Early Mornings and a CONTEST
This is what it looks like in our back yard at 6 am. The sun isn’t quite up yet, but it’s on its way. How do I know this? Because I’ve finally decided that there is hardly ever going to be a time when I feel like exercising after I get home from work at night. I tried fooling myself into thinking that after work was the best time for me to do it (since I am so not a morning person), but it just meant that I’d come home, not exercise, and feel slightly guilty the rest of the evening.
So, I heard about the Fitbit and thought maybe that would help. If someone says I’m supposed to walk 10,000 steps a day and do 10 flights of stairs, then those are the numbers I try to hit. And since I started getting up early in the morning to walk for an hour, it has been working. I do like getting it out of the way before work. And I get to see pretty scenes like this (finally – the sun is up above the horizon.):
And this (I love seeing mountains first thing every morning.):
These things have helped me stick to this routine for a couple of months now:
1. Personally, I need to do it every single day of the week. I do take Saturdays and Sundays off, but I’m just about ready to throw at least Saturday into the mix, too. Mondays are a bugger when 6 am rolls around again.
2. I listen to audiobooks. It makes the hour of walking pass by really quickly.
3. I fool my brain. I tell myself that I’m going to walk for 30 minutes (in one direction, away from my house) and then I’ll just walk home. That equals an hour, but the last part of it is just “walking home”.
The downside? I am tired too early in the evening. It’s affecting my knitting, FPS. Somehow I need to learn to be a morning person AND a night person. Is that possible?? I need to finish my Camp Loopy Project Three this weekend. (I’m making a Derecho out of the Loopy Solid Series. So many fun colors to choose from.)
Today’s blog contest question: Are you a night person or a morning person? (And while we’re at it, do you have any tips about sticking to an exercise routine?) Leave a comment below and I’ll draw names for two more skeins of Wollmeise Lace next week.
We do have winners from last week’s blog contest! I’m sending a skein of Wollmeise Lace to Linda in IL and Amber in IN. Congratulations to you two!

Well, pre-kids there was no doubt I was a morning person. However, now I end up staying up too late because it is quiet time where I can knit, read, think, etc. I’d like to figure out how to be both too because exercise is something I need to fit in to a busy schedule. I enjoyed reading your tips a lot. Thanks for the extra motivation!

Ican so easily talk myself out of exercise! Now that hubby is retired and diagnosed as pre-diabetic, he takes his exercise very seriously (much more than I do) and because of that I get to the gym more often than I would otherwise. But I keep telling myself I need to work on doing ‘planks’ every day…and if they would work just by visualizing doing them- well, I would be in great shape!
Altho I work dayshift, I am so definitely not a morning person….and altho I worked nights for more years than I want to think about ….I am not a night person either. An afternoon/evening person maybe!

I guess that I’m more of a morning person, but not always by choice. The dog usually wakes me up at 5:30 or so, whether I have to go to work or not! Sorry, but I don’t really have any exercise tips, if I did I would for sure use them!

I am definitely a morning person. I begin fizzing out by late afternoon. I don’t think you can change your insides from morning to night or vice versa. I think we are what we are and we are who we are. Advice on exercising? No, just do the best you can. And don’t beat yourself up if you don’t feel like exercising every day. Just keep going on.

I already wrote a comment, but just thought of something else to add about exercising. Clean your own house. Do not hire someone to do it for you. YOU do it. That is a lot of exercise especially if you clean every day!!!

Definitely a morning person! One thing I do when I’m having a hard time squeezing in any exercise is walking the long way to the restroom. Instead of walking down the hall from my office, I go up the stairs, down the hall, down the far set of stairs, and then back to the restroom.

Total morning person, since I was 3yo. No exaggeration on that, much to my mother’s dismay. I also tend to nod off knitting in the evening – I get up at 5:00am! I try to find time during the day to do any tricky bits and save the garter and stocking sts for the evening. That’s a good reason to have multiple WIPs, right?
I find I can stay awake longer (not always a good thing) if I get up and do a small chore, like unload the dishwasher when I start to nod off a bit.

I think what you are doing is great! Keep it up!
Just staying active is half the battle. My mom (90 yr young) has an embroidered picture on her wall that says, “to rest, is to rust”. She is still playing golf and winning games and prizes all the time.

I’m an night person…. I work at a Local Community college… I register for a exercise class that falls during my lunch hour… I’m more likely to go to the class than exercise before or after work. My favorite class is water aerobics. This term I also registered for a yoga class after work two nights a week… Let’s see if I make them

I usually like mornings and need to start an exercise plan. I haven’t slept through the night in 7 years and tend to get by on less sleep (some nights are better than others). I usually am in bed by 10:30 every night and have no trouble falling asleep (usually though there is a rare night when I can’t fall asleep). I should start exercising in the morning, a co-worker moved and gave me her exercise bike. It’s a nice model and I really do want to play with it. It’s been such a hot summer that I haven’t touched it.

I normally would wake at 7am, but that was to give me plenty of time to drink my latte and read my newspaper. I normally would be in bed by midnight giving me the evening to knit or read and/or watch tv and still get at least 7 hours of sleep. Sometimes I have a nap in my chair in the afternoon. I do work in a bookstore parttime so getting a lot of walking in on those days is no problem at all! I used to wear a pedometer but don’t anymore. I easily do 10,000 steps….

I’m so much a night person that it frightens me sometimes. I really seem to hit my groove around the time the sun goes down, and have a difficult time going to sleep before 1am…no matter how much sleep I got the night before or how tired I was during the day.
As for keeping up with the exercise, you just have to push through. Your body is used to having a certain amount of stamina for every day and eventually it will increase because you require more. We used to have to argue with patients at PT ALL THE TIME over that. It’s also a good idea to throw in some weight bearing exercises…as a woman it will help keep your bones strong. You really need to mix up your routine every once in a while so your body doesn’t get used to it. Try some pilates, it’s great for strengthening and keeping flexible. PopPilates on YouTube has some great videos (with fun music!)

I am a formerly morning person who now lives with a night person, so I’ve had to do some adaptations. Some were successful, some not. Mostly, I go to bed late (for my old self, but relatively early by DH standards), wake up not as early as I used to, and exercise at the little gym at work during lunch hour.

