Lots of Opinions
Thanks for weighing in with your Club Loopy opinions. We knew you’d have some! I posted this over on the Loopy Groupie board on Ravelry, but for those of you not over there, I wanted to share our thought process on this. We always listen to you, but you do know that your opinions differ, right? So what we do is take: Opinion A + Opinion B + What’s best for the long-term success of The Loopy Ewe = how we roll. Here are just some of the opinions offered about sock club over the past couple of years:
- Love it! Don’t change a thing.
- Tired of socks and have too much sock yarn. Please offer other choices.
- Wish you’d have more semi-solids in the club.
- Wish you’d have more exclusive multi-colors. I can get every color of semi-solid from many different places – those aren’t exclusive.
- I’m so upset that we didn’t get any bags this year and Loopy Lite got a cool bag.
- I have way too many bags. No more bags.
- One can never have enough bags – bring them on!
- Can’t we prepay and get a discount on the cost?
- I like paying month by month.
- Love the extras.
- Don’t need the extras.
- Can you do themed kits with lots of extras?
- Why don’t you open up more spots so more people can get in?
- Why can’t you do a smaller club so that you can use more indie dyers?
- Love being surprised by the kit. Don’t tell us anything about it.
- I don’t like surprises. I want to know what’s in there before I buy it.
- Can you include a real sheep in the next kit? (kidding. Just wondered if you were still reading…)
Sock clubs have changed so much since we started ours back in 2007. There were just a couple of them back when we started. For that first one, I hoped that I could fill 50 spots, and I was so unsure about the whole thing that I told people to just email me if they would like a spot. (Didn’t work so well. We had more than double that amount within the first two hours. Live and learn.) Now almost everyone offers some kind of a club (lots of options for all of you), so this might be the year to finish ours out and try something new. We’ll see how it goes. It’s an inordinate amount of work and planning, but we know that you like them. (Well, opinions vary on that, too. You love them, hate them, are intrigued by them, want to discuss them, can’t decide, etc ….. But you DO have an opinion about them.) It keeps things interesting!
We’ll continue to evaluate and listen and figure out the way that makes the most sense for us, while keeping you as happy as possible. We have lots in store for 2011, so if Club Loopy doesn’t trip your trigger, then hopefully something else will.
Enough about Club Loopy. What’s your favorite flower? We have a seven below windchill here today and I’m thinking about flowers. I like Gerber Daisies. I wonder if I can find a vase full of them at this time of year? It’d be a nice thing to have in my office, while the wind howls outside!

With the turnout and devotees that you have for the sock club you all must be doing something right for quite a lot of the people. You cannot please everyone but you sure have a lot that you do please!

The whole point to joining a sock club is for the sock yarn and patterns. I really liked the old way and now have found out that the promise of a guaranteed spot this year (my second year) after purchasing all the the patterns and yarn last year is no longer there unless I purchase 3 months in advance. I now lose my spot because I simply cannot afford to pay for the full 3 months in advance. We no longer have the option to pay month by month. I am really disappointed by this as I was looking forward to this year.

Peruvian Lilies.
I decide on whether to join a sock club by looking at their past offerings. Maybe what you could do is put together galleries of past sock club kits/finished objects. That way you aren’t giving away what is to come but you are giving folks an idea of what they might expect.

Your success is based on how closely you pay attention to your customers’ wants, and you must be doing a great job! Even though this was my second year in the Sock Club, I’m excited to see what’s coming, not only in Club Loopy, but for the rest of the year.
I love columbines and zinnias, and of course, the “flowers with faces” – pansies! Spring can’t come soon enough!

Violets
I’ve always loved seeing violets in the spring because to me that’s a true sign that it’s warm. They’re so delicate and lovely. We had an acre orchard at one of the places I grew up and while the trees were all pretty much done with fruit production (just put out leaves) the ground beneath was always a beautiful palette of new green grass and purple violets.
Not sure I can give you a lot of feedback on the club. I’m so touchy about what mixed colors I like that I tend to avoid them.

