. Fortunately, he’s decided that Tiffany & Co is his favorite store for last minute shopping!

My birthday is in late October, and my sister usually comes from Sacramento for my birthday week. We go to Salem, MA, for the day–a place we both love, particularly at Halloween (our favorite holiday)! This past year, we went to see “Wicked”, which was conveniently playing in Boston that evening. It was a perfect birthday treat!

My favorite way to spend my birthday is pretty simple. With my family. Every year my birthday wish is the same- but kinda long- I wish not to have to cook dinner or clean up afterwards (unless it’s to make a trip to the trash!) and not to have dinner with my in-laws. Let’s just say it’s a long story, but my husband comes through for me every year!
Hope you have a great day Sheri! (sending big imaginary Loopy hugs your way)

Hmmmm – that’s a no brainer:
1 – sleep in
2 – shower
3 – go knit at my favorite LYS for most of the day
4 – Go get a massage & facial
5 – Go out to dinner with DH
HAVE A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY, SHERI! You deserve to relax and enjoy your family after the recent Sneakups & DIC orders.

My favorite way to spend my birthday is either a short day trip someplace to hike or go crawl around in a cave or to have a leisurely day with nothing in particular to do – some knitting, hanging out with my best friend drinking coffee or tea, a good dinner of Thai food or something else tasty. That sounds about perfect.

HAPPY HAPPY B-Day!
My favorite way to spend my b-day (and my family will attest to this) is extend it to the ENTIRE WEEK! I am a child about my b-days! So, that said: NO work is a given on ‘the’ day. Then my DH, who God love him puts up with this plan of mine gives me a gift or more if I’ve been very good. Then we ‘bum’ around playing tourist in St. Louis. We did the Orchid show this yr at the Botanical Gardens–what a boost as I’m a Feb. b-day, too. Then DH surprised me and took me out to Giovanni’s on the Hill for a ‘fancy’ night out–just the two of us. Very romantic b-day! Sorry, no knitting was included in this b-day………am I automatically tossed out because of this? Be safe and happy!

But on the actual day I work on whatever projects I want, guilt free, and usually make my favorite fudge cake-even though my wonderful husband brings home a decadent dessert from our favorite French bakery. He fixes a special birthday dinner and we open a great bottle of wine to go with it all!

Kim’s Birthday pattern
Find the most high maintenance yarn (yes, I can at least admit to myself what type of yarn I am).
Yardage: about 5ft 6, although I always wanted to be 5 ft 8
Needles: your most expensive petite sized needles (I wish)
Cast on 36 years
NO ribbing is required for this pattern as all boring work is not allowed to happen on this day.
Jump right into the fun and start with some Brioche stitch for breakfast (definition: eat a yummy calorie loaded breakfast)
Then move into the favorite Cable pattern of your choice (definition: drive your hubby bonkers shopping all over town in all the good stores and yarn stores)
Next is Moss Stitch (definition: pretend you really are 5ft 8 and Kate Moss, parading all the cute new outfits you’d like hubby to buy)
You may need to add some short rows next for the waist expansion that may take place while eating tons of yummy food for lunch. (Is there a brie stitch? If so, this would be the place for it)
Now begin to knit in stockinette stitch (definition: time for movie watching with the family, make sure that you don’t drop your yarn into the popcorn)
More short rows may be needed as you decided to eat even more good food at the fanciest restaurant in town.
Is there a tiramisu stitch? If not, someone needs to create one. That being the case this would be the time for some freeform knitting to represent the delicious deserts you will be scoffing down.
Next, time to cast off and weave in any loose ends. Look over your knitting fabric and evaluate what a wonderful day/life/knitted object you have in your hands.
Sweet dreams.

Right now I am plotting how I can get to Rome for my 31st bday, which is in a couple of weeks, and spend all day sitting at a cafe by the Pantheon in the Piazza della Rotunda, drinking wine and people watching.

My favorite way to spend my July birthday is by the water. At the beach, out on a boat, just gimme water and heat! If it’s a pontoon boat, maybe with a little knitting and a little cocktail (as long as I’m not driving). I’ll second the sleeping in that others have mentioned. Oh, and just for once, I’d like my OWN cake. My brother’s b-day is 2 days and 3 years after mine, and even at 40-something, we still end up sharing a cake.

My in-laws took our kids out to a lovely concert that they totally enjoyed, and gave me a gift certificate to a great LYS that just doubled its space. I enjoy a birthday, but sometimes I don’t enjoy the fuss of attention at a party. One favourite thing to do is to invite a group of friends over for dinner and have a fun evening with fun people. I don’t tell them it’s my birthday, so my own aversion to attention is satisfied, but I still get a good party.
That doesn’t work anymore. My kids are old enough to blab to anyone that it’s my birthday. I won’t be having any stealth parties for a few more years yet.

Happy Birthday, Sheri! I just celebrated my birthday two weeks ago and have a new favorite way of celebrating my birthday. Since I moved to Colorado a few months ago, I thought a Colorado-style birthday celebration was in order. A friend and I hopped in the car and drove to Mt. Evans (the home of the world’s highest paved road), strapped on our snowshoes and went for a 5-mile hike. There were moments when I wasn’t sure I’d survive past my 35th birthday (narrow pathways with steep dropoffs…yikes!), but it was an amazing, absolutely gorgeous day. I finished the day off with a well-deserved birthday meal with my little sis and brother-in-law at The Teahouse in Boulder. Yum!

For those of you who don’t live here, Mendocino is on the Northern Coast of California, very dramatic coastline. Huge rocks and cliffs with waves crashing everywhere. This time of year the whales are migrating and there is a Whale Festival going on that weekend. Mendocino village hasn’t changed since the 50’s or 60’s and there are lots of B&B’s, restaurants, galleries, pubs and fun shops. The favorite way to spend my birthday? Why, the same way I’ve tried to spend it for at least the last ten years! I meet up with one sister plus one “adopted” sister who happens to enjoy the very same things we do, and we have a “Play Day”! We bring sewing & knitting projects, spend part of the day doing those things we love to do so much; visit one or two ’special favorite’ stores (knitting, fabric, and craft shops), and have lunch at a nice restaurant, or else have a pot-luck at one of our homes. Presents are shared afterwards, and invariably, even thought the three birthdays are in March and two in September, there are gifts for everyone (although the birthday girl(s) have the best presents). We’re always surprised by how fast the day goes by, and hate for it to end, so we also do the same thing at Christmas, plus just regular play-days when we can arrange the schedules. By the way, our ages range from 51-71, and I’m in the middle.

We bring sewing & knitting projects, spend part of the day doing those things we love to do so much; visit one or two special favorite stores (knitting, fabric, and craft shops), and have lunch at a nice restaurant, or else have a pot-luck at one of our homes. Presents are shared afterwards, and invariably, even though the three birthdays are in March and two in September, there are gifts for everyone (although the birthday girl(s) have the best presents). We’re always surprised by how fast the day goes by, and hate for it to end, so we also do the same thing at Christmas, plus just regular play-days when we can arrange the schedules. By the way, our ages range from 51-71, and I’m in the middle.

In the canoe (birthday in May, so hopefully ok weather), and with my family. Oh, and my MIL’s famous Hershey’s chocolate cake – made with buttermilk! And if I lived closer to a Starbuck’s – well, a venti carmel macchiato! And knitting – did I mention that? Knitting with Fiesta or Wollmeise!
Happy Birthday Sheri! Enjoy your day off!

I try to take the day off too. Since the kids are usually in school, this is one day of the year that I can do something fibery by myself. In previous years I have warped the loom, washed a fleece, and had a dye day. However I’ve also spent the day just knitting and vegging out in front of the TV with a good movie. Hubby makes me whatever I want for dinner and an angel food cake for desert.

Favourite way to spend my birthday (which is on MONDAY, yay!) is to take the day off work, get a massage, then laze around doing all the things I love to do, like visit a couple of yarn stores and a book store, eat an orange scone from Bread Co for breakfast, and have no obligations whatsoever!
My cats won’t let me sleep past 7:30, but since I’m usually in work for 7am, that’s a decent sleep-in. The little 12 pounder starts doing his “I’m so cute and I’m really hungry, please wake up and feed me” routine with a vengeance around half seven..

Hmm…favorite way to spend my birthday. I definitely get to sleep in and snuggle with my DH. Then a Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha and a muffin to wake up. Knitting on the deck with a warm sweater wrapped around me and a blanket thrown over my legs, sunshine beaming down, and the laptop playing an audio book.
Dinner at my parents with my family and closest friends. Lasagna and homemade cheesecake for dessert (my favorites). Sitting in front of the fireplace and knitting late into the night.

I have my favorite fish restaurant in Bodega Bay on the Northern California coast that we go to every year. We start with cocktails in the bar, and then to dinner, always a window seat so we can watch the sun go down and also see the seals swimming by, the Seaguls and other water birds. Last year, due to family obliagations I didn’t get to go, but we made up for it on Thanksgiving! Fish dinner at the Tides in Bodega Bay on Thanksgiving, my favorite!

My favorite birthday would be to sleep a bit late then go shopping (my kids can come if they are good) and have no trouble finding the right size. Then have a nice lunch, maybe more shopping and a movie after and dinner at PF Changs, or Ruths Chris Steakhouse. (PF Changs would be more in the budget though after all the shopping! lol)

Happy Birthday Sheri. Hope you have a great one. We are four knitters who celebrate our birthdays by taking the Birthday girl out to lunch and giving gifts and then we go to Barnes & Noble to knit and have Starbucks. Today we celerbrated Carin’s birthday, same day as yours. We all had a great time. The gifts are always knitting related. We have been doing this for years.

My all-time favorite way to spend my birthday began with my third birthday – and it’s documented in black and white photography. I dearly love to ride carousels. There I am in a navy pleated skirt and suit jacket, with saddle shoes and a red vinyl shoulder bag. (PLEASE, Mother! My birthday is in August, in SE Iowa. It’s in the 90’s!)
More casual dress will happen now, but I still love me a birthday horsey ride!

My birthday is just after the Christmas holidays (January 9th) and as such tends to get sort of lost in the post-holiday doldrums. Usually I end up sleeping late, doing whatever I like all day (definitely not working if I can help it) and chatting on the phone with distant family and friends. A PERFECT birthday would involve a lot more, like maybe being whisked off to a surprise location for dinner and a show or something, but I’m not complaining. Most of the time, the celebration gets drawn out over several days so that I can go to dinner with different groups of friends or whatever.
And no birthday would be complete without some sort of chocolate cake!
This year it was a Great Wall of Chocolate shared with my Wild Women group (great gals all) at PF Chang’s.

My idea of a great birthday doesn’t include school, and luckily for me my birthday is always during spring break
I think this year going on a hike and taking a nice long stop somewhere along the way for a knitting break would be awesome… and then coming home to knit some more, watch Killer Klowns from Outer Space (best movie ever…), opening presents (preferably yarn) and eating cake (or pie). And perhaps buying myself a birthday present from TLE a few days in advance so it might show up on my birthday
Whatever you do, I hope you have an awesome birthday. You deserve it

Happy Birthday! My best birthday ever was last year: I spent it in an all-day class called Magical Knitting, taught by Annemor Sundbo. Last year, I was in England the day before my birthday. I was flying home that day, and wouldn’t be home until the evening. I went to bed that night way jet-lagged and tired. In the morning, people showed up at my house! My mom had invited a bunch of my friends over for pancakes. It was really sweet and adorable.
But in general, I like to have a lot of people around to appreciate me like I deserve (=D), and eat cake. Or pancakes. And movies are good. And I like to build a fire (my birthday’s right before Christmas), and open presents all day, and maybe go out to eat.
Anyway, happy birthday Sheri. ^_^ Have a fabulous day.