I’m definitely a morning person, but exercise has slowly been weaned out of my life. I would much rather do work early in the day so I can knit after the kids go to bed. An hour a day is too much time for me to give away. I’d rather just knit….

Now that our mornings are starting to be cool and not so humid I am going to try to get in a routine. I totally agree that it has to be done every day so I have to find a time that will always work – like 6:30am.

I am absolutely a night person, and I’m constantly sleep-deprived because I have OMR syndrome (One More Row), and a whopping case of OME (One More Episode) to boot. I am in need of an exercise program and a housecleaning program too. Think I’ll start tracking my steps to see where I stand with daily routine, and then try to make that 10000 steps by actually leaving my house and walking the neighborhood.

I love my fitbit. Now that I’m telecommuting, I’m finding it harder to get my 10000 in per day, however, I’ve fixed that by walking 2 miles every morning. I walk all around the apartment during the day and at the end of the day, leave the house for another walk or visit to the gym. I’m averaging 11000 per day

I’m very much a night person. I only see 6am if I’ve stayed up all night! As for exercise I just try to do it without thinking about it. The more I think about it the less likely I am to do it. Another thing that helps is having a book or show that I only read or watch while on the elliptical. So if I want to finish it, I have to exercise.

I like to walk and ride a stationary bike in bad weather. The bike I have has a shelf so I can look at magazines such as knitting magazines
. I also like to listen to music while I exercise. One way to add in extra movement to each day–park far away from the store/place you are going if possible, use the stairs as much as possible.

I think I’m more of a morning person. I love the wee hours when the neighborhood is just beginning to stir. It’s definitely my favorite knitting time. I think it has to do with the fact that there can’t possibly be anywhere I’m supposed to be, or anything I should be doing that early……nothing’s open, no one’s up, can’t make noise with things like a; vacuum……I’m sure that has something to do with it.

I’m most definitely a morning person, but it takes me longer to get going these days. The easiest exercise ever was for me was when I was able to meet my best friend to walk for 40 minutes 5 days a week (we walked MTWFW and had coffee together on Thursdays). Because we each depended on each other, it made it hard to skip. Walking gets harder in the winter as it is so dark so late — and so cold. We ended up using our local community building (basically a big gym) and walked around in circles inside during the winter. Not very exciting, but better for us than just waiting for good weather. Good luck keeping it up!

I am NOT A MORNING PERSON, so that must mean I am a night owl. Actually, I do have trouble falling asleep at night anytime before 11 pm. I tried to ‘bribe’ myself with a ‘bottomless mug’ card from Brueggers Bagels. I live a half mile (or thereabouts) from a Brueggers and I figured I would reward myself with free coffee when I got there and walk the 1/2 mile home (theoretically several times a week). … sad to say, it was easier for me to bundle in the winter and walk, drink coffee, and knit a bit before returning home than it has been in the summer. Then, my son would call me to walk with him around the lake near him, but now he’s working full time (praise the Lord for a full time job, but no more walking with Mom).

I am an evening person. My ideal schedule would be if I could go to bed at midnight and get up around 8 but that is not to be. My DH has to be up by 6 so we are in bed by 11 and I get up with him. By 7, I am on my treadmill. We have Netflix and I watch a mystery series like Rosemary and Thyme or Murdock mysteries and treadmill through an entire episode – about 50 minutes. These are sort of gentle mysteries, not a lot of blood. The body makes a brief appearance and then the mysteries are solved. I do at least 3 days a week on the treadmill and then bike the Katy trail on weekends. I also do some light weight work.
I really don’t have any hints, Sheri. I just make myself do it because I know I need the exercise.

The only thing that works for me when exercising is to have a schedule. I do really well with 90-day programs that tell you what to do each day. When I don’t have a specific program or schedule, I definitely don’t do as well. I also find that posting my workouts to Facebook helps to keep me accountable. As for sticking with a routine, my husband and I take a walk most evenings. This summer has been very HOT and we have even walked then. Just make sure to bring some cold water along for the walk and have some good shoes. It is a way for us to come back together after a day apart.

I think I’m more of a morning person because I wake up around 6:30, which is when I begin my exercise routine. I usually try to be in bed around 10:00. My advice for keeping a morning running routine:
1.) Keep your running shoes and clothes by the bed.
2.) Put on your clothes and running shoes first thing in the morning.
3.) Do not allow yourself to shower until the exercise routine has been complete.

I work out at lunch. We are lucky enough to have a gym onsite so I can fit a class in. I put them on my calendar ahead of time so no one can schedule meetings and then the reminder pops up and I feel obligated to go. If we didn’t have the gym though I’d walk during that time. I am not a night person and have to get up pretty early already just so I have some play time with my daughter in the morning before work. This way I can still get my workout and I just eat while I’m working at my desk in lieu of a lunch break since I use it for workouts.

I have no advice for sticking to an exercise schedule. I definitely have not been. I don’t have time in the morning (I’d have to wake up at 4:30 am which is NOT happening) and I’m WAYYY too tired at night.

I am a morning person, and get an hour long walk out of the way first thing. I have a few options for walking in ‘loops’ around my neighborhood, and I try to mix it up by doing the ‘loops’ counter clockwise (or widdershins if you’re feeling British) just to keep things interesting. I also take Pilot, my dog, along for company. I worry about keeping it up once the winter comes but I’m kind of addicted now!

I am definitely a morning person. My DH and I usually head off to bed by 9:30 at night. We ate up workdays by 5:15 and weekends by 6:30. Our chocolate Lab gets us out for walks twice a day – first thing in the morning and then again in the evening. The warmer the weather the later that evening walk happens.
Unfortunately, I am having some really bad sciatic nerve pain the last few weeks and haven’t been able to go. I really wish I would hear from the doctor on what we need to do!

This spring I started waking up early to do yoga and pilates. After just a few weeks, I really started craving it. Sometimes life gets in the way, but I don’t beat myself up because of that, I just get back to it as soon as I can. I use DVD’s and my “instructors” always encourage me that I at least showed up!
My daughter asked me why I have bought a few cute yoga outfits when no one ever sees them – well, it helps me want to work out!
I feel better, am so much more flexible, my clothes fit nice and the scale has nicer numbers on it!
You go girl!

