Fall Fourth Quarter Challenge!
Ok – so you all made me laugh with your comments on Monday’s blog. Thanks for proving that you know how to comment on a Monday blog.
I just wasn’t sure. (And not that I’m complaining. I do appreciate the fact that you read the blog and then click over and SHOP on Mondays!) Susan from Colorado has won a skein of Kauni and I’ve emailed her to see which color she’d like.
Today, however, we have more important things to discuss. Like the Fourth Quarter Challenge! I thought long and hard about what to do for this quarter. I know that so many of you just finished up with Camp Loopy, where we were pretty specific about what you should knit. (That was fun!) So with this challenge, it’s all about the yarn. You can knit anything you’d like, as long as it uses at least one full skein of Madelinetosh, in any of the Tosh yarn bases that we carry at The Loopy Ewe (Sock, Merino Light, Vintage, Sport, DK and Pashmina). You can knit up more than one skein in your project, but not any less than a full skein. Think sweaters, gloves, mittens, vests, shawls, socks, capelets, scarves, cowls and hats. This might be a great time to work on a holiday gift.
The rest of the specifics:
- Your project must be completed and photos uploaded to the Fourth Quarter Challenge Photo Gallery at The Loopy Ewe by Wednesday, January 4th.
- If you need to buy yarn for your project, you can get it at 20% off between today and next Wednesday, October 5th. (You must specify in your order notes, which yarn you are using for your project. We will then run the discount on our end, before shipping it out. Discount is limited to one project’s worth of yarn, ordered in one order. Make sure you count your yardage carefully and order enough. Remember, only Madelinetosh yarn is eligible for this challenge.)
- If you’re in the U.S. and going for free shipping (orders above $75), be careful that the discount won’t take you below the $75 or the system will add the regular $5.95 shipping back in to your order.
- All entries finished on time will be eligible for prizes (both randomly drawn and voted on).
- If you bought your project yarn between 9/28 and 10/5 (and if you complete your project and upload the photo by the deadline), we’ll double the FSB points for the yarn you used. Quite a few of you earned some extra $25 bonuses this summer by getting your FSB points doubled for the yarn you used for Camp Loopy!
- We do not have any more Madelinetosh yarn arriving before 10/5, but we do have a lot of Sock, Merino Light, Pashmina and Sport currently in stock for you. Less of the DK and Vintage.
- If you want to use yarn in your stash, just make sure that it’s one of the Madelinetosh bases listed above. You’ll still be eligible for the prizes at the end, but not the double FSB credits.
Now might be a great time to do a bigger project, due to the discount, the 3 month knitting time frame, and the opportunity to earn double FSB points on it if you finish in time.
Need some ideas? Check out all three photo galleries from Camp Loopy. (One, Two, Three.) I can’t think of anything more motivating than your own photos from Camp this summer. You all did some awesome projects, and in one month’s time, no less! Three months will be a piece of cake.
So …. who’s in and what’re you going to make?

How fortuitous for me! I have some Madelinetosh in my cart right now for a new sweater project. Clearly, this is a sign that I had better snatch it up and get the sweater knit.

Oooh, I’m in I think. I have a sweaters worth of Madelinetosh I bought from you a while back that I would really like to turn into the sweater I bought it for LOL. So I think I might try that. Failing that, maybe I will use up one of the skeins of madelinetosh sock I have here. Or maybe I will just go browse to see what there is…. LOL

I’m thinking Whippoorwill or Daybreak with Mansfield Garden Party & Green with Envy because I do not use a full skein for a pair of socks.

Does the project have to have Only the Madelinetosh yarn? I want to knit the Vintage held together with a strand of kid mohair/silk for instance. Also, this does not have to be an original pattern, right? I am not really a designer.

I think I’m in. I have 4 skeins (or 3, I’d have to check) marinating in my stash that I got this summer. Not eligible for FSB that way, but I’ve had Goodale in mind for that yarn for a while!

This challenge sounds like fun. I am planning on knitting either Different Lines or Stripe Study (again!) with MT Pashmina in Briar and Antler. I already had Briar in my cart…so this worked out nicely! =D I also got some more Chiaogoo needles. They are AMAZING. We need more in stock!

Outstanding! I have a bunch of Moorland in, I think, Vintage (and I am 90% certain I bought it right here at TLE!) that I’ve already set aside to make a cardigan/shrug-ish garment. It’s a pattern that I purchased at my OC LYS that calls for Madtosh specifically.
Now, the challenge will be to attempt this along with Christmas knitting, and yet another baby blanket!

