Things to Distract Me at Work … and a CONTEST!
Loopy Elf Donna got a new puppy named Lucy. Is she not the cutest thing? She had just been to the vet, so she was exhausted from her big morning out.
She posed:
She checked out Loopy:
And then she zonked out, fast asleep.
Needless to say, all work of any kind stopped while Lucy was visiting. We all stood around and watched her sleep and talked about how darned cute she is.
So this month’s contest question is: What distracts you at work? Whether you work in the house or out of the house, I know there are things that pull you away from what you are intending to do. (Ravelry? I’m talking about you.) What distracts you?
Leave your answer in the comments and we will randomly draw names of winners next week. The prize – $25 Loopy Ewe Gift Certificates, so that you can splurge on some new yarn!
(Speaking of contests, have you clicked “like” to join our Loopy Ewe group on Facebook? We hold 24 Hour Quick Quizzes over there from time to time, with Loopy Ewe Gift Certificates for prizes. Don’t miss out!)

Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter … gotta unplug if I’m going to get anything done. Easier said than done when you do web development for a living!

Every day while I’m getting things done around the house, I have to stop now and then and go on Ravelry to look at my favorite threads, new patterns, yarns, etc. It’s a distraction, but the good kind. Gives me a break (or several) from the mundane. And I actually thought “Ravelry” before I read it in your blog. May not be a unique distraction, but it’s a truthful one.

Gotta be the internet – I go on for just a minute, and the next thing I know, a few hours have just been blown!

My favorite blogs distract me! I love checking to see what new posts are up. I also can be distracted by the lure of my favorite games on FB, or actually just checking what’s going on with my friends on FB.

I’m a stay-at-home momma to a 2 year old and a 1 year old, so I don’t get a lot of free time, but I try to sneak in a few minutes of internet time a lot throughout the day. I fully intend to just check my email but then I get sucked into ravelry, the blogs I read, facebook, etc.

Blogs and Ravelry! Most definitely!

Since I’m lucky enough to work from home, knitting distracts me ALL the time! My knitting chair is just steps from my desk (bad idea), so I find myself taking way too many “breaks” to do just a few more rows. Good thing my job has a deadline. It’s the only thing that keeps me from blowing hours of work time on knitting.
P.S. If Lucy needs a babysitter…just sayin’.

Right now it’s the oak tree outside my window. It is red and orange, with a few partially green leaves left. In the afternoons the sun hits it perfectly, and makes it look like it’s glowing. I could stare at it all day. I almost feel like I’m sitting in it, it’s so close.

Google Blog reader and Plurk are my biggest distractions. I have the best of intentions, I only plan to pop in for a moment to see what everyone is up to, the next thing I know it’s 20 minutes later and I should have been working on something.

I do work in a lovely historic home on the river which has french doors which open out to a wide veranda – sounds very romatic doesn’t it?? Lots of walkers, joggers, bikers are up and down the street along the river – that can be distracting but mostly I distract myself if (cough cough) blogs and yes Rav too can be a distraction. I just consider it my mental health break time since I don’t actually get up and walk to a break room like some people do. Thanks – I would love to win the TLE gifty. Melody

Really it’s the internet that distracts me the most at work. I try to limit my time on Ravelry and Facebook to just lunch but then there is IMing with friends and searching for information like the meaning of “sacre bleu”. And currently I’m distracted by your contest. Thanks for the distractions…now back to work.

The Loopy Ewe website is one of the most distracting things at work along with several knitting blogs, Facebook, Ravelry; the giant pile of corn outside my window that has accumulated since harvest began. Not to mention the gorgeous Fall weather we are enjoying in Nebraska.

To echo everyone else, yes Ravelry and knitting blogs distract me the most. I dream about all of the things I want to knit, sometimes it’s torture!

Castiron said,

The Internet. Hunger and the ensuing search for snacks. Abrupt loud laughter from coworkers, because I *have* to go see what it’s about.
But really, my biggest distraction at work is work tasks that I don’t need to do right now but that are more interesting/fun than what I’m supposed to be doing right now. I can’t get through my email box without bouncing around through six different programs and starting two or three other things before remembering that I was processing my email.

