First Quarter Challenge/KAL and a CONTEST!
I can’t make up my mind. I have had this KAL Challenge planned out since last fall, and I still haven’t come to a decision on my pattern. I have scoured Ravelry. I have gone through pattern books. I have asked for favorites on The Loopy Ewe group on Facebook. And still … I’m undecided. Our First Quarter KAL Challenge is to knit a sweater. We haven’t had a sweater challenge since we did the Dream in Color Classy one about two years ago. It’s time, again! I have had my yarn picked out for a month. I’m using String Theory DK in Black Cherry. I do love Lisa’s Central Park Hoodie and Melanie’s Chinese Lace Pullover. Both of those caught my eye way back then, and the photos still make me want to knit them. Of course I have queued quite a few more in the meantime. I think the thing with sweaters is that in my mind, they are a much bigger time commitment than a pair of socks. I never stress over sock patterns, because I’ll finish one and start in on another. For some reason, committing to a sweater pattern makes me feel like I can only pick one a year and it makes me indecisive. FPS. For the DC challenge, I knit up a Mr. Greenjeans and I love that sweater. It was very do-able for an inexperienced sweater knitter. So – pick a sweater pattern and come knit with us! Since this is a bit of a longer knit, we’ll leave this open until May 1st. (We will, however, have a new challenge go up in April to coincide with the beginning of the Second Quarter. They’ll just have to overlap a bit.)
We need you to vote on all of the entries from our Fourth Quarter ’09 Challenge, where I asked you to knit a shawl. There are over 100 photos in that gallery for you to look through – wow. You all did such beautiful work. Please take a look at the photos and email to tell us your vote for the “Reader’s Choice” award. We give a Loopy gift certificate to the winner of that, and we also do a random drawing among all entries for a second gift certificate. We’ll take your votes (support AT theloopyewe DOT com) through next Monday and then will announce the winners.
Back to the new challenge – in order to participate, pick any sweater pattern (or vest, or tunic) that you’d like to make. The yarn needs to be a line that we carry here at The Loopy Ewe (although if you actually bought that yarn elsewhere, that’s ok. I know many of you have stashes to work from.) If you do need to purchase yarn for this KAL, we are offering you a 20% discount on the yarn for one sweater project. Just leave us an order note that you’re participating in the KAL Challenge and tell us which yarn in that order you’ll be using for it, and we’ll adjust the price on your invoice. (Note – if you are going for the $75 free shipping level, make sure that this discount won’t put you below $75.) This offer is good on an order placed between 1/18 – 1/31, for those of you who want to participate in the KAL. Don’t forget to leave an order note for us.
Just in time for sweater knitting, we put up a full re-stock on Dream in Color Classy. We also have Malabrigo Worsted, Noro Silk Garden Worsted, Cascade 220, Fiesta Boomerang, Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted, and Madelinetosh Worsted in stock. (We do have more Madelinetosh Worsted shipping out to us next week, but I’m not sure it will be here in time for the discount. No promises, but we’ll do our best. In the meantime, we also have a new Tosh Sock order enroute to us already, and the new Pashmina base coming after that. Fun things to look forward to.) And of course there are lots and lots of DK and fingering weight options for your sweaters as well. There are some really fun sweater patterns in those weights.
In addition to the DC Classy re-stock today, we also added in a re-stock of Dream in Color Smooshy, Lane Borgosesia Cashwool, new Trekking colors (#417-421), a luscious new merino/alpaca/nylon sock yarn from Berroco, new Berroco Sox colors, Lorna’s Laces Pearl, Alpaca With a Twist Fino, and more Atenti bags. (And might I point out, those Atenti bags are perfect for carting around sweater projects. Ask me how I know. Isn’t it helpful that I sprinkled a few photos of them in this blog post?) Also coming soon – our 2010 Valentine Kits – watch for them in a couple of weeks!
Knitting Daughter went back to college today, so the holiday season is officially over. (I like that it lasted a long time.) Zoe came to Loopy with me this afternoon, but she’s not very helpful. She likes to be in front of the computer screen while I’m trying to work. Or maybe she just misses these two kids like I do.
Our January Blog Contest question: Do you have a favorite sweater/vest/tunic pattern? Or are you not a sweater knitter? I’ll use the random number generator to draw a winner from your comments, and I have Wollmeise to give away for the prizes! We’ll announce the winners next Monday.
Sheri sorryforthelonglongblogposttoday.Toomuchtotell!

I’m not sure I’ve knit enough sweaters to have a favorite per se, but I’m knitting a Gooseberry Cardigan and Audrey In Unst Cardigan. I’m almost done with both and it’s pretty exciting! I highly recommend the Gooseberry Cardigan in tosh worsted. It worked up perfectly at gauge for me and it’s absolutely gorgeous!

