What’s On Your Desktop?
Remember last week’s blog contest, where I asked what distracts you from work? (Or knitting?) Many of us are distracted by the same things, and many of those things have to do with the computer. I think that I need to put the computer off limits in the evenings, with just a quick final check of emails before I go to bed. I get a lot of knitting done when I actually sit down and do it, but the trouble is that in the evenings, I’m frequently clicking around online, checking out blogs, yarn, and patterns. (Lest you think I won’t be able to stay on top of important things if I give up this trolling time, rest assured that I also do this during the day at work, since it’s part of my job!) I can only imagine how much more knitting I would get done. And right now, just before the holidays? It’s time to ramp it up and get moving on the gift knitting. Otherwise, no one is going to be getting any handknits from me this year.
One way I’m going to keep myself on track with my knitting focus, is to have that top photo as my desktop background for awhile. It’s a picture of Claudia’s Wollmeise shop in Germany. Knitting Daughter and I spent a lot of time here when we visited her, and this particular picture was taken the day we got to hang out for the whole time it was open, just knitting, chatting and drinking coffee on the orange couches. It was the best day! It’s a good reminder of why I love to knit, and I think it will be fun to have on my desktop for the next month. (Last month, I had this second photo as my wallpaper – a shot of the Cascade 220 wall here at Loopy. Equally knit-worthy and inspiring!)
So, what’s on your desktop, being used as the wallpaper? Does it make you smile? (Note – I used to keep my favorite photo of Web Guy and Knitting Daughter as my wallpaper, but it made me miss them even more. Every time I booted up the computer in the morning and saw their smiling faces looking out at me, I had a sad moment. Not that I don’t have eleventy billion other photos of them around my desk anyways. But somehow seeing them on my computer was an extra sad jolt in the morning ….)

Right now, my desktop is a picture of the sun rising in Myrtle Beach. I took this when we were on vacation last month. My desktop is usually a picture that I’ve taken–daffodils in the spring, a double rainbow that we saw on a different vacation, fall leaves, my kids running ahead of me on our driveway, etc.

My wallpaper is a fond memory of this summer’s vacation. We went to the national park in Gatlinburg. DH bought me a DVD of pictures of the park in all seasons. You can set them as wallpaper or screen saver (or both). Every day I see a new scene – fall in the mist today.

My desktop at work is a picture of my beloved 4 legged kids, Rex and Robie. Robie has a big goofy grin on her face and it always makes me smile. Desktop at home is a picture of a sock knit by Anna Zillborg that I took during her class at Sock Summit last year. The colorwork is amazing.

I am right with you on having a picture of my kids on my desk top. I only get to see each of them once a year and seeing them continually makes me tear up. They are grown and live on the other side of the country. So, I have a picture of my puppies and a picture of my cat wearing a knitted baby hat and I alternate each month.

At home, I have a photo I took of an injured little kitten whom I rescued from the middle of a busy street last month. Though I couldn’t keep her myself — my two cats would have pitched fits — I was able to find her a great home with a first-time cat “owner” (I prefer to think of it as “cat support staff,” and I’m sure my cats do, too!). Kitten is doing great now, her injured leg has almost completely healed, and her new “mom” and “grandmom” are absolutely besotted.
At work, it’s a scene of trees in winter from the default graphic folder in Microsoft, though I have so many file icons on the desktop, I can barely see the forest for the files!

After years of analysis, I found that I needed a very peaceful landscape as my screensaver. Personal photos were too distracting. Yarn related photos tempted me to knit. Gardens just reminded me that I need to work in mine. Close-ups with lovely old houses and castles just made me want to be there.
I found that landscapes with depth and mystery to them were the best for me. Friends in Ireland (he’s a photographer) send me photos from their trips that work out perfectly. Green Irish landscapes, seascapes, etc. Here is an example of what I mean from one of their beautiful books: http://www.obrien.ie/book897.cfm
If you click on the book, you can see examples.

Well, at home I have a picture of my senior puppygirl Merlyn when she was a youngster and in show hair, with a Nylabone in her mouth. When she was young, she always had a toy in her mouth, usually a bone. She still likes her toys, but it’s a challenge playing fetch now because she’s blind.
She gets a kick out of standing ready and me tossing or rolling the toy so it touches her front paws. She picks it up and prances around like a big deal!
I’ve been unemployed for about 5 months, but when I was, the work computer had ever changing scenes on the screen saver, and I usually set the desktop on a whim. The photos, which I burned to disk and now have at home, are wolves, my poodles, horses, sheep, neolithic stone monuments and a few nature scenes.
The sheep are really fun. I have one shot I found online of a bunch of sheep just after sheering, so the coat lengths are all short. They’re solid colors and feeding, so all you see is the backs. Looks like chenille on the hoof!
Off to knit on a shawl — Cheers!

I used to always have lovely yarn photos as my desktop. For the past several months, though, I’ve had Jayne from Firefly as my desktop. It makes me very happy.

