Namaste Bags and a CONTEST!
Have I mentioned before that I have a bag problem, issues with too many bags, more bags than I could ever use, a lovely collection of knitting bags? I think bags appeal to my “I want to be organized” nature. Or my “Oh, isn’t that beautiful? I need that.” nature. Therefore, we tend to carry a lot of different bag options for you at The Loopy Ewe, and I have personally tested and used each type. (Yeah, that’s it. I NEED to be testing all of these lines….) At the moment, I have three favorites (and I’m fickle. This will change with the wind.) I love my Offhand Designs Weekender bag. I packed this one to the gills and took it with us on Spring Break. It holds so much, and it’s in my favorite colors, Peppermint Mocha. (They call it Ruby Splash, but it’s clearly Peppermint Mocha.) We got a lot of different
fabrics in, but I went for that one right out of the box. Another favorite is my new Atenti bag, which arrived last week. I will admit to having trouble picking out the one I wanted, because they’re all so cute. I picked Pops, but I have my eye on two others as well. This is another bag that would hold a whole weeks worth of knitting if you were to take it on vacation. (It also makes a great carry-on bag if you fly.) The fabrics are gorgeous and the workmanship is top notch. I love this new line. A lot of you are getting these in the mail this week and I know you’re going to be so happy with them. We have another order to put in with them already. My other favorite bag is my Namaste Laguna bag that I just received in the new Peacock color.
I like how soft the animal-friendly faux leather is, I like that I can just wipe it off with a damp sponge if someone’s Latte should happen to drip, and I like how roomy it is inside. We just got a whole new shipment of all of the colors (and the new Newport Style bag) in and put them all up today. I know you’ve been waiting on them! (Several of you also have bag problems lovely knitting bag collections, and I like that about you.) Oh – and the Red Canvas Loopy Sock Bags are back in stock, too. Another bag that I like….
Remember that Little Loopy mentioned that we have Elf Cassie working here for the summer? Cassie is in college and will be getting married this summer (but we get to keep her until August). Her brother and sister have taken to calling her “Keebz”, since she’s a Loopy Elf and they liken that to the Keebler Elves. (Doesn’t that sound like a brother/sister thing to do?) They bought her a fun shower gift – a Loopy T-Shirt – and they personalized the back for her. Here she is showing the front and the back in the photo. We thought it was really cute and made her wear it around Loopy Central today. (Does that make her fiance “Mr. Keebz”? Just wondering.)
Today’s recipe is a delicious Macaroni and Cheese dish that takes comfort food to a whole new level. YUM!!
1 pound pasta (corkscrew holds the sauce on best, but use your favorite)
4 slices day old bread
1 Tbl. extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 lb. mozzarella cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
1/2 lb. cheddar cheese, grated (about 3 cups)
1/2 lb. Gruyere cheese, grated (about 3 cups)
1/2 lb. fontina or provolone cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
1/2 lb. bacon, cut into 1 ” strips
10 Tbl. butter (unsalted)
3 1/2 cups milk
1/3 cup flour
Stir fry bacon pieces in a large saute pan until done. Remove to drain on paper towels. Chop bread by hand or in a food processor until crumbly. Add 2 Tbl. bacon drippings to 3 Tbl. butter in a pan, and toss in bread crumbs. Stir until they are lightly golden and crisp. Set aside.
Cheese Sauce: Heat milk over medium heat (do not boil). Melt 6 Tbl. butter in a separate saucepan and whisk in flour until smooth. Whisk in warmed milk next and cook until it starts to thicken (stirring occasionally.) Remove from heat and add in your cheeses, stirring until melted. Add bacon and salt and pepper to taste.
Cook pasta about 8-9 minutes in a large pot of salted water. Drain and rinse with cold water. Add pasta to cheese combination and stir well. Put in 9 x 13 pan and top with bread crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until hot and bubbling.
June Blog Contest: I know you’re not supposed to view food as “comfort” – any smart dieter will tell you that. Nevertheless, there are some foods (like mac and cheese) that just DO make you feel better.
At least until you get on the scale again. Leave a comment and let us know what your favorite comfort food is – this could be something that you like to eat now, or something that you liked to eat growing up. We’ll use the random number generator to pick a winner next Friday from all of the comments. (The winners of our monthly blog contests receive a $30 gift certificate to The Loopy Ewe. Maybe you need a new bag??)

My fave comfort food is a hamburger-corn casserole that was a staple at my house growing up. chopped meat, noodles, cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soups, a can of corn…mix it all up and bake. It was so good! and leftovers tasted even better. oh, yum.

I find any kind of potato dish comforting, but especially mashed or scalloped potatoes. Not great for the waistline, but oh-so-yummy!

