From Then to Now, New Specials, and a CONTEST!
In honor of our Third Anniversary Month, I’m doing a special contest blog on three different Mondays in August. Today’s blog starts with a mini photo history of Loopy Central.
We started in a little corner of the basement and this was just going to be a little thing I did “on the side”. It was going to be “on the side” because I already had a fun scrapbooking business that I had been doing for 14 years. After Loopy took off, I retired from the scrapbooking business to put all of my time and effort here, instead. (This is one of the first Knitting Groups to come shop in person! Honestly, our space was not a whole lot bigger than what you see in the photo. I had to move out of the little corner so that they’d have room to move around a wee bit and shop.)
We packed boxes and left them on the porch and in our front hallway for the mailman.
Soon we had to expand the shelves into the rest of our basement, to fit more yarn and accessories in.
Then we gave up and moved it out of the house and into our own space.
After a year in the new space, we added the space next to ours so that we could double the size again.
Since we still have plenty of room to add more shelves in our current space, I’m hoping we won’t have to expand any more! (And I have no desire to get to the “warehouse” size. I want to work in a colorful, fun, inspiring-looking shop. I love walking into Loopy Central every morning. It’s bright and cheerful and happy here!)
Today’s blog contest question: How did you first find out about The Loopy Ewe? Leave your answer in the blog comments, and we’ll draw for winners next week. (And it’s ok to say “I don’t remember” if you don’t remember.) We send out one prize package for every 250 comments and last week we gave out 5 of them. (What’s in there? We sent 3 skeins of yarn and 3 accessories in each package, because we’re kind of into 3’s this month.) We’re ready to send out more, so leave your comments and we’ll use the random number generator to draw new names sometime next week.
This week’s Anniversary Special: we have all Cherry Tree Hill yarn, all Heartstrings patterns, and all GoKnit accessories for 20% off. Enjoy this special until midnight Friday. The final Anniversary Week Specials (and our last Anniversary Contest) will be announced in the blog next week.
Also – we just added new things to the website! Under What’s New, you’ll find: Numma Numma Toasty and The Usual, String Theory, Prism Merino Mia, Schoppel Wolle Zauberball (including the new Crazy colors), Yarn Pirate, Intentions Yarn by Miss Violet, Hand Maiden Swiss Mountain Super Sock (brand new!), Perchance to Knit/Spin Roving, 3 AM Emily Bags, Loopy’s Carabiner Tape Measure, Loopy’s Red Sticky Book, and a Lorna’s Laces re-stock, including the Sock Summit colorways (Hydra Pool Party, Lorna’s Lazers, Frankenstein’s Cotillion, Hobgoblin Hoedown, Ghoul’s Gala, Nightmare’s Night Out, and Medusa’s Masquerade.) Next week we’ll also have Whidbey Island, which is the special colorway they did for us to have exclusively at the Summit. Zombie BBQ sold out at the Summit, but we’ll get more for you. Also next week, the special colors that Dream in Color flash-dyed for us to have at the Sock Summit, and several other fun things as well.

I found TLE when I stumbled on your blog (maybe through Knitters’ Review?); you were writing about your grandparents’ old home and how you saved the doors…love of sentimental things and yarn, what an unbeatable combination!
I’m sooo excited you’ll have a Whidbey Island colorway…I lived there 5 happy years when the kids were little!

I found The Loopy Ewe through my favorite book site, LibraryThing.com. I asked people in the knitting group there where they got their yarn as my town is sadly lacking in sock yarn availability. I visited dozens of sites on everyone’s recommendations and decided this was my favorite. The Loopy Ewe rocks!

I actually found Loopy Ewe through Wendy from plurk. She kept doing these socks and projects with yarn she said she had purchased from the Loopy Ewe, so I /had/ to check it out. I spend many hours a week looking at all of the goodies, mentally shopping for the next time I have a little bit of money available for spending.

Oh, my! I don’t remember at all! It might have been through a blog I was reading at the time. Or maybe you had an ad some place? Either way, as long as I have been seriously knitting socks, I’ve been buying yarn from The Loopy Ewe. Hmm…I just searched my blog and my first entry mentioning The Loopy Ewe was on April 19, 2007.
Happy Anniversary once again, Sheri! I’m so thrilled that you’ve been around for 3 years!

