Come Camp With Us!
Did you ever attend summer camp when you were growing up? I went to camps in Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in my early years and enjoyed all of them. In honor of summertime and camping, we’d like to invite you to Camp Loopy this summer! Here’s what you can expect:
No traveling to get here, no bugs, no tents and no camping fee.
Plus:
- fun monthly project challenges
- a few various sales on “camping” equipment during the summer
- bonuses for completing your camping (knitting) projects
- camp contests, camp songs, camp stories, camp recipes, etc!
So – do you want to be a Camp Loopy Camper this summer? Our first Camping Project – “Campfire Nights” – starts soon!
Here are the specifics for your first project:
- knit between June 15 and July 15
- a two-color project in either a cape, a shawl, or a scarf. (Things that would keep you warm, when sitting around the campfire in the cool of the night. See ideas and links below.)
- you can get 20% off of the yarn for this project by adding “Camp Loopy” to the order notes and letting us know which yarn in that order you will be using for your project. We’ll adjust the cost down when we print your order. (Offer is good on any orders placed 6/3 – 6/10. Make sure that the discount does not take you below the free shipping amount on U.S. orders, if you’re going for free shipping.)
The rewards:
- for each project you finish on time (and upload a photo to the Loopy Gallery within two days of the end-date), we’ll double your Frequent Shopper Credits on that yarn purchase (if purchased 6/3 – 6/10). So if you spend $50 for yarn for the first project, we’ll add another $50 to your FSB total if you turn in a picture of the completed project by 7/17. (International Campers get an extra week, due to the time it takes for your yarn to get to you.) Remember, each time you accumulate $250 in orders here at The Loopy Ewe, you get a $25 Loopy Ewe credit in your account. This finishing bonus helps you to get there even faster!
- You can do one, two or all three of the projects that we’ll introduce this summer. As an added bonus, if you do complete all three (with photos uploaded by the due dates), we’ll send you a free Fall Project in September.** (1 skein of fingering weight yarn, plus a pattern of our choosing. And this isn’t going to be “what yarn can we get rid of” yarn. We don’t do that. We’re sending Wollmeise in these kits!)
(**Please note – you’re welcome to knit the projects using yarn from your stash and camp along with us. However, we’re unable to offer the Double Credits Finishing Bonus or the Free Fall Kit in those instances.)
Here are a few pattern ideas for your Campfire Nights project (although any two-color cape/shrug/shawl/scarf will qualify):
Winter’s Rhythm (I just finished this out of Three Irish Girls Cashmerino Worsted. Photo next week. Another good option – Cascade 220.)
Catkin (fingering weight)
Whippoorwill (fingering weight. I used Madtosh Merino Light.)
Daybreak (fingering weight)
Andrea’s Shawl (sport weight)
Ulmus (fingering weight)
Roma Shawl (fingering weight)
Cladonia (fingering weight)
Skewed Shawl (worsted weight)
Sedna’s Shawl (sport weight)
Or be creative and take one of your favorite one-color shawl/cape/shrug/scarf patterns and turn it into a two-color pattern. Maybe a ruffle in a different color? Or certain middle sections? I saw a couple Pamuya’s done up in two colors at our Spring Fling and they were so beautiful.
As the summer progresses, watch for:
Camp Loopy fun on the blog, special contests, project announcements as we go along, and a few surprises. The second Camping Project – “Hiking in the Mountains” – will run from 7/15 – 8/15, with more details about that in the July 1st blog post.
(Edit: For Q & A’s that have come up since this original post, please see the blog post I did here.)

Good Gravy! You are moving house AND conducting a summer camp? Wonder Woman!
I was planning a two-color shawl anyway because my current “go-out-to-dinner-in-air-conditioning” shawl is a tiny bit short. And the color is wintery.
Well, yay!

Well shoot, Kathy – I don’t want my whole summer to be about moving. Summer Camp is more fun!

I love camping with yarn!

I don’t think I can pass this up! I’ve got a ton of baby knitting to do, but before Baby Shoo gets here, I really want to get some knits in for myself, as well. This might just be my motivation.

I’m glad about the no-bugs and air-conditioned cabins part of Camp Loopy (it’s 90+ degrees in NC). I’ve been knitting a wool cardigan with limited assembly and when it’s done, projects for the rest of summer will either not involve wool or not be draped on my lap with the cat and/or dog.
I don’t know whether I’ll do project 1 or not but will try.
(Since I ordered my yarn yesterday and it’s shipped, can I go back and add “Camp Loopy” note so that if I play it’ll be eligible for double FSB?)