I really love the sweater patterns in the original Yarn Girls book. The patterns are very versatile and knit up easily and well. I’ve used several different yarns and keep getting great results.

I like the February Lady Sweater. I started it with some DIC, knit about two inches and put it down again. Now that February is coming around, maybe I’ll try and finish it up for the Ravelympics challenge.

I’m not a sweater knitter, but I am going to try knitting Tang and Saddle-A-Line from Custom Knits. Unfortunately, I can’t wear all these lovely yarns next to my skin. I can wear merino socks on my feet, but then I have to go for cotton on sweaters or I would itch too much. Can’t wear alpaca or mohair or anything else animal fiber either. So I think I have to play in the challenge in spirit only.

I am a sweater knitter – I just don’t make sweaters that fit well! My new favorite pattern is Pickadilly. I love that it is a DK weight sweater knit at a tight gauge (I get into trouble because I like a tighter gauge than a lot of patterns call for) with the ability to make it slightly funky (the off center closure) or more traditional (pattern has mods for center closure) AND it has the cutest trim (directions for knitted on or crocheted on in pattern) AND it is in a very broad range of sizes.

I’ve only knit one sweater and while it wasn’t a bad experience I don’t think it will be a favorite. I’ve decided to make a Central Park Hoodie for my next sweater. I have a really cold classroom and need all of the sweaters I can get. I won’t be finished by May 1 by any means so I won’t enter the challenge.

Thank you, Sheri, for the discount! I am keeping my fingers crossed that Madelinetosh worsted will come back in stock in time. I still need to complete a sweater, but I have started a couple. I have some favorite patterns though, including Ingenue, Simple fitted Bodice, and Sahara. In fingering weight, I like Honeybee cardi, Myrtle, and the simple and effective pullover.

I’m so not a sweater knitter, since I’m always warm. Also I’m on the fluffy side of the size chart, so buying a million balls of anything doesn’t appeal to the pocketbook. I’ll have to ponder. After all, you didn’t say who I had to knit a sweater for!!
Susan B said,

I’ve only knit sweaters for tiny people (otherwise known as infants). And those were super-simple construction sweaters.
Sweaters for normal-sized people (or larger-than-normal-sized people like me) intimidate me on a few fronts:
1. price – upwards of a dozen skeins of anything is pricey on my limited budget
2. scale – that’s a LOT of knitting
3. finishing – I am the world’s worst seamer
4. customizing – I get the concept conceptually but I am terrified I’ll measure something wrong or count wrong and end up with a sweater that just doesn’t fit or doesn’t look right on and after putting in all that work, that would devastate me.
So mostly I stick to socks, hats, scarves, purses, etc… and the occasional wee sweater for a babe.

I have so many different sweater patterns that I want to knit. The top ones on my list right now are Wisteria and Low Tide Ripples which are both from Twist Collective and Cassidy from Chic Knits. But first I need to finish hubby Iain cabled hoodie first.
I may join in on the challenge this time though I’ll be knitting from my stash since we’re getting ready to move to Germany and I need to downsize the stash.

My favorite handknit sweaters are plain or cabled cardigans that I can just throw on and wear, for warmth. One that I wear all the time is Nancy Bush’s Traveler’s Cardigan, from KNITTER’S Magazine 14. It’s done in worsted. One that is in progress is Veronik Avery’s Woolen Cashmere Twinset Cardigan, from her KNITTING CLASSIC STYLE book, but it’s not a practical choice for the KAL because it’s covered with cables and done entirely in fingering yarn.

I don’t knit a lot of sweaters, and I’m not good at finishing sweaters for myself! I knit my husband a pullover last year and was very proud of myself for getting it done. It’s the sewing up of seams that stops me every time. That’s why I am looking at sweaters that are knit in innovative ways to minimize the amount of sewing up that must be done. “Trina” by Fleece Artist is one that I think is nice, and if I can find a yarn I like for it, I’ll join the KAL.

I never do this, but I am going to do a totally shameless self promotion! I just released this cardigan pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/simple-cardigan-3. It would be so great in all of the hand dyed worsted weight yarns that The Loopy Ewe carries. And, Sheri, yes. This is a new addition to the Nutty Creations pattern line that I can send you.

I just started on the Manchester Jacket last month. Maybe I’ll do the Ropes and Picots Cardigan for the KAL… but I do have a hankering for some Dream in Color so maybe I’ll find a different pattern….

I haven’t knit very many sweaters, although I have many queued and I buy yarn for sweaters all the time. I love the Central Park Hoodies because there are so many variations on it and they all come out looking great. I made a Wisteria sweater last year and that one is a good one, too.