I like a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup. The soup has upgraded from Campbell’s condensed to Trader Joe’s Organic Tomato over the years, but the sandwich has to be white bread and american cheese, toasted in a pan with lots of butter. And the sandwich crusts must be dipped in the soup.

Anything that reminds me of the foods made by my grandmothers – takes me back to a very happy place in my life – both were great women who I miss greatly. My American grandmother made fantastic baked beans and my Swedish grandmother made great meatball (what else?) but of course anything they made was made with so much love it had to be good.

P.S. I have a bag issue too!!

Gorgeous bags! My yarn problem is much bigger than my bag problem as of now, but that could change at any time.
My comfort food is an easy choice: when I need to relax I make Campbell’s tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Dip the sammie in the soup and I am in heaven.

My favorite comfort food was made by my mother while I was growing up. Of course, the fact that it was made by my mother was part of the comfort. It was her homemade vegetable beef soup. She would start with beef soup bones and cook them in a huge kettle of water until the meat actually fell off the bone. She would let everything cool overnight, then skim the fat off the top the next morning. Then she would add all sorts of chopped vegies, and let the whole kettle simmer on low all day. The smell was divine, and it nourished both body and soul. I can still smell it, and it evokes the most wonderful memories of my mother. I’ve tried duplicating her recipe many times, but it just isn’t the same. I always felt so secure and loved after a bowl of her soup.

My current favorite comfort food is the banana and strawberry crepe at Bob Evans. My office has recently moved and the Bob Evans is within walking distance, so…. It’s a wonderfully light dish with just enough fruit and very delicate cream cheese filling. It makes a great breakfast or brunch dish! I don’t do crepes at home often – too much work, so it’s been a treat to find them out in a place close by that doesn’t cost a fortuune!

Growing up I remember my Mom trying to make the famous “tuna casserole” with the potato chip topping..needless to say it didn’t go over very well with my potato/meat eating/gravy Dad…now that’s what I love to make..w/o the chip topping. Something about the creamy noodles with tuna warming my insides. It’s good with a salad!! and warm toastie bread! YUMMMIE Gotta have something good!! I love those bags..everyone needs a bag collection!!
I also love homemade chocolate brownies!! That was one of my favorites also. Guess I better stop

My all time favorite meal is a casserole called “Turkette.” I’ve heard it pronounced “turketti” but I say ‘turkette.’ It has 1 box vermicelli, cooked al dente, cooked cubed turkey or chicken(great with leftover barbecued chicken), a green pepper or 2, a small or medium onion, a small can of mushrooms(or 2, I love mushrooms), about a cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 can of cream of mushroom(or my favorite celery) soup. Mix it all together, bake in oven at 350-75 for about 45-50 minutes. The great thing is it’s very adaptable: add some cooked broccoli or peas, change up the amount of cheese, use a different type of pasta…
There you have it, the best recipe my grandmother ever shared with me. I think it was her favorite meal & I remember when we first made it together. Good times. Whenever I have it, I think of my Nana & how much I miss her.
And now I’m hungry.

REAL comfort food — mmmmashed potatoes, mashed, not whipped (my husband the chef and I have a difference of opinion about this, I think they get gluey when whipped!); mashed well with a bit of half & half & butter. Then, even though there’s butter in it, if I’m really in need of comfort, I make a little spoon well in the middle and let a little more butter melt in it.
Yep, good Minnesota/Wisconsin girl here, can you tell?!
I have that Laguna bag, it’s great.

I’ve never entered one of your contests before but this one had me thinking. Between the Keebler Elves and comfort food all I can think of now is a Goober Grape Sandwich. Remember Goober? Peanut Butter & Jelly striped together in a clear glass jar. It seemed so wrong but spread it on a slice of white wonder bread and it became oh-so-right. Now that’s comfort food. Disgusting to other people, but sticky and satisfying to me. Wanna make it even better? Add Marshmallow Fluff to the sandwich. Mmmm….

Recipe
fry a chopped onion in a little oil til soft, add farfalle(the bow pasta) and diced potatoes together with enough stock to cover. Pref chicken stock or water and stock cube. Add sage. Cook until pasta and potatoes are cooked. Take off heat and add grated parmesan cheese and a knob of butter. Divine:0

Anyway – comfort foods! I love the tuna noodle casserole my mother made us for dinner when we were growing up. Just thinking about it makes me happy. I tried making it myself, but mine never quite tasted like hers – I guess she added a magic ingredient of some sort!

