Malabrigo, Cascade, and a CONTEST!
It has been a busy day (getting all of your Second Quarter Challenge orders out), so this is coming to you a little late in the day. When we pack up your orders, we always have fun talking about what you might be making (and hoping that you get it done so that you’ll submit a photo for us to see!) We love being a part of your shopping here, from me checking out your selections when I write on your orders, to the Elves pulling them and packing them up carefully. Thanks for letting us be your personal shoppers as we walk around the shop, filling up the order bin for you. We get to enjoy all of your yarn vicariously and then send it on its way to your house!
Tomorrow we’ll be doing more shopping for you, because we just put up some beautiful things on the website for tonight’s Monday Update.
- Malabrigo Worsted – 28 colors to choose from for sweaters, vests, hats and scarves. (Shown above in Nostalgia.)
- Malabrigo Rios – 5 colors are in – more on the way soon.
- Malabrigo Arroyo – everything re-stocked.
- Malabrigo Lace – 30 colors for your summerweight shawls and wraps.
- Cascade 220 – the wall is filled up again. I love it when the 220 Wall is full.
- Cascade Heritage Sock – fingering weight, great for socks!
- Cascade Heritage Silk – fingering weight, great for shawls (with that extra silk in there.)
- Della Q Bags – re-stocked.
- Knitter’s Pride Interchangeable Tips – sizes 4-13, to go with the cords we have up.
- Knitter’s Pride Cable Needles – 3 to a set.
- Mary Hadley Loopy Ewe Yarn Bowls – remember, these have to ship separately so that we can pack them well. We’re happy to have these back in stock!
- Mary Hadley Loopy Ewe Flared Mugs – ditto. They must ship on their own, and they’re as cute as ever.
- Perfect Notions Cases – for your stitchmarkers, darning needles, little stitch counters, etc. I keep one in each knitting bag.
- And at the end of last week (in time for our Cotton Challenge), we added in:
- Namaste Bags – Messenger and Boardwalk (backpack) bags, and Buddy Cases
- Knitter’s Pride Needles – re-stocked
- Stonehedge Fiber’s Shepherd Wool Worsted - re-stocked (and shown here in Misty Blue.)
You’d think that all of those updates and re-stocks would last us a good long while, wouldn’t you? But the back stock room is filled up again with new boxes that arrived today, which we’ll work on for next Monday. Aren’t Mondays fun??
Now for the contest. The weather is getting warmer here and spring and summer are just around the corner. It makes me wonder – do you have a favorite season for knitting? Fall, when you’re thinking of holiday gifts? Winter, when it’s too cold outside to do anything else? Spring, when you’re dreaming of lightweight shawls? Summer, when it’s too hot and you are thinking about cool-weather wear? Or do you knit year-round pretty much the same amount? I knit the same amount year round, in all seasons. I can’t imagine cutting back! Leave your answer below and we’ll draw for $25 Loopy Ewe Gift Certificates next week.

I really love knitting all year, especially if the project is felted. A bin of Cascade 220 in spring colors is calling my name but the felting will have to wait until I’ve recovered from surgery.
Also, many thanks to Sheri and the Elves at TLE for always being wonderful and helpful! I know we keep you guys busy but you do such a good job handling everything.

So much yummy yarn, so little time. No, quite honestly, knitting calms me, so I pretty much knit year-round. Recently I promised a friend I’d help her embroider some quilt squares. I did a lot of embroidery when I was younger, and working with those threads just aren’t my cup of tea anymore. I spent 43 days embroidering my brains out trying to get my part of the project done. Every now and then, when my husband could sense that I was just this side of going crazy, he’d gently suggest that I put the hoop and floss down and reach for the knitting needles. So I followed his advice time and time again, and I was realy comforted by my yarn. It gave me a renewed appreciation for knitting. I got all the embroidery blocks done in record time and the work was beautiful, I must say, but no more, thank you. It’s just me and my knitting needles for now, and my yarn, of course.

I knit the most in the winter. Oregon has a lot of short, gray, gloomy, rainy days in the winter, perfect for curling up with a cat, a good movie or tv show, and my knitting.

