Big Projects and a CONTEST!
We’ve watched Rebekah put this beautiful Mitered Crosses Blanket together for Kevin over the past few weeks. Here they are at Knit Night last night, with the finished product. Made entirely out of Madelinetosh Vintage, it has us all wishing for one of our own! See how she did mirror images with the colors? With the border, this one took 13 skeins. Next she’s thinking of doing this in a baby blanket with a lighter yarn and six squares. I’m thinking Cascade Superwash Sport would be perfect for a baby blanket like this. Or the Worsted 220 Superwash. Even though I love this in the Madelinetosh Vintage, moms always like things that are machine wash and dry. Make it easy on them.
Our Camp Loopy Project Two is to make an 800 yd. + project (using at least one color from your country’s flag). I’m still waffling on projects (although now thinking of this mitered baby blanket…). I keep looking at all of my options and garnering ideas from everyone. So my contest question for this month is: What is the biggest project you have made and how many yards (or meters) was it? Mine was the crocheted afghan I made for Camp Loopy last year – 2600 yards. Leave your answer in the comments below and we’ll do a random drawing next week for some $25 Loopy gift certificates! (And maybe I’ll get some more ideas from your comments in the meantime.)

I made an afghan that had at least 2300 yards in it. However I over bought the yarn and had enough left over to make 2 adult hoodies and one child’s sweater.

I made each of my sons a 12-square blanket with a pattern by Manos (similar to the Four Season Throw). So, 1600-1700 yards x 2. But each square is a different stitch pattern so a fun knit.

the biggest project I have done is a long-sleeve sweater for my husband. It took a little over 8 skeins of Cascade 220.

I made a bright orange bulky blanket using 12 skeins of blue sky alpacas bulky for a grand total of 540 yards. I made my size 35 needles out of centrifuge tubes!

I made the Reversibly Cabled Afghan by Lily Chin longer and changes to the pattern repeats to make it wider – used around 3,150yards – most of 16 skeins of Wool Ease. Whew. It is a much loved wedding gift.

Mine was a wedding present for a friend, 5800 yards of cashmere cabled goodness. I so want to make another, but there’s no way I can get the same yarn at that price again!

That blanket looks awesome!
My largest project was a Shipwreck (pattern on knitty) out of Skinny Bugga. I estimate it took 1500 yards. It also used 4500+ beads and took me 11 months of on-again-off-again knitting.

I don’t know the exact yardage, but I have made a couple of crochet afghans that covered the top of a queen-sized bed as wedding gifts. They both took a LOT of yarn…crochet just eats up the yarn!

I once knit a twin sized blanket out of some simply soft. I probably went through at least 10 skeins? And that’s like 300 yards a skein? I have no idea, I started with some and just kept buying more until it was big enough! It weighs a ton though. Simply soft on size 6 needles is a large project for a twin sized blanket. This was years ago though, before I knew I had such better options. Actually, I never bother to weave in the ends.

I made a Barn Raising afghan for my parents this year for Christmas. It was 42 squares using about 75 yards each. About 3150 yards, plus the border. Took forever, but I’m so happy with it…

I don’t know the yardage, but I made a large size Adult Surprise with all my alpaca yarn and I used up half a large plastic box. I was attempting to get rid of yarn and only made room for more !!

One of the largest projects I’ve knitted is a Cobblestone pullover for my husband. It used over 1,500 yards of worsted weight. I’ve crocheted several blankets for my boys too, and am sure those took over 1,000 yards of yarn each. I made the blankets before Ravelry came around, so I don’t have any of my actual stats anymore

Ombre knitted blanket from Last Minute Knitted Gifts – 4560 yards of super soft alpaca yarn. It was one of the very first projects I made.

My best guess is my [age of brass & steam](project) from last summer’s camp projects that used 1600+ yds because before Ravelry, I had not documented amount of yarn used.