My favorite comfort food is “Pig Pen Toast”! Very simple. Make 2 slices of toast, spread with butter or margarine, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, cut off crusts and cut each piece of toast in 4 strips and arrange on plate with 2 “slats’ about 2 inches apart, place next 2 slices on ends to make a “box” and continue until all the toast is arranged. Tastes best served to someone laying on the couch under a big snuggly quilt……the last time I had it that was was a number of years ago……

My first favorite comfort food is Mallomars. I love them. I don’t eat them all the time–they’re just a special treat I buy for myself about once a year when they are on a 2-fer sale. Then I eat the 2 boxes over a few days. It takes about a year for me to lose those calories then I’m off to buy 2 more boxes
My second favorite comfort food is steamed chicken the way my mom made it, mostly because I love chicken and because no one makes it the way my mom did.

My favorite comfort food is “heart attack on a plate” (as my husband refers to it) also known as CHEESE FRIES. I love Ruby Tuesday’s the most, because they have less calories but they’re just as wonderful. Outback has great ones too, as does Chilis. I do eat them without sour cream or ranch, so they’re better for me, right??

The best comfort food for me was my mom’s fried chicken and Southern spoon bread. She would pan-fry the chicken, then it went into a big pot on the stove to sit and get tender. The result was chicken that pretty much fell off the bones and tasted wonderful.
Her spoon bread came from a recipe my dad’s uncle from Virginia had given her. It’s a cornbread base with whipping cream and I forget what else. Bake it up and it’s light and fluffy and wonderful. She’d spoon it out into individual bowls, then we’d add butter and maple syrup. Totally delicious.
This is the meal she used to make when I’d come home from college. I confess that I have no idea how to make the chicken as good as she did and although I have the spoon bread recipe, I’ve never made it. Maybe that’s a good thing, considering the calories we must have consumed in one sitting!

My favorite comfort food is Tuna Casserole – drained tuna, macaroni noodles, cream of mushroom soup, a bit of milk to thin out the soup, salt & pepper, and baked in the oven until nice and warm. I know it’s “bad” but when I’m really down, I’ll pour a big glass of milk & put on a sappy movie and eat the casserole right out of the dish. Mmmm, comforting.

At my house it was called Cinnamon-Toast-Crispy, not to be confused with the sickly sweet breakfast cardboard-er-cereal. My dad would make toast, butter it, sprinkle on a little cinnamon and a LOT of sugar and then break out the kitchen torch (if mom wasn’t home, if she was the toast would go under the broiler) and caramelize the sugar. It’s the creme brule method of toast making and absolutely the best thing ever!

And, chicken & dumplings are great, too, as is Texas BBQ and fresh shrimp or crab (not lobster)!
I love it when you print recipes for us! Yum! We are going to make a takeoff on one you printed earlier. We are going to take the Tollhouse Pan Cookie recipe, remove the chocolate chips, and replace them with white chocolate chips & dried cherries! We’ve made it before, & it is wonderful!

For me, there is no food quite as comforting as my mum’s Scotch broth. It’s a little different every time, but you can always count on it being warm and filling. It’s always better the second day than the first, and it’s always made in an enormous pot that will sit, bubbling on the stove for most of the day.
I tried to make it myself once, but it just wasn’t the same. Of course, my mum says hers isn’t quite as good as her own mum’s was.

Finally! And easy one to answer! Mom’s Beef Stew with rolls! All full of things that aren’t on my diet right now! My Mom makes this for me every year for my b-day, along with a speckled angel food cake w/ berries. All of us kids have a special thing that Mom makes that she makes just special for us each year.
I hope I am making a memory like that with my Boys!?

I have a lot of comfort foods, but homemade mac & cheese is definitely #1, followed closely by mashed potatoes and rounding out the top 3, McDonalds. I KNOW, I KNOW so gross and evil and I don’t indulge often, but seriously, a quarter pounder with cheese, fries, and an ice cold coke? Heaven.

Comfort food? Yep, food is definitely comfort. At that point, you just have to watch how MUCH comfort you get, know what I mean?
Let’s see:
- Spaghetti with meat sauce and extra cheese
- Ice cream
- Aunt Mary Lee’s Chili
- Chocolate brownies
That’s probably my top 4. There are others.

I can still make myself sick on French Onion dip, but nothing beats Mom’s. She made her own with Lipton’s dry onion soup mix & real sour cream, always heavy on the soup mix so the flavor was extra-rich. We spent a lot of nights together watching movies on cable (pre-VHS) nibbling on rippled potato chips and her dip.

Oddly enough, my favorite comfort food now is something I completely loathed as a child. My mom used to make chipped beef on toast every so often when I was younger and I couldn’t stand it. I love it now though. And guess what??? My kids don’t like it any better than I did when I was younger. LOL

Many of my favs have already been mentioned–grilled cheese with tomato soup, mac ‘n cheese…but if I’m really down-in-the-dumps and need a pick-me-up, it’s (I hope you are sitting dowsn!) a small bowl of chocolate chips and a spoon heaped with peanut butter! Dip the spoon into the chips, eat, repeat. Sigh. Just save it for times of real crisis!