I found The Loopy Ewe on Ravelry – specifically on the Wollmeise Anonymous boards.
Everybody was raving about the selection and service, and I thought, well, I’ll give them a try, who knows. I lucked on to a WM update, and just watched in fascination as the skeins disappeared from the screen in five minutes – BINK! BINK! BINK! (None of the colors I wanted were in the update, and I didn’t want to get something just for the sake of getting one.)
Ah, but then I started looking around the site and discovered Dream In Color Smooshy…and Starry….and Casbah….and all the wonderful laceweights……
You had me hooked from the very first order! Even DH gets excited when I get a TLE package in the mail – and he’s not after the Loopy kisses. He’s a computer programmer, and he thinks your website is so well-designed, he will often say, “You should order ALL your yarn from TLE – they know what they’re doing.”

Yup Cindy told me about this “little yarn shop” that her sister-in-law was running out of the basement and well the rest is history. I found you guys two ways more or less at once: on a recommendation from a fellow knitter who works at the locally-owned bookstore, when I told her I’d been on a sock knitting jag since New Year’s; and in a LiveJournal post from a fellow sci-fi geek on my friends list, who announced her plans to make Battlestar Galactica Viper Socks and linked to a pattern and purple Dream In Color Smooshy here she’d picked for it.
Usually when I bump into a reference like that more than once, I figure the universe really, really means for me to get with the program.

That show got me going on sock knitting and if you look at my account Ive racked up quite a few sock yarns in the last couple of years. I’m on my 32nd pair this year and I’m in your sock club and LOVE it.
Thanks for the anniversary sale – my sock stash is unbelievable – but I’m addicted.

I first heard about The Loopy on Ravelry when I was new there and searching for sock yarn that was as good as it’s hype. I admit it took me a minute to get up the courage to order, I was not sure from the name if it was a “serious” business. What’s in a name? Well, I found one of the most serious businesses catering to sock knitters out there. What a joy to find!

How did you first find out about The Loopy Ewe? I first found out through the Lime & Violet podcast!
Nicole said,

I am originally from St.Louis and my family still lives there. Right before my last visit to St.Louis, I looked up all of the yarn stores in St.Louis. I had, conveniently, just gotten into knitting socks, and there are absolutely NO good sock yarn stores here in the DC area. So I planned my visit to Loopy Ewe. I insisted that my mom and brother drive my brother and I to Loopy Ewe directly from the airport and wait in the parking lot for a half hour until you guys opened. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on a huge amount of yarn, to the point that my husband had to take some of his stuff out of our checked baggage to prevent an overweight charge on our baggage on our way back home. But it was worth it, because it’s Loopy Ewe yarn! Loopy Ewe is still my primary source for sock yarn because of the prices, variety, and service.

Go figure.

It was gently explained to me that TLE is The Loopy Ewe, that STR is Socks That Rcok, and CTH is Cherry Tree Hill…and so I was introduced to the arcane world of the sock knitters!

I have to thank the Lime and Violet podcast for enlightening me about TLE. Anywhere people want to go and camp out on someone’s lawn (this was back when the shop was in your basement), must be good.
Lots of folks must be shopping right now as the site is timing out. Hope you will get more of those blue sticky notebooks so I can come back and get one later.

I think that I must have found TLE through Ravelry, because the first time I remember shopping the site was when I won a $40 gift certificate through one of my groups. As I recall, it was from the moderator of “Ontario Knitters Unite!” and the contest challenge was to photograph ourselves knitting in our favorite outdoor knitting spot (in the winter, no less!) and I decided to climb into the hot tub in freezing cold weather with a sock for company.

I found out about the Loopy Ewe from Ravelry–I think. Either that or on the Yarn Harlot’s blog. Either way, I enjoy looking at the site but have yet to convince myself to order something. (I’m working on it, but it’s summer and having yarn delivered to my parents’ house makes my family look at me like I’m nuts, so usually I wait until I can get the yarn at school. People there still look at me like I’m nuts but they’re polite enough not to mention it.)

I first heard about the Loopy Ewe from the Socknitters List. Always on the lookout for a new place to shop, I checked it out immediately
Since then, I’ve always been delighted with the products, quick service, and friendly service when I’ve had a question. It is great to be able to check out so many brands of sock yarn in one place. And, your notions are wonderful! I particularly love my little “book” of post it notes. I’m a big believer in supporting my local shops, but when I can’t get it here in the Lansing area I head straight for TLE.