I absolutely love the idea of knitting a sweater but alas, I have not yet. It is purely cost inhibition. I know I can knit socks for around $20 and I have a hard time sacrificing 2-5 pairs of socks (dollar-wise) in favor of buying sweater yarn. When I do at last knit a sweater (and this KAL is sorely tempting), it will likely be the Central Park Hoodie pattern on Ravelry.

The first DIC KAL sweater got me knitting sweaters, and I am hooked. So far, the one I’ve knitted that I everyone else likes best was Hamefarin from J&S using Cascade 220. It turned out really nice, looks like it was really hard to knit (it wasn’t) and the wool is very pretty.
My favorite sweater though: Refined Raglan from IK. Easy, cute, fits well and looks really nice.

I have LOTS of sweater patterns….I look at them. That’s it. I did knit a hooded cardigan, Cassidy, and it is in a bag – waiting – because I don’t know how to seam a sweater. I tried and it was awful, so I carefully ripped it out. I took a class – the lady teaching it waa scary…very stern and sarcastic. She spent most of the time on steam blocking. I sure know how to do that! If I could learn how to seam a sweater, I am sure I would knit them. I am going to attempt a top down knit in the round sweater next.

I don’t yet for sure if I’m going to join the KAL, since I have a significant sweater FAIL (I tend not to get much done on projects I can’t take along with me, since I spend little time at home knitting). But if I do, the pattern I’ve been yearning to knit since I saw it is “Margaret”, by Mary Neal Neador, from Mason-Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines. I have several sweater patterns (and yarn) in my future and have begun two of them. One is a very old pattern (1980s!) from Vogue Magazine – a sweater with a large cat face on the front. The other is a man’s sweater from Berocco which I have adapted to knit in the round (thank you Jared Flood and your 2-part Vogue Knitting article). This fall I finished a cable knit sweater for my husband – one large cable right up the center of the sweater. It fits so nicely. I fell in love with The Slouchy Cardigan from Greetings From Knit Cafe. This was my very first sweater. My friend measured me and I knit a gauge swatch, plugged in the numbers and off I went. Two years later, I pulled it out again and had to reknit the sleeves and one front. When I was finally done, my friend, Anne took it from me and seamed it, stating “I don’t want you to hate knitting sweaters.” I have been advised to only attempt seamless top down sweaters from now on. But between you and me I don’t think that I will even knit one of those.

I have yet to finish knitting a sweater, though I’ve had two on the needles for, like, ever… Love the yarns, love the patterns (a Mr. Greenjeans modified into a pullover in O-Wool Classic, and a Jane Crossover Sweater in Handmaiden’s Ottawa). Both have the potential to become favorite sweaters – I simply have to get over my fear of them not coming out quite right, and finish them already!

Soooo, I’ve actually completed 2 sweaters, but I have a cardigan and a pullover both languishing because I get partway into the second sleeve and lose ALL momentum. I am thinking about ripping out both sleeves of the pullover and making it into a vest, mostly because I won’t have enough yarn to finish the sleeves and I bought the yarn so long ago, there is no way I can match dye lots. I would like to try the February lady sweater and Central Park Hoodie. I have both patterns, I just need to stash-dive and talk myself into beginning. Socks and cowls and hats and mittens are just so quick and gratifying. Yes, instant gratification is not fast enough for me, in case you were wondering. That is why I am horrible about swatching, i just want to go,go,go. Miraculously, I have not had any horrible, life-changing issues with things turning out way too big or way too small. (other than my very first pair of socks, that I CAN get on my feet if I spend 10 minutes swearing and twisting and pulling.) Does anyone’s first pair of socks really fit when they are a novice knitter that has only done mohair garter stitch scarves?

I have a favorite baby sweater which is by Plymouth, it’s knit top down. My favorite adult sweaters seem to mostly be by Knititng Pure and Simple, top down, easy for me to follow. I have made more than one of their patterns.
Though my queue on Ravelry is filled with many different sweaters. Just need more time to knit them up.

Would you believe I never totally finished my Hourglass DIC sweater from 2 years ago? It’s totally my own fault (well who else would be to blame:-)? I didn’t like the finished neckline. I finally took out the neckline this Fall & decided to add a turtleneck. Someday I will!
I would say my fav sweaters have no seaming. I don’t like to seam & thus seaming projects sit in a pile. I knit almost all of a Chic Knits ribbi cardi three years ago & it still sits in pieces.
With all of this said, you would think I’d have no interest in joining the sweater KAL, but indeed I do. I wear sweaters all winter & the few that I’ve knit that are seamless I wear often. I have a few seamless sweaters in my Rav que including Mr. Greenjeans, Garter Yoke Cardigan,

I am declaring this officially the Year of the Sweater as so many people are discussing and knitting sweaters. I have “knit a sweater with sleeves” as one of my personal knitting mandates for 2010. I haven’t knit a full-sized garment in a few years, I’ve been so focused on small items. My first sweater this year is the February Fitted Pullover^ in DIC Classy. The pattern will be perfect for my sweater needs: fitted, scoop neck, three-quarter sleeves and lace. It will also be my first sweater in a hand-dyed yarn.