And I’m moving soon…which has nothing to do with comfort food. Except there is a room off my new kitchen that has all these built-in shelves and drawers…that’s gonna be my knitting room! I have to share with the cats, though. Windows onto the back yard mean lots of bird watching for my babies.

I have to agree with mac and cheese as my favourite comfort food. My mom made the best mac and cheese and I always loved it when I saw that she was making it for dinner. I try to imitate it but somehow it’s never quite as good as hers. Sometimes I’ll make it for lunch for the girls and me in the winter, and I make warm chocolate pudding for dessert, and that’s the ultimate comfort food lunch on a cold gray day.
I’m really trying not to look too closely at those beautiful bags, since we both know that I share the bag affinity too. I’m staying loyal to my Ham’s Jam bag!

I have several favorite foods that bring me comfort whenever I eat them.
1)My Grandma’s Homemade Chocolate Chip cookies…I still raid the cookie jar whenever we go to her house and she nearly always has some homemade cookies there, of course my son does the same thing and even beats me to it once in a while:-)
2) My Mom’s Tuna Cassarole! I’ve adapted the recipe over theyears to beter suit mine and Brians tastes but everyonce in a while you have to have a dose of your Mommy’s cooking.
3) Stroganoff…and not fat free either!! I use full fat Sour Cream 2 16oz containers worth pork stew meat and mushrooms. when it is done and the Noodles have cooked it gets mixed together and served out into bowls. Even better is the next day and leftovers (I’ll eat it cold or warmed I dont care either way its yummmmmy)
Last but certainly not least…My Grandpa’s favorite snack (he died when I was 6mo) Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwhiches. Creamy Peanut butter, sliced Nanners, and white bread ahhhhhhhhh Heaven!

My all-time favorite comfort food is chicken & dumplings (rolled dumplings, not drop dumplings). My grandma used to make them for me – she boiled chicken to make her own broth, and then rolled out the Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits in a can (in our family we call them “whomp-em” biscuits because you “whomp” the can on the counter to open it) to make the dumplings. I have learned to cheat by using canned chicken broth mixed with cream of chicken soup, so I don’t have to boil chicken all day, but it’s just not quite the same as when grandma made them.

Mac and cheese, definitely. Unfortunately, when I was a kid my mom would make it with four different cheeses in this awesome way that made it all crispy and brown on top and for the first 15 years of my life or so, I thought that was how all mac and cheese was made. Long story short, I’m now spoiled for life and can only stand really, really fantastic mac and cheese.

Pineapple upside-down cake. And it has to have maraschino cherries in the center of each pineapple slice. My mother made it every couple of months, and I could be counted on to pig-out on it. She always used the drained pineapple juice in place of part of the liquid in the cake. I don’t need a big piece. Just a taste of the pineapple, brown sugar and cake is enough to soothe me. Hi Sheri!
Thanks again for ANOTHER blog contest.
My favorite comfort food is really any food. I like it all. I guess if I have to pick one thing, it would be carbs…pasta, potatoes, bread, crust (empty or full or pie), cake (iced and plain), fruit, cookies (especially those baked in December), rice, dumplings. There I think I covered most carbs. Of course, those are all mostly “bad” things to eat if you are trying to watch your waist-line…which I do on most days. But I just don’t understand why all those “bad” things taste so good. It’s a good thing that yarn isn’t really edible, huh?
Have a wonderful weekend!

Mashed potatoes. Hands down, no ifs, ands or buts. Mashed potatoes. Peel ‘em, chunk ‘em up, boil ‘em, mash ‘em (can use a hand mixer); add the milk (normal old whole milk is just fine–no need to junk ‘em up with half-and-half or cream), butter, salt and lots of pepper and then whip them using a fork (no hand mixer at this stage–it just glugs ‘em all up). Use the fork to eat ‘em straight from the pan. Ah my carefree single days when this used to be dinner. Some things I miss very much.

