It was a Dark and Stormy Night
We’re having a campfire and everyone is invited. Come out out of your cabins and tents and join us. Speaking of cabins, did you know that Claudia Hand Painted has a colorway called “Cabin Fever“?
She also has “Boot Camp“:
And “Campfire“:
Which brings us back to the point of today’s blog. Part of camping is sitting around the fire, telling stories, right? So let’s tell a story about Loopy. I’ll start, and anyone who would like to can add one sentence – just one sentence – in the comments below to continue the story. Once the comments start, you need to add your sentence so that it continues the story from the comment above yours. (I realize this might be problematic if you have never left a comment on this blog. Those comments go into a queue for approval, which will make them show up in the right order, but at a later time. But come to think of it, that might add a few interesting twists to the story!)
Next week, I’ll randomly draw a comment to win two skeins of Claudia Hand Painted in your color choice. So let the story begin:
It was a beautiful afternoon (although the forecast was for storms that night.) Loopy had a long list of things to-do, and a house full of people to entertain, but all he really wanted to do was to sit down and work on his Camp Loopy project. He grabbed his project bag and snuck off to hide in the attic for some knitting time. Loopy opened the two attic windows for a nice breeze and settled down to knit. He was in the middle of a long row of (K2tog, YO’s), when he heard a loud crash from the floor below.
(Your turn. Keep it going!)

Barbara-Kay said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:31 am
Loopy carefully ended on a K2tog, put his knitting in his bag, then rushed downstairs to see what was the matter.
Chris said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:36 am
What Loopy saw was the UPS delivery man — he had tripped over the latest shipment of yarns and was sprawled amongst hundreds of skeins of the softest yarns Loopy had ever seen!
Melissa (Meliabella) said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:38 am
Once he reached the bottom of the attic steps he was met by his Aunt Thema from Baton Rouge.
Linda said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:39 am
My gosh, young man, what have you done to my lovely yarn??
Sandy said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:41 am
Aunt Thelma, took one look at the poor UPS man and said, “Loopy – really, you must reign in this obsession with yarn!”
Linda L said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:43 am
And just who do you expect to fix this mess?
cindy said,
June 22, 2011 @ 8:43 am
Loopy wondered how Aunt Thema had managed to escape from prison, last he’d heard she’d been doing time for fleecing unsuspecting sheep, but here she was and dressed quite natty.

June 22, 2011 @ 8:44 am
“But I can’t, it’s all soooo pretty, whined Loopy.
Lani said,

Then Aunt Thelma took a startled look at the yarn and slowly bent over to pick up a skein.
Arlene said,

At that point, the UPS man interupted with “Can you please sign for these packages so I can get out of here?”
Robin said,
June 22, 2011 @ 9:08 am
The UPS man was about to leave, when he was struck with the beauty of all the yarn. “You know, I’ve got a full delivery schedule, but could I come sometime and learn how to knit?”
Joyce said,
June 22, 2011 @ 9:10 am
Loopy and Aunt Thelma both said at once, “Of course you can. We’d love to teach you”.
Ellen said,
June 22, 2011 @ 9:16 am
Aunt Thelma and Loopy then began to think about how to organize their yarn – by the pretty colors, maybe? All lined up in the rafters? Or by weight? Then the colors would be random. They both decided to have a cup of coffee and ponder the possibilities.
janine said,
June 22, 2011 @ 9:23 am
But the colors were too intoxicating – “I must start something new RIGHT NOW!”
Susan K. said,

MelissaN said,

Janet said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:06 am
Suddenly while the Camp Loopies are diving thru the yarn, a silvery grey wolf slips thru the door and graps Loopy. Before anyone realizes what has happened, the wolf heads for the deep dark woods with Loopy in tow!
Lisa said,

John, the UPS guy, sat down to begin his lesson. He dilligently worked in garter stitch, making very certain not to drop a stitch. All of a sudden — they heard a screech from the back of the house……
Diane said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:14 am
The screech was the wolf! Clever Loopy had always carried a set of DPNs for just such knitting or other emergencies and poked the wolf in his nether regions, and escaped back to the cabin to help teach the UPS guy how to knit.
Diane said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:15 am

After Loopy had vanished from the scene being dragged off by the wolf, some of the campers noticed that John, the UPS guy, had a tinge of red fabric peeking out from under his cap.
Barbara said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:30 am
He froze in his fleece, and let a sharp baaa, and dropping a stitch. He listened, trying not to breathe and thereby give away his location.
Loopy gentle set down knitting, getting ever so quietly, using it under his hooves to muffle any sound. He slowly, ever so slowly, crept toward the window. Peeking over the window sill, careful not to let his snowy white fur catch the light from the full moon, he looked down to the yard between the cabin on the lake.
There he saw…..