Honestly, I think my knitting is more dictated by my work schedule and how much free time I have. It’s not a season, but the best time to knit is while in transit as a passenger, because you can space out, relax, and not feel guilty!

Knitting is the true sport for all seasons. But the huge availability of the non-wool/non winter yarns that we take for granted was not always the case, as in childhood many of us probably thought ‘knitting, oh that’s for scarves, mittens, sweaters, COLD days.’ now we know: knitting is always!

While I do knit year round, the BEST time is in the winter. The days are short and there is something comforting about the wool slipping through your fingers and thinking about how the garment you are making will keep the recipient warm and snuggly. I especially love to knit by the fire – with a steaming mug of cocoa or tea. Those times make me VERY happy!

I knit year round. What does change is the type of project I make.
Sweaters in the winter, socks in the spring, lace in the summer, and cables in the fall.
I’m not sure how that came about, but like most things with knitting it feels very natural to do it that way.

I have a sofa and fan outside on the patio and that’s my favorite place to knit.

Oh I knit daily! Someone earlier said a day without knitting just feels wrong and I agree. Although on occasion there are “those days”. I bore of a single project easily, even if it is an entertaining knit. So I have a bag that keeps my current projects all together in one spot. There are 6 of them. Each bag has a card with a number on it and I use that to remember which project is next. I work on a project to a transistion point and then grab the next project out of the bag. When I finish a project, another one takes its place. Currently I have two pairs of socks, a pair of mittens, a double-knit belt to match a sweater, a lavendar silk top, and a beaded lace shawl in active stages of completion. Of course there is a line up of projects waiting their turn to jump into the rotation…including the 2nd quarter challenge project!!!

I knit year-round but knit with different fibers and weights according to seasons and climate. In the Fall I start thinking of the cooler climate in New England and also the coming of Christmas. I start with my larger pieces like blankets, sweaters and then on to cowls, scarves, gloves, mittens, and heavier socks. After the holidays I plan a few heavier weight smaller projects just for fun. My husband and I usually spend some time out of the New England winters and for that I bring lighter weight projects that interest me at the time. Sprintg always brings me to cotton and silk and lovely open work of shawls and lovely scarves. Summer is my sock knnitting time. I don’t want a heavy bundle of wool sitting on my lap in the summer heat when I’m outside. However, I do keep something going inside where its air conditioned. I try to never stop knitting.

Not only do I knit all year round, I also spin all year round. I have to say, though, when it comes to spinning, that I really enjoy spinning in the winter, when the wood stove is all fired up, the cats are snoozing right in front of it, and my wheel is going ’round and ’round as I spin next to the stove, along with one of my friends (she brings her wheel and we sit, spin and yak). I just learned how to use a drop spindle and I’m thinking that will enable me to spin this summer outdoors!

I pretty much knit every evening all year round. I have a stash of yarn (which only seems to get bigger, never smaller, because Sheri keeps Loopy Ewe supplied with such great yarns) and a stash of completed projects (which is handy anytime I need a unique and personal gift for someone).

Unless I’m sick, I knit everyday all year round. My preference is knitting lace, and based on the weather, I knit from lace weight to worsted weight. Since one person doesn’t need that much lace, I give my shawls to friends/family, particularly those facing health issues. I get a lot of knitting done during the NFL football season because my hubby and I are huge fans and watch football all day on Sundays – knitting is perfect for this activity, so my production is very high during the season.

Hi Sheri,
I knit year round and will stay up way too late to ensure I get it fitted into our busy household schedule, but I actually get my most knitting completed and time to indulge in it in the full on heat of summer when it’s school holidays and too hot to do anything so I have movie marathon days with my children, we get to spend time together indoors out of the burning sun (over 40 celcius) and I can knit guilt free as it is too hot to be doing anything else :0) These days are magical, everyone enjoying something together even hubster if it isn’t a workday and finishing off with a fish and chip carpet picnic (we spread a rug on the floor and eat in the lounge as a treat) which of course I don’t have to cook= perfect knitting time :0)
Much love, Mel in Australia where it is getting cold and I have to put on hat, jumper and mittens for the walk to school in the morning :0)

Knitting is its own season for me and it lasts year round!:-). I knit at least a few rows everyday and as many rows as I can most days! Knitting is my daily therapy and mode to relaxation! The seasons of nature simply dictate the fiber and projects I choose. As the weather warms I move to cotton and silk blends. As the weather cools I get the itch for wool, alpaca and cozy sweaters and socks! Knitting is so very engaging of all my seasons and senses.