Hi Sheri,
Your Mac n Cheese looks delish! I think I will have to try it out. Maybe once it cools down out here – we’re in the middle of a heat wave (108 F) this week.
My favorite comfort foods (I can’t have just one) are:
1. My mom’s rice cassarole
2. My mom’s turkey and barley soup
3. Warm brownies and milk
4. Miso soup and tempura (I’m Japanese-American, it’s a cultural thing)

My grandma made pasta. She also had to translate for her mother, who didn’t speak English, just the Italian. She taught her daughter to make sauce. Mom served spaghetti with meat sauce every Thursday night except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Without fail. (Of course, we all wore white on Thursdays. Also without fail. No matter how much we knew better.) She taught her daughter how to make sauce.
I took grandma’s formula and mom’s formula and tweaked them both. And there’s still nothing better, IMHO, than a big steaming plate of pasta, covered in thick, red sauce. Sometimes it has meatballs in it, sometimes mushrooms. Sometimes nothing but the tomatoes, garlic, and onions.
My daughter lives on the stuff. And I’m sure she’ll put her own take on it in due time.

Um…that is a hard one as there are so many option but I will got with hamburger biscuit casserole. Brown some hamburger and boil some potatoes (cut into bite size chunks). Drain and mix with cheese sauce. Put in a casserole dish and cover with homemade biscuits (or Bisquick drop biscuits) and bake until the biscuits are golden brown. The cheese sauce will be bubbly and fabulous and when you eat it you might think you are in comfort food heaven.

My favourite comfort food is definitely fresh baked bread.
My gentleman just bought me a bread maker for my Birthday and while I feel a little guilty at taking the easy option, it’s winter hear and too cold for my regular recipes to rise.
I have to admit, though, that I’m eating more bread than ever before, but it’s delicious soy linseed, so I don’t care!

I have to say chips/crisps are a major comfort food, as are blueberries when in season.
Comfort food to me is something I can easily grab and munch rather than a full meal.
Other favorites are:
Baskin Robbin’s Cherries Jubilee Ice Cream — I stop by and get a container of this — my other favorites are Gold Medal Ribbon and Chocolate and Peanut Butter. Eating from the tub in mandatory.
Highly recommended for chocolate lovers is a See’s candy bar with toffee chunks (west coast only I guess). Although pricier than a Hershey’s, they are cheap enough to not feel like you can’t spoil yourself. It’s really easy to eat a whole one in under a minute if you’re not careful.
And yeah, it really is worth searching out the good treats.

My favorite comfort food? A tuna melt (tuna salad, swiss cheese grilled on rye), dill pickle and home fries. Another favorite is my homemade vegetable soup – a meal in itself, with short ribs so tender they fall off the bone and lots of veggies.
I’m a bag freak, too. I’m waiting for my next consulting check to order one of the bags you’ve got featured. It won’t be an easy choice!

So difficult to choose. Unfortunately, I grew up in a household where food itself was often a comfort, whereas my new husband grew up with a mother who ate macrobiotically. I took PBJ and mac and cheese and such for school lunches, while he ate seaweed and sprouts and tofu and such. Poor guy. Can you imagine lunchtime in elementary school???
Anyway, my own favorite comfort foods would either be mashed potatoes (yes, I prefer the whipped kind with butter, some salt and pepper, and a bit of evaporated milk. The other thing I tend to reach for is, like many others, macaroni and cheese or perhaps a grilled cheese sandwich with rich tomato soup. (We call them “toasted cheese sandwiches where I come from).
Clearly, I’m a carbaholic. =)

It’s basically a load of yellow squash, cheddar cheese, diced sweet onions and green peppers, some mayo, i think an egg, and then more cheese and breadcrumbs with some butter on top. Wow, that’s a hard one. Grilled cheese is a perennial favorite. And the favorite Texas comfort food nibble has to be chile con queso made with Velveeta and a can of Ro-Tel tomatoes and green chiles all melted together and served with tortilla chips.
But, in the summer, my favorite thing to eat that always brightens my day is tomatoes. But not just any tomatoes. I either want the ones I grow, or, if they aren’t ready yet then I want Bettye’s Tomatoes from the Farmer’s Market. And Texas peaches. And blueberries. Preferably cobblerized ;>
And ginormous glasses of iced tea to wash it all down!

Comfort foods for me depend on the time of day and the mood I suppose…
Morning, it’s definitely a nice hot hazelnut latte (or iced if it’s hot out) and a bagel. Depends on the day as to what I want on it…
Afternoon, tomato soup and grilled cheese… mmmmmmm (although it’s not Campbell’s anymore, these days it’s Pacific brand organic roasted red pepper and tomato.)
At night, rich chocolaty brownies… the more chocolate the better…. turtle or german chocolate are awesome!

For me, comfort food is very simple, something someone else makes. Nothing fancy, really. My youngest grandaughter and I share another comfort food, buttered saltines. My mother would make these for us when we were sickly and put them under the broiler until they were warm and bubbly and just a little toasty. Yummmmm. Emily and I eat them cold, without the broiler step. (we can’t wait).
I love all the bags, but would generally spend my money on what I could tuck into them.

