Where do you like to linger?
Linger. Webster’s says (and yes, I had to put my reading glasses on to read that teeny tiny paperback dictionary print) that “linger” means “to remain long or be reluctant to go”. We like it when you linger at The Loopy Ewe! (You’ll linger even longer pretty soon, when our cool new search feature goes up. It’s fun to play with. But first, College Guy needs to finish up with Finals at school.) This is the time of year that we linger on our back porch, and I just love it. We eat dinner out here every night. Dinner in the wintertime consists of sitting at the kitchen table and eating, and then getting up and going on about our night. It’s a nice kitchen, but we don’t usually linger. Dinner on the back porch consists of eating and then sitting there and talking for quite awhile. The birds are singing, the cats are exploring, and we …. linger. It’s peaceful and relaxing, as any good lingering place must be. Of course it’s also good for knitting! I hope to be getting some good knitting done this weekend again.
Today’s recipe really is called “Yummy Salad”. That’s not a very creative title, but it is a good salad. You can also add in some cooked chicken to make it into a meal.
1 head lettuce (bite-sized pieces)
1 head cauliflower (bite-sized pieces)
2 cups Miracle Whip
1/2 to 1 lb. bacon, fried crisp and crumbled
1/2 med. purple onion, chopped
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup Parmesan Cheese
1 cup dried cranberries
(next time I think I’ll also add some sliced almonds. It would give this a good crunch. I’ll have to pick up a bag the next time I’m at the store use one of the seven bags in the pantry, FPS.)
Mix the Parmesan Cheese with the Miracle Whip. Layer the lettuce, cauliflower, Miracle Whip mix, bacon, onion and sugar. Cover and refrigerate. Toss just before serving.
Tonight we have “Senior Celebration” for Knitting Daughter. I can’t believe that she is graduating from high school in just over a week. That means that, come Fall, WH and I will be Empty Nesters. Boy, did those 18 years fly by. (I have to keep telling myself that it’s a good thing when they grow up and you’re proud of them and they move on to the next stage in their lives. Right?) I think I’ll head out to the porch and “linger” a bit with Zoe. She likes to linger out there, too.

Looks like a lovely place to have family time and I’ll bet the kids come back more often than you’d think to ‘linger’ with you both. They’ll say they miss the cats, but they really miss the you and DH.
ps – the salad sounds yummy :^)

Hmm, for lingering, I guess, my knitting area, or the back deck. I love your back porch, is does look inviting, both, as a place to gather and relax. Congratulations to Knitting Daughter. I still have 10yrs for my youngest to finish, and my oldest will graduate next year.

oh – and I’m starting a lovely scarf out of the Claudia –> her friend –> turns out to be Wendy’s pattern. I ordered some lovely purple from you a while ago – I have to find the label – and I think it is going to be a wonderful fit of pattern to yarn.

Your porch makes me wish I had one. I have what could best be described as a front “stoop.” I don’t linger much at my house and usually when I do it’s in the recliner with the dog, the cat and my knitting. We have a new coffeehouse here where I keep thinking that I’ll go linger. It’s nice, has comfortable chairs and couches, good coffee and music and smoke-free. I just haven’t gotten there yet.
Still working on Mr Greenjeans, my “Mr Greenjeans” sock and my Opal toe-ups. I’m also working on a prayer shawl and a preemie hat. I hope to finish my sweater by the end of the week so I can wake up the one that’s hibernating.
Have a great weekend!! Linger a while (you deserve it)!

lingering and knitting. Now if I just had time to linger and knit!!
Congratulations to your daughter. I have one more to go! My middle son will graduate from college at the same time my youngest will leave high school!

We just finished our first year as empty nesters and it was wonderful! Yes, we missed our youngest son but we settled into a delightful routine and did some wonderful things together without worrying about anyone’s schedule but ours. Our youngest son has just come home from college, so we are re-adjusting once again, but it is great too! Enjoy!

Your porch looks wonderful, I like to sit on my back porch by the pool in the summer. When you get too hot you just jump in. I have a comfy chair to put my feet up on and I read or knit. The dogs love to sit out with me. And swim with me too!