Wow, that was a looooong time ago, about 1985, when I crocheted my baby brother a Trip Around the World afghan in his freshman year of high school. Three hundred fifty-seven 4″ squares, basically a granny but with holes only in the corners. I think there were 7 or 8 colors, so I estimate at least 2100-2400 yards of Pingofrance or other similar Pingouin yarns. It won first prize at the State Fair, after only winning second prize at a local fair!

I haven’t made a blanket – yet! (I do have plans to make a Barn Raising Quilt for my daughter.) I think my biggest project would either have been my Featherweight that I knitted for Camp Loopy last year or the Cambridge Jacket that I knitted for my husband (as a pullover). Both used about 1300 yards and I love them both!

I’ve made several blankets and afghans. . The largest used over 3500 yards of yarn, but that may not be the most. I once made a blanket that was all single crochet, and had stripes of about 16 different yarns. I’d have no way of calculating the yardage, but it weighs over 6 pounds, so I imagine it is a large number.

My biggest finished project was a prayer shawl that took about 580 yards of worsted weight yarn. I do have a half finished afghan stashed away somewhere that I might finish someday. My project two will be the most yardage I have ever used. Hopefully I won’t get bored with it half done. I will be knitting Radiance Shawl by Helen Stewart in Cascade Heritage (unless I change my mind!)
Susanna said,
June 15, 2012 @ 2:57 pm
Girasole might win for most yardage (made with cascade 220) as I don’t knit afghans. I have crocheted a few afghans but don’t remember how many yards I have used on those. I have knit quite a few lace shawls but I think they have mostly been in the 700 to 1200 yard range. Then again I routinely knit sweaters and cardigans that are around 1200 yards. Elphaba was one of the last ones I made.

One of my current works in progress is the Saffron Cables Blanket, which should run me just under 2600 yards when it’s done. The most yardage in a project I’ve actually finished though is a three way tie for my Autumn Arbor Wedding Stole, my Autumn Arbor Honeymoon Shawl, and my In Dreams Shawl, all coming in at 1500 yards. Although come to that, my October Frost sweater might have been a little more.
It’s nice to look back on the larger items I’ve knit – thanks for the contest Sheri!

I have crocheted a couple of scrap afghans that would probably clock in around 1000-2000 yards at least. I have no idea though as those were done pre-Ravelry, nor did I keep up with yardage amounts of scraps that I was using. From the projects that I have documented it would have to be a Wicked sweater that I knit using almost 900 yards. I always seem to stick with smaller projetcs. Camp Loopy Project 2 will definitely be a stretch to get done in a month, especially since I decided to pick lace. Whatever was I thinking?!?

I’m honestly not sure. I’ve done several crocheted afghans, but I’m horrible about keeping track of yardage used for my projects. I’m thinking the biggest is probably the afghan assembled from my square a day in May blocks from last year. The blanket itself is almost exactly queen sized, and I know I used up a full 1 pound skein and then some of each color over the course of crocheting the blocks. After the joining and border… it might be close to 3000 yds, I guess?
Aside from that, I have a giant doily blanket in progress (but momentarily stalled) that’s probably over 10 skeins of simply soft already… I lost count of how many I’ve bought as I ran out of the ones I had.

I made my niece an afghan (out of Knitters mag I think) that I had to hold 3 yarns together and knit on chunky needles. Her brother decided he should get one too so in 2006 I found a pattern for a mitered square and made 64 squares. I think I used about 2400 yards for it. It was 2 solid colors and 1 multi. Wasn’t too hard to knit but the sweing of them all together and weaving in the ends was a bear.

In the ancient times of the early 80s, I knitted an afghan from a magazine pattern that was called ‘Falling Leaves.’ The pattern called for autumn colors, but as I was making it as a wedding gift I went for the oh so practical pure white. I started with 10 skeins figuring that would be plenty. Well, by the middle of skein 9, I knew it wouldn’t be. My mom, who was knitting some of the leaves for me, raced to the store and got every skein the shop still had with our dyelot, which was another 16 skeins. Knitting it all on size 5 needles, we ended up with half a skein left. And I must admit the finished project was quite stunning, wish I’d taken a photo. The friend I made it for was totally overcome, as it was the only handmade thing she’d ever owned. I cant even guess at the yardage, but the yarn would’ve stretched from here to the moon and halfway back.