Since my needles are empty and I have nothing else planned (lies, lies, lies….), I think I wavered for ohhhhh, maybe a split second, before declaring “I’m in!” Great idea Sheri, and I’m totally smitten with Loopy under the stars next to a tent.

Oi.. I SO want to try this… but I’ve got two babies to knit blankets before by July… and I haven’t made any scarf or shawl that’s taken me less than 3 months yet!
I do have a two color scarf in mind, but I already bought the yarn (from Loopy even!), but, as I said, I don’t know that I can do two blankets and a scarf in 30 days
I’d have to quit my job!

Oh good heavens – and a suggested Steven West pattern to boot. I was thinking his Clockwork (which pattern I already own), but it might have to be the Daybreak.
As for camping – we knew one couple where he said he’d done all his camping in the Army, and she considered the Holiday Inn to be camping.
diane said,

And I really need to knit a bolero/shrug for DD to replace the inexpensive plain one we bought for her to wear over her prom dress and where the seam is opening (phooey) – so will that fit into one of the planned projects? Can you change the plan if it doesn’t? (Yeah, I know, really pushy, but I figured if I got my request in first…)

sheri said,
June 3, 2011 @ 2:18 pm
Lulynn – you’re welcome to use any yarn for the projects. However, if you want it to count towards the extra rewards (the bonus FSB credit and the free fall kit), then the yarn needs to be purchased during the specified project times each month. That way we can insure that people have knit it during the month-long challenge time, and aren’t submitting photos of projects that they’ve previously completed. (Not that YOU would do that, because I know you! And not that most people would do that. But some people might. Would. Might.)
Kim said,
June 3, 2011 @ 2:31 pm

Sherry said,
June 3, 2011 @ 3:02 pm
Would it count towards the finishing bonus if we use more than two colors? I had never seen the Catkin pattern before and I must make one immediately, but the gold/turquoise picture reminds me of Egyptian motifs, and I think I’d probably want to add some red (carnelian) in addition to gold and lapis colors.
Also, anyone who has made this shawl, would Loopy’s Solid Series be an appropriate yarn? If I’m going to be fussy about color, that’s really the way to go. Since the pattern has no openwork lace that would sproing back from blocking in a high-twist sock yarn, I’m thinking it would work fine.
Mary said,
June 3, 2011 @ 3:03 pm
Does anyone know how much of the Madeline Tosh Light is needed for Whirlpool? I saw that Sheri only used 1 skein of each for the size medium, but I want to make the large size.
Any input would be helpful! Thanks!
PS: I’m in – even though I’m moving 700 miles away on June 17th!!!

This is my ideal for camping! (Where you have indoor plumbing, internet access, and spoiled kitties ready to pile on my lap to “help”.)
I just ordered a couple of skeins so I can make the “Stripe Study Shawl”
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stripe-study-shawl
that I’d been eying for a while. And the due date is perfect: Just in time to take a new shawl with me to the Sock Summit at the end of July so I don’t freeze inside the building.
Thanks for the fun idea, and all the thought and detail you put into it.

My Mother had it in her head that this was what the “rich crowd” did so she sent me every year. Hated, hated, hated it. Camp Loopy is more my style. Toast marshmallows in the microwave for 20-30 seconds on a paper plate till bloated,
(best to put graham cracker under marshmallow before placing in microwave.)
Take out of microwave,
Put chocolate and graham cracker on top and squish top and bottom together
be careful of the hot marshmallow (no burnt, charcoaley marshmallows here!)
Come for a virtual campfire round up on the night projects are due…Have fun!
Count me in…but I just got my order today and MUST use what I have!
Camping with no travel, no bugs, no sweat, no work….ahhhhh. It is priceless!

and it is always good to have a reason for getting more yarn (or maybe use some of the yarn I get from yarn clubs). So count me in.

*And* Winter’s Rythm is the exact type of project I had in mind for my Mom’s Christmas present. I’ve ordered Carey and Enna in Three Irish Girls and am hoping it comes and is more purple-y than burgundy. This timing will have an added bonus as it will be the first time ever I’m not frantically trying to finish my Mom’s gift on December 23rd!