Hmmmmmmmm, A place to linger. Right now its my living room with the window and door open. I usualy sit at my comp desk with messenger up chatting with my mom while I knit and browse blogs and Ravelry. We are gonna be fixing the front proch prob this fall and winter (after the waspies and bees go away) and then the front proch will become a good lingering spot. I am busily planting more garden spaces with flowers in front of the porch so we will be able to linger, eat and smell/see the pretty flowers as they bloom each year
My son will be graduating in 4 yrs from HS, he starts his Freshman yr of HS this coming fall so we have a few yrs yet to enjoy him bein home. The only thing that will prevent us becoming “empty nesters” when he goes off to college is the cats, we have 4 ranging in age from 11 to 7 months so they will be around for awhile!

You know, I actually don’t really have a designated lingering area as I live in a fairly small one bedroom apartment. But, that’s okay – looking into buying, so will have a room dedicated to knitting and lingering! : )
Congratulations to Knitting Daughter on her high school graduation. You are correct, time does fly.
And, I hope you have a Happy Mother’s Day!! : )

I am in a senior center and I have three rooms. I really miss my condominum.
I had a beautiful agragate patio with a big tree in the middle. The tree had tulips
around it and they came back every year. I never did anything to them. I miss
my planters and my flowers. I use to sit out there all the time. I didn’t knit
out there though because it was out in the open. I got to see a picture of your
receipe, but I didn’t get to see the porch. My son and daughter-in-law had
a screened in porch and we use to eat out there all the time. It was really
wonderful. Congratulations on KD’s graduation

Remember TC if you need a getaway to help you over the empty nest issue. I have a wrap-around front porch with wicker chairs. That is usually where I linger, well, more where I used to linger:)
Have fun knitting!

Reading about your porch makes me miss summer dinner out on the porch at my parents’ house! We live in an apartment building, so there aren’t really any outdoor areas that are “just ours”. I recently rearranged the furniture in our living room so I now have a designated spinning area, and I love to linger there! I have all my fiber stash, my spinning wheel and lazy kate, a small bookshelf for knitting books and magazines, and my knitting needle box all within arm’s reach.

I like to linger at your blog . . .
At home, I like to linger on the couch. Lucy is happy to lie across the back of the couch, or next to me, or in my lap, I’ve got my iMac right in front of me, knitting within easy reach, and usually a book and magazine as well.
Are you going to start calling Knitting Daughter “College Girl?”

I linger in my studio to be alone or on the living room couch to linger en masse. Our yard is in poor shape but I hope this summer to render it lingerable. I decided this was the year I needed to make a peaceful place in the back to sit and knit and spin. But it will need to be shaded for the summer. I’m toying with trying to get a greenhouse type extension of the house out there so that it can be lingerable in the winter too. But cleaning up the yard is fairly low expense while a greenhouse type extension.. isn’t.

The kitchen seems to be our lingering spot. Usually because I’m cooking dinner or we are playing cards at the dining room table. When friends come over, we linger outside in the garage or move the chairs outside, depending on the weather.
However, if I had your sun room, you can bet I would be lingering long time along with Chester and Bailey. Anything that gets the cats closer to the birds makes them very happy cats.
Congrats to KD for graduating high school, College Guy for making through another year of college and mostly to Sheri for raising two fine adults, having a great Loopy Ewe business, and keeping my feet warm. Happy Mom’s Day:-)))

What a beautiful back porch! We love to linger on the back porch as well (although ours is not quite as nice as yours. We’ve got 2 boys, 3 & 5. Needless to say, not much remains in “nice” condition in our home). We’ve got a collection of bird feeders in our back yard, and we love to sit and watch the birds come to feed. DH usually has a good book, I am knitting, and reading a good book, while the two wee bits are playing out in the yard.
I’m sure your daughter graduating is tough. I can only imagine……

Your porch looks so peaceful and inviting; no wonder you enjoy lingering there. It looks like it may be covered, too. Can you linger there in the rain? That is what I would love to do. We used to have a big covered porch and it was so lovely to sit there when it was raining or storming and watch all the green things growing. I’m hoping our back deck will be a place to linger. I haven’t really tired it yet because this is our first spring here, but it’s been a little chilly yet to spend much time sitting there. Our living room is perfect for lingering and knitting, though, especially on cold, snowy nights.