This must be fate. I received my lovely madelinetosh pashmina in Magnolia Leaf from the Loopy Ewe just today. I’m going to make a shawl, and I hope I can put it in my gift drawer, but I may just wear it!

Oh Sheri, when will I ever clear out the WIPs? On the other hand, I’ve promised myself lots of light/bright socks this fall/winter . . . and you can never have too many socks . . . or sock yarn . . . and I do have 2.25 Blackthorns coming that will need warming up . . .
Yep, I’m in — Tosh sock in Kelp for Wendy Johnson Diamond Lace socks from her new book.

My knitting group Secret Santa is going to benefit from this! I had decided it was a little too expensive to do her shawl in Tosh. Now her Age of Brass and Steam is going to be gorgeous in Merino Light Baltic.

man! i should’ve waited to place my TLE order from last week. I just bought a bunch of madtosh merino light for 3 different 2-colored shawl projects. (Kleio, My Wish & Whippoorwill). haha oh well… you can’t have too much, so I placed another order. I’m planning to knit Goodale, or another lightweight cardi that I’ve already forgotten the name of, out of some Pashmina!! Looking forward to it!

Sheri, I love the Citron shawl you made from the Kauni – looks like a wonderful warm and solid cold weather wrap. Do you mind sharing the final shawl dimensions? You are also an enabler (smile) – 20% off a great sweater or maybe a Citron shawl plus double points is a big temptation. I’m also thinking of getting some Hand Maiden Swiss Silk to make one of Wendy Johnson’s lace tunics. They are beautiful patterns!
Thanks as always for a great shop – I always enjoy spending time at The Loopy Ewe (even if I’ve never been to St. Louis :>)

The challenge is very tempting but I have a trip planned for Feb where I am going to a warm climet so have a couple of project lined up using cotton – I love the Tosh line and would have normally taken this challange up but it sort of does not fit into what I am currently working on or planning to work on over the next few weeks ;(

I wasn’t going to make ANYTHING, what with the socks I need to finish and the reading I’m behind on and NaNoWriMo coming up and all, but BFF Sarah starts talking, and there we go. So now I’m probably going to make a Nessie in a color to match my Camp mittens. Hmm, should probably should get the hat going to match the mittens before I start the scarf….

I have got a 2010 Advent Scarf on the needles at the moment in colors I am not so happy about, so I think I might have a rethink on that pattern with some Madelinetosh yarn! And who knows… some clever person might think up a 2011 Advent Scarf to do anyway! Thanks for the challenge… I have been working on my Advent Scarf between the Camp Loopy projects and all the Nanna Knits I have done for the Australian winter, so it still could take me until January to do another one! I’m in. This will be my first Challenge at Loopy. I am planning on doing the Triinu Shawl by Nancy Bush and a matching pair of gloves for myself. Bought 2 skeins of Mare in the Tosh Light. Hopefully I will get the gloves made. I have never knit gloves before and will have to find a pattern that is easy. Any suggestions out there?

I’m in. I decided I wanted to make something fun – there’s already multiple scarves inthe works, I recently did a couple shawls, and I’ve got a sweater I’m working on now. So I’ll be making Fiona’s top http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fionas-top for the nearly 2 yr old daughter of a friend. It’s just adorable – so the yarn is ordered for the main part of it and I just have to look through my loopy stash for an accent color to go with it.

I am excited about the Fourth Quarter Challenge. I have a Stephen West shawl pattern in mind. It uses three skeins of Madeline Tosh for a total of 790 yds but you do not use a full skein of any color. Does this pattern meet the requirements of the challenge?

I designed a collar for over my plain shirts to dress them up a bit. It has a double-strand cabled neckband open at the front, with the body of it extending a little over my shoulders. The body is also cabled, with raglan increases, and buttons closed in the front. Finished the band, working down the body. Bought two skeins, looks like both will be fully used up.
Loving working with this yarn. It is my first Tosh experience :O)

Whew, made it into the photo album in time. Granted it is pending; but I did get the pic into Loopy on time. Finished mine at 1:00 a.m. on 01/04. Ran out of yarn, Loopy was out of it, finally found some and it was delivered on the 3rd, up all nighter.
Anyway, happy to have been able to join in and have fun designing it as I went along.
Thank you Sherri & elves, both MO & CO