Since I retired-have started knitting. Have now been retired five years and hours of knitting have increased to ALMOST all day every day. (except for those days when I shop for MORE YARN )! RIght now it is ruffled scarves to sell (when will it all be over). So have multiple projects waiting to do for myself, and am going to teach my 16 year old niece to knit this Summer. For her BD in March-gave her two balls of Rowan Big Wool in pink-Debbie Stollers Stitch and Bitch and a set of 11 needles. So,thankfully, there is not going to be a decrease in knitting hours over the Summer and there are no rules here on weight of yarn.Yeah!!!!!

I love to knit year round, in Spring as it warms up sitting on the deck smelling the plum & apple blossoms popping out in the yard. Watching the birds, listening to the frogs. Camera nearby to catch those special shots of nature coming back to life.
In Summer the lilacs bloom, trees are filled with fruit, nests are being built…some using the wee scraps of yarn that escape the safe place I put them before going inside. Planning & beginning my gifts for the holidasys. Again the camera by my side.
Come Autumn, as the leaves start to turn, the crispness in the air. Those last minute opportunities to sit out there & just enjoy the beauty before putting things away for winter. Putting finishing details on gifts & pictures, alike.
Finally in Winter, moved inside. Lighting the wood furnace, adding that wonderful scent to the air. The snow moves in, making all under a blanket of white, the perfect backdrop not only for nature pics; but to lay out my projects for display.
I love ALL the holidays for working with beautiful yarns, indeed!!

I really got back into knitting about a year ago, taught myself two at a time toe up socks and made several pairs for myself, made my mom a gorgeous bulky afghan, a shawl for myself, and am knitting my son some “huggy” socks. I only use nice yarn now and when I’ve been really busy, my younger daughter says “you haven’t had time to knit this weekend” . . . I saw a T-shirt that said “I knit so I don’t kill people” – I particularly thought that this was really why I knit. I have withdrawal if I don’t knit. No seasons for me.

I have four favorite knitting seasons.
Winter with a beeswax candle lit and a glass of wine.
Spring with fresh squeezed orang juice and a boquet of bulb flowers ont he table.
Summer with lemonade and my hanging garden on the porch – knitting socks because they don’t make me hotter.
Fall with hot apple cider or brandy and applesauce cooking in the oven,

When I first read your question I was like I knit the same things year round how could I pick a favorite time of year. But then I got to pondering. Possibly spring might be my favorite. It’s just cool enough that if I’m racing to finish a big heavy winteresque project I can talk it outside and not broil while knitting. At the same time if I’m working a light anti-air conditioner shawl for summer I won’t freeze. Plus it’s so nice to be outside thinking about the garden and what I want to plant where and future knitting of course.

The projects may change with the seasons – small portable ones like socks & afghan squares in the summer, heavier afghans and cozy shawls in winter – but I’m definitely a year-round knitter. The only time I don’t squeeze in at least a row or two is when I’m majorly sick, but only because I know I’d mess it up & have to fix it all once I’m feeling better.
emmy said,

I knit when it is needed: it is a pleasurable manual encouragement to my systems:
tactile, rhythmic movement, that also produces something tangible – mostly socks – and is fun to look at because of the colours. It brings me in a neutral modus.
Autumn and winter are more favourable times to knit.
Warm wishes,
emmy.

I’ve only been knitting for just over a full year now, but I noticed that my knitting took a nose dive during last summer. I picked up again around fall and have been doing it intensely since. Maybe for me, it’s not a function of temperature that affects my knitting – rather it’s based on the condition of my car & gas prices. If it’s unreliable (like it’s been since last fall) I’m more often at home and need to past the time (hence the intense bouts of knitting). So maybe I should instead of spending money on fixing my car, I’ll just buy more yarn
.

