January Contest!
We have a super easy contest for you this month. See this pretty mannequin? We need a name for her. She’ll be modeling hats, scarves, and cowls here at Loopy Central, but so far a name has eluded us. She looks rather 40′s-ish, doesn’t she? Or maybe not. So the contest for the month – leave a blog comment with your name suggestion OR tell us your grandparents first names in the comments section. We might find a good name from one of your grandparents, too. (And that way, we’ll have a good man-name in case we add a guy mannequin at some point.) We’ll choose the name that we think fits her best! If you suggested it, we’ll be sending you some Wollmeise. (If more than one person suggests the same name, we’ll draw for it.) We’ll also do a random draw from all of the comments, for another winner of Wollmeise, just because we want to. (By the way, I missed Blog De-Lurk day on Monday, so today would be a good day to do your annual de-lurk here on the blog – and get into the contest at the same time!)
Update on things here: We all need a bit of a Wollmeise Breather.
The two Customs-stuck boxes have come in, but the yarn needs to be photoed and put up and I’m heading out to CA on Friday. So – no Wollmeise for awhile. We haven’t decided about next week yet. And speaking of leaving, I’ll be back to the blog on Monday with another Loopy Limelight. (Thanks for all of your fun emails and comments about the Limelights. It is fun for me to share more about these wonderful dyers and knitters with you, and I’m glad you like it, too.) Next Monday’s Limelight features the indie dyer whose sock yarn I’m currently knitting into a sock. Wonderful stuff.
Monday: there’s no mail here in the U.S., so we’ll all off that day. (Me? I’ll be recovering from a very quick weekend in CA. The Elves? Spending time with their kids, who will also be off that day.) All orders from Friday noon, through Monday evening, will begin shipping on Tuesday morning. I hope you all have a nice long weekend, if you’re lucky enough to have Monday off, too!

My paternal Grandmother’s name was Geraldine. She went by Geri. She was a real live flapper in her day-spunky and glamorous and outspoken, and had a delightful sense of humor. She loved to giggle. And LOVED baseball!
Even though I would love for you to name her after my darling Grandma, I think Lupe is sheer genius.

I think Betty, as in Page. My grandparents names were Irene (given name Bertha – story to follow) & James and Margaret & John (Jack).
My dad’s mom was born at home, as was common at the time, and her father was sent to the courthouse to register her birth. He stopped off at the local bar on the way and when he did finally get there he’d forgotten what her name was. Well, Grandma went her whole life as Irene. She didn’t drive and in those days a birth certificate wasn’t necessary to get married as the minister knew who you were. After she retired, she and a friend planned to go on a trip to England. She needed a passport for the first time and went to obtain a copy of her birth certificate. There was no record of an Irene Volker born on or around her birth date. A in depth search revealed that a Bertha Jane Volker had been born to her parents on her birthday. Grandma promptly changed her name.

She looks like a 1920′s flapper. And I figured she would be in her 20s in the 1920s so she would have been born in the early 1900s. And being a google-er (google-ite?, one who googles), I looked up the popular girls names from 1900-1910 based on records from http://www.Social Security.gov. (Trying to be logical) She looks like she’s a flapper but with a distinct level of sophistication so I think she looks like a “Margaret” (3rd most popular name) or a “Helen” (2nd most popular name).
Both my Grandmas were named Frances.

Okay, I have no idea if this has been said or not (I’m SO not going to read through all 367 posts!), but she looks just like an Erte girl. (There should be an accent over the last E, but danged if I know how to type that.) Erte was a very la-de-dah designer in the 20s & 30s, and yes, your girl just screams flapper to me! As a tribute to Erte, I think her name should begin with an E. I just met a lovely lady named Elsa tonight, so that might be nice. My grandmother’s name was Evelyn, but I also think Esme or Etta would fit nicely. Either way, she’s very pretty!

She reminds me of a Pierrot clown, so I think her name should be Claire – because of the song ‘Au clair de la lune’ (which is about moonlight, not about a girl named Claire, I know) which references ‘mon ami Pierrot’ (my friend Pierrot).
Of course, if Claire gets a partner, his name should be Pierrot then.
Or maybe Pierre, to sound less silly.