Before I was a knitter, I crocheted afghans. When I was in high school and college, I crocheted huge, 1 piece afghans (all acrylic!!!) that were anywhere from 2500 to 3500 yards. At the time, I found the repetition so peaceful. I still have all of the blankets, folded up in one of my storage closets, and I bust one out and use it from time to time. The largest one will cover a full size bed.

It must have been the sweater I’ve made out of organic wool… Some cables, a turtleneck – there was probably around 1000 yards of lovely O-Wool Classic in there. Unless it was the baby blankets I made out of much finer yarn? Oh, yes, that’s it: those blankets took about 1200 yards of yarn each.

I had to go look on Ravelry projects to see which one had more “mileage”.
I made a bunch of baby afghans (most was 1300 yds)
But the biggest so far is a gansey style pullover at about 2000 yds.
I am planning on making an afghan this fall.

The biggest project I ever knit was an afghan made of Mandala squares, using the square from this sweater, http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/magical-mandalas-aka-mandala. I think I did 4 squares by 6, tho I’m not sure. It was a wedding present for friends in pre-ravelry, pre-digital camera days, so I have no record of it. I know I used 12 colors of Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted, I think 3 skeins of each color, more of the main dark brown color.

My largest project has been a Horseshoe Afghan – first time cabling as well as knitting anything larger than a scarf/baby hat. Right now, it has used up 1500 yards (but knitting with two yarns, so really it has been 3000 yards), but I’m thinking about adding to it – the dorm beds can get to be rather long!

I once made a queen-sized granny square bedspread. It draped over the sides and foot down to the floor. I have no real idea of how many yards I used, but Ravelry has similar projects listing 7,000-10,000 yards in those. So let’s go with somewhere around there.
The crazy part? That was a gift – so I’m making one for me. yowza.

As far as my knitting goes though, the largest project so far is Camp Loopy project 1!!! 400 yards is a lot for me and knitting!!! I am really loving how it is turning out though. “The Sunlight Shawl For Sad People”. Mine is in Shibui sock in Finch and random striping with Ron Weasley from Woolen St. Mills. Of course, Camp project 2 will knock out camp project 1 with 800 yds!!! Have a good weekend everyone!!!!

One spring and summer I worked on my largest project ever. I had made an afghan for my son’s birthday – which is in February. Thinking that it would be a great idea to make one for my daughter’s upcoming birthday, I set about making a huge afghan. Unfortunately, for this project, her birthday is in JULY!!! OMG!! That thing was so heavy and so big and so annoying! I finally finished and sent it off to her in time for her birthday, but never again have I made an afghan! It was endless and the yardage was beyond quantifying.
Recently, she sent me a picture of that afghan which she is still using. I had thought I would never make another, but her picture made me smile and now I know it’s just a question of time before I start another. But it will definitely be made during the chillier months of the year! For sure.

Hmm, good question. I made multiple sweaters back in colleage and didn’t keep track of yardage then, so those I am not sure about; also a friend’s wedding shawl which was large (but I have no idea about yardage). Since I’ve been keeping track, it looks as though the largest project was one of my Girasole shawls (you saw this one at a Spring Fling!): that one was 1495 yards.
But right now I’m working on a project (out of Loopy Ewe yarn!) that will be my biggest yet, for sure: 2200 yards, I’m estimating, a knitted afghan, Fibo-Optic. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fibo-optic

My biggest project must have been the alphabet afghan I made for my then small girls in the 1980′s. It was a Spinnerin pattern, acrylic of course, done in crochet afghan stitch. It fits the top of a twin bed. I think I only purchased the background color and used scraps for the letters. It has been washed many times, is still around here and is still frequently used. But I crocheted an afghan for my sister that is almost twice as big as a blanket should be about 15 years ago. It is just HUGE! Since it is so big and also crocheted I am sure I used a mega amount of yardage. She still uses it to this day despite its size!
The most yardage I ever used in a project more recently is probably the slightly over 800 yard vest I made for Camp Loopy 2011 Project 3.