I’ve made all of one sweater–Accordian, for my preschooler. I’ve finally sewn the last seam, and have to weave in the ends and add the zipper. It’s only taken me a year. *laughing*
Good thing I made it a bit large, thinking it would take me a while! It fits him, almost exactly. I need to finish it quick so he can wear it before he grows again.

The sweater pattern I knit the most is a neck down, seamless style from Paton’s. I’ve knit a sweater for my nephew every year since he was a baby–he’s 12 now, so I’ve knit from baby size to adult small (this year) for his Christmas sweater. I’ve also knit him the Wallaby, which is also a fun pattern (again, no seams–I detest sewing sweaters together) in both a hooded and hoodless variety.

I have knit many sweaters for my kids over the years but my favorite sweater so far is the Hey Teach I made for myself. It is the only sweater I have ever made for myself and it took a lot of time and yarn as I am plus size. We did it as a KAL at knit night and we all love it! I am looking forward to making many more sweaters in the future even if it does take me longer and more yarn. LOL

I have started two top-down sweaters for my granddaughter, but never finish them. I just can’t seem to commit to such a big project. Pitiful, I know. I also don’t think I would like to knit a pattern that has pieces that you have to sew together. I guess I’m a lazy knitter.

My favorite sweater I have knit for myself was a modified CPH made with Cascade Ecological Wool. I modified the construction to a seamless EZ saddle shoulder in order to allow the sleeve cables to continue up to the neck. Then instead of a hood, I raised the back of the neck up a bit with short rows, and picked up all along both sides and made a 2×2 ribbed shawl collar. It is so cozy and warm, and it only took me about 2 1/2 weeks from start to finish. I have been thinking about making a vest for myself for some time now. One of my New Years knitting goals was to try a fair isle piece or steeking. I havent done either one.

I’ve only ever knit one sweater – the February Lady. It came out really large and I don’t wear it. But the real reason I haven’t knit another sweater is . . . the stitching it together part! I’ve never sewn together knitted parts and I am unreasonably afraid of it! (The Feb. Lady has no sewing except for grafting the underarms which is just like sock knitting!)
But I really really want to own a Mr. Greenjeans sweater – - I saw a version on Ravelry with long sleeves which is a great modification.

I loved knitting Rogue, and have a few (hundred) others in my queue, but haven’t knit very many to date. I might just take a look at my queue and see which one(s) are begging to be knit, and finish filling up my shopping cart – I gotta spend the Christmas gift card (and then some!) somehow!

I learned to knit under a year ago. I have made 1 sleeveless sweater ala Zimmerman. Cast on circulars, go around and around to armpit. Leave openings for arms, knit up flat front and back. Leave most of back live, leave most of front live, cast off at front and back neck. 3 needle bind off at shoulders. Crochet tidy edge on neck and armholes. Done with a spectacular yarn (I used Noro), it makes people come up to me and ask where I got it.
I also did a flat sleeveless sweater out of junk yarn when I first learned how to knit. Made flat pieces and 3 needle bind-off at shoulders and sides. All that work and then it shredded at the first hand-wash. Moral of story-good yarn is worth it.
I am totally up for this. Dream in Color Classy (I am making socks in this right now and love it!!!)

I don’t make sweaters often enough to have a favorite but I have enjoyed making Ysolda’s Vine Yoke cardigan, Anne Hanson’s Ondule (although I haven’t steam blocked it or seamed it yet) and I’m enjoying knitting Kate Gilbert’s Kirigami
I have many sweaters in my queue, including EZ’s green sweater, Summer’s End, Kelmscott, Darcy, Shalom cardigan, Kalani Craig’s half circle cardigan, Minimalist and Tempest
and I just last week bought lots of Cascade, to make Nora’s Sweater (cover of Interweave Winter 2009) and #22 Garter Yoke cardigan — can I get the 20% discount retroactively?
Knowing my problem with finishing sweaters, my favorite type of sweater is as seamless as possible, even better if there is something clever about the construction

I’m really not into knitting sweaters because of all the things you mentioned, like the time commitment. I could knit a vest though. Or the Featherweight Cardigan. That seems easy enough. My favorite sweater pattern is always whatever sweater I’ve finished up most recently – so in this case, Vaila from the Winter ’08 Twist Collective. I went with the recommended yarn, Malabrigo, so it’s the squishiest comfiest thing ever. (However, I’m planning my next sweater in fingering weight, I suspect that will take me a little longer than this last one did.)