Also I just had the same conversation with my DH tonight -it is our habit to sit on the deck evenings and take in the sunset, but I don’t know if that is my favorite time of the day or early mornings, I love them both. I do get a lot done in the early am but I love the evening and watching my chickens running around to catch the bugs who seem to love the late afternoon/evening. And the sunsets.

I started doing a morning walk in July, but I started with 15 minutes and worked my way up by five minutes a week every week. My trick is to take a photo of the scenery while I’m walking and post it on my Facebook wall. If I skip a day (or a few), my friends start to ask where my Morning Walk photo is for that day. I’m not a morning person, but the heat where I live makes it mandatory to do the walk in the morning because it doesn’t cool down here until after dark in the evening.

My recommendation for sticking to a workout is making sure it easily fits into your life. Schedule your workout as an appointment and then get a buddy to join you. The other thing is to start gradually and build up to the time or distance that you want because starting out too far and too fast could lead to injuries and discouragement!

Both. I walk at 6 and then right before bed. People say that exercising in the evening wakes you up, but it doesn’t seem to alter my sleep patterns. Maybe it is the half hour of knitting before bed that makes me sleep!

I am overwhelmingly a morning person. I wake up spontaneously at 04:00-04:30. This actually works out most of the year, as I am a school bus driver who must report to work by 06:00.
BUT…during summer vacation or Christmas vacation or weekends……still it is the same hour. Sigh.
The only way I can make the exercise thing happen, is to do it at the same time, same place every day. I get offf my bus at 09:00, put on the walking shoes and hit the road again. It is just what happens. IF I sit down and think it over…that is the end of it. It has to be the automatic and non-negotiable.
Good luck to all who are trying to start a new good habit.

Haven’t you found the coolness and the freshness of the air the past couple of weeks to be some kind of w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l? The best way to maintain a walking program is to walk with someone else.

I’m totally programmed to be a morning person, i love getting up at 5a to go out and run. Unfortunately right now I am stuck working nights, 2p-midnight/1am followed by a v long drive home, so my body clock is out of whack. I have managed to run some on weekdays before coming to work, tho not the full workout I used to enjoy, but I have a bosu ball and a ministepper at home and can use those anytime, 10-15 min at a time.
I also probably do 20 flights of stairs a day between home and work.
The best way to stick to an exercise program is exactly what you do, trick yourself by saying you’re going to walk 10 mins and then keep going. A month from now, it’ll be habit and your legs will just keep going. I wish someone would invent a way that all of us, morning and night people, could knit in our sleep.

Ooooh, you’re doing well on your 10,000 steps for today! I never seemed to get beyond about 4000!
I (and my husband, too) am a night person. We tend to stay up quite late on weekends, sometimes until the sun is coming up, before we succumb to sleep. Although I’ve noticed that both of us can fall asleep easily while watching TV.
Unfortunately, going to bed late each night but trying to get up around 4:30 makes me sleepy all the time, and headachy a lot, too! And THAT cuts into my very small available knitting time! Knitting has always relaxed me, enough to put me to sleep anyway, but combined with sleep shortage, not much gets done.
My plan is that I’ll exercise more when I’m retired, because I’ll have the time! We try now, but it’s hard with the current schedules. Also, there’ll be more time to knit — Yay!!!!
Thanks for another great contest!

If I had to choose, I’d say morning person. If I sleep in and stay up late, I feel like I’ve wasted the day. I try to get to work by about 6:15 AM so I can pick my kids up from school at 3:30
As for exercise, I do best when I have a plan and it’s scheduled. I’m currently on a 60 day program that’s called “Insanity” and it’s super hard but super addicting. I do it during my lunch hour every day. No excuses. When I’m done with Insanity, I’ve already got my next exercise programs planned out as well as running a few races this fall/winter. I’ve lost a little but of weight so far and have about 23 pounds to go.

Wow, tough question! I guess I’d have to say morning person simply because I’m positively worthless after 9:30. It’s hard to get up in the morning; bed is too comfy! But once I’m up, I’m up and good to go. I’ve used audio books when driving, but not while walking. I’m getting ready to start a new book so maybe I’ll use it as my walking soundtrack! I am definitely a night person…I don’t properly wake up until about 10 a.m. or so at least, even though I have to get up much earlier than that to go to work. I trick myself into exercising (walking) more by parking at the far end of the parking lot from wherever I’m going, purposely putting stuff far from where its needed in the house, leaving things out in my car when I get home even though I know I’ll need them later (then I have to walk back out to the car again) and other little things like that. None of them alone make much difference but my hope is that all of them together do add up!

I do love to run though, and I try to get out at a reasonable hour in the morning, especially during the heat of summer. Here are my tips:
-set out your clothes + water + gear the night before, so you can just step into them and go.
-tell yourself over and over “I’m going out first thing in the morning” as if there in no other option. this is something that MUST get done like grocery shopping or going to work.
-concetrate on how good you feel for the rest of the day!!! You will soon realize that you love that feeling & it’s worth the hassle of getting up and getting out there!

I live in SE Alaska where it rains a lot and is dark in the winter until 7 or 8am. So, walking outside is not usually an option. Definitely a night person. The sun is an evil thing.
For exercising, keep track of what you do everyday.
I started tracking just by writing it on a calendar. Then I started a simple spreadsheet. Now, it is not so simple a spreadsheet. But, it is wonderful to look back and see that I have only missed walking 5 times this year (due to sickness). Even if it is just around the block, it is better than nothing.
It always seems like such a commitment when you think that you need to exercise for the rest of your life. So, don’t. All you need to do, is exercise a little bit today. Tomorrow, you will need to exercise a little bit today. After a while, you have excercised consistently for a month straight, and that really wasn’t so hard because you only have to worry about today.

As for exercise, I haven’t been regular since I got sick in April, but before then I did walk each day. I picked a modest amount, like 30 minutes, and had to do at least that every day. I enjoy being a morning person and I was during college. But now I am enjoying the evenings more and more. It just depends on my sleeping schedule. I love both, for the quiet time they both offer… but with the mornings, I get to have coffee.
My boyfriend and I downloaded these apps called Zombies Run! for his Iphone and my Android where it is basically a gps tracking speed game/run keeper if you run, but it has a really interesting story line of a zombie attack that you listen to. So I think of it more of an ‘interactive’ audiobook. It is 8 dollars to download and we both love it. We enjoy walking (him-running) and listening to it, when the sun is setting, and it is cooler.

as far as sticking to an exercise routine i always say keep trying things until you find something you like ( and always do any new exercise routine for at least 2 weeks before you decide whether you like it or not as it takes your body that long to get used to the change ) and always do it with a friend ( or 2 or 3) so you encourage each other along on those days when one of you is feeling like giving in .