I love the mini key changes and gave one out to each girl friend at last years Girls Beach Weekend. In eanch frineds favor colors.

My favorite way to spend my birthday would be breakfast in bed in a clean house (that I didn’t have to clean), followed by complete quiet time outside in the sun to knit, read, or spin. Lunch would be something like an Ahi Tuna salad delivered to me on the patio with a large margarita. Then more quiet time to do whatever I wanted while sipping margaritas. Dinner would be at my favorite restaurant surrounded by my family and friends and a decadent cake.
Maybe I should email that to my husband so he knows what to get me for my perfect birthday?

The kids know that it is mom’s day so I get to veto movie choices for the day. Yummy food eaten at home is a plus, that way I can spend the whole day in sweats.

My favorite way to spend a birthday would be to sleep in a bit, but not too late (I don’t want to miss any of my special day!). I would spend the whole day reading and knitting, perhaps somewhere outside if the weather is good (my birthday is in May). I would have dinner with my honey, and of course he would bring me flowers! A lot of people complain about getting older. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago at the age of 38, and only 4 years after watching my sister die from breast cancer at the age of 33. So, my birthday usually starts out with being thankful for continuing to be here and reflecting on the things I have still been here to be a part of and watching my girls grow into fine young ladies. My hubby and girls always make me dinner of my choice and I get to do whatever I want. No matter how old I get, I will always be glad to still be a breast cancer survivor.

That being said, I just love seeing what thoughtful things my family will do for me. “Put down that dish, it’s your birthday!” “Let ME make Mom a cup of tea, it’s her birthday!”
And, of course, the wonderful yarn story my daughter created (with help from the Loopy Ewe) that I talked about on Ravelry.

My favourite way is healthy (when I was little I always seemed to be sick on my birthday – flu, strep throat, pink eye… you name I had it on my birthday) and with cinnamon flavoured candies. Being at the beginning of Feb. meant that -again when I was little- the Valentine’s candy was just out then and so I associate happy birthday’s with chocolate and cinnamon hearts (of the hard and the chewy varieties). [I also find this association makes Valentines day easier to cope with, being, as I am, cronically single.]

That morning we wandered around Coney Island and went to the aquarium where we played with a walrus (seriously, they are the best animals ever).
How can you have a better food based birthday than a corn dog in Coney Island and burgers and cheesefries at a ball park. And since it was my 21st, buying a 10$ beer for the first time.
And no, I don’t remember who won. That’s how much fun it was. (Hopefully there will be baseball this year as well!)

Happy Birthday Sheri! I hope you have fun and I’m glad you’re taking the day off – you deserve it!!!!
My favorite way to spend a birthday is to take the day off from work(if at all possible).
I’m spoiled though – my birthday is October 11, so I was conditioned early on not to have to do anything for my birhday because of Columbus Day.

Have a wonderfully Happy Birthday, Sheri!
I have never had my birthday off, unless it happened to fall on the weekend, whether I was in school, working, or being Mom of 3 very active sons. Nowadays, my birthday does not usually get much of a celebration. If I’m lucky, we get to go to a good Tex-Mex restaurant for dinner with my family. And, as of late, of course I would like to knit and spend some time on Ravelry!
When I was growing up, my favorite way to celebrate my birthday was to have dinner at the great steakhouse, with a wonderful steak and little loaves of homemade bread, with fabulous orange butter, yum! And, since it was my birthday, they brought a little cake to the table.
Again, have a great birthday, Sheri, and many happy returns!

Hi Sheri, have a super birthday tomorrow, sounds just the way I would like to spend mine as well!! Doesn’t being self-employed have its privileges sometimes!!!
I would have to add though, that dinner would be at the Olive Garden, we don’t have them in Canada anymore, but the border is only 45mins away!!!
Have fun!!

I have a whole bunch of those little socks already made up. I went through one of those frenzies at one point and just wanted to use up a lot of my left over sock yarn. I gave them away to friends and most use them for keychains or to stick some lip gloss or a chapstick in it.
Now for the birthday? A nice sit down dinner with my three boys (incl. DH) is always welcome, especially if all of them behave good enough to were I can go back to the same place again later.
Happt Birthday.

Favourite way to spend a birthday – knitting of course! But that’s a given….I usually end up spending a large part of my birthday on the phone, cause my family is scattered around the country. If I can do something with my nieces, it’s always a good birthday because they are at the age when birthdays are hugely anticipated and extremely exciting, and it’s fun to have that rub off on me a bit…

My birthday’s in August so I try to take the day and bicycle to the beach, but I had to work last year (pout). My favorite birthday ritual though lasts three days because I bake myself fabulous chocolate cake from a family recipe the night before, enjoy some after dinner on the actual day, and eat it for breakfast the day after!

My favorite way to spend my birthday would be just a day home to do whatever I want. Nothing I needed to do. My other favorite way to spend it is to see a great musical. This year it was Sweeney Todd. Previous years have been The Producers, Cats and Starlight Express. This year I got to do both. My birthday was a Saturday so no work and I saw Sweeney Todd earlier in the week so I was extra lucky.

Happy Happy Birthday! My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is dinner at home with my DH and 3 kiddos followed by some truly insane dessert. This year I’m hoping for Gino’s East pizza and molten chocolate lava cakes — oh my! As for the rest of the day, I just like to kick back, read and/or knit, surf the web. My favorite way to spend my birthday is buying yarn! One of the local yarn shops has its sale every year for a week or two that usually overlaps my birthday so I go and buy yarn on my birthday. In my quilting days the bigger quilt shop I used to buy fabric at (not just for quilting) used to do a birthday discount on your birthday so I used to go there. But that was in the days before I really picked knitting back up much. Naturally I always take the day off work. That makes the shopping so much more fun somehow.
I hope you have a very Happy Birthday, Sheri.

I experienced the best way to celebrate a birthday the year before last. Some friends called me on my cell and told me to pack a bathing suite, some warm clothes and be ready in an hour. We went to a friends cabin on an island in the archipelago, bathed and went on boat rides all day, and had a barbecue at night, before everybody fell asleep. The sea is tiring, but oh so nice!

Because I am a teacher and my birthday is July 19th, I usually spend my birthday alone. I sleep in, brew some good coffee and take a bath with a good book. I try to get my haircut, a pedicure or some type of grooming/pampering that can be afforded…. I spend some time at the book store, local yarn shop and try not to think about time and what I “should” be doing (actually a tough concept)! I usually try to catch up with a friend for lunch or knitting. My husband comes home from work and we usually do something fun for dinner. A day for self-indulgence!

Favorite way to celebrate birthday? I have to say that I’ve been so busy with grad school and work and kids the last few birthdays that I don’t think I even celebrated! So sad. But school is over and things are much calmer now…I have time and mental space to be creative!
But if I was going to design a day it would involve yarn and knitting, coffee and wine OR beer, spending time with favespouse and the kids, and hopefully with some knitbuds as well. And I would WEAR my handknits out to dinner!

Then lunch with the hubby…either a taco salad or avacado BLT, eaten outdoors, with iced tea. A nice nap in a hammock, some crossword puzzle time. Dinner and evening with the kids. Since my Bday is in May, I like to wander around in the spring air in a boutiquy part of town, which ever town I may be living in or close to, and do a bit of luxury shopping for myself. – Wake up in Rome, Italy
– Have croissants and cafe au lait at a sidewalk cafe
– Walk through quaint streets in search of Trevi Fountain
– Stop and buy Gelato from a street vendor
– Take wild taxi ride just to see if what they say is true about taxis in Rome
– Stop and buy Gelato from another street vendor
– Climb the Spanish Steps
– Stroll through beautiful gardens back to hotel
– Go to dinner and get a surprise Chocolate Rum cake for dessert

My favourite way to celebrate my birthday is to actually make it into a week long celebration entitled “The Festival of Pam”. It didn’t develop from hubris I promise! It evolved from needing separate time to be with various family and friends that were only available at certain times. So it usually involves a family dinner with traditional birthday cake, a day spent entirely in pajamas, a get-together at a friends house, etc. Its a fantastic way to do it folks!

I am a february baby too! Feb. 2nd I celebrated a “big” birthday, and it was my favorite way (so far) that I have spent my day … my husband and I went to the Dominican Republic the day before “the Big Day”, and the next morning we went swimming in the warm part of the Atlantic Ocean, sightseeing, beachcombing, bartering with beach vendors, hugging palm trees, eating fantastic food, sipping magaritas and enjoying each other’s company until the wee small hours! It was a great day, and a painless way to enter a big year … I’d recommend it to anyone turning 40!

Gee I waited this morning for you to post your blog, got into doing classwork and forgot the time. Sorry. I so wanted to be the first to wish you happy Bday tomorrow.
Happy, happy birthday SHeri. I am so glad you are making a fabulous day of your birthday. I am glad that you are actually getting personal deliveries instead of just orders, something just for you. I hope the PO was a good boy and delivered all your presents on time. It must be amusing to watch the postman try to get all the packages stuffed in his truck so he wont have to make a second run. He should be glad it is all non breakable stuff for the most part.
I am glad WH and KD are able to spend your day with you, too bad CG cant also be there but if he gets to be seen on the weekend then you get to sneak in a second Bday. Just lovely. O my DD#2, our fashion Diva sends her Bday wishes from one pices to another hers is on March 20. I wasnt even thinking, no wonder you are so fabulous.
How I spend my birthday, well i try not to, I just dont like a fuss being made over me, I like to fuss over others instead. BUt with 3 DD aged 16-20 there is no way I can get away with such a thing anymore.
My adopted twin sisters take me out to Bingo the night before, I am no diehard fan of Bingo, but they like it so much, I dont want to spoil their fun. THey always tease me because i have my knitting with me everytime.
THen I like to get up bright and early, it is June 20 last day of spring, greet the sun. Normally I have my garden started, so I start the drip irrigation, weed a little, chase the little chicks around the yard, chase the cat back into the house. depending on the weather I may plant some flowers or more plants and just enjoy the weather.
I have my favorite ben and jerrys or some other expensive ice cream for lunch.
I love to cook so for me it is a treat to go all out and cook: Pilaw with chicken, meat with an almond sauce, salad, samosas (potatoe and peas filled fried pockets) and for desert a yummy self baked cheesecake as fancy as i can make it. WHoever comes over gets to eat with us, I cook alot.
Then I just want to curl up in bed put the TV on, or if our living room ever gets finished with the remodeling I will do this on the couch, watch all the shows i like and knit away until bedtime. a beautiful day.
loveya

Sherri,
Well, let’s see…I am a single mom of 11 and 13 year old girls and I own my own small printing company, so my most fantastic birthday has to be sleeping in and having a wonderful breakfast made by my wonderful daughters (who doesn’t like a little chocolate on their cereal).
Then on to work (down the hall from my bedroom) and hopefully I have lots of new orders to work on. At lunch, my sister takes me out for shrimp and chocolate cake. Doesn’t matter where as long as the menu is right!!
The kids have NO WHERE TO GO AFTER SCHOOL (total fantasy realm, now) and we have a relaxing dinner at home. They tell me they are tired by 7 and I get to knit the evening away on socks from yarn fresh out of the priority mail box from The Loopy Ewe!! Along with my wonderful note from Sherri in every box!! This is my plan on September 13, 2008 when I get to be 40 for the first time!!!!