I made three afghans one year for Christmas – one for my mom, one for my inlaws and one for my son’s godmother. Each had over 2000 yards of yarn in them, and the patterns were rather intricate. I started in January and they were all done by Christmas. I think I may have made a fourth that year – for my brother and SIL – or I made theirs the next year when I made one for each of the three adult kids, but I don’t remember. I remember the motivation was that I wanted everyone in the family to have something that I had knitted in case something happened to me. I can be a little too practical at times…

I made a 2X sized Isabella vest, which was supposed to be for me, but I misread the pattern notes and thought the measurement I picked was the finished sweater size, but it was really the actual bust measurement. And the pattern was designed to have about 8″ of positive ease. (So my sweater, that I believed was going to be 48″ around, really turned out to be 56″, and it is a long tunic style vest.
So…..I used 10 skeins of Cascade 220 (for a total of 2200 yards) to make a sweater that is too big for anyone in my family. If I have to frog it does it still count as an FO?

A crocheted aran afghan made out of cotton worsted wt. yarn when I was just beginner to crochet. Didn’t know any better to 1. not work with cotton, esp. worsted wt. since it’s heavy, and 2. that crocheting takes a lot more yardage than you’d think!. Finished afghan looked pretty good, but not soft at all, and too heavy for comfort. Took 6-7 one lb. skeins of yarn obtained at JoAnn’s. Last summer my 5year old grandson requested an afghan in his favorite colors, blue, black and gray! gramma added a little red and cream and made a log cabin blanket using Eco-wool, around 2,000 yards. Since he and his family are currently in northern England it keeps him warm on those frequently cold nights.

I haven’t delved into knitting blankets yet, so my biggest projects have been long-sleeved sweaters. I’ve got a Na Craga (1540 yds of Black Abbey Worsted) and a Sky Isle Cardigan (about 1300 yds of MadTosh Chunky).

Well, since I originally learned how to knit soley (pun intended
) for the purpose of knitting socks, I haven’t used as much yardage as some of you…but because of Camp Loopy, I tackled my first sweater and have done 2 since then. So the most yards I’ve used have been sweater yardage: between 1100 and 1400.

My biggest project was the Cambridge Shawl I knit for last year’s Camp Loopy (925 yards). I’m working on a Barn Raising Quilt too (on and off for the past 4 years though!), and by the time I’m done with that it’ll have used well over 2000 yards.

so…I have not done much impressive long yardage marathon projects, but my two biggest is a current work in progress using Tahki Cotton Classic and I making the mitered square blanket from the Mason Dixon book. I have about 40 squares done out of my goal of 100. I would say that is about 2400 yards so far…I am thinking that each square is about 50-60 yards a piece?? From there my biggest finished project is an extra large Summerflies with extra extra repeats throughout in which I needed a second skein of malabrigo lace…about 550 yards, maybe!! Good luck deciding your project 2….this one will definitely be a challenge for me (clearly I knit small projects!!)

The largest thing I’ve made since discovering nice yarn is my Print O’ the Wave Stole for Camp Loopy Project 3 last year. I made it out of Trendsetter Cashwoole, and I simply love it. It’s nice and light, but warm enough for a scarf. I think it ended up being about 900 yds.
I’m currently in the middle of an even bigger project, though: an Evenstar shawl out of Wollmeise lace. I’ve been working on it since February and am just about to start the knitted on border. That one’s going to be about 1600 yds.

I made 6 of Lily Chin’s reversibly cabled afghans for my Mother and her sisters and, one for me of course, about 2300 yards each and each a different color. They took so long that was probably the cheapest year of knitting I’ve had. Sure was fun to hand out at a reunion though

My biggest project is actually blocked and drying as we speak! I just made a Valentines Design Shawl out of WM Lace in the Indisch Rot colorway. It’s somewhere in the 1300-1400 yd range.
I’m actually going to modify the pattern a little and do it again for my Camp Loopy Project 2!