Cookbooks! And books in general. I’m a librarian and sometimes I go back to the stacks for one thing for a legitimate work related reason and end up coming back to my desk with a stack of books I just have to check out and take home!

I am a teacher. Since I have no access to computer of the fun kind at work – people distract me. There is always some drama that falls. It could be kids or staff. There is always something happening that challenges concentration.

Dude, it’s totally Ravelry. I think, “I wonder how that wollmeise would look in a citron” and then I look up all the citrons made out of WM. Or I browse Loopy Ewe, and then go look up all the yarns on Ravelry to see how they knit up. I spend a lot more time dreaming of knitting than I actually get to spend knitting.

Ravelry, favorite knitting blogs – are my downfall (in fact I need to turn Ravelry off right now!).
Lucy – oh, puppy love! I really want a dog. We’ve been dogless for a few years now and I feel the pull down that slippery slope again. We’d have to re-acclimate the 3 cats though.

I think the better question is “what doesn’t distract me at work?”
The short list, in this very moment – your website, Ravelry, Facebook and the knitting that’s across the room from me. Anything to avoid the to do list….

The biggest distraction at work (I work at a university) usually comes at around 3:30pm when the ladies in the office and me get a little punch-drunk from sitting at our desks all day. It ususally involves cheesy jokes and/or magazines.

Ravlery distracts me. The knitting in my bag calls to me at times. The worst distraction is a yarn update at The Loopy Ewe. I’d better not be doing anything important when one of those comes along.

Seriously? What distracts me from work??? LOOPY !!!!! I’m always so eager to read the next post – I actually get disappointed when you don’t post fast enough Sheri!! lol Then I remind myself that a) you’re a human *supposedly* and b) I’m at work !!
So I take a deep breath and then dive back into my mountain of paper. . . and daydream of lucious mounds of yarn lol : )
I would love to bring my knitting / crocheting to work every day – I did that one day last week because I had to finish a project for a birthday deadline. But in general it really doesn’t lend itself to the right crafting atmosphere anyway.

I do love seeing what’s new, always missing Wollmeise, but seeing what you and Loopy are up to.

Well, I work at the local yarn shop, so my job is very distracting in itself. When the UPS man comes in, everyone stops what they’re doing and rushes to see where the boxes are from. A lot of distraction happens when new magazines/books/patterns come in and we decide that picking out yarn for yet another new project is more important then filing invoices. Time stops when the cats jump up on my lap or keyboard and demand attention. They dont get that “Work” at home means work, not ‘play with me, feed me, admire me.’ Luckily they keep a demanding nap schedule that allows for a real workday.

OMG! She is so cute! Sure a cute puppy like that at work would be a distraction – a welcome one!
Since Ravelry was blocked at work along with most sports/entertainment/social networking/web messaging sites, there’s not much that distracts me. I try to keep up with blogs I follow though and I am always composing my blog entries, scheduling them to publish on specific dates so that when I get home I won’t have to think about what to write.
So people think I am always in front of the computer when really WordPress does that job for me.

Well, I would say that the internet distracts me, but they took away almost all of the good spots–like Ravelry, etc. But, at least they left TLE alone! I think what bothers me is folks going to a meeting (across the hall from me and then to get coffee (right next to me). I know they mean well, but sometimes I just need to concentrate–and not talk!!

Lucy is adorable! My mind is what distracts me at work – when I’m working on a tedious project, my mind wanders and I think about stuff I want to knit and then I wonder if TLE has something in stock and then I check my wishlist . . . I’m sorry, did you ask me something?

I have several things…unfortunately! lol 1. If I get on Ravelry it definitely distracts me but sometimes is a very needed break! 2. The office ‘gifted’ me with a betta fish who has become the office mascot. I couldn’t stand to think of that poor little fish living in some small bowl so “Charlie” has a 6.6 gallon bookcase tank that sits on one end of my desk. Charlie and his companion snails distract me often.
and 3. I have two big windows overlooking Main street in old downtown Norman. I have a view of a popular diner across the street and see lots of coming and goings. When the earthquake hit here two weeks ago I was staring out one window watching people pour out of the buildings to see what was going on. A major distraction!