He looked up and Aunt Thelma poured out some margaritas. That was against company policy too but….
Maria said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:48 am
…one little sip wouldn’t hurt! His stitches were far too tight on the needles, and maybe this would help relax him.
Marilee said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:49 am
“Oh well,” said the UPS man. “I’m taking knitting lessons from a sheep and a batty old lady. Perhaps it’s time to set my policies aside and live a little.”
Debbie said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:51 am
Shrily and the elves coming in to dock in a big boat! Loopy was so happy to see them coming for they might help with all the yarn -plus the UPS man was getting stranger by the second. There was something not right here and they couldn’t figure out what it was or what to do next.
Erin said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:54 am
The matter having been decided, Aunt Thelma helped John cast on a bright red scarf.
Sarah said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:58 am
As the margaritas flowed, so did the stitches from everyone’s needles.
kitrin said,
June 22, 2011 @ 10:59 am
Aunt Thelma showed John the basic knit stitches and he took right off, being a natural at knitting as it turned out. He soon tired of scarf knitting and wondered what else he could knit that would challenge his new found skills.
Tamara said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:02 am
John settled into his seat and looked down at his project only to realise that he was on the wrong row and thanks to the recent commotion he had no clue what to do next. What was that Aunt Thelma mentioned about life lines and knitting?
Christine said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:05 am
and then they heard it, the thump from the attic …
Denise Russart said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:11 am
Loopy was prepared to head to the attic, knitting needles held out in front as a sword, followed by a few intrepid campers armed with scissors, needles and blocking wires to defend themselves, when all of a sudden, out of the corner of his eye he saw flames out the window — something was on fire!
Susan Harbaugh said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:11 am
Aunt Thelma said,”Everyone keep knitting! I’ll go investigage!” Aunt Thelma put her knitting in her project bag, and ever so slowly crept up the attic stairs. That’s when she saw IT!
Lorraine said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:18 am
It was the UPS van! The wolf (with his nether regions still smarting from the DPN’s) had come back, and dosed the van with petrol. Howling with laughter, (sorry), he ran away……
Seanna Lea said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:28 am
Loopy took his knitting needles and a monstrously large ball of wool and knit garter stitch as fast as he could. The damp wool draped out of the window and landed on the UPS truck below, smothering the flames without even a hint of damage to the precious fibers. “I knew I kept that skein of Lopi around for a reason!”
Jeanne said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:31 am
All of the Camp Loopies grabbed their margaritas to rush out and put out the fire in the UPS van.

With the fire properly “out”, Aunt Thelma was very interested in the magic ball of yarn that Loopy had used. “I’ve never seen that yarn before! Is it new??” she asked…”hmmm, magic yarn–it’s beautiful! What else can you do with it?”
Mary Beth said,

bonny said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:44 am
Lightning flashed in the distance, as the rumble of thunder grew ominously louder as the storm approached. “It looks like we might get soaked on our way to get more somemore ingredients,” said Loopy to Aunt Thelma. “I’ll go back and get our umbrellas.”
CarolP said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:46 am
The van was still on fire, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of everyone at Camp Loopy.
Aunt Thelma passed more marshmallows around and everyone sat around the camp fire van, ate smore’s and knitted on their projects. They began to sing to the click~ clack of their needles, when all of sudden the wolf appeared.
karen w said,
June 22, 2011 @ 11:55 am
Was it a wolf or was it Red Riding Hood because I’m pretty sure that Red Riding Hood would pick up a set of needles and get to work on something pretty, like a 2-colored scarf or shawl.
Mary said,
June 22, 2011 @ 12:03 pm
The Big Bad Wolf was jealous of Little Red Riding Hood’s new hat.
Patty B said,
June 22, 2011 @ 12:12 pm
Wherever there are wolves there are hunky lumberjacks and so the campers met several burly men who wanted to knit fairisle sweaters for their cousins who fished.
Lynn said,
June 22, 2011 @ 12:12 pm
As the wolf approached, the wind suddenly started howling like a freight train until Loopy and all the campers were picked up by the newly spawned tornado, swirling and twirling through the air with their rainbow of yarn, until they landed softly in a magical land of merino trees, alpaca shrubs, and silk flowers… (their rogue skeins breaking their fall, of course).
Debby G. said,
June 22, 2011 @ 12:18 pm
Aunt Thelma tole the Big Bad Wolf not to be jealous and that he too could have a new hat like Little Red Riding Hood’s….if he only learned to knit.

He decided one crash wasn’t urgent enough to stop what he was doing, but certainly merited a lifeline, so he knit the next row, adding the lifeline as he went…and waited. The silence made the wool on the back of his neck tingle.
Marseille said,

As the campers frolicked in the magical land, they realized they had *tons* of fiber…..but not enough needles for all of the new yarn! And spindles for the fiber on the trees and shrubs!

enidb said,

Robi V said,
June 22, 2011 @ 1:30 pm
The woman with the large box put it down so all the campers, Loopy, Aunt Thelma and John the UPS man could get all they needed for their treasure hunt while the woman read from the list what all their treasures would be.

But Loopy didn’t know how to use a compass very well, but he did know that the top of the map should be north, so he looked at the compass and turned around until he was facing north, and then sat the map down on the ground next to the compass and tried to figure out where on the map they were currently located.
Sarah Shoo said,

Karen said,

Meanwhile Loopy realized that it was even harder to undo a knot when you are so small the yarn is the thickness of your own body. “Well, that was a dumb idea,” he said. He turned over the bottle in his hand–it had at least had the decency to shrink with him — and saw a label on the back, in very small print (even smaller now that it had shrunk), reading: “Hand Wash Cold Only. Lay Flat To Dry”.
Barb in MA said,

He was hoping to learn how to knit socks, and hoped the Elves and Loopy and all the campers could help him. He heard giggling from the direction of Cabin 3, and found several campers eating the rest of the cupcakes.

As he entered the cabin he encountered a sheep, but it wasn’t Loopy. Indeed it was so different from Loopy as to be another species altogether. It was the infamous Delores Van Hoofen. She gave him a well practiced onceover. “Is that a sock in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?”, she asked while sizing him up. Clearly there was going to be trouble.