My largest project to date was knitted Moderne Log Cabin blankets (from Mason Dixon) that were made from Lionbrand Wool-Ease (for ease of care for the receiving non-knitters). I made three blankets for my adult stepson/step daughter and son in law in the colors of their favorite NFL team. Each blanket took approximately 4,137 yards of yarn. It was great knitting while I was enjoying watching my favorite team. Pics can be found on Ravelry (MarlaF).

I’ll admit it, my biggest-yardage project isn’t that impressive. (Well yardage-wise at least, the project itself turned out AWESOME). It was The Tea Leaves cardigan by Melissa LaBarre that i completed a few months ago. Clocked in at around 1200 yards. One of these days maybe I’ll have the attention span for a blanket!

I’m not sure. I have this blanket I started last year (it requires sewing up) – Mitred Crosses like this one, except I made mine out of sock yarn. I know I had 4 100g skeins-ish of white and at least 1 100 gram skein of white and 5 additional skeins at 50g. It is 35 squares (7 long and 5 wide), and I have one more skein of white for the sewing up/border. That is probably my biggest project.

My biggest ever project was a queen-sized crocheted roses afghan for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. It was so long ago that I honestly don’t remember how much yarn it took, but they continued to use it for years, until their passing. (My Daddy died in 1985, and my Mom died in 1991, before I got pregnant with my youngest son. So, as you can see, a lot has happened since then; remembering the quantity from that long ago is not easy now, sorry, other than to say it was a WHALE OF A LOT of yarn, especially since I have always been a loose crocheter!!!) The afghan was (and still is) reds for the roses flowers and greens for the leaves and background: my Mom’s color choices.

We still have it of course as it was quite an accomplishment to get the sleeves to match the patterning on the body – gees – I don’t have the energy for anything that fussy these days LOL – I think it was about 2200 yards. thanks for the opportunity to win – melody who is furiously knitting on Camp Loopy 1

I made a sweater for someone who was generously proportioned that clocked in at about 1350 yds. As a quilter, you’d think I’d be less afraid of doing a large project like a blanket, but I’m just not sure about my staying power.

My largest project was a full sized crochet blanket, we got one as a wedding gift in white but we kept fighting over it, so I got my hands on the pattern and made a green one to match. It took probably about 8-9 skeins of red heart tweed worsted yarn, and I kept running out and having to run around to find more. But now we don’t have to share, we can each snuggle under our own blanket!

Hi Sheri,
I have the pattern for the Mitered Crosses, but haven’t had enough time lately to devote myself to it. My largest project to date would probably have to be an afghan I made for a retiring co-worker. It was a Four Seasons throw by Judith Shangold all made with Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica (12 skeins = 1656.0 yards ). I also have a hibernating Lizard Ridge afghan made with Noro Kueryon yarn–I’ve lost track of how many skeins I’ve used, but it’s quite large.

I don’t know if it counts because it is still in progress but I am making a Noro Log Cabin for a King size bed. I estimate it will take 72 squares, which is 72 skeins of Noro Kureyon – plus some yarn to edge it. Rough estimate is it will end up between 8000 and 9000 yards of yarn – and weigh around 20 pounds. Call me crazy!

When I left for college my freshman year, I took along a scarf project that required about 1500 yards of a light cream colored yarn. It was fairly complicated (for me) with alternating cables, seed stitch, and bobbles. I underestimated the amount of free time I would have in college and mostly worked on it during Christmas breaks. Finally finished it over Christmas my senior year. It was wide and extra long and could be wrapped around my head like a scarf, then wrapped around my shoulders, and then back around to tie in front. Perfect for keeping out the icy cold Oklahoma wind and looked pretty funky with my favorite brown tweed jacket and khaki skirt. I still drag it out once in a while, but it is getting a little worse for wear… time to start another one!