Oh comfort foods, where shall I begin? When I’m down and out, and not feeling well, I like the comfort of my mother’s Chicken corn soup – it’s PA dutch. Chicken in a chicken base, of course, with corn (usually frozen off the cob), and rivels (little hunks of dough), with parsley, and salt. It’s just delicious, and try as I may, I cannot replicate her soup, even using the exact recipe…………Gosh, my mom is great!

My fave is graham crackers and milk. Whenever I just want to sit and veg (not as often anymore with knitting, heh heh, but I can’t nom on yarn for sustenance), I pull out the Honey Grahams. One cello-wrapped package is all it takes. I pour milk into a clear glass mug that I’ve specified (in my head only) especially for this purpose, grab a plate to hold the package of crackers and to catch any crumbs, then go find a comfy place.
I sit on the floor with back against the couch or balance the plate and cup on my lap while internetting. Taking the single cracker in hand, I crack it in half along the perforations then double it up to crack again. Four rectangles in hand sandwiched together go down to the depths of the moo juice. Ahh, not long enough to fall apart and just long enough to still have some – just a little – crumble crunch. I lift to my mouth, and nom down without really chewing. Ummm. That’s so good. Lick the fingers and proceed to the next wafer please!
I hope I never grow up!

Comfort food? Chili! Pop it all in the crockpot before work and then pick up a fresh loaf of bread at the bakery on the way home. Come home, freshen the loaf in the oven for about 10 mins and dish out that chili. Yummy! And after dinner? Anything chocolate will do, but hot chocolate chip cookies from the oven are the best to snuggle with a fresh cup of coffee.

I have a cookie recipe that I got from a murder mystery novel (of all places… the heroine is a caterer). In my version, there are milk chocolate chips, craisins, coconut, and cashews. I don’t make them often, because I inhale them when I do… I just can’t stop. Everyone I have given them to loves them, too.

Favorite comfort food? My mom’s brownies – she used the Chocolate Syrup recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook, which makes a big ‘ol baking sheet full of brownies with a thick fudgy frosting on top. She’d make these practically every rainy day when we were kids (in southern California, rainy days are big deals!), so the whole house smelled like chocolate when we’d come in. Thanks for all the great memories, Sheri!

When I was in first grade, they asked us our favorite foods. Mine was “Broccoli and Mashed Potatoes” It still is. I can justify the butter in the potatoes with the broccoli, but not if I add cheese.
Also Nestle Toll house Chocolate Chip Cookies…. They were the kind that my mom makes, and taught me to make.
I have a rule about bags. I have a Rubbermaid tub in the closet. When I ‘need’ a new bag, I look there first and sometimes I can find something I’ll use. If I can’t, then the new bag is designated ‘different’ and therefore justifiable.

Most comfort foods are the wrong things to eat, especially when depressed. And my favorites are no exception: Bud Light Beer and a package of Doritos Corn Chips (a big bag, no less!). My family could/can always tell if my spirits are really down, because that’s when I come home with the six-pack and the chips. I usually only drink one of the cans of beer, but eat a lot of chips, and that sends the blood pressure skyrocketing! Thankfully, these periods of needing the comfort food are far lower now that I’ve retired from the Legal Office I used to work in. Spending time at home knitting socks makes me feel MUCH better now.

I struggled with this answer…. seriously, I love food… how can I pick one dish!!! That’s almost blasphemy!
So, I thought about it…. there’s one food that Mom would make, (and still does) that I love above everything else. I think even though I do the recipe just like she does, I like hers better. Also, I could eat a ton of this even if I was already full, just because I didn’t want to miss out!…. It’s Mom’s Green Bean Casserole! OMG! It’s so yummy! Usually for Thanksgiving I only eat the sides and make that 2 servings of GBC thank you very much!!! It’s the best!!

The second is a tofu scramble–hash browns, diced baked tofu, and eggs, washed down with grapefruit juice. I can eat this every day!

My favorite “comfort food” is bean soup. My dad used to make it when I was growing up. It was inexpensive and easy for him to make. He’d start it the night before and leave it cooking in the the crock pot all day long. I’d come home after a long, cold day and share soup and cornbread with him. (We lived in Ohio, and it could get really cold in the winter!)
Thanks for bringing back cozy memories!

Easy: my fish pie. Two types of haddock and lots of fresh prawns, cooked in cream and full fat milk, then strained. With the milk you make a roux, add the fish, then top it with cheesy mashed potatoes. The whole dish has ‘heart attack’ written all over it but it’s my favourite fish dish. Last time I made it, I got my partner to buy the fish for it and he loves experimenting, so we had 4 or 5 different types of fish in it. That was probably the best one I’ve ever made. Yum.