Knitting spans all the seasons. I knit in the spring during the planting and the lengthening days, and summer sitting out on the deck, and fall during football games (what better time to knit!) and in winter, when everything is winding down, the days are short and it’s so comforting to be inside. Knitting helps me wait patiently for whatever is going to happen next, through all the seasons throughout the year.

I knit year ’round, but the mojo comes and goes. I think it just depends on whether or not I’m really into the project(s). I have a hard time balancing reading with knitting, so when one is strong, the other is usually lagging a bit. If I’m doing both, I’m probably not getting much exercise, which isn’t good!

Fall is my favorite season for everything, including knitting.

I knit year-round. Here in the deep South we live in air-conditioning at 72, and heating at 70. Since I’m basically an indoor gal, the seasons never change in my knitting chair.

I knit mostly in the fall and winter. During the summer I take my spinning wheel “out and about” to do demonstrations (and to build up a yarn stash for the fall).

I knit the same amount, all year round. If there is a day I do not knit, I just don’t feel right! While traveling, I let my partner drive and I knit. There are times I have to ask him not to talk to me, so I can count stitches!

I knit year round. If I had time then I think my favourite season for it would be fall, but that’s also the busiest season at work so I don’t get as much done as I’d like to.

I knit all year round.Today I will knit at my son’s soccer match and when we watch the family movie tonight.I write out on a piece of paper the numbered rows and cross them off as I finish each row. Then I can just do many things at a time.I am working on reducing my stash.

I knit the same all year round. I like to do at least one big project a year, with smaller items throughout the year. I just finished up a Narnia Shawl, and for my big project, have the sleeves left on a Hallett’s Ledge. Next up in my list is a skirt, cardigan, and pair of socks. Also planning a cowl for my mom for Christmas.

My favorite knitting season(s) is Winter and Fall, because nothing makes me happier then staying inside with a hot drink and knitting under a blanket all day long.

Weather is never a reason to stop knitting, only sleeping and eating ;-}

All knitting…all the time. Everyday, unless I’m under the weather and too sick to knit. (which is hardly every, thankfully)

Winter, Spring,Summer or Fall, those needles seem always to call and I will be there, yes I will.

I’m a year-round knitter. I’m super-fidgety and need something to keep my hands busy!

Every season has its knits, and any day without knitting is somehow wrong. That said, I’m in SC, so winter is my favorite. It’s not too cold to do anything else… it’s just the only season that does not feel like we’re living outside hell’s screen door.

I knit all year ’round, but I think Christmas knitting is fun because you end up giving more things at once

Knitting used to be a fall/winter sport for me. I’d spend late spring and summer using my creative energy working in the yard and quilting (my sewing room is the coolest room in the house). But, my lovely Bernina sewing machine and the mountains of fabric in my stash have been sitting pretty much neglected for the last year and a half. Every spare minute is now spent comfortably plopped in my chair knitting. I knit before I go to work, think about the project I’m working on while I’m at work and get right back to it when I get home. Days off are now spent doing as little non-knitting activities as possible. I’m happy, my family and friends are scoring lots of cool knitted goods and my great nieces and nephews are still too little to know I owe them quilts and sock monkeys. But, they’re wearing cool sweaters and socks

I knit year-round, although perhaps a little less in summer. Between presents for new babies, birthdays, and Christmas, and the occasional thing for myself, there always seems to be a reason to knit!

I knit year round but what I’m knitting changes. (nothing like trying to knit in summer with a warm heavy sweater in your lap)

I knit all the time, but especially in the winter. There’s nothing like curling up on the couch with an afghan and cider, knitting away a snowy day.

Definitely Fall, though I do try to knit year round.

Fall is the best time, followed closely by Winter, then Spring. Summer is sometimes good too…. um… i guess I knit all year round… just with a/c cranked up most of the time to keep me cool…..