I saw the picture of your back porch and just sighed in contentment. It’s beautiful. I’ve always said I had three requirements for my house someday: a formal dining room, a piano room, and a library….but I think I’m going to add that picture of your porch as my fourth necessity.
Congratulations to wonderful KD

Hello to everyone! Ah, what a lovely deck to linger on. We are lucky enough to have a large deck, too and we linger on it a lot. I find myself out there after school, when I de stress with an iced tea. My twin sons, now 22 and not lingering much these days, used to ride their HOT WHEELs up and down this same deck, but now it is comforting and relaxing. Is it any wonder we love summer? School is out and I can knit what I want to, as well as to linger over a good book, and quietly look out over the creek at the end of our property. We had dinner several nights out there already. This week has been too cool, but better days are a comin’.
Congrats to Knitting Daughter, too. Good Luck with her future endeavors. Make Momma proud:) Take care everyone, and have a Happy Mother’s Day. We all deserve to have good memories to linger over on a relaxing evening on the back porch. Lots of love, Jo
I am just so delighted with the Spring Fling goody bag that I won for the random drawing. I finally can say that I understand what all the fuss is about Wollmeise…no wonder there is never any around! WOW! I love everything. Thanks so much! You all have to try that Everything Balm, too. It is worth its weight in gold. I am just delighted with everything. Maybe one day I’ll get to go to a Spring Fling myself!
I have to try the salad…looks yummy and EASY. I do EASY a lot

Our oldest son just graduated from Michigan Tech with 2 separate BS degrees last Saturday. He’s moving on to his first full-time job, in one of his fields, so he’s excited about that! Husband and 2 younger sons and I went up for his graduation. We love the beautiful area up there, but we are looking forward to having him close enough to home that he can now make it home for occasional weekends when he wants too! Places to linger include: F5 thread, picnic tables outside my building at work with a nice cup of iced coffee, my papasan chair with some knitting.

I don’t have much of an outside lingering spot (condo and too close to the freeway so not as quiet as I’d like). But…given the weather here in Seattle, I have many opportunities to linger in front of my fireplace with a good Pine Mountain Log crackling away. I have only cats, but we all share a giant fleece covered “dog bed” that doubles as a cat lounge and human mom back toasting spot (while knitting or reading). It also makes a rather excellent nap spot in the winter!
We’ll probably do a little toasting there tomorrow given the forecast.

I like to linger on the wicker love seat in my apartment living room, looking out onto the courtyard and listening to the birds, unless one of my cats is sitting on the love seat first. In that case, I get to sit on the floor and admire the cat while I knit. (When my “economic stimulus” check arrives, I’m hoping to linger at TLE and in front of a nice entry-level spinning wheel…)

Ohhh, yes – that back porch is a place I would love to linger as well. At present, living in a house we are building/finishing ourselves whilst living in it which means space is more of a thought than a reality – it is my bed. I love to wake up (okay, not really, I despise it, actually) and sit in my warm, cozy blankets, sipping the first cup of coffee and getting my knitting done – it makes me a better person for the remainder of the day.
And, on the nest empty – I hear you. I keep telling myself to look forward to those steps because I know they are great and important for the kiddos but – a little and sometimes not so little voice within is wailing in pain. Mother Theresa once said that being a mother is like tearing your hear out and wearing it on your sleeve. Happy Mom’s Day, Sheri!

My favorite lingering place is in the backyard. We made a little “garden” and put pots of flowers, hanging baskets, birdfeeders, squirrel feeder, and my glider, chair and table. We have stepping stones to the sandbox (for the dogs) and to the birdbath. It is shady and cool. My pups like to linger there, too.

Your back porch sounds terrific! I’m lucky to have the whole downstairs of the house I share with my mother to myself, so I have little lingering spots wherever there is a window! Something about basking in little patches of sunlight and being able to see what’s going on outside just makes me happy. I have a north-facing window in my bedroom with a big comfy white chair right under it for sitting and knitting, and the window is street-level so I can be nosy at the same time, lol! Then I’m in the process of finding a chair to go in my soon-to-be “stash room” to go under THAT window (south-facing).