YOu are doing a great job working out! Now you just need to add some weights into the mix and you will start dropping the pounds left and right! I’ve been doing ChaLEAN Extreme and it is SO MUCH FUN! My blog link goes to my fitness coaching page where you can check out some info on it if you want! I also drink a Shakeology shake every day and it is amazing how much better I feel, drinking an all natural shake full of superfoods and protein. Did I mention it tastes like a liquified brownie?! YUM!
I am a night person. Trying to convert to morning person. Working out is better in the morning, but I just love staying up late watching a movie and knitting or weaving!

I’m definitely a night person. I HATED having to be on my nursing unit at 7 am. That’s not even a civilized time for my first cuppa! However, retirement is wunderbar, and I set my own hours.
Sticking with exercises: for me, I walked on a treadmill every lunch hour (not outside in the pollen, thank you very much) and listened to mystery audio books. If I wanted to know “who done it” I had to walk.

Unfortunately in order to work out before work I have to be at the gym at 5 am and that’s just too early for working out, so if I try to go to the gym before I get home. I have to make sure I am prepared to go straight to the gym, if I go home I will come up with every excuse why I can’t/shouldn’t go.

I used to be a night person. I think there was starting to be some hope of being at least a competent morning person…and then I started midwifery school. Now I’m just tired. We keep odd hours and are frequently up all night; I’ve learned to nap whenever I can, and to feel relatively refreshed after 3-4 hours of sleep.
On exercising, I’ve got nothing–I’m looking forward to reading some of the tips above.

I am a night person who wishes she were a morning one.
Everyone in my original family, all of my relatives, are all morning people. Somehow, I missed that part of the gene pool. I wake up tired and hit my stride around 10 PM. I wish it were otherwise. On the other hand, going to bed at 8 or 9 PM is so depressing and so OLD, to me. I feel that only when in my 80s or so would that be appropriate. Ugh!
I wear a pedometer which really helps. I exercise in the morning before my shower.
And my one trick is that if I have exercised for the day, I get to use my favorite shampoo and conditioner! Otherwise, I have to use the grocery store stuff. Often that works for me!

My rec for exercising – do something you love, whether it’s walking, dancing, or kick-boxing, and create a routine and stick to it! That way there’s no dithering or psyching yourself out – just do your normal routine and you’ll be glad when it’s done.

My exercise tips are as follows: Do something you think is fun, and schedule, schedule, schedule. I live and breathe by my google calender. If it’s not in there, it doesn’t happen. So I make an exercise event six days a week, at times that work for me that day (since my hours at work change constantly- gotta love retail, right?)

I’m morning person, which is to say that I rise early and then sort of putter around knitting, reading, etc. It’s a very peaceful time. I am not overly chipper or cheerful in the morning – just awake.
The upside? When my students roll in at 8 AM still asleep, I’ve been awake for a few hours already and ready to meet them with a big grin and a whole lot of cheer. Trust me, there’s nothing an 8th grader loves more than an overcheerful adult first thing in the morning

My sister gave me a Fitbit this past spring and I really like it, it helps give you a visual of your walking/exercise. I have no super advice on how to stick with it except that you just tell yourself you’re going to do it! From late May through July, I get out early in the morning when it’s cooler (I have to be at work by 7:30, so I’m out at 5am to run). Once it’s too dark in the morning, I go back to running after work, which can be a challenge with the high temps we’ve been having in Nebraska this summer, but I think I’ve gotten used to running in the heat! I set a goal of how many days a week I’m going to run and how many miles for each run. It also helps that I have several organized runs that I’m training for. I might suggest finding some local 5k walk/runs and participating in those as ways to motivate your training and get out with other people and share in the fun. You’re doing great by sticking with it for several months already! And now I need to go out and run before the thunderstorms roll through!

But with DD off to Kindergarten in a week (yikes!) and a new puppy coming home in a few days (double yikes!) I’m hoping to both get myself back to mornings & a solid exercise routine. I’m very much a morning person. It started when I was young and was showing horses (we were usually at the show grounds around 4 in the morning) and continued when I was teaching (I would get to school around 6 – the only time I could actually get anything done!!!). Now I use my mornings to run and get my day going. I love being up before the rest of the world because I feel like I get so much more work done, and my mind is fresher. The downside is I am not much of an evening person, which with my work as a musician is a bit of an issue. My solution – coffee! And once a week I let myself sleep in.
Seeing your morning pictures of Colorado makes me miss my morning runs there. The sunrises are amazing, and I always saw interesting animals (foxes, rabbits, once I saw a beaver!). Running in Baltimore I see interesting people, but it’s not quite the same.

I haven’t been that good at sticking to an exercise routine myself so I wish I could give you a great tip but I don’t have one. I’m definitely a morning person. On weekdays I’m up at 4:30 (I commute by ferry every morning and the early hour gives me time to walk the dog for an hour before getting ready to catch my boat) but even on weekends I’m usually up by 6:30 or so. The trade off is I can’t stay up late, my brain just shuts off about 10 pm.
As for sticking to an exercise routine, I’ve found that having an event goal, like a 5k run or walk or a marathon or some kind of charity walk, that I’m specifically preparing for keeps me motivated to do my daily workout.

I’m more of a night person, but married a morning person and have gradually shifted my clock to be a morning person. I still like to stay up late and read or knit and tend to do that once or twice a week and then my schedule is off! The main benefit to being a morning person is that sometimes there is no one in the exercise room when I go downstairs to use the treadmill!

I am proud of you for sticking to your routine! And it sounds like you have a really good way of getting an hour walk in. I’m a morning person, but unfortunately, I get up at 5:15 a.m. to get ready for school. Which means getting a walk in before that is really not something I want to do. And after school I’m usually exhausted. But my husband has started to walk with me and I’ve found I really enjoy walking more when I do it with a friend!