She’s got a very “Copa Cabana” vibe to her, so I would suggest Lola. For a man’s mannequin, I would go with Rico, just to continue the whole Copa Cabana vibe.
As for my grandparents, Bernice, Samuel Patrick, Anna, and Emilio (but everyone called him Eddie). My great uncles name is Fausto and he was married to Flora – those names might work too!

Lessee… My parents (who were both born in the ’20s so should fit in with your time frame) were named Ethel and Patrick. My grandparents were Maggie and Rudolph, and Bessie and John. And one set of great-grandparents were Sarah and Jack (Grandma Maggie’s parents).

I think she looks 1920′s-ish myself, so I vote for Daisy (from The Great Gatsby) or Zelda (F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife). If you really want to reach, you could go for Myrtle – she was Tom’s mistress from the book.
As for grandparents’ names:
Fred and Vonnie – She was supposed to be Yvonne, but no one in the family at the time knew how to pronounce it – no French speakers. Her sister was Blanche, but everyone called her Blanch-ee.
Mildred, Harry, and Vance – This grandma had two husbands – Harry was my biological grandpa, but my dad never even knew him. Vance, my step-grandpa, was the only one Dad and I knew.

Cora, my grandmother, definitely. My other grandmother was Florence, which I don’t think quite does it here. But you might.

A Lola or a Gwen to me….maybe even a Roxie! I like that name, it kind of evokes a woman with a bit of gumption!
And my Nana’s name is Lola. =D So that works!
Oh and my daughter’s name is Gwen….I thought it was such a classy name you don’t hear too often these days. My Nana told me in the 1930s-40s Gwen became very popular.
I’m lookin’ forward to seeing pics of the new star at the Loopy Ewe. Perhaps a beret would look nice for a first photo?!

She has a definite flapper or French presence to me. While Greta was my first thought and Clara for Clara Bow was a second i think i would submit Anais for Anais Nin, the author due to her French birth, and if you have a male model ever, Henry, for her long time lover, Henry Miller the playwright…as a pair: hot hot hot. : )

On the subject of grandmothers’ names, I’ve got nothing too extraordinary. Mine were Doris and Rose (Rose would have been our child’s name if we had a girl, but we had a boy).
However, my great-grandmother was called Yoghaper. It actually sounds nicer than it looks, but would never sound anything but strange to English speaking ears, I fear.

My Dad’s mother was named Rosalind, and she actually looked somewhat like your mannequin in her younger days. Let me tell you about her.
She was the younger daughter of a man who desperately wanted a son he never had. So, he decided that she would be his son, and he called her “Steve” and raised her as he would have raised a boy. He was a businessman, and in her youth she traveled the length and breadth of the US with him.
She obtained a degree in journalism from Columbia University in the early 1900′s. Women did not do that at the time. She met my grandfather while working as a news reporter for the New York Herald. They were married in December, he died in the spring in a flu epidemic, and she had my father in November. For the rest of her life, she could never talk about him.
She continued to work while raising my father. At one point, she was the national secretary of the WCTU. Which is funny, because she did like to drink. However, she took whatever jobs she could find that made it possible to raise my father.
She taught me to knit. She was the one who made many pairs of hand knit socks for my Dad. I took that over after she died, and I knit him many pairs before he died.
She was a woman who was well ahead of her time. I proudly tell people that I come from a long line of uppity broads, and I can hear her laugh every time I say that.

My grandfathers names were Fred and Tony. Tony came straight through Ellis Island from Italy and couldn’t speak a word of english. His last name was Brundemonte (with the “r” rolled of course). Since he couldn’t write either, they just made his last name “Breadmont”.
I think having mannequins named Tony and Elsie Brundemonte would be just fabulous.