By far, my favorite sweater is Emerald from Knitty. For a sweater, it is a relatively quick knit but has beautiful Raglan details, and fit well an many body types. (I’ve knit two of them to be sure!) My favorite sweater (that I’ve finished) is Tangled Yoke, but I have a February Lady Sweater on the needles too just waiting to be finished (1.5 sleeves to go). I don’t consider myself an advanced enough knitter yet to tackle a sweater on my own but my daughter guided (and I do mean guided in the most hands-on way possible) me through a simple sweater a couple of years ago. Simple, raglan sleeves, crew neck, long cause I like long sweaters. It’s pretty functional, and it really gets used almost daily each winter. If I were to start another sweater I wouldn’t know where to begin as I don’t remember how I knit it at all. Right now I am in my shawl phase. Maybe someday I’ll be knitting sweaters, but for now the Traveling Woman is my cup of tea.

I have 2 sizes of sweaters that I knit (and have plans to knit). one that fits me and my daughter, and with left-over lace weight yarn, sweaters for the 60cm resin dolls. have been collecting a lot of MadelineTosh lately, so very many colors. perfect for substituting for Rowan yarns. I either knit lace sweaters, or colorwork with one main color and just a little color pattern (kitten, flowers, etc.)on a corner of one front, and one side of the back bottom, well possibly a pinch on one sleeve.. My next project though is the cabled cross your heart kimono by Bergere de France, but want a hp slightly variegated yarn. such addictions, lace, color patterns, cables….

My favorite sweater pattern is a top down raglan sleeve crew neck pattern. With it being top down there are no seams to have to weave in or block straight. It easily accommadates any weight of yarn and any gauge. The best part, you get to try it on as you go for the PERFECT fit. You can also modify it to add in cables or blocks of various stitch work for texture.
But for the KAL, I have been anxiously waiting to start a February Lady Sweater. I love that it looks great on all shapes and sizes. Plus, with the fantastic score of Madeline Tosh in Tart over the holiday from you, I should have it done by Fling.
Good luck with whichever pattern you do.

Naming my favorite anything is so difficult! Ask for my favorite book, and I will give you a reading list that will keep you busy for months. Ask for my favorite recipe and I will practically supply you with a cookbook for all occasions. Sweaters are the same … sturdy-almost-outerwear ones, cozy ones for winter nights at home, stylish ones for work, lacy ones for celebrations … you see my problem? But I will try – for once – to mention just one. There’s a pattern by Veronik Avery that I saw for the first time quite some time ago, in the Ann Budd’s book The Best of Interweave Knits. It is called Threepenny Pullover Pattern, named for the Threepenny Opera by Kurt Weill. If you don’t know the pattern, I can describe it as classical Aran combined with great attention to detail or dressmakers craft. For example, it has side slits in the hem. I have knit a lot of sweaters over the years, with great yarn, great stranded colorwork etc., but very often the finishing or the shaping is not quite what it should be. This is why Veronik Avery’s patterns fascinate me so much.

It just needs sleeves, and I’ve tried and tried, but I was a newer knitter and I just couldn’t get it to work out. So I’m hoping now, with a little more experience, it will be fine.
After this one is done, I’m going to move on to the February Lady Sweater, I’ve got the yarn sitting and waiting….

I haven’t actually finished an adult sized sweater. My Mr Greenjeans is languishing on the needles because I think my gauge is off. That’s not deterring me though from planning my next sweater! I love the February Lady Sweater and have the yarn ready to go for that.

I’m not usually a sweater knitter, for myself. I have done some baby sweaters. I’ve really been wanting to do that easy “surprise jacket” by Zimmerman…I have it in an adult size…maybe now is the time for that!
Thx Sheri for all of the wonderful yumminess I get from TLE…I threw my hat into the sock ring, hope I get a place. I was in a couple of others last year as I couldn’t get into TLE’s…hopefully…

Hi Sheri – Like many of the others, I have only knit two adult sweaters in the past but quite a few baby sweaters. I prefer lace shawls or socks as sweaters take a lot of time and I hate the seaming. The top down cardigan was almost NO seams and my favourite – from the Cabin Fever book “Button Up Your Top Down” by Deb Gemmell, the “Basic Aran Cardigan” and I wear it all the time…

Also made a CPH and that was fun but no sweaters in the near future planned (although will check out greenjeans Sheri, thanks for the tip)

I have several favorite sweater patterns and I love making sweaters. The pattern I have chosen for the KAL is Kaleidoscope Yoke by Katie Himmelberg. I will be making it out of String Theory dk which I bought at Stitches East last Fall. It will make it doubly special that it was from Stitches and its for TLE KAL
My other favorite is a DROPS DESIGN “Drops Jacket” done in 2 colors. I have the yarn for this as well. It will be done in Wollmeise with a base of Dunkle Kirsche 100% and the contrast will be in Natural twin. The reason for the twin in contrast is to give the design a “fluffy” effect. Especially since its a snowflake pattern.
I am chosing the first mentioned for the KAL but if time allows I will do both.