Probably morning for but I can do either. My fitbit needs a charge as it’s fun to see the numbers go up. I used to exercise immediately when I get home before even sitting on the couch but now I do it in the morning, before sitting on the couch. Seems to help get me moving.

I guess I’m really a night person … though when I was working, I came to appreciate the early morning hours. I would leave the house early to beat the traffic, and then I’d be in the office with peace and quiet to work on things before the rest of the world got moving and things turned crazy. Now, though, I tend to get going on a project late in the day and then not want to put it down when I need to go to bed. As for the exercise … that’s a tough nut to crack! I have a treadmill, so that eliminates all my old walking outside excuses (too hot, too rainy), and my iPod is loaded with podcasts, so I always have something interesting to listen to. Ultimately, I just have to DO it … and that’s the tough part.

I’m more a morning person than an evening person, though at the moment that’s reinforced by the dog, who gets me up at 5:00 to take him for a walk. That’s my big exercise motivator. And we do afternoon walks, too. Half an hour to 45 minutes each one.

i’m neither a morning or an evening person– i just love to sleep! for exercise, i find that early afternoon is when i feel the best. luckily i have a job with very flexible hours, so once i see the sun peek out of the fog in the afternoon (i’m in San Francisco), i throw on my running shoes and head out for a few miles.
one thing that has helped me get back into running shape was to get a bike trainer. this converts my road bike into a stationary bike. so on the days i couldn’t get on the road, i just hop on the bike in the evening and watch something interesting on tv. of course, this works well because my boyfriend has a bike trainer too, and having a buddy to exercise with makes all the difference.

I’m a nite owl- when i was younger I worked the midnite to 8 AM shift- loved it. When I changed to teaching and had to get up at 5 AM it was a struggle. Now I’m retired and get up when I want but it is always early!(the downside of an aging body). I go to the pool 3 days a week- what helps is going with a friend. I do better with company. To improve you knit time try a 15 minute power nap at 4 PM. Refreshes and doesn’t keep you from sleeping at nite.
Good napping is an art.

I’m a morning person. I’m not an early morning person although I do have to get up at 5 am for work. If I could have an 11 to 7 sleep schedule, that would be perfect. I do some working out in the mornings, but can’t push myself to get up before my magic hour of 5 am. I jog twice a week with a friend on Friday and Sunday mornings around 7:30. I also work out at night, as I found a sport that I love, karate and kickboxing which only has week night classes.
You need to find something you love so you will look forward to doing it. I never found IT until I joined karate.
I walked a lot, and enjoyed it, did the recumbent bike and Nautilus at the gym. Maybe, you need someone to walk with you to motivate you?
You can’t be a morning and night person, trust me, I know from experience. You need to walk to be healthy, so you may have to give up some knitting time. Just think, if I’m not healthy, I won’t be able to knit!

I am a night owl. So much easier to stay up a little later than to get up a little earlier. My husband is the same way, if not moreso.
The best thing that happened to my exercise plan was to get a Border Collie. When he was a puppy I walked around a field with him morning and evening, without fail. Now that he’s grown, and more settled, I have fallen off that wagon.
Thanks to all for reporting their experiences. Every little bit helps!

I am a morning person, feel like I have wasted half the day if I don’t see the sun come up. Yoga is my exercise and the only way I can stick to it is to do it first thing in the morning (4am) by putting on the coffee and promise myself I can have a cup when I am done with my yoga….yoga is hard on me if I have anything in my tummy….and I LOVE my first cup of coffee, so by having it brew while I am doing my yoga, well it is win win.

I used to wake up at 4:45, get to work by 6:45, get home around 4:30 p.m. and still not workout. Evening exercise just doesn’t work for me–too many excuses available. So now I exercise in the morning. It makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something daily, even if it’s not at work.

I’m very lucky that my jobsite has a gym and all these classes are free! At night, there is always an excuse (Kids, knitting deadlines for Camp, etc). But at work, it’s great stress relief and we’ve lost weight and gained a ton of confidence! Congrats on your Fitbit (they’re awesome!).

I have no idea if I’m a night person or a morning person since I go to sleep early and wake up late. I need at least 8 hours to function and sometimes I don’t sleep through the night. I get up cranky and need to sleep early because I’m so tired. I used to be a night owl when I was younger, but I have since lost this desire to stay awake at all hours.
On the exercise thing, I seem to do a lot better if I have a partner to exercise with. My friend lets me run with her while she’s getting ready to run a 5k and I let her work out with me at the gym. We have coordinated our schedules so that we run 3 times a week and lift weights twice. It seems to be working since we push each other to keep up. I hope you keep at it. The audio books also help. Make sure you reward yourself for goals that you give yourself each week. When you finish a project, do you reward yourself with yarn? When you finish a week with the amount of time you want to exercise, you should reward yourself with a little something. New shoes, workout clothes, dinner out, etc.

Maybe we switch as we get older? One way to get up earlier is have a dog, they do not take weekends off. Your body is still adjusting, keep at it! My exercise tip sounds like a cop out, take advantage of every moment: walk the hallway faster concentrating on your muscles, pull knees to your chest while waiting for the shower to great up, stretch side to side as you cook, focus on pulling in stomach muscles throughout the day, etc.

Totally a morning person… I like the early quiet in the world.
My best work out routine was step aerobics with a friend.
I think we were more commited because neither of us wanted to be the one to cancel. Since it was a class we had show up at a set time we could not push it back. I miss those days.

I’m kind of in the middle — when I get up in the morning I’m up and alert and happy (I used to teach first period classes and the kids would give me grief because I was so chirpy)– but when I’m working on something I enjoy the evening.
I have pretty bad arthritis (one knee replacement , the other complaining) but I work with a personal trainer twice a week — she keeps me working hard. I walk, use a recumbent exercise bike (hate it!!!!) , swim in the pond, and I just bought a new bike to ride the Shining Sea Bike Path. I still find myself sitting more than I should. When I worked, I was on my feet moving around all day — now I sit and knit.
I love books on tape both for knitting and exercising.

Morning. Very, VERY, Morning. I like to get in my exercise and spend some time savoring the possibilities of a new day. The downside is that I work from 2-10pm and it takes me a good 2 hours to “come down” from the excitement of work so my mornings are hard to get up and enjoy but somehow I do it and feel great!