Have a happy birthday!
My favourite way to celebrate mine involves not going to work or school (so quite often I don’t get to celebrate it the way I’d like to). I like to sleep late, but for me this usually means 8 or 8:30am so I don’t sleep away the whole day. I like to have a fairly quiet day, spending time reading and crafting – now it would be knitting, but I haven’t had a chance to spend my birthday this way since I started – and maybe going for a hike if the weather is nice. My birthday is in March, so sometimes it’s a beautiful spring day and other times it’s slushy and ugly. Then I have dinner with my family (both of my parents are good cooks) and spend the evening playing Scrabble or crokinole and listening to music.
For the past few years I’ve been away at university on my actual birthday, so I celebrate it later when I get home.

Happy Birthday! My birthday falls around Thanksgiving, so it’s easy to start with the things I’d rather not do, like eat mince pie or turkey meat that’s overdried from reheating, but there are definitely lots of favorite ways to celebrate! First, we have a great birthday breakfast waffle tradition in my family — waffles from scratch with real maple syrup and/or berries and whipped cream. Gotta love that. Then there’s the year my boyfriend took me out to dinner at D’Amico Cucina in Minneapolis — WOW! On the crazy side, I do a lot of canine agility, and there’s often a trial in the Twin Cities area over Thanksgiving weekend, so sometimes I get to play agility with my dog on my birthday. I guess the perfect birthday would be waffles from scratch for breakfast, followed by canine agility, followed by dinner at D’Amico Cucina. Would you call that a birthday trifecta? Maybe 2008 will be the year . . .

Favorite way to spend my birthday – a trip to a fabulous local nursery to pick up pansies, snapdragons and sweet peas for the garden, picking daffodils from my flowerbeds and eating Mom’s homemade angel food cake (white with chocolate frosting) And knitting on socks of course! Have a great birthday Sheri!

My birthday is in October. I just turned 30 last year and really, I treat my birthday like it’s any other day.
I do ask for things though because I have to have new yarn! LOL Mostly I ask for a clean home that day (and that I don’t have to do it), that I get some $ for my knitting habit and go to a yarn shop. The rest of the day is spent just like any other.
Birthday’s are just another day for us (my husband and I). We don’t “feel” older therefore we don’t celebrate something that “makes” us older! Ha!
I personally love just getting homemade cards from the kids, hugs and kisses and birthday wishes from everyone. Really, that makes my day! My Week! Knowing I will get those things all on that day!
Happy Birthday to you!

My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is to take the day off, spend some time doing needlework or reading, going to lunch by myself, and having dinner out with family. A good long phone call from my parents also helps
.
Though after a few years where my birthday itself was a so-so day or where I wasn’t able to celebrate on the day itself, I decided to declare Birthdaytide. Whatever age I’m turning, Birthdaytide lasts that many days, centered on my birthday. So I have a few weeks where I can do birthday-related things and fit in all the celebration (and special yarn orders) I want

Happy Birthday Sheri!
My favourite way to spend my bday, since it’s 31 Oct, is to have a nice quiet evening at home away from the sugar, the parade in the Village (i live in nyc), and all the other fun & wackiness. I also allow myself to cook whatever *I* want to eat and my husband (the picky eater) must either partake or fend for himself. i also sort of treat myself a few weeks later.. I am preemie, and spent 98 days in the nicu .. the day i came home is the husband’s bday and what i consider when i should have been born (close enough)… we try to enjoy that day too… no big parties or anything, just quiet meals at home. he gets to choose the meal that night though.
Maybe one year we’ll remember to request our bday’s off …

Well First of all Happy Birthday!!!!!!!! Enjoy your day off.
My perfect Birthday would start with being able to sleep in.
The day woudl be sunny and cool which is possible since I have a spring B-day.
I would not have to cook or clean and my kids woudl not argue with each other for the entire day(that will never happen)
A nice dinner out with my hubby and kids and maybe a movie with just hubby afterwards.
Oh and I would need a nap in the day somewhere, I am a firm believer in naps.
And some knitting time too, of course. And a big fat gift certificate to the loopy ewe.
I think that would be a fantabulous birthday.
Have a great day Sheri

If we can’t be with my family, I want to spend it with “my guys” and go out to dinner.

Happy Birthday in two hours and 38 minutes from Virginia. My favorite birthday would start with working out at Curves with my two daughters, one daughter-in-law and one old enough grandaughter. Then all of us going for pedicures and manicures, my treat. The getting a latte or something of choice from Starbucks and heading to all the local yarn and fiber shops for a day of filling our senses with colors for our eyes, soft touch for our fingers and a wonderful class to stimulate and excite our brain. Then everyone goes home and I spend the rest of the evening with my wonderful husband wrapped in my favorite afghan.

Happy birthday, Sheri! I just had a birthday on Monday. I know more people who have birthdays in February than in any other month.
The Perfect Birthday:
Sleep until I awake on my own.
Walk the dog on a crisp but sunny morning.
Have a “girls only” luncheon and then stitch with all my good stitchin’ friends from all over.
Get a manicure and/or massage in the afternoon.
Have dinner out with my husband.
Go home to enjoy the red velvet cake he made me.
And then snuggle up in bed together.
My wonderful husband DOES made me a red velvet cake every year!

The family and I would hike up to one of the beautiful lakes, have a picnic lunch, try to spot some wildlife, and take a leisurely hike back down. Nice dinner, nice wine, chocolate, and maybe a little knitting in there somewhere, too
Gifts should include fine jewelry and fine yarn, too, of course!

Happy birthday (one day early) Sheri! Dang, if I had known people were making mini socks too, I would have joined in (otherwise, I would have needed like 2 months lead time to finish a pair of socks, I knit them slowly and only while on metro). For my birthday, I usually go to a fancy restaurant with my husband and he bakes me a pie. And um… that’s about it. Pretty boring eh? Oh, and my parents always send me a fruit basket–like the kind you send people at Christmas, with preserved meats and crackers and stuff (not really sure why, but that’s what they send).

Favorite way to spend MY birthday – Last year was one of those BIG birthdays for me, and it was a favorite : – travelled to Sydney (from Melbourne) stayed with my family at a lavish 5 star hotel overlooking the Harbour Bridge. Waking up to breakfast in bed, then climbing over the top of the Bridge with spectacular views. We then ventured out to check out the local patchwork, yarn and craft stores. Fantastic dinner just near the Sydney Opera House. Ooh to do that again!! Maybe the next BIG birthday?

My favourite way to spend my birthday for the past few years has been to go to Mexico. We go to the same place each year for two weeks for my birthday and some of the same people show up each time so it’s like a little reunion. The staff know us by name there now and are so welcoming. Lovely, warm, relaxing and pampering, away from everything. Of course, I take my knitting, and sleep in, relax in the sun or by the pool and carry my little knitting around with me everywhere. Those pool boys are fascinated with it… heehee. On my birthday night, we go out for a special dinner and “toast” our friends and family back home but it’s just the two of us for my birthday and it’s heaven. Have a very happy birthday.

1.a day of doing nothing … except what I wanted to do –
2.a day of having everything DONE for me – which has yet to happen since I was probably about five years old …
3.a day of peace, quite, and total calm …
4. a day that I would remember for the rest of my life!
and hope you have the same, if that’s what you want!

My birthday is Dec. 5. As I was adopted at 4 yrs old I, I was told to choose between celebrating my birthday or Christmas. Of course, Santa won. So as an adult with grown married daughters who do not live close, I celebrate by giving myself a birthday…cake, presents (knitting yarn, patterns, needles, etc!) and talking with the girls by phone. It was also the day I put up Christmas decorations when the children were still at home. If I am able, I continue this tradition and do not take them down until March 1st. And, yes, they are still up!!!!

I’m an April Fools baby, and was raised in the Philippines by my very Catholic family… which, courtesy of the Christian calendar, meant that every few years my birthday would fall on Good Friday! That’s a day of obligation at home… and a day of fasting. O_O Yup. No birthday cake. No _food._ It makes one really, REALLY appreciate a good meal.
So, honestly, my favourite way to spend my birthday is out with friends on the patio of a cozy little restaurant, enjoying a hopefully warm and nonrainy April night… no gifts, no alcohol, not knitting (!!!!) just ordering the finest thing on the menu without thinking about cost. ^_~ Just once a year!

My favorite way to spend my birthday is sleep until I wake up. Make myself a truly decadent breakfast. Relax and do whatever takes my fancy during the day. Dinner out at a favorite restaurant. Home to a nice long bubble bath with the husband and we talk about the past year and what our goals are for next year. Since my birthday is the 28th of December it’s nice to reflect back and plan forward.
However this past year…. got woken up by the husband to view an entire herd of deer in the backyard at dawn. Totally beat sleeping in and the rest of the day was fantastic too!

I really like birthdays but don’t like to go out for mine. My best birthdays have been spent with my 3 granddaughters and my family. I cook for them and, as my birthday is May 31, here in Illinois, it is sometimes the first really warm day of the Spring. We can sit outside and enjoy the flowers and watch the girls (6,5, & 4) play. My daughter and I enjoy some wine and the men watch the Cubs or White Sox or golf. I clean up (my choice) and collapse when they all leave. I feel priviledged to have them all share another year with me.

My favorite birthday was my 40th a few years ago. My then husband took me to FAirmont Hot Springs in Montana and got me a personal massage with sandlewood and vanilla aeromatherapy, then he surprised me with a tasy dinner of steak and crab in our room and then he decided that if I was gonna drink on my BDay, I was gonna have the best so they brought in a chilled bottle of VERY expensive champagne and served it to us in Fairmont cut crystal glasses that were ours to take home as a memory of our visit. Just when I thought I could take no more. In they came with a birthday cupcake all pink and sprinkles with a flaming candle on top and it was tiramisu !! MY FAv!! Afterwards they left and we watched a moive on the t.v. that he had brought with us as it was one of my most beloved and as I was preparing for bed, he opens the bathroom door and tells me that he hasn’t given me my gift yet. He hands me a bag and tells me to put it on. Well it was a hand crocheted bathing suit in baby blue and it was gorgeous and fit perfectly. I put it on and he has made arrangements with the staff to open the hot pools and sauna for only us as late as we like and we take the second bottle of bubbly to the springs and sit in them and just soak it in. WONDERFUL!!. When we returned to the room, he said that he thought the light was blinking on the phone . So i check and it is and I pick it up and press the number for messages. They tell me they would like me to come to the front office if it is possible. I said sure and wander over there only to have them hand me a wrapped gift box with red foil and an embossed kiss on it. I opened it to find a tennis bracelet in diamonds with 40 stones in it and a note from Dh saying that he treasured all the 40 years I had spent on this earth and asked me to marry him again and make it another 40 together. Life doesn’t get any better than that.. JoyB

On my “dream birthday”, I would head up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a wonderful drive along Lake Superior’s southern shoreline heading to the Keweenaw Peninsula. There’s a yarn store up in Lake Linden, Michigan that I would love to visit in person (Yarns and Threads) as I’ve visited their website and they have yarn I can’t find anywhere else! I’d stop along the way for a yummy pasty for my lunch and find a good sunny spot to try out my new yarn along the shoreline of the big lake.