I haven’t actually knit a sweater before, and I’m participating in the Ann Hansen Spring Fling KAL and I’m knitting the Whitfield Jacket for my DH. I much prefer knitting large projects (like a sweater) for someone much, much smaller than I am!! (Lucky DH!) One thing I’ve discovered–sweaters are a time commitment, and I like to flit from project to project. Difficult to stay focused…

I’m afraid I have sweater quantities for about 3 sweaters waiting for me–I’ve been scouring the sweater patterns on Ravelry for a while now. I think the first one I want to make is in Sanguine Gryphon’s QED; the pattern is Jordana Paige’s Amused, from Knitty Winter 2008. I plan to make it into a cardigan rather than a pullover.
And–you need to work on Gryphon so you can carry QED! It’s a great worsted, and I love the sheen of the BFL. Since you carry other Sanguine Gryphon yarns, would I still be able to enter this sweater in your KAL??

The only sweaters that I have ever completed are baby sweaters. They don’t take “forever” and they are extremely portable as a project. The other drawback is the expense of yarn in an xl or xxl size. Socks, gloves, and scarves are much more my “cup of tea”

I love the February Fitted Sweater and Coraline. I really want to make the Febuary Fitted in Madelinetosh Worsted but I knit too tightly and know I won’t be able to get gauge. So, I might end up making Coraline instead! I also love the Pinwheel sweater for kids and the DIC Tulips sweater and I have TONS of DIC scraps waiting to be knitted up for my two daughters. I love kid sweaters because they go SO fast!
angela said,

I have done a couple kid sweaters, and only one adult sweater. Well, I did one little lacy pullover, but it used less than 800 yards, so it can’t count as a sweater, right? I am knitting my first cardigan. So far it’s fun, but we’ll see when I have to assemble it!

I don’t know about favourite, but I have knit Bond by Kim Hargreaves 4 times. Does that count? Of my other sweaters, most of mine are designed by Kim Hargreaves. Does this mean I really love her or that I should branch out a little more? Kidding aside, her patterns are quite basic, classy and easy to wear. I always plan on knitting something more elaborate, but end up dashing off another Kim when it comes down to it.

I’ve made non-baby sweaters in the past, but haven’t mastered the arts of taking measurments and figuring ease, though I’m getting more skilled at adjusting the patterns to measurements I have in mind. My finishing skills are definately one of my weaker areas, so when I do make sweaters, I tend to go for ones that are knit in the round in few pieces. I’d like to learn to take measurements properly and get better at techniques for shaping, and try making sweaters with steeks (though I don’t have a sewing machine, which is a drawback in the steeking department, though I have read of ways to do it which don’t require machine stitching).
I do have some stash contents which include quantities of yarn suitable for making sweaters, and have CPH in my queue, especially since the Interweave Knits site has some very helpful shaping tips for the larger sizes of that sweater.
To my surprise, I find that I like fine gauge knitting and small projects.
So bring on the Wollmeise!

I have knit one sweater, but never seamed it up. It has been sitting in pieces for over 3 years. Not only did it turn out funny colors because I ran out of the main color! LOL! But then it was seaming funny and I was afraid. I am afraid of making another sweater, especially since my measurements would definitely require major shaping. I hope to work up the courage.

I don’t really have a favorite sweater pattern. I’m sort of a “one and done” knitter, so I rarely repeat anything. Right now I’m knitting Emerald from Knitty in a lovely bulky merino/alpaca blend and loving it. Since the yarn is so thick, the acres of stockinette are flying by. Just as I begin to get bored, I’ve got a new increase or decrease to pay attention to. That’s the best kind of pattern for me!

My favorite easy sweater pattern is the Knitting Pure & Simple Neckdown Cardigan. I have probably made a dozen of these sweaters for various people. It’s good, mindless knitting for when I work at the yarn shop or for bringing along to a meeting. An added bonus is you can try it on as you go along and make sure the body and sleeve lengths are a perfect fit!

I’ve knit Zillah from Simply Noro twice and I’m thinking about a 3rd. It’s a sleeveless turtleneck that I wear over a long sleeve T. The pattern is basically 1/2 solid and 1/2 varigated worsted weight, so lots of options outside of Noro and it’s a fast knit. All good things.