I’m a night person by nature, but since I have to be at work at insanely early hours – 4, 5, or 6 AM depending on which position I’m working – I’m forced to be a “morning” person. As for exercise, I’ll take any advice anyone can give me. I’m exhausted after being on my feet for 8 hours a day at work, and while I can consider all the walking there to be exercise that’s kind of cheating.

I’m a morning person, but not a “get up before dark” person. I like to wake up naturally because it’s light outside and not because an alarm clock rang. Luckily I work from home and can get away with this. I used to wake up earlier, go for a run and get my exercise for the day over with, but now I get most of my exercise with evening walks. A nice long walk around 7:30 pm and then settle down on the couch to watch TV and knit until bedtime – not very exciting, but after the years of driving kids to hockey practice, swiming, piano lessons, etc, it works for me.

I’m definitely a night person! One way I keep up my exercise is put star stickers on my calendar on the days I exercise. It’s simple, but it helps me see when I’m slacking, and also motivates me to see two or three weeks in a row with 4 or 5 stars each!

When I don’t have to work, I’m a night person. I don’t mind getting up early during the summer, but dang it’s difficult hauling my butt out of bed when it’s still dark outside.
To make walking/jogging a little more fun (and put it in perspective), I set a “virtual” destination for myself. I figure out how many miles it will take me to get to a certain city/landmark. Then I keep track of how many miles I walk/jog each month. My last destination/stop was Walnut Grove, MN (b/c I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie). Eventually I plan to “walk” to Yellowstone. Each “stop” gets me a little closer. Some days it’s difficult to get started, but I feel much better afterwards.

I have always been a morning person – but then again, I’ve been in the workforce for over 40 years and forced to do alot in the wee hours. I think if left to my own devices, I would rather stay up late. While I may get up between 5:00 and 6:00 every day, I get MUCH more done in the evening.
In my mind – there’s no such thing as a bad time to walk (or knit)!

Do you have a gym nearby? A 1/2 hour on a bike or an elliptical would beat walking for cardio.

I’m definitely a night person, but since the kids have gone back to school, I find myself not minding mornings quite so much. I’ve also started a goal of having my to-do list for the day finished by noon so I can have some knitting time before they come home.
I find the best way to stick to an exercise routine is to choose one that is realistic for YOU, not for someone else. If you know that you can walk 30 minutes in the morning and that’s it, go for it. After awhile you’ll find that adding an extra 15 minutes is doable because the 30 is already a habit, then you can eventually go up to 60 if that’s your goal. For me, I know that I won’t workout at home, so I either go out and walk, or have a membership to a gym.

I am not a morning person that’s for sure! But I do try to get up an hour early to knit with my coffee before the day starts. I’m teaching morning classes this semester, so that hour early is a little hard to get used to. I used to save my favorite TV shows and watch them on the treadmill, but after knee surgery my doc suggested the pool was a better place for me. I’ve found a really fun water boot camp class, so I actually look forward to getting out of the office and into the pool these days!

I’m a night owl for SURE. Getting up early kills me. Coffee always makes things semi-better, but I have found sometimes it’s a positive attitude that gets me out the door. I went from almost NEVER exercising to getting on the treadmill for at least 45 minutes three times a week, teaching kids yoga twice a week, and doing a cardio hip hop class once a week. It was a rough transition and still can be rough, but having someone do it with you helps. I also use an app called Zombies, Run! when I get on the treadmill. It uses augmented reality to put you right in the middle of a story that involves the zombie apocalypse and encourages you to run for your life! As the story goes on you start to learn more and more about the township you live in, the people around you, and why on Earth the undead are back. It’s compelling stuff. Sometimes I hit the gym just to find out what happens next. The app is for both Andriod and iPhone and I’m addicted!

I got a Fitbit this summer, too! It certainly inspires me to climb ALL the flights of stairs at work every day. I am, by nature, a night person, but with the kids’ school times being what they are, I have to get up early. I will say, though, that I have found again and again that if I don’t exercise in the morning, I don’t get it done – I just can’t seem to make myself do it at night. So twice a week, I get up (far too) early to swim, and I walk on the other mornings.

I would categorize myself as an afternoon-and-evening person. That is the time when I am most awake, creative, and productive. I do love mornings, once I’m awake and if I’ve gotten enough sleep, but it’s the waking up bit tht is so hard for me. I would be a morning person of I could eliminate the waking up bit. Mornings are so peaceful and full of potential, so still and so new (when not preceded by a bout of insomnia).

Finally found an exercise thing I am going to stick to. Deep water walking. We use bells in the water for upper body work and different “walking” in the deep water to tone everything else….I love it and don’t mind going 3 times a week. Hard sometimes when I go after work then get home at 7:30 in the evening. DH is very understanding and usually gets his own supper and I eat healthy. Love the water and its fun.

My favorite thing is to curl up on the couch with my tea and book and read for an hour. Exercising when I come home from work is hard, I agree. I did it for about a month, but stopped. I was just too wiped out from the day and just want to relax. I’ve started walking during my lunch hour and it’s amazing!! It gives me so much more energy to face the afternoon. ( OK for me 7:15 is sleeping in rather than my usual 6:30 alarm wake up.) But the reality is that I’m at my most creative/personally productive late in the evening and typically don’t go to bed before midnight. So from my perspective, I’m a night owl. The main reason I go to bed is because the alarm goes off at 6:30 so I can make it into work at 8.

I live 4 miles from work, so last week I started waking up 15 minutes early and walking 2 miles and then getting a bike for the other 2 miles to work. This will start paying off next week when traffic gets really bad and walking is faster than the bus.

I am definitely a morning person, but still can’t get myself to exercise that early. A few years ago I did it, up at 5am every morning to walk and I lost 50 lbs. Then I stopped… and the weight came back. For two years now, I still have my alarm set to 5am so I can get back on the treadmill, but it hasn’t happened, not even once. It feels like giving up if I change my alarm clock to 6. Funny how our minds work. Good for you for sticking with it!

I’ve always been a night person. I envy morning people. On the rare occasion I get up early, I really enjoy the quiet time before the day becomes hectic.
Exercise is not really my thing. I try to find activities that keep me moving – like hiking and rock climbing.