Isn’t February a great month for birthdays? I just had mine, too! And it was pretty close to perfect, so I’ll use that. I got to sleep in, and then the girls and my husband delivered breakfast in bed (including, of course, a very hot cup of Peet’s coffee). Then I got up and had a leisurely morning before I was taken on a surprise trip to get a used sea kayak (I’ve SO been wanting one!). This was followed by lunch, and then we all headed home, where I knitted peacefully, and then got to take a nap. After that, we all went out to dinner at my favorite fancy restaurant, where the girls behaved beautifully (I tell you, it was a birthday miracle), and I got my presents from them, including a Loopy Ewe gift certificate (did I not say it was the perfect day)! Yup, I want that one again
Happy, happy birthday! Enjoy your day off with your family — you most definitely deserve it. (Also, on the two birthdays front, in our family, we celebrate “half-y birthdays” at the six-month mark — just a good dinner and cake and singing, but any celebration is a good thing in my book!)

My favorite way to spend a birthday is to stay at home doing whatever I want to do, with no responsibility for anything at all, and especially no dressing up to go out! I knit, read, play computer games, watch videos, and ignore the phone. A special treat — cupcakes! — is always welcome, but only if it comes to me — I ain’t goin’ out for it. Husband is free to cook, get take-out, or just declare that we’re eating cereal for dinner — doesn’t matter to me, as long as *I* don’t have to decide!

I like to spend my day doing things that I want to do just for me, that normally I might not do. I may sleep in a little, I may get an extra big latte at Starbucks, I may wander down to my local yarn store and buy something I want (not need). I have my favorite snack, my favorite dinner, my favorite dessert and then have the night off of putting the kids to bed. So pretty much it is a day where I get to be a little bit spoiled and indulgent. Oh and ideally it would include a big gift certificate to my LYS too.

I am going to say something here that won’t be taken well by most, but my fav way to spend my birthday is ALONE. You heard me. Alone. Knitting, sleeping, watching a movie, whatever, but alone. You see, I am a thanksgiving day baby. Go ahead and gobble, everyone else does. But in the hubbub of the holidays it is often forgotten. Or shared with a pumpkin pie. And my family is a bit dramatic (not about my birthday, just in general) so really, I like to be alone. On my own. Just me. Quietly doing what I want to do and eating a whole carton of ice cream if I want.

Happy brithday to you! My mom’s birthday was today; she turned 80 and is going strong! I took her to the movies to see Disney’s “Enchanted”
My favorite way to spend my birthday would depend a lot on the weather. But, if it cooperates, I would do as follows:
1. Sleep late (obviously I don’t have to work)
2. Have a leisurely breakfast of fresh scones and hot tea, while reading the paper and watching snow come down outside window.
3. Dress in favorite handknit sweater, socks, hat, scarf, etc.
3. Play with dogs outside in snow.
4. Go to LYS and indie bookshop.
5. Lunch at small bistro on main street, where I can watch the world go by outside the window.
6. Cross country ski.
7. Dinner with my husband, go for walk in woods and by the river.
8. Lay in the snow in a field after dark, look up at the sky, and let snowflakes land on our faces.
9. Watch a movie at home snuggled up on couch with hot chocolate and knitting.
10. Go to bed, having had a perfect day!

I would spend my birthday having breakfast with my whubby…then head to the LYS to purchase some goodies, come home & start knitting!! then out to dinner again with WHubby…last year I spent my birthday in Newport, Oregon hopping to the knitting stores, then out to the dock for a wonderful seafood lunch with my Hubby & nephew..it was wonderful.

I love to spend it OFF from work too! I like to go out to lunch with friends and maybe to a yarn store or two. Then I want to go to a movie by myself (or with friends) and have dinner with my family. I know it doesn’t seem like much – but for me it is very self-indulgent!! Spending time with family & friends is the best present.

Happy Birthday!
My favorite way to spend my birthday – a day off from work, sleeping late, then a Venti Toffee Nut Mocha, followed by some yarn shopping, and either a massage or pedicure. Then a nice dinner out, definitely involving chocolate, and a movie at home. Lights not turned completely off so I can knit!

I don’t want to pull any rank or something but the day after this drawing is my birthday…March 6 I’ll be 51. If I had my druthers, I’d get up at my usual time, the sun would be out, unusually warm for this time of year, a good stiff, warm breeze off the lake. Breakfast out, because…it’s my birthday. Take knitting and Ipod with and find some off the beaten path place to sit, knit and listen to some podcasts outside, getting a little color. Go have coffee with my 3 favorite girlfriends in the world ( Marianne, Martha, Tracey, Carmen, Ellie) ok – I know that’s 5.
Yikes – have to go home, take a shower, get gussied (what a gramma word – I am getting old) up and Mr. takes me to my favorite restaurant for dinner, something sparkly for a gift, and for dessert – Mr.!
If that isn’t a perfect day, I don’t know what is… Oh – winning the Loopy Ewe contest would be the perfect topper!!!!!!
Pick me…

My favorite way to spend my birthday (and what I ask for from my family every year as a present) is to have the day off. No cooking, no cleaning, no picking up. Just knitting, spinning, reading or whatever else I want to do.
And the best part–the usually give it to me!

Happy Birthday, Sheri!
My favorite way to spend my birthday definitely involves pampering! No working! I like to sleep in late followed by a leisurely breakfast. Then, the main event of the day is going to a local Aveda spa and getting some kind of spa package (facial, massage, mani/pedi, etc). I swear, I come out of there feeling like a queen! After that, in some order, there should be a Venti, chocolate, time spent knitting (of course), reading, and dinner with the hubby. Sigh. Maybe I’ll celebrate a bit early this year…. =)

I love a trip to the golf course. I ride around in the cart, watching my husband and son play golf, while I enjoy the weather (it’s in July!) and knit. I’m the only one who knits on our golf course! Then we do dinner. It’s always a fun afternoon and one of the few times all 3 of us take a break from our busy lives and enjoy each other.

I really enjoy spending my birthday quietly. I like having my kids help me blow out the candles on the cake, and having them “help” open my presents. To add to that fun, I’d love to be able to crawl into bed, and either curl up with a good book, or some delicious yarn, and just relax for a while.
Hope you have a wonderful day Sheri!

Poor baby! So many comments—- now that is probably not the best way to spend your birthday, reading and reading and reading!
I think the best way to spend a birthday is to make it a birth week to begin with. Much celebration! The day itself should be marked with a daybreak run to Starbucks and perhaps an everything bagel from Bread Co. Then a couple of alone time—- knitting, stitching, etc. Something creative. Then a trip to the movies marked by being able to choose whatever movie makes you happy and not feeling one bit badly if your movie partners do not care for your choice! The day needs to end with dinner out. My choice is without a doubt the Sidney Cafe.
Happy Birthday Sheri! May it be a lovely birthday week and a year filled with love, joy and much happiness!

Happy Birthday! My favorite way to spend my birthday is pretty selfish. I would love to be able to sleep a little late, not too late or the day is 1/2 gone. The clean, organized house would be empty of humans but for me and I would be able to knit and/or organize my scrapbook stuff or scrapbook while watching a good movie or two or three. Then I would have my favorite Thai food delivered for dinner even though they don’t deliver. I would talk to my mother on the phone sometime during the day. I would have a good glass of wine and then go to bed with the laptop and catch up on favorite websites, including this one and ravelry and e-mail and then go to bed at decent time without having to do laundry. I would get a good nights sleep which rarely happens. Has this day ever happened? No.

For my birthday , sometimes my husband is off at an annual meeting. If the meeting is somewhere I can tag along to, I get to go, if the logistics are not ‘in the cards’ I stay home. I know, that sounds horrible, BUT let me tell you, I usually get the royal treatment when he returns, which includes but is not limited to, my hubby bringing me an amazing gift. I LOVE Betsey Johnson dresses OR Anthropologie. So, on different birthdays he has come bearing gifts of either Betsey Johnson- he knows what I look good in and picks great stuff!!! Or, even 2 years ago I showed him a beautiful winter coat months earlier and HE BOUGHT IT and brought it home- what a guy!!
When I get to go, it means staying at a great hotel and getting to lounge around while he goes to meetings. One year it was here in San Diego and his company put us up at the Hotel Del Coronado ( the hotel from the movie, Some Like It Hot) even though we live 5 mins away. Beautiful 100 year old hotel:)
I also always get a Red Velvet cake. It has become a tradition for the last 11 years, yum.
If you never tried one, get a good one from a bakery with cream cheese frosting….the BEST!!!

Well, I just celebrated my birthday in January – first time away from family and friends since I’m in Korea now (for another 6 months). Didn’t do too much for it, but we were out shopping in Seoul that day so we stopped into a restaurant for dessert and they had the waiters and waitresses sing happy birthday to me (they did it in Korean…so cute).
My favourite way to spend my birthday is with family and friends. I’ve never done anything special but for a couple of years now my best friend has thrown me a little “party” of sorts and there are usually just 3 or 4 of us there. She makes whatever meal I tend to lean towards (we usually spend Sunday after church over at her place for the afternoon and she always makes us lunch), and we watch movies (usually with Matthew McConaghuey – or however you spell his last name – in them). I also enjoy being able to order myself yummy yarns online for my birthday (no one else dares order me yarn because they might not get what I like or want, even though I told them anything is fine). Anyway, maybe for my birthday next year i’ll have a big bash..I turn 40 afterall…eeks!

My favorite birthday until 15 years ago was spent with my mother. Her birthday is just 3 days later than mine. She would come and stay the whole month of November, we had so much fun. Sewing, shopping, laughing and just loving being together. Those memories will always be with me. She now is 90 years old and has Alheimers (does not know me) and recently diagnoised with lympompa. I have been blessed with wonderful parents.
Thank you for taking me down memory lane.

Happy Birthday Sheri! I liked the knit a mini sock from every sock yarn you work idea. Now how do I celebrate my birthday? My birthday is mid-August but I usually don’t get to celebrate it until Labor Day weekend. Well, my favorite celebration is then. I actually celebrate for a couple of weeks.
I sleep late. Go to Java Joz (closest thing to Starbucks in my town) for a Mocha frappe. I go to the movies and have popcorn and diet coke for lunch. Then I go to Outback and have a Victoria’s Filet for dinner and a Sydney Sinful Sundae for dessert.
The dinner and movie thing was something I shared with my friend who moved to St Louis several years ago. We now send one another money to pay for our dinners in our different cities. I will be having dinner with my friend at La Bonne Bouche while in St Louis for Fling.

My birthday falls near Thanksgiving, and the perfect birthday for me would be to be home to celebrate with family and friends. That’s the dream. It’s just not possible right now. Happy birthday!! Looking back, my favorite birthdays are spent with my favorite people! It’s the one day of the year I throw out my typical quality over quantity”, anti-excess packaging ideals, and I delight in every cheap trinket and bag of candy that my friends get me (we all being in the same “broke college student” boat), especially if it comes in a million layers of wrapping papers and along with oodles of balloons. I have no traditions, per se, but good food and good times are a must.
And, since my birthday is in the beginning of November, it marks the beginning of Christmas knitting! That weekend is when I make my lists and try to figure out who would most appreciate hand-knitted love — a good way to justify a LOT of extra knitting time!