My all-time sweater pattern is one from those classic Vogue sweater books by Christina Probert – it’s a design from 1980, and is a simple moss-stitch, crew-neck sweater, preferably knit in “nubbly” yarn. Well, I’ve made that sucker in everything from high-end wool/silk/linen blend to Red Heart, and it’s just the most perfect weekend sweater ever. One of my college roommates kept borrowing the Red Heart one I made, in fact.
I do love to knit sweaters – my biggest problem is finding chunks of time in my week when i can actually knit them and see progress.

I’m not a sweater knitter, although I aspire to be! I have made one sweater…Wicked. It turned out beautifully and would have been amazing, had it not been so large there was no way it would fit anyone! As I knit it, I could see that it was going to be too large. I knit on. I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t as large as it looked. I knit on. I could see that I was using more yarn than I should have been using. I knit on. It felt like a blanket sitting on my lap. I knit on. I knew I should frog it and start over because it was way too big. I knit on. I don’t know if I thought it would magically fit when it was done, or what, because I continued to knit, knowing full well that it was huge, but somehow fooling myself into believing that I was wrong. I finished it. It was huge. I wear it around the house on cold days because I just can’t bring myself to frog the very first (and only) sweater I ever made.

I’m not much of a sweater knitter – my last serious attempt at a sweater is still waiting for me to re-chart the decreases due to uncooperative row gauge – but I did have a positive experience knitting a sweater for a coworker once. I had brought a lace shawl into work and it reminded her of a sweater she had. She brought in her sweater and asked if I could knit one just like it but in the lace pattern I was using. It was a very different construction and I do enjoy a challenge, so I gave it a try and it worked.

But in an enthusiastic burst one day on vacation about 4 years ago, I went into my favorite knitting store (we go to the same place every year) and asked if I was a good enough knitter to make the vest in the window! So far (ahem, 20-25 years or so) my very favorite sweater i’ve knit was for my son when he was about 8 or 10–it was the “Cashel Child’s Sweater in Celtic Knotwork” from AStarmore’s book, The Celtic Collection. Knit in Cascade’s LanaD’Oro in a nice emerald shade chosen by Terry himself, he loved it, wore it, and even better his older teenage sister thought she could squeeze into it when he was growing out of it!

I am just not a sweater knitter. I have a couple sweater UFO’s around and the only things I seem to finish are smaller things like baby sweaters, shawls, and many, many hats. I’m a good knitter but somehow I never seem to finish a sweater. I can blame the toddler right? (Even if this behavior started before he was born???)

I love knitting sweaters. The first two items I ever knit were a simple raglan in wool and then a short sleeved in cotton ribbon.
Now I live in such a hot country that for 10 and a half months of the year it is too hot to even knit sweaters never mind about wearing them.
Instead I spend most of my time knitting socks and afghans as presents for friends living in colder climates. I have promised myself a sweater though I’m just debating between Thermal or Tubey (both Knitty patterns)

Sweaters are not really my “thing”. I done several and have had one in my WIP pile for over 10 years and that was one of my resolutions was to rip it out and donate the yarn. I’m a sock and shawl knitter basically but it probably has to do with being a larger size and most time having to fiddle with the math to make it fit.

I have never knitted a sweater before. My 14-year-old son LOVES sweaters. His classmates are my motivation in knitting him a sweater. They always ask him, “Did your mother knit that sweater?” So over the long weekend, I looked through ALL the books and magazines I have to find him the perfect first sweater. It was in the issue of Verena Knitting Fall 2008. It is called Ambitious, a ribbed sweater. The ribbing is of various widths. Really cute! Now I have the task of looking for some yarn. He would like a maroon sweater. Does anyone have any suggestions? Here is the link of the sweater. Thanks!

I have a couple favorite sweater patterns. I enjoyed making the Apres Surf hoodie from Interweave Knits and Arisaig from Knitty. And I love wearing my Thermal sweater from Knitty too. It made a nice warm sweater that isn’t too bulky. I think I need to knit more sweaters, though first I should try and finish the one I started last winter.

I’ve only made one sweater and that was when I first started knitting, Tubey. After that, I was pregnant -once with my daughter, and again with my son – so my, eh em, bust size was always the issue. I’m still nursing so the milk factories are still rather large but maybe it is time to jump into making a sweater again. The Central Park hoodie? The Mariah? Gosh, there are so many to choose from!