My favorite comfort food has got to be my Dad’s lobster chowder (yes, I’m east coast Canadian) For years I can remember my sister & I sitting at the counter watching him bring home the lobster, carefully taking the rubber bands off the claws & them plunging them into the boil. Once fully cooked we always got a handful or two of the steaming meat, but we allllll looked so forward to that chowder…loads of cream and real butter….Hmmmm, lots of memories.
We still flock to the house once & awhile for a good feed, he’s an amazing cook and a wonderful Father who loved to see his girls “EAT”!
Thanks,

I was at my friends on the weekend and she served this cake and my first words were “This is comfort food!”
So here it is, you take 1 packet instant chocolate pudding mix, 1 packet chocolate cake mix, 1 packet dark chocolate chips and mix it up with 11/2 – 2 cups of milk and then bake for 30-40 mins in a moderate oven.
Delicious!

I would consider Just about any of my “favorites” that my Mom cooked as comfort foods. Her fried chicken (no skin) was wonderful as were her thin pork chops. She made the best beef stroganoff ever. Also, when she made a pie she would make me little “cinnamon rolls” out of the extra pie crust that was trimmed off.
If I am feeling under the weather, a comforting food to have now is mashed potatoes and brown gravy or chicken pot pie.

Hello to all…..WoW! I really love those bags…another wish list entry…I just got out from school on the 17, and needed some time to just rest. I made 5 baby afghans for preggie teachers the past 6 months besides countless socks and I am really wanting to do something for me…one gets very CRANKY when one does not do something for moi once and a while. So I am finally finishing this black mohair and dark blue, green, purple, and fushia wool, silk etc…shawl that is 30x going to be 74 inches of heaven if …no when I get it done. I am trying, believe me…every night in front of the fan on an ottoman, because it is so long….I wish I could sent you all a photo, but I am not that experienced on the computer, hence no photos.
Well, I have 58 inches as of last night…yes…there is an end to this and I would LOVE to take it to the Cape on vacation…..cross those fingers ladies……my comfort food is definitely macaroni and cheese but it is my Mom’s recipe and it is not baked but cooked in a pot on the stove and is different. She cooked a box of elbows, drained them. While th elbows were still draining, in the same pot she added a diced onion, 2 diced cloves of gralic in some olive oil..not much and browned it all. Then she added a can of stewed tomatoes, let that cook a bit more and added 3/4 cup of sugar, some salt and pepper to taste, and 1/4 cup parsley…dried or fresh. Then she added a whole package of American Cheese slices, one slice at a time until it melted…then added the elbows, mixed it until it was hot…and that is the very best mac and cheese around! But I will be making that mac and cheese you posted – yummy!

My all-time favorite comfort food is the bread pudding at Donna’s Restaurants/Cafes in Baltimore, Maryland. I haven’t had it in years, but I’ll never forget it. There’s an Indian restaurant here in Northfield that makes a great kheer, and I do also like the stand-by macaroni and cheese and chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven with a tall glass of milk. Nothing beats that bread pudding for a hard day in grad school, though.

My mother has a recipe for pierogie lasagna that is apparently divine but she isn’t sharing yet – I’ll have to raid her recipe book next time I’m home! Mac & cheese is my husband’s favourite so I’m sure we’ll be trying your version out in the next few weeks

Baked Fudge – my 96 year old friend Juanita makes this when our stitch group begs for it, which is at least once a month! It’s not really fudge, more like a brownie outside, with a thick hot fudge-like inside. It’s delicious with walnuts, and best served warm with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of cool whip – YUM!

I still love my mother’s “beans and bas”–no doubt a phonetic approximation of my Italian grandmother’s “beans and pasta”–shell macaroni tossed with cannellini beans, garlic, and olive oil–and lots of grated parmesan! As an adult, I’ve classed it up a bit with red pepper flakes and some sauteed spinach, but it’s still a basic weeknight meal–and what I crave when I’ve had a bad day. However, mine never comes out as comforting as Mom’s!

Two unbeatable comfort foods: stuffed pizza, and Guy’s Tasty Mix. The Guy’s is only available in the Midwest, and it’s got cheese puffs, pretzels, cheerios, nuts, cheese crackers, and about a pound of salt per bag. Hard to eat either when knitting, but it’s worth putting down the needles to flex your hands and wrists to grab some of this.

Gosh. It’s mashed potatoes all the way. It doesn’t matter if it is made from real mashed potatoes or the Betty Crocker potatoes (I am partial to the Roasted Garlic flavor made by reversing the quantities of milk and water and loading it with butter…).
I have a recipe for mashed potatoes that uses my crockpot, so it is great for those days when I need the comfort (though obviously not right away) and want the house to remain at a nice normal temperature!