I love spending my birthday sleeping in, with the kids (mysteriously) silent, waking up in the warmth of the sun. A couple cups of great coffee with Baileys mixed in for “Birthday Spirit”, spend all day with the family making Chicken Manicotti and my favorite Choc-Kahlua Cheesecake. Material presents are not necessary at all, just spending time with the family. There is a certain point in life (that I have finally struggled my way to get to) that if I want something, I just go buy it myself. I have what I want materially, I just want a peaceful day with those I love. That would be my ultimate birthday.

For my birthday, I have the great priviledge to be able to just sit back and wait for what my fiancĂ© has come up to surprise me with. He knows I love surprises too, so he’s always managed to come up with a great and special way to celebrate. There’s always a little something that shows he has really thought of me and my birthday. One time he had made dinner reservations to a fabulous restaurant and I had to find my way there through a series of clues. And last year he had baked and decorated a beautiful birthday cake all by himself! I love to surprise him too, as I know he likes it just as much. So I would have to say that the favourite way for me to celebrate is to celebrate it with him.

~ Happy Birthday ~
I love to spend my day doing absolutely nothing but what I want. Its been that way for the past 6 or 7 yrs including not working on my bday too though I only work part-time now. The family spends most of their day w/me too.
The past 3 yrs have been the best ~ dh celebrates my bday for 12 whole days. heehee ~ I get a present a day including the day of my bday, then I’m allowed to do whatever I want. Since we homeschool, my bday is founder’s day and its a holiday for the kiddos too. Sometimes we go on field trips but most times we have a slumber day with lots of junk food. ;D I’m usually taken to dinner or treated to takeout. My oldest also has recently made a point of taking me out to lunch and shopping. ;D
Enjoy your day, birthday girl ~ its an absolute wonderful day to celebrate!
btw ~ lovely mini-socks. sorry I missed that post on ravelry but off to check it out. LOL

My favorite way to spend my birthday is with someone else with a birthday around the same time. My brother’s birthday is the day before mine, so we always had a party together, so it just feels right to share the birthday joy with someone else. I don’t generally like being the one in the spotlight anyway, so this works well.
Oh, my husband and I also do a birthday week, where the week or so around your birthday you generally get you way about things because it is your birthday.

I used to spend the day doing nothing but knitting and watching movies. Now I have children and sleeping in and not doing anything is not allowed. So I get up make a great calorie filled breakfast, play with the toddlers, knit, feed the kids lunch, put them down for a nap, knit and watch a movie, when DH gets home (if he gets to come home, I am a military wife), then I get a bath, bathe the kids and we all go out to dinner at a kid friendly restaurant. Nothing extra special to other people, but a wonderful day in my world.

Happy birthday! My favourite way to spend my birthday is to take my dog out in the morning, preferably out of the city (the sun would of course be out). I have a February birthday too, so I would wear some hand knits, maybe some new socks that I had just finished and put aside until my birthday. I would have lunch at home with my husband and then in the afternoon I would meet my friends for tea, one of whom has her birthday just before mine, so we share celebrations, and we would have tea in teapots and china cups and saucers and a whole selection of cakes. We might decide to get some dinner as well, and then me and my husband would head home and spend the evening together.

I have to say that my favorite thing on my birthday is not what I do for myself, but what I get – its tradition in my family that *Everyone* will call/ text message the birthday person on their special day. Even on b-days that require me to work, I love knowing that starting at about 6 am, my cell phone is going to blow up with messages – including my bro-in-law singing his notorious, expletive-filled birthday song to me : ) The rest of the day can go to the dogs, but knowing that my friends and family are thinking about me is the best. When I was 14, my sister called the local radio station and dedicated a song to me – Today – Smashing Pumpkins, I thought that was so neat. I was getting ready for school and the dedication came on, I was like “I’m Jenn! It’s my birthday! OMG! This is for me!!!”

If my birthday falls on a work day I take the day off. I take my elderly mom out to breakfast. I celebrate this way as if paying homage. I owe mom for being here! My birthday also falls in line with the month my favorite department store offers a free make over. So, well in advance I book an appointment. A little something special for me and thank you for my mom.

My favorite way is to take a personal day from work and spend it in front of the TV with my latest yarn project, a pile of old movies and two dogs as close as they can get without being in my lap. Later, I don’t care if it’s pizza or Chinese, but I don’t want to cook it or clean up after it.

My favorite way to spend my birthday is out to dinner with family or at mother or mother-in-law’s table in a small family gathering. Then, after the meal, I like to go and play with my new toys! Usually knitting books, yarn, etc. I’m afraid I’m not very interesting so you’d better send me the prize so my life is not so dull!

Some Strong delicious coffee, a long hot bath, read the newspaper, no phone, no obligations, brunch, a massage ( back, feet, hands and scalp),a new haircut. Then, off
to a knitting store ( buy some goodies), onto the bookstore ( more goodies) home,
relax…order dinner via phone and relax while viewing all the goodies and cap off
with some wine, yarn and needles. A true selfish indulgence!!!!

Happy birthday to you! My birthday is St. Patrick’s Day, so everybody celebrates my northday! I, however, take a laid-back, non-green-beer approach to the day. No going to work, at least 3 movies for the DVD player (or a Project Runway marathon, or L&O, or something equally intriguing that my husband could not possibly care less about), a pile of yarn, and a vat of coffee. My poor, hard-working husband takes care of dinner – even if it’s Chinese take-out, I don’t have to cook. I usually bake my own cake, but that’s OK because I’m not too keen on thhe local “bakery’s” (Wal-Mart’s) frosting options. I usually get a card from the DH that makes me misty, and one from my kid that makes me giggle. Mostly, my birthday is for me to recharge my batteries. And I try to stretch it onto a full week if I can get away with it.

I homeschool my boys, so a “day off” still includes them, which isn’t a bad thing. They enjoy the fact that mom’s birthday is a holiday. The last couple of years, my oldest son (11) has enjoyed fixing me breakfast….”don’t get out of bed mom until I come and get you”.
Then we spend the day reading, maybe watching a movie and end the day with my husband and I going to a nice dinner.
This year..I am celebrating my birthday by going to the Spring Fling!

My favorite birthday would be spent in one of two ways. First , with my family, especially my husband. He is frequently out of town on my birthday because I had the poor judgement to be born in the middle of fire season. The second, when he is not here, is to sleep in, knit all day and then go to dinner with my family, usually my youngest granddaughter. Her birthday is near mine. Her favorite is to go to Dairy Queen or the equivalent, and eat ice cream for dinner. No sandwich or fries or anything, just all the ice cream we can eat. Sometimes we go back for a second round! Have a wonderful birthday, Sheri. We love you.

Many happy returns of the day, Sheri. I know you will have a joyous and loving birthday.
As I get older (oh my, I said the word), birthdays become less important to me. I never enjoyed the “party” and in fact have really never had one. I love being with my husband, my parents (who I only see a few times a year now – but always on my birthday and always on my mothers), and talking to our son on the phone. It doesn’t really matter where I am or what we do as long as I am doing it with people I love and who love me.

My mom’s birthday is 2 weeks after mine and my sister’s is 4 days after that. This year we all got together for the weekend and had dinners out, went shopping, drank lots of tea, ate tons of chocolate and chatted up a storm. I even managed to get some knitting done! They’re non-knitters but fairly tolerant as long as I knit for them on occasion!
So eventho it wasn’t technically on my birthday, that was my favorite way I’ve celebrated in a long time.

Favorite way to spend my birthday –
A day off of work, some kind of spa treatment like a pedicure, some knitting time, lunch with a friend, shopping (for clothes or knitting stuff), and dinner with my DH and cheesecake for dessert. Lucky for me, Maryland Sheep and Wool always falls within a few days of my birthday, which helps me justify some extra yarn purchases.

My favorite way to celebrate is the way I celebrated my last birthday (which was one ending in zero … we won’t go further). We went on vacation to Florida and I lay on a chair by the beach and knitted listening to the ocean. My blood pressure has probably never been that low! Then we went on to Tennessee and stayed in a cabin overlooking the Smokey Mts. – knitting on the deck while admiring the view. Ahhhh…

I consider my birthday a Holiday, and don’t work that day. I’ll spend it doing whatever pleases me–last year, that included my husband playing hooky and going with me to my local yarn shop for my first time ever! We also saw a movie in the middle of the day, wandered a bookshop, and had a great lunch.
Some years what’s pleased me is doing housework–when the place falls to pieces, it feels great to have time set aside to put it back together again! Other years it’s been reading a good book cover to cover, or some other fun project I haven’t had time for.
This year, my birthday falls on the weekend, so I don’t have to take off work. In fact, I’ll be on a train heading for a conference! So I think I’ll plan some knitting, and visiting a yarn shop or two in a new city.

so . . .
I love Valentine’s Day, and I run around doing all kinds of silly things for the people I love (knitting little hearts, paper hearts, etc), and then on my birthday I like it to be nice and quiet, without a great deal of fanfare. Big kisses and hugs, a venti from starbucks and knitting. I so love it!

“Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you…” etc. Yes I have just serenaded you with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday on line.
My ideal birthday would include someone coming in to do some of the housework around here (I feel like I will never catch up). I would like to knit, read, and nap during the day – or maybe do a local yarn crawl. Then dinner out of course – the whole family is invited, as long as I get to choose the restaurant. And last but not least, some sort of wonderful chocolate dessert (cake, mousse, pie, tart, creme brulee, whatever – I am not particular, as long as it is good stuff!).
It is always nice to receive a few thoughtful gifts, but that is not required; with my birthday so close to Christmas (Dec. 14) people tend to be all shopped out or out of ideas anyway. And maybe some fun after dinner – singing or other music making, ice skating, whatever, just so it is fun!
Maybe I will copy this e-mail and send it to myself so I remember to do some of these things on my next birthday!

I enjoy being on vacation for my birthday but regardless I like doing whatever I want, having my kids celebrate with me, and going out for a really nice dinner. My favorite way to spend my birthday is just QUIET, good old comfortable silence. everyday I long for just silence and slowness, so I think to have quiet birthday would be awesome, with no screaming, fighting kids, no howling temper tantrum throwing baby, so silly barking dogs. One day, my husband took me to Afternoon Tea and it was so wonderful, all you could hear was the sounds of the tea cups hitting the saucer and the pages of the books turning (a lot of people were reading). So, I guess if I could have a perfect birthday, I would wish for some day like that, where the silence was so complete it shimmered.

My boyfriend of nearly three years moved from our place in New Jersey to Connecticut for work a little over a year ago so we’ve gone from seeing each other every day to weekends only. He has always made my birthday a weeklong event with Happy Birthday emails and mini-celebrations every night but the distance has really curtailed that — at least the mini-celebration part. Last year he took off work early (a minor miracle in itself) and braved crazy traffic on the Tappan Zee bridge to come take me out to dinner at our favorite Indian restaurant, which was lovely in and of itself. It was nice to go on a real date! Unbeknownst to me he’d also called all our friends so when we went to “grab a quick drink” at the local watering hole there was a birthday party waiting. Honestly, the perfect birthday for me is just getting to spend some time with him…something I don’t get to do enough these days.