When I first started knitting (30 plus years ago) I knit sweaters for myself and for my husband. I favored heavy wool sweaters with cables or patterned yokes. (I seemed to have a lot more time in those days.)
Now most of my projects are smaller and quicker-to-complete accessories; scarves, socks, bags, etc. (Can someone tell me how my Jolly Green Giant Girasole fits that pattern? Oh, never mind–)

I think my current favorite sweater pattern is still the Central Park Hoodie. I need to make cardigans, because I need to be able to take the sweater off one shoulder or whole arm, or have it half on & half off, because I get hot and cold, and it varies, sometimes within the hour or a few minutes. A pullover does not give me that option. Also, I have learned that layering works best for me.

I’ve only made one adult-sized sweater. When I was learning how to knit, I made a sweater for myself, but that was ages ago and I must’ve been around 10 at the time. Right now I have the yarn for Eunny Jang’s Autumn Rose pullover, but I’m a little intimidated by it. In addition to the colorwork, I want to lengthen the sleeves and give it a v-neck. I have my eye on Anne Hanson’s sprossling, it would be awesome if she releases it in time for me to use it in the challenge.

I love looking at sweater patterns, but have never followed one. I make my own designs, usually incorporating features from several patterns that I’ve seen and liked. Two favorites that I love are Nora Gaughan’s Tilted Duster and Schaefers Sandra Kimono Jacket. The Kimono is simply styled yet quick to knit with textural interest with a seed stitch border and alternating blocks of stockinette and garter. It only took 2 weeks of evenings to complete it. It’s in a worsted weight (I used Schaefer Marjaana from stash) I’m wanting to start Dolce Handknits Tribeca in Madelaine Tosh worsted in Fjord colorway so I might join the KAL just to keep on track with it!

I’m going to knit a sweater for my son again, even if he only wears it once a year. This one will be in a man’s size so he can wear it for a long time (if he likes it). I’m going to experiment more with finer yarns, blends and non-wool yarns for cool comfort.

I think my favorite sweater/jacket pattern has to be the Einstein – short version from The Knit Stitch book. Although it is endless garter stitching, it makes for a great TV knitting project and it comes together like a dream. As soon as I finish my current one I plan to throw another on the needles!

My favourite vest is the Shalom (free from Ravelry). Knit in Bulky, it’s super quick. It’s knit top down in the one piece – a perfect knitting experience if you pick a squishy single ply yarn in a gorgeous colour and finish it with ‘one-of-a-kind’ glass buttons (as did I!).

I’m generally not a sweater knitter. In the eight years I’ve been knitting (jeez, has it been that long already?), I’ve managed to complete two sweaters…and left at least three half finished in a box somewhere.
I do, however, have a bunch of Malabrigo Worsted stashed for a February Lady Sweater for myself and the pattern recommended yarn (novel concept, no?) for a Tempest for my best friend. I think this quarter’s challenge sounds like an excellent opportunity to get in gear on a sweater

All I make is womans sweaters. It’s so hard to decide which one is my fav. right now I am loving to wear this bulky cardigan I made a few months ago called “The Lion Neck Cardigan” by Wendy Bernard from her book Custom Knits.

I love the idea of a sweater challenge. Question, can we make up our own patterns for the challenge?

It is a tough decision, but I am going to pick….
Endless Knitted Cardi Shawl by Jennifer Hansen
I really like how versitile it is.
Wait, there’s more…
She even has a video showing how it looks wearing it several different ways.
Love it
Thank you Sheri

I don’t have a favorite sweater pattern, though I have made the Feb Lady Sweater twice. I tend to like patterns by Ysolda and Stitch Diva. Oh, and I am currently working on Chinese Lace Pullover–just have to do the sleeves. It hasn’t gotten much attention since I had my first kid 5 weeks ago though.

I am in the middle of knitting the Sylvi (by Mari Muinonen) hooded cable sweater coat; I have a long way to go, but can’t wait to finish it. I am also knitting the Corrie fair Isle vest (knit Picks)-it is progressing nicely. I have the Jacquard Vest pattern (Knit Picks) in my “must do” pattern file and would love to start that after I finish the Corrie vest! Might be a good time to buy yarn and start it for the KAL

I have knit a few sweaters, in fact knitting one now. Don’t have a favorite pattern but would love to knit one with a hood. I am not good at the finishing so would like to knit one from the top down. I knit 2 baby sweaters last week and they were knit from the top down. They turned out great and knit up fast. Will keep looking for a hooded sweater to knit.

I am a sock knitter, but I am seriously considering joining the sweater KAL. The last sweater I finished knitting was in 1970. The KAL will serve as inspiration and motivation. Thank you for the lovely yarn you make available!

I would like to be a sweater knitter, but think I like shrugs better for knitting myself.

I am also a huge fan of the “Hey Teach” sweater. Because I live in Northern California we do not get a lot of wear out of heavy wool sweaters. Therefore my favorite vest pattern is Sandi Luck’s “Diamond Rain Vest” (Ravelry link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/diamond-rain).