She DOES look a little like Velma Kelly but her name is Viv. Vivian. (life). She was my Grandma’s best friend. She never married; she called herself a “career gal”. She had the most amazing clothes, she got her hair and nails done every single week and she drove the most beautiful turquoise blue T-Bird. The original, real T-bird that could get a speeding ticket while it was still in the garage. If it was new, chic, original and fun, Viv had it. She was fabulous. And now she lives at the Loopy Ewe. The mannequin has the cosmetic look and hair style of 1920s flappers that held over into 1930s Hollywood, like Greta Garbo, Tallulah Bankhead, Theda Bara, Fay Wray, Marlene Dietrich, ZaSu Pitts, Jean Harlow, and Norma Shearer. The long, exaggerated, thinned, and oval arc of the eyebrow with heavy dark kohl eye makeup and false eyelashes was a distinctive part of the flapper look, right down to the beauty mark and pointy Betty Boop lips. The slick “bobbed” hair cut was a signature look, usually fingerwaved and often with the side curl that hugged the face pulled out in front of the ears. (Remember Victorian women during the early 1900s – 1919 had miles long hair – the Gish sisters, Marion Davies, and Mary Pickford, and when Mary Pickford cut her below the waist-length tresses, it was worthy of international news and a significant amount of broohaha, and the fight for women’s enfranchisement escalated during the 20s when flappers cut their hair, threw off their corsets, raised their hemlines, and wore bloomers.)
The ultimate and original flapper was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda, so I agree with the others that she should be Zelda, in honor of a spirited, adventurous knitter/writer/feminist whose life was tragically cut short, but ZaSu would be equally good.
See Zelda here:

so i’m visiting the blog just in time for a fun contest… where did you find her??? of course i have an opinion about this.
she makes me think of an audrey hepburn character but not the actress herself. so i vote Sabrina or Natasha. Holly or Eliza would work too.
she also made me think of F. Scott Fitz like everyone else here, so i’m adding Gloria, Isabelle, and Cecelia, who were characters of his.
i ACTUALLY stopped by because i’m going to Ireland (through MTW) (yes, I really am, after talking to you and susan so much about travel) and i want to send yall a link to my blog for it. so if you can email me back and give me your email, i’ll send it your way.
ALSO– the yarn you gave me finally would its way into a very pretty scarf that i plan on taking overseas.
have a good holiday!

now she has to be the cutest mannequin I ever did see! She looks like a Susie-Q! My Dad says she looks like Cleopatra.
My Grandmother’s name on my mum’s side was Mabel Beth (it was supposed to be pronounced May-bell,) She went by Beth and we called her Grammie Beth and my Grandfather was Arthur James. My Mum’s step father’s name was Lynn. Now my Grandpa on my Dad’s side was Paul and my Grandmother was named Elizabeth too. But she changed her name to Mary (her middle name) when she married my Grandfather because her mother in law was also named Elizabeth. When she was little my Grandmother’s sister would caller her lil-bit. One of the neatest family names that we have is Zedack (some great, great, great etc. Uncle). I tried really hard to convince Mike it would be a grand baby name, but no go!
My oldest daughter’s name is Corra, named after the woman in the Last of the Mohicans. We found out after we bought our house that the woman who lived here the longest was named Coral, but was called Cora or Code.

My Mum’s mum was swedish and called Siri, (tall, grey hair always swept up in a bun, fur coats and silk dresses. She spoke 6 or 7 languages and was a stickler for manners. However, she held no truck with the domestic arts- and neither cooked, nor sewed let alone knit!! My grandfather was Arthur and scots! I would call her Ewenice.
If she ends up having a male companion, I would call him Ramsey.
But then, I have a little “thing” for sheep and goats. Kathy

Unfortunately, I also immediately thought “Lola” when I saw her… so, no original name suggestion here.

I looked to see if your beauty has a name and didn’t see the post.
I’d like to come up with something original like Purl/Pearl or Kashmir that ties to knitting/fiber but can’t come up with anything other than those two that tie into the theme.
My other suggestions are Chica and Rowena.
Do we get to post again if we think of more?

My grandparents names are not unique, but they re enduring. Emma Pearl and Agnes (born in the twenties). My name (Constance Charlotte) named after the 1940′s movie star – Constance Bennett. Charlotte, named after my mother’s maid of honor. She looks a little like “Betty Boop”, but is more sophisticated. I love the fashions of the 40′s. Lovely! Maxene is nice.
So many great names to choose from. The other participants came up with great names. How does one deside?