My favorite way to spend my birthday…
I’d start with a nice sunny day. Maybe a bike ride, stopping at a sidewalk cafe for lunch, then playing tag with the kids and hubby in the park. Home for a shower, then a nice dinner (again dining al fresco) and getting ice cream while taking a walk. Ideal! I have a summer birthday.
Last year my birthday began with a trip to the mall, with hubby Then lunch in Chatham for sushi, then to the Stitching Bee across the street for some yarn… Koigu my first ever batch. Then home to pick up the kids from grandmas. Pretty nice.

Happy birthday Sheri!
I’m a big fan of extended celebrations, so make the party last!
My taste in how to celebrate my birthday changes from time to time. Life these days is pretty hectic, so quiet, laid-back and relaxing are words that really appeal to me. What I do depends on where I happen to be, but tends to include things like a day at a museum (plus lunch or dinner out, of course), visiting a botanical garden, long phone chats with friends I don’t get to see much anymore. The most important part (and I understand that some people disagree) is that my birthday is in April, which I figured out (at about 5 or 6) is the best month for a birthday. I think the key is that whatever your birthday month is, is the best month. Happy birthday Sheri!

Best way to spend a birthday? Well, mine’s in September, so I often go canoeing with a friend and my cat – someplace isolated, unspoiled and beautiful. Don’t always get to do that, though.
Most memorable birthday? Doing field work deep in the woods of northern New Brunswick, getting two (2!!!) flat tires and and spending my birthday out alone in my truck all night in a raging thunderstorm. Won’t be forgetting that one soon.

Have a Sockin’ Happy Birthday, Sheri!
Every year for 22 yrs my “darling” DH gets a useful gift. You know, like a swiffer wet jet arrived one year to “make my life easier”.
A blender (so he and the youngest DD could make milkshakes) it was red (my favorite color) but it was an appliance.
Another year the gift was a can opener. Again to “make my life easier”. The list goes on, sweepers, dishwasher etc. The funny thing is, my kids and DH are actually excited to see my reaction to these “wonderful” gifts. I was smart and acted surprised and thrilled for the sake of the children.
It took 24 yrs of marriage and child rearing for “it” to finally kick in.
One year my college aged boys unexpectedly showed on my doorstep. They both worked at a very nice Italian restaurant while in college 2 hours away. They brought chicken alfredo, salad, and canolis for dessert. My two daughters dyed a skein of yarn for me and put it in my favorite mug with tea. None of them had much money and yet they used their resources to make my birthday a memorable one. I was so excited and it has been my most memorable birthday. (well besides the swiffer etc, I laugh about those now)
My DH has learned over the years and now tells me to purchase yarn for myself. I love that guy. And there really is hope for him
.
Enjoy the day and the chocolate

First, my birthday falls on Halloween and I have three children: so trick or treating is always involved. This coming year, the perfect birthday would be at St. Jude Children’s Hosp (its big there, they have 2 hrs for trick or treating), finishing up my sons nine month scans, hearing that they are clear, and having my other 2 children and hubby w/ us (we were apart last year due to circumstances). Trick or treating with my son, instead of for him (he was in isolation and then inpatient that night for round 3 of high dose chemo/ stem cell transplant). Getting to shop at the LYS that taught me to knit, a GC for The Loopy Ewe (love the selection), dinner at our favorite pizza restaurant in Memphis: then being able to come home the next day.

Since I am “of a certain age”, I no longer have birthdays – Now I have Present Days. Present Days have a fairly strict agenda:
*I sleep until I wake up – no alarms, no phone calls, no dogs (I know you understand)
*I can hang out in my jammies until I’m ready to get dressed to do whatever strikes my fancy (Anything at all! Woo Hoo!)
* I do not cook
*I do not clean
*I shop only for fun stuff
*I do not add a year to my age
*Everyone is nice to me and gives me presents (Hence the name Present Day)
I’m thinking of doing this more than once a year (If I can just figure out how to get my family to go along with it!!) :0)

Although I couldn’t do this for my birthday this go around, my favorite way to spend my birthday is to take the day off and go on a day trip to one of the nearby cities where I live and go shopping — and that usually involves yarn shops and maybe a scrapbook store. YAY! Happy Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day…
So, my birthday lands right after all the holiday hoopla, so usually everyone (including myself) is pretty partied out and still stuffed from Christmas dinner
. Over the past couple of years, my birthday has normally been just another day…though this year I was in NIcaragua–for work not for play. Anyhow, the day is normal, but then I always get to pick my very favorite restaurant and enjoy a great dinner (usually some sort of seafood) and a bottle of wine with my very closest friend in Charm City. And then I get to go to an Italian pastry shop and get my free birthday canoli…very yummy! I should note that if my birthday falls on a weekend then I will usually make myself a nice breakfast (or go to this great French Bakery), walk to Starbucks and get yummy coffee, and then knit all day until it is time to go out!

I like to spend my birthday with my family. There are usually two celebrations – one big family celebration with my parents, husband, children and any assorted extended family we can rustle up. Then Nick and I go out just the two of us for a very nice dinner. It’s usually romantic…..and we do it either just before or just after my actual birthday so it results in two parties. This is fresh in my mind since my 41st birthday was yesterday. LOL. What I do during the day varies from year to year, but usually involves some type of pampering. It’s the traditional birthday dinner that leaves my friends screaming with laughter. On my birthday my entire family gathers at my parent’s house for the birthday dinner I have been served since I was 2: Hotdogs with cheese wrapped in crescent rolls, baked beans, and devil’s food cake with 7 minute frosting. Every year my poor mother asks if she can change the menu, wouldn’t I like something “nicer” for my birthday dinner. Nope. That menu suits me just fine and we have alot of laughs about it.

My favorite way to spend my birthday is simply with my family — as the kids are growing up this is more and more infrequent, unfortunately. If I were to pick my very favorite place to spend the day, it would have to be a cabin in the North Georgia mountains. For my birthday cake, I love to have chocolate sheet cake. My very favorite!!!
I could knit and read and talk with the family all day long. Pure heaven.

A lot of people are talking about taking the day off. I’ve never done that, but it sounds really, really good. I might just have to try that out next month.
A couple of years ago on my birthday, I went to the market downtown and got fresh pasta and veggies and shrimp and sauce and a bottle of wine, and made myself a wonderful dinner, which I ate while watching a funny movie. That might just be my favourite private birthday celebration – so far.
Have a wonderful birthday, Sheri!

Happy B’day Sheri!! I love watching my kids try and keep a secret for a few days. I work near my LYS but live across town. My son this year said we were going to see you @ work but we were too loud in the mini-van so Dad took us home. He was trying to throw me off of the what were you doing on that side of town trail. I was totally surprised when I opened a gift from the LYS.

Birthdays aren’t that big of a deal in my house, probably because we don’t have kids yet. But, my husband used to take me out to “our” restaurant every year. Since we just moved out to rural Ohio before my latest birthday, he scoured the county for a good restaurant and managed to find a fantastic place not too far away that will probably become our new restaurant.

My favorite way to spend my birthday usually doesn’t happen ON my birthday itself, but certainly celebrates my birthday! One of my LYSs (Local Yarn Stores) has a birthday sale (one time, within 1 week of your birthday, you get to shop, and everything you buy is on discount – the discount is equal to half your age – you have to show ID). My discount is over 25% now, and I’m shooting for 50% one day. I take gift certificates and any birthday money, and go shopping! A nice lunch out accompanies this, and if I can get a friend to come along and enable me, that is nice, too! All year long I compile the list of books, accessories, and yarns that I am interested in, and off I go! The only sadness is if something is not in stock.
Happy Birthday to you, Sheri! I love to read your blog, and share a bit of your happiness and joy of life!

My birthday always falls on the same day that the County Fair in my town is open and I like to spend the day at the fair eating as much of the junkie food that I love as I want and looking at all the great exhibits and watching all of the great shows. I normally would never eat all the junk food I eat that day but since it is my birthday I let myself do it without feeling to guilty,

i always start my birthday by calling my mom — thanks for birthing me, mama! but that’s really as far as it goes for birthday rituals. after the 25th, they stopped being really important so we are rather fluid with the celebrations. sometimes cake, sometimes dinner, sometimes breakfast. sometimes a drive, sometimes a present — it’s all good as long as the family is with me.

Happy Birthweek Sheri, may it be the best ever!
The previous tradition for celebrating my birthweek (who wants just one day?) was to grab a bunch of friends and head to the nearest pumpkin patch (birthweek is in Oct) and pick pumpkins and drink fresh apple cider. But my favorite birthweek was last year when a friend and I went to Rhinebeck for the first time. I really hope you and some elves will come (to Rhinebeck) sometime Sheri, then my birthweek would even better!

I just enjoy spending time with my family on my birthday. We usually end up grilling steaks on the grill…mmmmmmm! I love Italian food also and we may go out for my birthday with my husband and kids(ages 10 and 8). I have to say though that my last birthday was probably the best ever. I turned 35 and I was actually trying not to acknowledge the day. I was just gonna let it pass by. Once my husband came home from work he reminded the kids(cause they had forgotten) and I immediately began to be showered with a back massage, foot rub and even the 8 year old gave me a “pedicure”. It was the best ever and I definitely will not try to pass up another birthday.

Happy Birthday Sheri! I hope you have a lovely relaxing day!
I think my favorite way to spend my birthday involves not working. And it’s warm so I can sit outside for breakfast lunch and dinner if I want to. I would want to spend the day just hanging out with friends and family. Good tea, Sephora and a trip to a yarn store might be involved too. Unfortunately I will not be spending my birthday this way this year. Someday.
Does the mailman know all the boxes he’s trying to fit in the truck are yarn? And yarn that is being anxiously waited for?

My birthday is this weekend!
I’m going to try and do my favorites this year, since it falls on a weekend. I’m going to sleep in, that’s first! and I’m not going to get up until I’m REALLY ready! Then my Hubby and I are going to breakfast at our favorite little breakfast place down the road. Then, well knitting and spinning! I’m going to take a day to do all the fiber stuff I love and not feel guilty about all the house work stuff I’m not doing! To round the day off I’ll probably snuggle up with Hubby on the couch, watch a movie, and knit on some socks. And cake … there has to be cake in there somewhere, but I haven’t gotten all the details worked out yet.

My birthday is only 2 weeks after Christmas so everyone is all partied out. Give me a romantic dinner for two; out to my favorite restaurant, Finz with all the courses that I normally don’t have … appetizer, Filet minion or baked haddock, & dessert. Of course a bottle of wine with dinner but with the appetizer a cocktail. Coffee with the dessert. M-m-m-m, I’m making myself hungry … but I have to wait until my next birthday.

Happy Birthday Sheri!! Enjoy your day.
I’d love a day off from work. Sleep until I wake up and spend most of the day in my pjs just reading and knitting, having someone bring me beverages and snacks. Non of the calories count!! Late afternoon, have a couple of glasses of wine with my sweetie while sitting on our deck. Then a nice dinner with no calories counting then either:-)
The sad part about my birthdays in reality is that my mother doesn’t remember them. But then she doesn’t remember her own either. She’s 92 and has Alzheimer’s. It’s a terrible disease.

I’ve often worked on my birthday, but I don’t mind that much. As long as hubby takes me out to dinner or at least orders delivery or something.