My wallpaper at home and work is of Cahas Knob, a mountain in Virginia. My family and family friends live in the shadow of it, and the photo is a fall photograph. I miss the beauty of the Blue Ridge so much. It’s also a reminder of who I am at the core.

My current desk top is Star Trek The Next Generation (Star Trek TNG for those of us who refer to it fairly often) cast all wearing lovely hand knit hats. Someone photo shopped the hats on to their heads and it’s just about perfect combination of two things I enjoy.

My home computer wallpaper rotates photos – right now I’m using scenes from Korea. I love it, because it reminds me of our family trip to Seoul a couple of years ago to pick up our younger son.
At work, I have a photo from the program I support – our new airplane, arriving at our location with one of the airplanes it will be replacing. It’s such a neat thing to be a part of, that I like to look at it for inspiration on the tough days.

My desktop rotates photos on the desktop. My laptop has a gorgeous picture from a few years ago of Walden Pond during autumn. It has the trees in full color reflecting up from the water. So cool,

Right now, my desktop is a photo of my grandaughter–laughing in my old wood rocking chair. She is so sweet and it makes me smile! I just changed it from a vacation photo of my husband and me with a background of beautiful orange fall color in the New York Fingerlakes last year that I looked at all year.
Yarn goodness might be up next….

Oh..you’re going to love this, Sheri…..talking about sadness. The graduation video display of pictures of my last child who graduated this year (and is in St. Louis!!!) and the other sibs, runs on my desktop….ALL those pix of them thru the years!!! talking about sadness/happy thoughts……I get a wee bit melancholy but it’s nice to see them, too…babies and all.

I have a photo of my back garden as my desktop. This was at my house in Scarborough, North Yorkshire (and it is the Scarborough of the song “Are you going to Scarborough fair?”)
I worked hard on my garden and loved it, but most of the plants I have in the picture will not grow here in Colorado at 7000ft! So I like to keep it as a reminder of what I could once grow!!

I have webshots on my computer, so my image changes every day. A lot of them are nature scenes. Today’s is a big wave. A lot of the others are from the digital art of Linda Bergkvist (http://www.furiae.com/popup.php?image=glimpseofsummer is a great example of her lighter work).

Well, my desktop isn’t yarn, but it’s the next best thing…it’s a great picture I took at the Chihuly exhibit in Grand Rapids, MI at the Meijer Gardens. His wonderful outdoor/garden glass creations are fantastic and inspiring…like beautiful hand dyed yarn!!

Presently (and for the next five months) I have an ultrasound picture of my first grandchild who will arrive in April. My daughter and son-in-law live far, far away which makes me sad, but the picture makes me happy.

My desktop is a photo from our honeymoon last year – a picture of the Acropolis! We went to Greece so I could meet my husband’s extended family for the first time, and I love ancient archaeology. I’m always happy when I see it

oh, you shouldn’t have asked!
my desktop shows the maiden launch of Space Shuttle Discovery in April 1984. Discovery is my favorite orbiter and my desktop photo is usually a view of her – the glass cockpit, flying around the International Space Station, being mated to the rest of the stack in the Vehicle Assembly Building, launch, landing. the images are almost endless and I have a bunch of them.
I know non-NASA geeks will think this is dumb but Discovery is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen (yes, I actually got to see her once!!! they were rolling her out from the VAB to the launch pad while we were on vacation!! she was 300 feet in front of me!!!). I adore her and I can’t believe we’re going to put Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour in museums just because… well, just because.
if you can get to the Space Coast at the right time to see and feel the sight and thunder of one of the (hopefully three) remaining launches, do it. you’ll never regret it and maybe you’ll love them like I do.

I custom made a desktop because of all the holiday knitting I have to get done. I put a two month calendar view on the right side that shows November & December w/ Christmas circled in red. On the right side of the screen I put the list of things I need to make and underneath that I put a picture of yarn just for some inspiration. Hopefully this can keep me on task!

My main laptop wallpaper is a photo I took of Squam Lake in NH, looking over one of the docks of Rockywald-Deephaven camp. It’s about one of my favorite places in the entire world.
My other laptop’s wallpaper is an XKCD cartoon – this one here http://xkcd.com/137/ – that reminds me that there is more to life than my job I don’t love and endlessly pushing refresh on the Internet. The language at the end is a little rough, but I’m okay with that, personally.

I like to use the wallpapers that ScoutJ puts up on her blog each month! This month I’m using the flowers at work, and when I get around to updating the home computer, may use the railroad pic.
That flowers pick is all the pretty colors that brighten my day, even though I only get to look at the wallpaper first and last thing. The rest of the time, something is open on the screen!
So yes, it makes me smile at least twice a day!

Like others on here, after seeing your photo of Cascade yarn, it is now on my desktop. Had a picture of a beautiful azalea and other flowers in my yard, but was tired of it. Now I have YARN INSPIRATION! Thanks.