I truly don’t remember. When I looked back to see when my first order was placed with you, it was in March, 2007, and very few months have passed without an order to you guys (and most months more than one). I had just started knitting socks, and I guess I was just searching the web for sock yarn and found you. I recomment TLE to anyone who asks where I get all of my beautiful sock yarn.

Whenever I send in a comment I sound more nuts than not and this will be no exception. I read a mystery novel that had knitters and they talked about a fancy silk yarn by a company called hand maiden. The book came with a pattern for a scarf in that yarn and I started looking for the yarn…… this led me to the Loopy Ewe whatever that was. I don’t shop online because that would just be toooo dangerous and I like being a brick and morter girl. Well that rule was made to be broken and yall had hand maiden yarn. and a few more lusious choices….. still haven’t made the scarf in the book but I have made a couple of other hand maiden beauties…… love this store and glad I read the book

It took me a bit to remember how I found TLE, but I guess all I really had to do was look at my first order. I was working on a Jester costume for the renaissance faire and decided I wanted to knit stockings for it. I had never knit socks before so I went with the pattern suitable for a first pair. Cookie A’s German Stockings. And to add just a bit more to the craziness, I made them tall enough to go over my knee.
I don’t remember how I found the German Stocking pattern, but somehow I came across it for sale at TLE as well as the yarn for it. So I ordered my yarn and pattern and got knitting. And just because knitting cabled, over the knee stockings wasn’t challenging enough for a first pair of socks, I knit them on size 0 needles.

I found the Loopy Ewe after reading a post on Ravelry about best sock club swag. The poster received a tiny little crochet hook on a key ring as part of her TLE club shipment and was thrilled with it. Don’t remember the exact pathway, but I know it started with a hard copy issue of VogueKnitting a couple of years ago. To my surprise, the magazine contained numerous advertisements with .com addresses. I started looking up websites that were appealing and found that each website contained another dozen website links. I eventually found my way to the Loopy Ewe! Tagged the Loopy Ewe as one of my favorites and have been checking in whenever I need a little knitting inspiration!

I found TLE through a friend who introduced me to sock knitting a couple of years ago and I have been addicted ever since. I only wish I had more money to spend on yarn. I don’t really have a “stash”. I typically have to just buy what I need for a particular project or gift right now. I hope to have a “stash” in the future. Congrats on 3 years and hope there are many more. St. Louis is my birth city even though I haven’t lived there for a very long time. I hope to visit there one day in the near future and will definitely make it appoint to see the shop in person. Thanks for everything.

Wow… *thinks* Huh. I heard of TLE before there was such a thing as Ravelry– one of my co-workers, during the course of our becoming friends, turned me on to these things called “knit blogs”, and these even weirder things called “podcasts” (that, of course, had to do with knitting) and the possibility, of all things, of online shopping for sock yarn, our mutual obsession. And through her I found Lime & Violet, and there was mutual raving from both friend and show about The Loopy Ewe… so I had to give you a try!
So, so glad I did. Thank you, and the Elves, for all you do! Happy Anniversary!

I can remember seeing The Loopy Ewe’s ads all over the place – it seemed like everywhere I went there you were in Ravelry or magazines and on Knitty. Of course, I could have swiss cheese for a memory. But when I finally came to the website, I remember being totally head-over for how easy the site was to navigate and find exactly what I wanted. There were and are so many places to get sock yarn, but The Loopy Ewe has that special alchemy of fantastic tried-and-true as well as up-and-coming yarns, great people behind working behind the scenes, and a good looking but common-sense internet presence.
Okay, so I’m a bit of a fan.

I’m glad I’m allowed to write that I don’t remember because….I don’t. I could have done an internet search to find sock yarn, or read its praises on Knitter’s Review. It was before Ravelry was fully launched so I know it wasn’t there. TLE was still in the small area at home, before it moved to either the basement or its new lovely larger location. Wherever, it’s well-deserved success. Congratulations.

I first heard about The Loopy Ewe from a good friend of mine who lives in the St. Louis area. She is into all things yarn and yarn shops and sent me the link. I think it was probably about the time you first opened…I know I ordere done little skein of yarn then but didn’t really get into much of the sock knitting/stash building until about a year later. I enjoy the virtual browsing and one day I hope to make it to Loopy Central for a visit.