The older I get the more I like low stress birthdays. l prefer quiet, family time. So I would say a great birthday would be a chance to spend most of the day knitting (with the necessary relief from chores), followed by a nice, quiet dinner (at a restaurant or at home as long as I don’t have to cook or clean the kitchen afterwards), perhaps a movie, and of course, lots of chocolate cake. Presents – yarn or chocolate or both.

I also usually take myself shoppping for yarn or scrapbook stuff, sometimes a new handbag or make up too. There’s also an evening out w/ DH and the kiddos. Because my birthday is in May when spring is slowly turning into summer, my favorite way to spend my birthday is with a picnic at some beautiful spot. When I use to live near Niagara Falls, that was my favorite spot to just put down a blanket with some friends and dine on bread, cheese and wine. And of course we’d have to end the picnic with my favorite cake which is perfect for the season, Strawberry Shortcake.

Happy Birthday Sheri! My birthday is October 8th, and frequently it fall on Columbus day, giving me the day off. No matter what, though, we celebrate my birthday on Columbus Day (we’re all lucky enough to have it off from work/school). My dear husband, non-knitting
daughter, and I load into the car for a road trip. We’re only about 30 minutes from the Pocono Mountains in PA, so we take a leisurely drive to see the autumn leaves and find a nice place to eat in the poconos. We hit the local candle stores (for some reason they are BIG business there) and generally enjoy our time together. I always bring my sock knitting with me in the car – a great time to get some stitches in.
I love spending my birthday this way, and I love the predictability of it!

Umm, you have a lot of birthday wishes to read already..but I thought I’d add mine too…
Since i was born in July my day would start by waking up at my parents cottage…smelling the morning breeze…a beautiful sunny day.
We would go out for breakfast, mine would be waffles, with oodles of fresh berries, whipped cream, custard and berry sauce.
During the morning there would be nothing difficult, a nice walk to enjoy the weather, maybe put my toes in the water, off the end of the dock…
Lunch would be something off the BBQ, with nice salads and whatnot…a little get together with the family, with a lot of good food. And a white cake with white buttercream frosting…
I would wile away the afternoon in the shade, keeping out of the sun, enjoy a few cool drinks, knitting, relaxing, chatting. Maybe a game of lawn bowling or something…
We would go out for supper, maybe something italian…or not, maybe a local pub…? So long as it’s fresh ingredients.
We would of course finish off the night with a fire…nothing like sitting around the fire having fun and interesting convos wth family and friends…and there would be roasted marshmallows and hotdogs for snacks. We’d go to bed when we ran out of firewood…the day would end like it began, with a lovely cooling breeze.
Well, i better send a copy of this to my husband, so he knows what’s coming up!!!
Hope you have just a lovely day as i am obviously hoping for…remember, it’s not getting older, it’s getting wiser.

I celebrated by 30th birthday in the best way recently! A very dear friend of mine was having her 30th just a few days before mine, so we threw ourselves a huge party — we rented a pub’s back room, had 2 live bands (one was her brother’s and the other a very good friend of mine), invited loads of friends… my husband even surprised me by getting some very old friends to come in from out of town. Food wise, there were veggies & dip, fruit trays, and even a chocolate fountain! And the night before I decided that it wouldn’t be a ‘real’ birthday without cake, so I baked nearly 100 cupcakes! It was crazy and large, loud and energetic, frivolous even, but one of the best nights I’ve ever had. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday.
(Though I must add that on the actual day of my birth, I knocked off work, slept in, took myself to to the bookstore, and shared a quiet dinner with a few friends a a great little Ethiopian restaurant. I felt spoilt and wonderful!)
Hope your birthday was fantastic, no matter how you spent it!!

My birthday ritual is never the same twice!!!
I always get a call from my Mommy and step Dad… singing of course! la la la Happy Birthday to me! This year (being out of the country and so far from home was really sad) I decided to go to work anyway… my office was covered with streamers!!! (I have great friends!) I got scrumpcious chocolate cupcakes too!!! My wonderful hubby brought me the most beautiful roses and a big birthday hug and kiss. I got plenty of birthday wishes that day!
When I got home my little angel (20 months at the time) Cidney gave me a beautiful multi-page birthday card drawing filled with all of her favorite stickers! Then I got a big hug and kiss from her!
My honey made us all dinner, spaghetti of course! (My hubby’s best dish!) Then we put the little one to bed and watched a movie together.
(I can’t discuss anything that may or may-not-have-happened after that!)
It was great birthday!

Happy Birthday, Sheri! I hope you don’t get tired reading the hundreds of birthday wishes you get today!
This year I’m celebrating a “significant” birthday (we won’t say which one!). I’ve asked my two younger sisters to celebrate with me by joining me on an island in Penobscot Bay (which is about a 1/2 hour mail boat ride from where I live). I have been going to this particular island for a couple of years to paint for a week in the Fall with a group of artist and writer women friends. It has only solar power, and no plumbing (that’s right, well water and an outhouse). My sisters and I have never spent a vacation together as adults without spouses, significant others or kids. I thought it would be great to get four days together on this island, where we can — sleep in, take walks in the woods, sit on the cliffs and watch the osprey dive into the water, watch sailboats go by (this will be in July), make ‘fairy houses’ from the various driftwood, lichen and shells scattered about, eat good food (we all love to cook), drink lots of wine, and knit! That’s the vision I’m working on, anyways.

At this point in life my birthdays seem to be “just another day”. However, this past weekend was my mom’s 70th and I flew back to Chicago to surprise her. I’ve always lived so far from home (first Alaska, now Germany) that it’s a long time between visits, let alone a surprise visit. I used to like to spend my birthday out with friends eating out or something like that. These days, though, I enjoy spending it with my kids – I have a 4.5 year old son and a 1.5 week old daughter. This year I’m hoping we’ll get to do something outdoors like camping or hiking (it’s in September), maybe pick someplace really gorgeous to go like the White Mountains in New Hampshire and make a family vacation out of it. If not, there are plenty of beautiful spots to be found here in good old Maine so we can at least do a day trip. If the weather is nice I’d like to get out in the woods and take lots of lovely photos of my kids to remember the day by.
Oh, and of course no birthday celebration would be complete without Sparklers!

Happy birthday to you!!!! I will be sending you a mini sock next week, so keep an eye out in the mail for it!
Now, my favorite way to spend my birthday occurs both during my birthday and after. First, I don’t just celebrate my birthday – I celebrate my birthday week, and sometimes month if I can get away with it! My birthday is March 10, so the week of my birthday is a special week for me – I do no housework, no cooking, no laundry. I allow my DH and children to treat me like the queen that I wish to be.
This year we are going to Williamsburg with the kids to meet up with friends and do some knitting shopping!
The second part of my birthday comes in April when my best friend and I go away for a long weekend to celebrate our birthday’s (her’s is in May – that’s why we pick April). Last year we went to Williamsburg to the Colonial Williamsburg spa. This year it’s to her parent’s condo at the outer banks. 3 days of no husbands, work, children, “mommy I want” and “mommy he/she hit me”. Three days to sit on the balcony or beach and knit until my fingers fall off. Heaven.

I live on a beautiful lake, so I love to spend the day at home moving from the dock to the hammock with a book and some summer knitting and a pillow. Then definitely a martini and a fine meal cooked by my wonderful husband, maybe a boat ride? Summer birthdays are great!

Hah, my favorite birthday comes every 8 years – It falls on Labor Day (Sept. 7) so not only do I get a three day weekend, I get paid for NOT going to work on my birthday. Besides that, I am very selfish on my birthday, and spend the day pampering myself at the spa (well, what passes for a spa here in Juneau)…

My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is to take the day off work, sit in front of a roaring fire (winter birthday), and alternate between knitting, reading, and watching TV. The only interruption should be calls from friends and family.

Wow! Lots of responses here!
I love birthdays. I will be singing for you momentarily, Sheri.
The way I celebrate depends on the birthday. For the “normal” ones, I like to get together with just a few close friends and have dinner out, then back to my house for some cake and ice cream and coffee/tea. Last year, we went to the local diner, where the owner (who knows us) brought out more cake.
I love small town living sometimes.
For the “big” birthdays (the zeros and fives), though, I feel it requires something more. My last big one, I invited all my special friends and family from all over the country. I got the back room at a nice Italian restaurant, and we had a special menu and wine and everything. It was really great.
Right now, I’m in the midst of planning for Mama’s 80th birthday. It may cut into the yarn budget, but hey, it’s really requiring something huge, I think. Maybe I can knit up scarves and socks and sell them to help fund it.
And now: The Birthday Song for Sheri.
**clearing throat**
Happy Birthday to you. **grin**
Happy Birthday to you! **GRIN** **looks around**
Happy Birthday dear Sheri!!!! **falls over**
**gets up**
**clears throat**
Happy Birthday to you!!!! **grin**
**drops curtsey**

Hello
My husband and I have been together for 20 years. My birthday is the day after Christmas and my family have always made that day a very special one for me. My husband took over the responsibility of making my day wonderful and he has always taken the day off work just so we could spend the day together. It has always been awesome!!

I normally try to spend the day doing nothing, no dishes, no laundry, all of that is someone else’s problem for the day. Then the whole family always goes out to dinner. The fun thing is that my husband and I have birthday’s one day apart. We get to go to two fancy restaurants in a week for birthday dinners. If we’re lucky we also take a night where just he and I go out and celebrate, but that only happens every other year or so.

Have a wonderful birthday, Sheri, and enjoy a well-deserved day off. I look forward to my birthday just to have the day off from housecleaning and laundry! I’ll spend some time knitting or sewing. And since my birthday is in mid-May, weather permitting, I’ll spend part of the day at the local garden shops picking out flowers for my gardens. (My obsession for flowers rivals my obsession for yarn and fabric!!)
Then dinner out with my family, so no one has to do the dishes….

Think I’m gonna do it this year. Always, birthdays have been rather homebound, with family (husband, kids, then grandchildren also). The kids gather, come on home with a hug and a kiss and gifts. This year, husband and I already have reservations for a condo for a week at a resort up in the Shenandoah Mountains, beginning on my birthday in May!! Just the two of us. There’ll be hiking, sightseeing, Luray Caverns – but I’ll also bring knitting for the time he’s golfing. So there will be peace and quiet, too. And this birthday may be the best yet.

My favorite way to spend my birthday, as sappy as this may sound, is with my family. I don’t care about doing a big to-do for my birthday anymore. Ever since I turned 21, I feel like every other year is just a way to celebrate my eventual death, and that just brings me one year closer to it, so my birthday, to me, is no big deal anymore. I do like to celebrate the fact that I am here though, so I spend it being sappy with my family, and with LOADS of cake, because that’s the one day out of the year that I don’t care if I’ll gain 5 pounds from some sweet, sugary, super fattening cake.

Well the answer to your questio would depend on what point in my life you were asking me. When I was younger and childless probably something crazy and fun like getting in the car with a few friends and just seeing where we end up, or finding the biggest carrot cake around and eating as much as I can by my myself (LOL back when I could do that and STILL fit in my jeans the next day!) Now with two young kids my birthday wishes are much calmer- a shower or bath all by my lonesome? Maybe dinner with out a two year old and a baby in my lap? Oooh and definately some uninteruptted knitting time *sigh* sounds like a great brithday to me!!!