I love Camp, won’t be able to go take classes at Sock Summit this year, though I hope to slide in there for seeing friends and shopping… I think we need lots of Camp Loopy Chatter…
Is it possible to do that, have a page just for Camp chat and postings? Sounds like you’re planning something along those lines for photos at the end of each month, and I guess we can chatter in the Loopy group on Ravelry…

I love the idea of Camp Loopy. This includes everyone who wants to join. I’m definitely in and looking forward to it. I have wanted to do the Catkin for quite some time now. Would really like to do it in wollmeise but that probably won’t happen so I look at the enormous selection at TLE and I know I’ll find just the right thing.
I also want to do the first capelet in two colors. These are perfect for fall in New England. Thank you Sheri for coming up with this idea.

Camp Loopy here I come! (I wish!!!) Down here in Australia we are just beginning to go into winter, (brrrrr…) so snuggling up with a good knit will be heaps of fun! I am planning to do the Cladonia Shawl in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Turquoise and Ms. Taylor. The pictures of the colors weren’t available when I ordered the yarn, so I am flying a bit blind, but I think it is going to be really pretty anyway. I will be dreaming of Camp Loopy in the USA, with happy memories of going to a summer camp, Lutherhaven in Idaho, when I was 9. That was a long time ago! I am so glad I have learned to knit in the meantime!!! Cheers to all my fellow camp-mates! This will be fun!

Great! I have Camp Ava set up on the deck already for the low to no humid nights. I have a hook where I can hang the bug netting. When I designed the library/sunroom for Mom in 97, I included exterior outlets for electricity and telephone. So I have nice lighting complete with bug/yellow and regular lighting and fans. Sources for the computer and I have got Netflixs/Hulu plus the cable hook-up set up on the MAC, along with books to read too! In addition, I created and built the platform to support the ‘double level AeroBed. Swimming pool already cranked up and ready to go, the neighbors said have at it!
I am all set to enjoy the great outdoors!
So count me in! This is going to be way too much fun!
All I have to do now is make the great decision of what pattern and which fibers to choose!

Sheri, after reading that you enjoy a no-bug version of camping, I have to warn you about the moths here in the Front Range. Every late May/early June, moths come to this area for a few weeks in droves. They’re called miller moths and during the day they hide in any dark, tight space they can find. Unfortunately this includes our screen doors. We’ve been bombarded with moths when we open the door to get the mail or to cool off the house with fresh air. The good news is that they won’t get into wool or pantry supplies. Supposedly the moth population this year is lower than normal, but this is my first experience with them and they seem quite plentiful to me. I’ve been chasing them around with the vacuum hose. Now that we know where they like to hide, we’ve had fewer get into the house. I still can’t wait until they’re gone, though.

I just surfed in from Facebook. What a great idea! I started the Scalene Scarf/Shawl by Carina Spenser with Malabrigo sock yarn in a teal/brown that I had in my stash. I love all the suggestions for the two-colorway shawls and can’t wait to try them all! I missed this discount and of course I can always use to add to my stash. Can’t wait to get in on the next Camp Loopy project. In the meantime, I’m going to be knitting right along with July 15th in my sites for completion.

My yarn still isn’t here! I suspect it’s being held up by the volcanic eruptions which are grounding most planes for the South Island of New Zealand. I don’t think NZ Post has any idea just how stressful it is not having yarnie mail!

The yarn I wanted came in after the order date but the colors were so worth it. I can still join, right??? Thanks for doing this Sheri! I needed just a littel nudge to knit this shawl and move the other projects to the side for the moment.

I’m a bit late to the game but I’m thinking I need to join this. There’s some lovely suggestions and now I think I need to scour some yarn choices.

I came in this late and just ordered my yarn today but that’s okay. I will just have to knit like crazy when my yarn comes. I signed up in a cabin on Ravelry, do I need to do anything further to sign up for camp?

Oh, what fun!! I could not wait to see what was up for the second project. I just placed the order for my yarn (plus a few more goodies, just because!). I ran through the patterns that I have on hand and decided that I am going to do Bella’s Mittens by Marielle Henault. I have been drooling over that chunky cable since last year. And here is the perfect incentive to get them done! Now, all I have to do is wait for my yarn and July 15th. Oh, and I still need to finish my Daybreak… Thanks so much, Sheri! This was such a lovely idea!