I think you should do whatever you want to do with your clubs. LOL That way, you know for sure, someone (you!) will be happy.
When I lived in North Idaho, I had a violet garden. They were really tiny little plants and surprisingly, came in a variety of colors. My favorite was a little apricot one with some speckles on one of the petals. They were some of the early flowers to bloom and they grew near the walkways and paths in the garden. I would love to be sitting on the little stone steps that led up to the vegetable garden admiring my little violets right now. I had yellow, white, several shades of violet and the apricot ones. (just looked up and saw Abigail’s post! good choice Abigail)

I can’t commit to a sock club right now and really have too many socks as is.
But I do have a favorite flower – the daffodil. It should make an appearance in a couple months, just in time for my birthday and announcing beginning of spring and coming warmth of summer. I love how cheery they are as well, whenever I buy a bunch I feel instantly in a better mood.

My favorite flowers are:: violets, lilly of the valley, daisies, , lavender, tuberose (when I can remember to plant them) sweet autumn clematis (used to have one (a vine) – fragrance is awesome), and honeysuckle – love the way they smell too!!!!

Such an unassuming little flower with a fragrance that makes your heart sing:) I look forward to them coming up in my yard all year(can’t get them at the store!) and a lucky few(like my kid’s teachers) will get small vases filled with them as they bloom. I like the big, pastel, ruffly-edged irises, and the multicolor daffodils — once went to a flower show and could NOT believe daffodils came in so many colors. Forsythia is, for me, the harbinger of spring, and I recall my mom loved seeing them, so whenever I see those bright yellow blossoms, it makes me happy.

Sheri — I used to live in Chesterfield. I loved the three months of each season that St.Louis gets. I miss it. Even though it’s only 33 for a high here in Dallas today, I would love to be up with you. Of couse, instead of being at work, I would prefer being home in front of my fireplace knitting away.
Oh, about the flower, my absolute favorite is the peony. I grew them in St. Louis and I grow them here. Have to put a tray of ice over the spot where they grow several times a winter to make them think we really have winter. This winter it won’t be necessary to do that. Just hope a big, bad thunderstorm won’t rip the blooms apart per usual for May.
Best from Dallas!

Love all flowers, but this time of year really like the tulips and daffodils, and the blooming hedges that signal spring has arrived. I really enjoying waliking in the neighborhood and smelling “natures perfume”. It is wonderful. Today don’t really have to worry about “spring” because there is still snow and on the ground and the temperature is in the 20′s and Sheri the wind chill is 17 and just very, very cold.

White, yellow, and purple violets
Glacier lilies

I love Gerber daisies, too! Pink is my favourite. Every once in awhile I pick up a mixed bouquet of flowers at the grocery store. There’s almost always one or two Gerbers in there. They’re just so cheerful. In summer, though, the only flowers I need are the roses that climb over our fence in the back yard. Deep pink, with lots of ruffly petals. Sheri – Part of the sock club issues is attributable to your overall success. My husband just loves it when he gets student evaluation forms, and there are directly conflicting comments. You get the same, just because there are so many different individuals involved, so you are clearly not catering to only one segment.
I’ll add to the mix – a semi-mystery club? Post a somewhat vague description of a package – “### yard skein of fingering yarn in superwash wool, green color family, with sock and hat patterns.” No major extras. Perhaps a bit more flowery than that, and take orders with commitment to buy. Delivery promised for a little ways out, so you can use an indie dyer and they’ll have time to dye for the order. This is kind of like what Sanguine Gryphon does with unlimited orders for a specific color, with slightly delayed delivery so they can dye for the number of requests they get. And it wouldn’t really have to be identical yarn in each kit you send out, adding to the mystery. And of course, the knitting police aren’t going to nab you if you knit something other than the patterns the yarn came with.

Daisies are my favorite, but I prefer Shasta over Gerbera. In a close second are Hydrangeas, Lilacs and Lily-of-the-valley. Those three are the flowers I remember from my “spot” in my parent’s backyard. There was a rose bush too, but strangely I’m not attached to the roses really. And a tiny apple tree I “planted” (I buried an apple core and found out 20 years later that my tree did not grow. My parents bought a tiny one and planted it to fool me! It never did that well, but I got 4 or 5 apples from it over the years) had great blossoms in the spring. And I love Gardenias, but they don’t really grow up here in Wisconsin.

It’s weird me and flowers. I love yellow flowers, if hubby goes to buy me roses i do not want red or any other color but yellow (though i would appreciate his thoughtfulness and never let him know otherwise, lol) but my favorite flower would be the lilac, sadly our tree does not bloom for long. But I adore tigerlillies and black eyed susans….so go figure!