Oh gosh, I love bags too! But I’m supposed to be talking about food….
I don’t know if I should even admit to this, but I think my secret naughty comfort food is probably cookie dough. Usually oatmeal chocolate chip, sometimes oatmeal butter pecan, and sometimes peanut butter. Sometimes when the going gets tough, the tough announce they’re baking and then the oven gets less of a workout then expected!
It runs in the family. Even now that we’re “grown-ups” (Ha!), my non-cooking sister will occasionally get me to make her a batch of dough just for munching. In fact I even have a special quicky recipe for a mini batch of chocolate chip dough that’s designed just for eating and not for baking!
Black bean burritos with lime and lots of peppers are pretty darn good too.

My favorite comfort food growing up revolves around Tuesday. Tuesday was bread and cinnamon roll day at our house. My mom somehow found the time with 4 kids and ailing FIL and many time missionary houseguests to bake 4 loves of bread and a jellyroll size pan of cinnamon rolls every Tuesday. No lingered at school or friends houses after school on Tuesdays. It was a race to get home and hopefully get the gooey-ist (sp?) roll in the pan!

It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get to grow up exposed to the culture, but when my mom makes kasha I always feel a little more connected to that part of myself.

I don’t have a knitting BAG problem, I have a knitting BASKET problem. Not just any basket mind you, but handcrafted artisan baskets like Sweetgrass baskets from the Carolina Low Country, or White Oak baskets from the Smokies or Blue Ridge Mountains. Handmade baskets and great yarn area really made for each other! I just bought a new basket and yarn last week while on vacation in WV.
I have many foods that speak comfort to my soul. Homemade mac and cheese, grilled sharp cheddar cheese sandwiches on homemade white bread slathered with real butter; Napoleons filled with the finest pastry cream; a perfectly roasted rare *prime* rib with a jumbo Idaho russet potato that has been slathered in real butter and coarse Kosher salt and oven-baked nice and slow; homemade white bread toasted, then slathered with creamy Jif peanut butter and served open-faced with a drizzle of sourwood honey or homemade strawberry preserves; my mother’s apple or lemon pie; my grandfather’s eclairs; my grandmother’s french bread. Did you capture the key word??? Slathered!!!!

For me, comfort lies in a pot of chicken and dumplings, made with a *real* stewing hen from the farmer’s market, the sort of tough old bird you can’t buy in supermarkets anymore. It takes four hours of simmering for the meat to become tender, and meanwhile the broth is becoming wonderfully rich and thick. The flavor takes me straight back to my childhood . . . because my mother was a penny-pincher and stewing hens were cheap back then!

Chicken Tetrazzini from the Fannie Farmer cookbook is a favorite along with BHG Pork Chop Spanish Rice.
Ok, no more about food. too hungry!.

Hands down – strawberry shortcake. But it has to be the Bisquick shortcake – fresh out of the oven, with the hand-picked berries. So here in NE OH, I only get this a few weeks out of the year. But that means it’s savored even more, it can be made the rest of the year, but the store bought berries, shipped in from CA aren’t ever as good.

3. dessert-y item: i have fallen in love with gifford’s no bake cookie ice cream. it’s basically chocolate ice cream with no-bake chunks all through it. i think gifford’s may be maine only, though. sorry.

Cinnamon toast is probably the top of my comfort food list. Followed closely by grilled cheese sandwiches. My Nan (maternal grandmother) used to make cinnamon toast for me when I got home from school. My Nan is who taught me to knit so they both comfort me. Knitting is probably more expensive but better for the waistline. Maybe I should try 15 minutes of knitting instead of the cinnamon toast next time I’m feeling the need for a comfort food binge.

I know I’m a bit late to post, but just wanted to let you know I made this mac & cheese and it was delicious. I used a “trick” I learned from America’s Test Kitchen on PBS and thought I’d share. When you grate your cheeses, add them to a large, heat-proof bowl. The next part is kind of tricky, so you have to time it pretty carefully, but it usually works out ok for me. When your pasta is finished, drain it and put in in the bowl, on top of the cheese. Then pour your white sauce over the top, cover the bowl, and let it sit for 2 minutes. When the 2 minutes is up, stir it all up and voila – all the cheese is melted and delicious, and you can pour it right into your baking dish. And it’s much easier than having to stir the cheese into the sauce and hope it doesn’t end up lumpy. Anyway, my family LOVED this recipe, and thank you for sharing. I won’t make it often (the cholesterol!), but it’s perfect and delicious once in awhile.
PS. I also love that it’s on the same page as the Namaste bags!
Is there any hope they might be adding bright purple to their color range? Because that would be just fantastic and I’d order another one immediately.