Definitely a morning person, but I don’t like to leave the house until 11 or so. Of course I DO leave the house earlier than that because I have to be at work at 8:30, but I think my psyche is still at home until 11. If someone comes up with the secret for sticking to an exercise routine please call me immediately!! I need help, major help, in that area!

How about a midday person? I’m not a morning person and not usually an evening person either. I tend to work exercise in during the kids practices. I go to a gym and when I drop one or more off for a practice, then I try to use that time to workout. For the most part it has worked since February.

Weird – I’m technically a morning person but I can’t get my exercise routine to stick either – I’ll have to read through all the other comments to get some good advice.
I’ve tried exercising before work – that does feel good to get it “out of the way” but I’ve also felt good exercising after work to de stress from my day. . .
I hate sweating so that’s kind of hard to avoid if I’m aiming for real results …

I am without a doubt a night person – mornings before 9 am do not exist as far as I’m concerned. Fortunately, I can set my own work hours and so do not have to go into the office at the crack of dawn. 6 weeks ago I had outpatient surgery and had to be at the hospital at 7 am, which meant leaving my house at 6 am, which meant getting up at 5 am (I wasn’t sure there was such an hour in the mornings). I was joking with the anesthesiologist that I wouldn’t need drugs to go back to sleep – I didn’t refuse them though
.
I hate exercise – but it has to be done. I have a “workout buddy” in my office and we go to the gym after work. If one of us doesn’t want to go we bully, cajole, guilt and encourage each other. We try not to let work get in the way if we have to stay late – we simply come back to the office after our workout.

For exercising, I’m neither a morning person (I’m setting up my alarm clock as late as possible to still be in time at work and I can’t motivate myself to loose any precious sleeping minutes for a work-out!), nor an evening person (I’m usually to tired and/or to lazy to do anything after work and evenings are when my knitting happens, so I can’t sacrifice that!). The best solution for me is to work out at lunch time. I’m going to the gym with a co-worker or go for a run during my lunch break. It’s a great escape from work, perfectly cut the day in 2 and I come back refreshed and energized, ready to tackle the rest of my day!
I think the best motivation I’ve got from working out is to see the changes on my body: a more toned, less flabby me and less tight clothes are the best reward! But I have to admit that I don’t feel guilty of buying a well deserved (and not necessary) skein of pretty yarn if I reach my 15-miles a week running goal

I applaud your initiative. I know it is harder than it sounds. When I worked Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, I went to Curves on Tues, Thurs and Sat mornings first thing. But when my kids started college, I needed to work 5/days a week and I learned that I also couldn’t exercise in the evening. No get up and go at all. I do try to go to Zumba one evening or I started learning to tap dance (at 55) and that was also in the evening. They are so much fun and I have the incentive of picking up carry out on the way home so I don’t have to cook that night.
But I now walk every morning – how do I do it? I have a dog. They need to go out rain or shine, winter or summer. The alternative is not pretty.

I really don’t know how to answer the morning or night person question anymore. I used to be a night person and I’m still awake past midnight most nights but I take a nap from 10 to 11:30. Last fall I started getting up between 6:00 and 6:30 which is early for me but then went back to sleeping till 8 during the winter due to health issues which are gone now. I’m now beginning to wake up early again which I really prefer now.

A night person, when the house is quiet. I exercise between work and dinner, knit after dinner.
My solution to exercise – join a gym and make it social. When the nest emptied out, I felt the need for more social interaction with women who shared the same interests. I missed pto meetings and school athletic events. Talking with guys in the office wasn’t the same. Joined a “fitness palace” that was very accepting of “every body”, including the 50+ crowd. Now take a variety of classes – cardio, yoga, pilates weeknights and on Saturday. Knowing people and wanting to hear the latest about what Pam’s daughter’s boyfriend , the college’s dumb policy about meal plans, and the yoga teacher’s two-year old keeps me going back.. Like a “stitch and bitch” for exercise.

I have a white board in my kitchen–it is a good size 3ftw by 2 ft h. I write down all the things that have to be done each day. Exercise (for me that is walking0 IF #1 AND WRITTEN IN RED. I see this board so many times a day that I can not avoid it. I leave my runners, socks, and a full water bottle right on the floor underneath. I’ve done this for years and because it is at the top of the list I usually try to do my walk as soon as possible so I can cross it off. I don’t erase it, but leave the crossed off item as a reminder that I did do what I planned to do. I have done this for years. I sometimes wear a pedometer, but lately have lost a few but have my route so well mapped out . I also record my exercise, food and any aches and pains in a daily journal (I have Crohn’s disease and fibromyalgia so it is important to write things down and to exercise)

i have to do any work out after work. i know it seems harder and longer until i realize that i can not stress about ‘will i get to work on time’ and also realize when i shower after then it is much more relaxing, i eat less at dinner and sleep early.
i also do a time not distance work out.
I dont push with ‘i have to do 2mi each time’ or anything. It is I give myself a 30m time limit. Some days i get over a mile, some days i don’t, sometime i am suprised and get nearly 2 miles in. I just find it is less pressure on me. When i kept doing “No i have to go THIS far” then i’d feel bad when i didn’t get it done and was too hard on myself.

I am a morning person, but I do admit, most days it’s very difficult to get that first foot out of bed. Once I do, I’m pretty much good to go. Some things that help me include varying my route. Your neighborhood looks so picturesque, but mine does not, so I vary the route to keep up the interest. Also I don’t always like going so far and then turning back over the same route again, I bore easily, so lately I’ve been doing a loop from west to north to east to south and then west again back to my house, like a circle with my house somewhere in the middle. Earphones with music or talk radio helps. Probably the very best thing is finding someone to walk with. You start talking and in no time at all the hour is up and you’ve also gotten the benefit of talking about things on your mind (and so has your friend) and you are both refreshed physically and mentally to start your day. My friend can only make it on Thursdays, but it’s great. Happy Walking. P.S. I kicked it up a bit and I’ve lost 17 pounds this summer!

I work out both in the morning and after work. Crazy but true. I usually do a 30 minute HIIT routine (High Intensity Interval Training) which is usually interval running/walking. And then I come home and do a workout DVD for toning. I just find I get rid of the stress of the day doing that and my husband comes home to a happier me. I just do it. I don’t let the voice in my head talk me out of it. I focus on the after effects and that helps me.