At the moment it is the intense yellow blooms of witchhazel. Because I know when I see them, even surrounded by many inches of snow, that spring will not be far behind. Yes I have one in the backyard that I can see from the kitchen window.

I loved the sock club for the two years I was in it. I just love making socks even though I love to make other things also. I loved the surprises and everything in the kits. I give LOTS of soks away. Like when a friend goes to the hospital, birthdays, happy days, just because days. There is something about hand knitted socks that says “Cozy”.
I also believe in change to make growth happen. You guys are such great folks and i love buying from you.
I love nearly all flowers but right now I am thinking Snow Drops and crocuses. That means Spring cannot be far behind!!
What ever you decide on Clubs it will be perfect. Remember some will complain no matter. I have loved all your kits and yes felt a little evny when I missed one but hey that is just LiFe.
You do a great job!!!

I like Lily of the Valley.
My grandfathers lived with my family when I was young. Every summer day they’d sit outside under this one tree. At the base of the tree grew lily of the valley. My one grandfather said it was his favorite and would sing a little song about them.
I now sing that same song as a lullaby to my daughter.

Hi. My favorite flowers are pink roses, but I adore hot pink azaleas, too! A single rose or three roses, in a bud vase… And, I can’t forget blue pansies, either; those remind me of my lovely late Mom.

Lilacs & Lily of the Valley. Love the flowers, and the smells. My mom had these planted in her yard, and when I see or smell these flowers, it helps me remember her. I also love Morning Glories, I used to help my Grandma plant them every spring. I have a tattoo of Morning Glories on my right ankle in her memory.

I love a simple white daisy…they always make me smile! As far as the club goes, I love the idea of Club loopy w/ a few projects other than socks. I have not been fortunate to get in in the past so I hope to get in this year. I also think you can never have too many bags…especially when they have anything to do with yarn or knitting! That’s my 2-cents worth!

My favorite flowers are hydrangea, but I cannot have them anymore because they are poisonous to kitty cats. Saru-chan would decide it was food and that would be the end of it!

Tulips are the flowers in my dreams, however our climate is too warm to grow them here. I dream of wooden shoes and the socks that can be worn in those shoes! Bring on the sock yarn!
Here in Texas we get the wonderful colors of the wildflowers: Bluebonnets, Black-eyed Susan’s, Indian Paintbrushes, Standing Winecups, and so many others. What a lovely gift every year!

I love Icelandic poppies, hydrangeas, hyacinths, gardenias, passion flowers…I could go on and on and there are so many more in other geographical areas that I haven’t even seen yet. I love winter, though (and detest the heat of summer) so I am content with whatever peeks through.

Peonies, any color. I’m not any good at growing them but occasionally I will get several at a florist stand. I planted a few years ago, just in front of the Rose of Sharons . Well, the Rose of Sharons got taller and overshadowed any light getting to the peonies. But, in my childhood home, my dad could grow the finest of Peonies, so I guess one of his favorite flowers is now mine.

It is cold and snowy here in central Ohio.
I am pleased to participate, if I am lucky enough, in any sock club run by you and Loopy. Here’s to crossed fingers.
My favorite flowers are all the Spring ones, including dandelions. Such an intricate exquisite little bloom, so generous and accommodating for the kidlets. My husband hates them, but I am pleased each year when a few survive the killing season. Violets, peonies, lilacs, iris, daffodils, lily of the valley, I love them all.

Clematis……for a dreary winter day, there’s nothing more beautiful. They’re available right now at the grocery stores and I’m sure at good nurseries. I got one for my MIL and myself on Wednesday at Dierberg’s. They were $11.99 each. Calculate that out for a “daily dose of beauty” and it costs about $.17 cents per day thru the middle of March. WELL WORTH IT!! Have a great day.

Hydrangea’s – I have so many different varieties planted in my yard! I bought a limelight on a whim, it is the BEST! The mopheads are as big as my head! The bush is huge! I planted a second. When they bud, they are green, then turn white, then burgundy in the fall. My niece got married in October by the falls in Ithaca NY. She carried my limelights for her flowers, We also took extra to sit on the tables. Beautiful!

I like what ever is blooming at the time I am out side.
I also like flowers that I can eat. But I only eat the ones that I grow! Viola’s are kind of minty, roses make rose hip tea. So find a tea made with flowers and enjoy flowers in the winter in a different way!