When I read that question I though “Haven´t I always know about The Loopy Ewe”? But I think I had some kind of life before that, maybe? It´s hard to remember. But I think I either read about the store on a blog or even first heard of it on Ravelry. Loopy Ewe is still my first yarn-shoppingchoice since I know I will get great yarn and great service. Happy-yarnaversary!

I first learned about The Loopy Ewe from Wendy Knits (as so many others have!). I was an aspiring sock knitter, but not quite ready to take the plunge into the expensive yarns yet. I found that The Loopy Ewe had affordable lines and really seemed to love their customers!
I’ve now been ordering for about 2 years now, but have taking a couple of knitting hiatuses due to busy life or not being motivated. But as soon as I nestle back into knitting, I find myself at The Loopy Ewe stocking up on all of the beautiful yarn. Plus, customer service canNOT be beat. I always know that when I have a silly question, I will be greeted with warmth and understanding from Sheri and her wonderful staff.
Thank you for all that you do!!

I wanted one but when I got to your web site, found out they were out of stock. It was so disappointing. I kept checking back to see when they would be for sale again. I finally was able to order, so I ordered several–one for me and some for my knitting friends. It made a darling stocking stuffer. I keep coming back to the site because there are such interesting things–yarn, tools, bags, etc. I am a sock knitter and I love the sock yarn at Loopy Ewe.

Hmmm, how I first heard about Loopy Ewe? It happened in one of two ways and I cannot remember which incident happened first:
My husband was deployed and I was looking for a yarn swap to join on-line. I had been reading the comments of one that had already been filled and “Loopy Ewe” was mentioned. I Googled and there you were! And the other way (like I said, I cannot remember which was first)…
A person I was already swapping with mentioned you and mentioned that there were frequent buyer benefits and I thought: “I should check this out, since I have been stockpiling sock yarn in anticipation of knitting my first sock…”
They both happened around the same time and I am glad since I have discovered that customer service is still alive and well through you and the elves. That and my eyes were opened to sock yarn I had no clue existed.

I found The Loopy Ewe through Ravelry. I wanted to make a pair of socks, and I could not find the color combinations that I wanted at other stores, and a fellow sock addict recommended TLE. Since then the majority of my purchases have been from TLE. There is such an awesome selection, and if I am looking for a specific color or fiber, I ALWAYS find what I am looking for. More recently, the sneak-ups have increased my “impulse buys”, and I am trying new yarns that I might not have had the chance to get otherwise. The customer service and “goodies” are a fabulous touch, too! Thanks Sherri and the Elves for enriching my knitting life!!

Sheri, thanks for another contest! You’re the best!!!
I’m not sure, but it might have been through Wendyknits. In any case, it was MY lucky day, as the reference was to a contest, and I WON!!!
My first experience with The Loopy Ewe was winning a random contest, and what a prize I received! Yarn, pattern, extras, all packed with loving care, and sent to a stranger with whom you’d not done business! What a faith in people you have!
Love you always,
Jan

I believe I heard about TLE before Ravelry existed.. I was in search of a certain sock yarn and when I searched through google, you came up as one of the online yarn shops! The rest was history:) I stick with TLE since I have Frequent Shopper Benes, and I know other shops have them too, but I have already spent SO much with you, I might as well stick around…it always seems that right when I need something- you get it in! I have also found some amazing small vendors on Etsy, and it seems within a few months of me buying their yarn from Etsy, Sheri has them signed up to be at TLE: i.e. Enchanted Knoll, Perchance to Knit, & Sanguine Gryphon to name a few! I am so happy I can find these yarns/rovings in a shop now!
Here’s to you, Loopy Ewe!

I placed my first order with the Loopy Ewe in October 2006. I was just starting my sock yarn stash and really wanted some Sweet Georgia speed demon yarn. You had it! I still have some of both skeins that I got in my first order plus the little socks I made for my daughter. I still look at the yarn and think how much I love it. I know you probably hear this all the time but The Loopy Ewe is still my favorite place to buy sock yarn (or yarn in general) from even after almost 3 years!

Wendy Knits … then I saw your photos of the yarn and I was smitten! You have the best and most beautiful photos of yarn. Your web site is excellent. I also am very fond of your pictures of the yarn linked to projects. I love that, and I also love Ravelry, but you were my first find with that feature. Great job Web Guy!