I love the fitbit, I come from an obese family and when i went to college i got really thin and stayed that way most of my life (I watched too many family members get sick from not taking care of themselves.) Well about 6 months ago my adrenals and thyroid decided to stop working correctly and I was put on steroids…well i gained 15 pounds in 3 weeks and 25 total so far. as soon as i started gaining i got the fitbit and tracked my exercise and food intake. I keep my calories under 1000 (I am a vegan) and steps as close to 10,000 as i can. I went from a morning person to a nite person on these meds. So what i try to do is get at least short walks in for a total, so if you can’t exercise this will help you at least get some workouts in. I know it isn’t ideal but i learned that many folks on the drugs gain 50 or more pounds and I hate gaining anything but at least this has helped me a bit. I know this is a long way of answering your question, but i think having something to help you like fitbit will help you get at least some exercise in and encourage you to keep it up. it will help you celebrate the exercise that you do get in. …maybe some kind of knitting challenge with health, hmmm sounds like a start of a challenge.

I have a commute of 30 miles to be at work by 7 a.m., then a 10-hour workday, 30 miles slogging back home–where I have about 2.5 hours of “free” time before I have to hit the sack so I can do it all again. Walking would be soooo good for me! Only there’s no sidewalk on our narrow street, that has a 50 mph limit (so most folks are doing 55 or 60). My pal Disco says she’ll walk with me if I want to drive to the cemetary; I sould take her up on it — oh, wait: my “free” time is mostly after dark! Do I really want to be in the cemetary, on foot, after dark? Hmmmm

And sorry – can’t really help you with the exercise since I have much to lose myself. However, I have used a pedometer since February and I will say that has helped me a tremendous amount. Between the heat and West Nile here in DFW the DH and I have been going to indoor malls lately to do the bulk of our walking and it has worked out quite well.
Mostly I just overuse the ‘Just Do It’ phrase. If I wait around until I’m in the mood to exercise/walk it will never happen!

Bicycling is my exercise – at least 20 min 5 days a week (late morning break right before lunch). I work from home so can hop on the old 10 speed attached to a resistance trainer that is in the next room. The convenience of it has made it easy for me to keep to my routine.

While in my 20′s and 30′s, I was a night person, staying up until 2-3 am, working on sewing/quilting/knitting.
Now, in my early 50′s, I’m a morning person. Almost always in bed by 10 or 10:30pm, up at 6am or earlier.
Do my exercise (walking the dogs, yoga) early in the morning. Do most of my knitting after my day job, after 4pm.

It kind of works out ok though because while I do have to go to bed earlier which does cut into my knitting time, I’m so groggy at 5:45 am I sort of miss the fact that I am exercising. Since I hate exercising this is a good thing.

I’m a morning person, most definitely. I even get up extra early for some quiet knitting time before I have to wake up the kids and get our day going. It may seem a little nuts, but usually at the end of the day I am so exhausted that I can’t seem to concentrate on anything. Excersize for me is easy because of my job. I’m a letter carrier and I walk at least 6 hours a day whether I want to or not. To ease the boredom, I usually end up daydreaming about knitting projects while walking all those miles.

I am a NIGHT person!!! Nights are so quiet, there are no interruptions, one can knit or read or exercise with no interruptions. I do not do outside exercise except in january or february, 98 degree weather leaves me without breath. If you can not do ALL that you are supposed to do at least do some. Is better that doing nothing. Be faithful and enjoy yourself. Good Luck and keep us posted about the results.

I’m a night person. I exercise regularly. For me to exercise in the morning, I have to be meeting up with someone else – otherwise I seldom can break free of the bed magnet. I tend to get in a pattern that lasts a few months at a time, and then I switch it up. Right now I run T, Th, and S (usually with others). M and W I bike ride (M is a group ride). Friday I rest. I’ve found running groups, and through them biking groups, through my local running store. I also run (slowly) in local races – that helps motivate me to keep training. Congrats on breaking into the morning workout routine! I have done that for years at a stretch – I suggest you consider what you will do as the days get shorter and colder, so that you can keep getting the exercise. Maybe a treadmill? Good luck!!!!

I love the peaceful hour(s) when I can sit quietly and gather my thoughts, contemplating what is and what needs be, while I watch the morning gradually present itself. It is the hour or so where I can bask in the promise of the day that God has gifted me.

Definitely not a morning person here, but I’ve found I do better with exercising if I just do it in the morning. I always have good intentions in the evening but it’s just to easy to make excuses. My secret to being consistent with exercise ( which I have been for the first time in my life) is twofold: 1. I keep reminding myself how much better I feel, mentally and physically. Plus now that I’m in my 40′s, I feel like it’s essential if I want to feel good and be able to do lots in future years. 2. I find something fun and switch it up whenever it gets boring!!

Morning person – absolutely can’t help myself. The alarm never even goes off. My best time for exercise is early morning, as well. it gives me energy for the day, so that’s what keeps me going. Another big help: your body will start to DEMAND exercise, you’ll feel loguey and unhappy if you skip, so you’ll be saving yourself trouble all day by getting out for your morning walk. It’s so good for your state of mind, too. I find I’m much less tempermental after morning exercise (that’s a very GOOD thing, trust me).
Best wishes, and thanks for all you do!

I am definitely a night person! But, with a son who is on his high school swim team who practices at 5:15 am, I have had to adjust to being a morning person. It’s tough, but he practices at our local YMCA (in their indoor pool), so I drive him there and spend 90 minutes with the weight machines and treadmill. That’s the only way for me to stick to this exercise routine — I”m there so I may as well make it productive!

And I understand the fatigue! the good news is that it’s probably just temporary, while your body adjusts. I’ve been waking up at 6Am everyday and going to bed around 1AM for a while and I’m so used to it now. (My little secrete is a 20-30 min nap every afternoon.)

But to encourage you, here is advice from my health coach: once you make it a habit, you don’t have to think so hard about it any more. If you can keep getting up at the same time every morning, it should get easier after the first month. Good luck with that! Just the fact that you are already walking in the morning shows that you mean it and you will be successful!

Stick to an exercise routine by joining a gym with another person. Carpool every day. That way you know that you have to go because the other person is depending on you to get there.