I used to pick a list of about 10 people, a mix of people I didn’t get to see often enough and those I see nearly daily, and invite them to dinner. I always expected to pay for myself (and ate affordably rather than decadently as a result), though I didn’t normally have to pay. It was usually Thai followed by a trip to one of the local ice cream parlors (Herrells equals delicious).
Of course, now I ask for a nap for my birthday, because sleep is a wonderful thing.

I almost never catch them at home and don’t get to talk to them very often. Especially my Dad… it’s always been that way. Well! I don’t work on my birthday, and I like to get some pampering in – if it’s a trip to the spa or a pedicure or something, and then a nice dinner with friends & family. I’m turning 40 this year, and my husband says he’s already planning something, which is both exciting, and nervous-making, because who knows what he’s come up with, and I made him promise it was not paintball. Happy Birthday Sheri! I’m right after you, my b-day is March 1st. Was it a leap year the year you were born? It was when I was born and my father kept terrorizing me by telling me that if I had been born a day earlier I would only grow one year older for every four. That’s a scary thought when you’re a kid and want to hurry and grow up but that would sure be great now!
My favorite way to spend my birthday is having a game day with friends, which I’m doing this weekend – luckily my b-day is on a Saturday this year. Hope you’re enjoying your day!

On my birthday, I love eating all my favorite snack/junk foods, having all my favorite friends over (that doesn’t happen very often, though), eating whatever dinner I happen to be in the mood for, and I frequently like going shopping, too (I usually get money for my bday, so that’s even more fun). It frequently takes a couple days (or weeks, if I don’t go shopping right away) to get through all my birthday, especially since every separate place I’m involved gives me an extra something special.
A Birthday Week is I think one of the coolest concepts EVER.

And it always involves a buttercream chocolate cake with fresh strawberry filling!

I think the way I spent my most recent birthday was quite a good one. I may have to try out some other ideas, though…
Mine was:
Invite all friends.
Spend a full day baking.
Sit in the backyard, in the sun, enjoying baked goodies and friends’ company.
Oh, and unwrapping presents… I like unwrapping.

Happy Birthday! What a great suprise those little socks must be.
My favorite way to spend my birthday is hanging out with my husband, and then going to dinner with family in the evening. At least that’s the way they tend to go and I enjoy them. My dream birthday would be spent snorkling or scuba diving in warm crystal clear waters around a reef filled with bright tropical fish. Then spending the afternoon relaxing on the deck of a sailboat reading, knitting and enjoying the wind and sun on my face, while drinking a mango dacquiri. Hmmm..I need a vacation!

Reading and knitting under the shade of the birch tree. The kids bring me iced tea and lunch. Later dinner out with DH and a walk on the beach. Birthdays are fun. Don’t forget to send mother flowers as a thanks for giving you life.

All I ask for for my birthday is to be able to do whatever I want. Really I’d like a quiet day with relaxing, watching movies, hanging out with friends, and of course knitting. But so long as I don’t have to do any work, I’m more than satisfied.

relax, have lunch out. Do something fun with DH and DS. Nice dinner out. Rule for the day, “no whining!”

My favorite way to spend my birthday is with my husband. I would want to go out for a nice dinner and maybe knit as well. Just as long as I was able to spend it with him it would be good. Ideally I’d have the rest of my family (who doesn’t live by me) there as well.

The fav way to spend my birthday? Every year my mother has a birthday party for me. Yes, I know, I’m 48. BUT I love it. Amd i am not the only one she gives a party. Everyone from 1-74 gets at least a cake, card and something special to eat. Of course over the years my sister and I pitch in even is it is our own birthday. But the thought of gathering with family and celebrating another year of life is awesome.

If it’s a work day, I take the day off. Weekend or weekday, I sleep in and go out for breakfast.- nothing like celebrating with a calorie-laden, greasy, artery clogging and darn tasty meal of eggs, bacon/sausage and hash browns! A break from the usual yogurt and fruit. I treat myself to something- the last few years it’s been something knitterly. I go on a search for my favorite ice cream (lemon custard) and usually end up settling for something else. The last few years, I’ve gone out to dinner with a friend whose birthday is also on the same day.

My favorite way to spend my birthday is to keep it simple. I usually spend it with my family and either we all go out to dinner or I can request what I want for dinner (usually it’s mom’s cookin!).
The only bummer is that I don’t get a homemade cake like others in my family because I’m the baker in the family. Maybe I should just make the cake I want for myself? LOL

Happy (belated) Birthday! And I know it was a good one because it was my birthday, too! (I feel a Beatles song coming on, but we really do share a birthday it seems.)
My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is to tell everyone I know and/or meet that it’s my birthday. I find that “Happy Birthday” is one of those phrases that people have trouble saying while frowning. So I get lots of birthday wishes fro lots of smiling people. I also like to use my birthday as an excuse for everything from eating extra chocolate to spending house cleaning time knitting instead to watching what I want on TV. My philosophy is there is one day a year when I should get to indulge just about any whim (as long as it only hurts me
), and so I do. Dude, I love my birthday.

My favorite way to spend my birthday is to do no housework, unfortunately I can avoid not having to go to work. I also enjoy spending the day with my family. This was actually the first year that I got a birthday cake in a very long time. The reason why I got a cake this year? I complained. This past birthday was the best birthday in a very long time. I got to spend it with family (at least in the evening). Very few people at work knew that it was my birthday.

A Super Happy Birthday to you dear.
My fave way to celebrate my birthday is first, have a good cup of coffee, read my emails, then the family comes over and sings and brings presents and cake and we have a good time talking and playing with the kids. Then after everyone leaves, and hubby is settled down with the Wii or tv, I pull out my yarns and needles and knit on something special, just for me.
Very special day spent!!!
Hugs Patt
I hope your day is exactly what you want.

For me, it would be a day of shopping and no work (alas, didn’t happen last year as I had started a new job about 2 weeks before) because you can’t do much more in December, eating some home baked cake (from a box…that didn’t happen either) and/or spending time with my family!

I’m still thinking about the *best* way, but I can start with the worst way: making the decision to euthanize a pet. *sigh* This was my birthday experience this week.
In an effort not to be a total downer, I’ll put my preliminary idea(s) down for “Best Way to Spend Your Birthday”:
1. Web shopping for PDF pattern downloads (immediate gratification!!!)
2. Etsy shopping for more patterns, roving and yarn from the indies out there when my known faves (Perchance to Knit, for one!) aren’t in stock at TLE!
3. Book shopping. *sigh* Especially used bookstores, with a list of books you *really* don’t want to pay online prices for—or have to wait for shipping on!
4. A dinner out at a restaurant of my choosing. This hasn’t happened yet (see above), so I’m hoping for a delayed-dinner to celebrate. We’ll raise a glass to little Maya during the meal.
5. Depending on how….aged I’m feeling, a quick stop in at Sally’s Beauty Supply for some Clairol hair coloring to pump up the fading color in my hair. (What was once jet-black is now silver-and-lighter-brown. *sigh*)
Happy birthday to you too! Us February babies have the best month of them all!
Anne.

Happy Belated Birthday Sheru!
My favorite way to spend my birthday isn’t confined to one thing, I try to just be more aware throughout the day. To focus on the many blessings I have in my life and think about all the people who have influenced me. As I get older I am just so grateful to be here,to have people to love and to be loved. Grandma always said-any day you put two feet on the floor is a good day. When I keep that as my starting point I always have great days.

We have started a tradition with the “girls” in my family – my sister, 2 nieces and my daughter, where we all go out to eat on our birthdays. The nieces and my daughter are grown now (daughter is 18 and nieces are late 20’s and 30) and it is a good way to touch base and catch up on things. I love that time together and we all look forward to it. Other than that, I have started trying to take the day off of work too, although birthdays are special in my office – co-workers bring treats for birthdays in the units and it is a fun day at work too.

My favorite birthday would be: sleeping until 9, pancakes and really good coffee for breakfast, a visit to the zoo (preferably with the toddlers in my life) and the rest of the day spent with family, capped off with dinner and the all important DQ ice cream cake. Sadly – my birthday is the middle of August and I’m an athletic trainer, which means that my birthday is during two-a-days and I therefore spend at least 12 hours at work, in 80-90 degree heat every year on my birthday. But someday….

the only way i celebrate my birthday is in bed with the covers over my head trying to avoid the curse. something bad, weird, or dangerous always happens on my birthday (july 18th, consider youself warned). and it always rains. this last birthday, i woke up to a record-breaking thunderstorm that hit my area (the northeast–once again, consider yourself warned) and my next door neighbor’s garage, with her brand-new volvo in it, got hit by lightning. it is a really long horrible story, ultimately involving me having to wade thru 2 feet of flooded paddock, to get her 5 horses out of harm’s way and onto higher ground, and the volvo didn’t survive.
so my favorite thing to do on my birthday is to plan something fun for the day after my birthday, assuming i live thru it, that is.

My birthday is Dec. 31st. so I am always at some party somewhere by days end. In the morning though my children make me breakfast in bed and then we cuddle in bed together for awhile. Then the day is usually spending time with my family. There is one rule though for the day. My girls are not allowed to fight at all and when I say HUG, they have to hug each other and say “We love you mommy”. It’s a beautiful thing.

My best birthday would be taking the day off work and spending it in the kitchen…but not like everyday cooking. I would have all day to make jams and jellies, slowcook stew or chili, bake fresh bread and desserts. In the downtime I would knit a pair of socks just for me in a yarn that would totally bust my budget!

My birthday is usually on the longest day of the year (June 21), and the weather is usually very nice, so I like to spend the day outside. I start with my favorite summer breakfast (granola, yogurt, and fruit) and then my husband and I take our dog to the park for a long walk. If it’s raining, I like to stay inside to watch a movie and knit! For dinner, my husband makes me something delicious on the grill, and then we make homemade ice cream for dessert!
Happy birthday, Sheri! Hope you had a great day.

I tend towards shopping — on my own if others are at work, with one or two friends if it can be managed — and then dinner in a small group someplace with foofy drink and large beef slabs.
There is also usually Starbucks.
The nearest available weekend the past couple years has involved fiance. He likes shopping. He likes the *girly* shopping. This year, I will win at birthday with husband.
(I need to make up this year for spending the night of my birthday in the emergency room with a swollen ear canal…)

My favorite way is to have a day where I don’t have to do anything. I could sit and read, sit and knit, sit and watch a movie. I would also be happy if my daughter could come visit, as she lives 500 miles away, and I don’t see her nearly as much as I would want. I don’t need gifts – time would be enough of a gift.

My favorite way to spend my birthday??? Well, as it’s the end of March, first I’m hoping for a warm, sunny Spring day. Then I like to wake up early in the morning and have coffee on the porch with my hubby and listen to the spring birds and their songs. Then I love to walk around my yard and spy what is starting to “pop” up out of the ground. Crocuses, Snowdrops in bloom, daffodils beginning to emerge, and other spring bulbs starting to show their heads. Also, by this point, the lilacs are beginning to show signs of life as well. Then, I like to spend the day in my gardens, just absorbing the warmth of the sun, soaking in the spring sounds and smells and yes, I don’t mind the early garden clean up. I’ll plant my peas, if the ground isn’t too wet as well. Then, when hubby gets home (kid’s don’t need babysitting anymore, which is nice) we’ll order pizza for the kids and we’ll head off to a nice dinner somewhere and then an evening stroll, maybe down by the river, if it’s warm enough.
A relaxing day with nature, in my gardens. A warm Spring day after a long cold winter. That’s my favorite birthday.