Heck of a -cute- puppy. The little things are what distract: anything that can have focus, can steal focus, anything that might need some attention. If we are talking about fun things that distract me, it’s totally the Internet – Google reader, Ravelry, Go Fug Yourself and Regretsy are the top culprits. Non-fun things – I work in an open office, so if someone comes in with a question and the person they want isn’t there, they ask me – whether it has anything to do with my job or not. Usually it’s no big deal, but some days it turns into interruption after interruption and it drives me a little crazy!

My husband & I are self employed, but lately he’s been home more than usual (blame the economy) and while he has less work, I have the same. He wants to talk while I’m working and that’s distracting.
Also, there has been major road construction in my neighborhood for over 2 months – we live on a couple acres on a “private” road that dead-ends. I’m not used to hearing many vehicles on my road, so now with big-rigs and big tractors and big noises, I’m pretty distracted.
I’d like to be just distracted by knitting.

Ha, I am a elem. art teacher…distractions are an every minute occurance…such as when a child has to go potty in the middle of my lesson, so I ask her to wait a minute…so she wets her pants…but that same child was in the bathroom line only 10 minutes ago before she came to art but “didn’t have to go then”…ah. And ladies, who can even rev up the computer to go on ravelry when children are tugging at your sleeve? I dream of ravelry when I get home, and only after dinner dishes are done, grades are put in for the day, and when I sit in the chair, I doze and opps, no ravelry again. I have these spurts of time every month or so, when I actually can knit and socialize. I was on facebook, but our school district feels teachers should not be on there so…I am alas not part of the cyber socialite world. So when you see me online…it’s like a Christmas present…speaking of CHRISTMAS….I HAVE BEEN SO STRESSED that I have been playing Christmas Carols in the car to and from work…because I NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS NOW!!! take care, my friends…Blessings be, Jo

I have lots of distractions at home that prevent me from my housework on days off. Mostly things like ravelry, knitting, facebook, knitting, and more ravelry. I periodically go and read one of the newer news stories and just shake my head at what people will comment. It’s sometimes sad that they have nothing to do but leave rude comments.
Occasionally, I do look for yarn but they watch what we look at and block some of it so it is hit or miss.

It all depends…I have a couple of different jobs, tutoring and teaching medical students how to do pelvic exams. The first one, I get distracted if my tutee is blathering on with ridiculously complex questions that are unrelated to their current problem (which makes me an horrible tutor, I think!). As for the second…well, I can’t imagine a job where being focused is more important! But sometimes, if my student is a very good-looking young man, I forget what I’m supposed to be teaching!

I don’t work outside the home so my distractions are varied depending on my ‘to-do list’ for the day. Usually it’s my two cats who stop me because their antics are just so funny to watch. A toy to be played with, a goofy mistep making them glare as if it was my fault, or a snuggly cuddle and purr. They’re all way more fun than the usual laundry or housework that forever calls me

Ravelry is a huge distraction – what stash is up for sale, what new pattern is available; what’s going on in the fiber universe. The other distraction is knitting blogs. Seems like I just have to “check in” on my favorite few every day.

I manage to do a good job distracting myself with the internet while I’m trying to work. But I also share an office, and anytime other people come in or out and start talking to my officemate, I find it impossible to concentrate.
Shalanda said,

Most of my distractions come from the temperature. It’s so COLD in my office that it causes me to find amusing ways to get and stay warm. Also, it causes me to frequently search Ravelry for hats, shawls, cardigans, etc for potential methods to stay warm. LOL

Obviously since I’m writing this comment at work, the internet distracts me at work–or at least at my morning job that pays the bills. I’m on facebook, plurk, ravelry, online shopping, etc.
At my other job, the one that supports my fiber addiction, knitting/spinning/weaving distracts me. I usually work on Sundays when it’s slow slow slow. So I plan knitting projects which means I have to work more to buy yarn for said projects.

Distractions? I work from home, so have no coworkers to look over my shoulder. So I am distracted by anything and everything I have bookmarked on this computer. that includes blogs, personal email, Plurk, Ravelry…
The one thing I do NOT check (often) while at work is Facebook. Everything else, however, seems to be fair game.
And occasionally, I’ll let my current knitting be distracting.

I’ll be trying to find out how to make Kefir and spend half an hour reading gossip about Mr. Sutherland, whom I really don’t even care about. Chrismas garland turns into Judy Garland, Squash recipes turns into the rules for Squash – did you know the balls are color coded based on their speed and bounciness? The way my cats sleep, they seem to hold the key to total relaxation and I’m trying to emulate it. Knitting in general, magazines, yarn, ideas, day dreaming about projects. Watching our garden dragonfly buzz around, trying to own the front yard and boss all other insects in it. Enjoying the sound of the water features.

But when dear daughter comes into the room ,stands next to me and has one of her “other” pet family on her (either her corn snake or her new addition, a desert iguana) , it just sort of ruins my concentration, or desire to be in the same room. gotta say that the iguana is cute though. I work from home. Ravelry, IM’g with family members, plus reading a number of newspaper web sites across the country, and watching Food Network manage to distract me from my work. (I am one of many who choose not to do FaceBook or Twitter or the like. Those social networking sites are great ways to get your personal information stolen, per numerous news stories on the TV networks and newspapers, so you can have your identity stolen, not by normal users, but by thieves who make a huge fortune off of the ID thefts. And that doesn’t even count the new Trojan Horse having to do with Video on FaceBook and other social networking sites this past week that even affects Macs, in addition to Windows, for the first time . I have resisted those forever, and I will continue to stay off of those. Ravelry is different, it should be ok.) And don’t click on links on FaceBook or open emails that are unexpected or have to do with Video, as these are probably the Trojan Horse.
On a brighter subject, I love puppies & puppy pictures! They are awesome!

The only 3 things that distract me from my job (which is teaching/subbing) is, in this order, F5ing during lunch and recess breaks during possible Wollmeise updates on TLE on my iPhone, then Ravelry if I have a computer to sit with, and lastly, if I have no computers and go to the teacher’s lounge for lunch- then I tend to sit and knit for ten minutes while my soup cools down!

My biggest distraction at work is the view out my 20th floor window. I work in cubicle-land, but was lucky enough to snag a cubicle by a window that faces east, so I see Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains, and if I stand next to the window and crane my neck, I can see Mount Rainier. My biggest distraction this time of year is the sunrise. We have had some amazing ones this month, and I usually arrive just about the time the show gets started. I always have my camera with me, so I may spend a few minutes snapping pictures, too.

Having just been “missed” by three tornado like storms here in North Alabama by a few short miles or less!!! Yikes!!! I have to say the weather interupts my day…daily!! I go out side and walk during the nice weather, when we have it. Watch the winter storms roll across the country and into the Northeastern states (childhood home where I learned to knit), track the hurricanes in the Atlantic with their projected paths (read possible rain for North Alabama and the dreaded “possible associated tornado(s)”) and of course the daily projected local weather. I am watching and checking the weather and sometimes…. knitting!

When I have lots to do, I avoid my upstairs workstation, as that is where my computer and printer are. I can get sucked into any number of pattern sites and KAL’s in a matter of minutes, and those minutes then grow into hours. Suddenly my noon “just checking my email” becomes “Janet, dinner is ready”!!! No wonder DH feels neglected. I love Ravelry for all of its ideas, but it can really take hours and hours away.
After two years in Mafia Wars, I exited that game, as it was getting to be nearly an obsession with me–but I haven’t saved time because I just spend more time on Rav and stalking TLE for their sneakups!!!!

Distractions are what I do at work…Walk-ins from students/faculty/staff mean I must drop what I’m doing to help them – and I do that gladly!
Other distractions include cell phone calls, arrival of inter-office mail, impromptu meetings with the VP/President/Deans, incoming weather front (I have a VERY big window – floor to ceiling!), unexpected celebrations (birthdays/years of service), fire drills (or actual fires/equipment failures, which require evac from buildings)…
Can you guess I work for a very busy community college? But – I get to knit every day at lunch and that keeps me sane after all the distractions!

I have cat toys that I have purchased for them that they don’t seem to like as much as other things. They are into everything, so I guess what distracts me while I am working at home are the kittens.
