Still Loving Socks … and a CONTEST!
Thank you for all of your great book and movie suggestions in last week’s Anniversary contest! I have discovered the benefits of books on tape (or, I guess they call it audiobooks now. Books on tape is so yesterday…) I can walk or knit while listening to good books, and now I have a whole list of titles to explore. We used the Random Number Generator to pick two winners from last week’s comments. We’re sending Sixth Anniversary Kits to Dianne in IN and Leah in MO. Congratulations to you two!
We have a new contest for you again today. (Do you like the weekly contests during our Anniversary Month? We do!) This week’s question is an easy one, I think. What item have you knit or crocheted the most? Socks? Shawls? Sweaters? Blankets? Scarves? Mittens and Gloves? Hats and Cowls? Leave the answer in the comments below and we’ll draw the winner next week. I have two skeins of Wollmeise Lace that we’ll be sending to two winners!
I went to Ravelry to see what the answer would be for me. I’ve missed photoing a few things, but most of what I have knit is on my Rav project page. The answer? Still overwhelmingly socks! Some 60 pairs of socks, about 25 shawls, 30 scarves, 15 gloves/mitts, 10 hats/cowls, a few blankets, a few sweaters, and a few felted bags from the early days. How about you? (You don’t have to give exact numbers – just tell me what you think you have knit the most!)

I guess in my case it has to be scarves…seems I have a thing for scarves. My mom, on the other hand, is a sock lady, definitely!

I have actually knitted more blankets than anything. They take longer so I am guaranteed knitting for a long period of time. Downside, I don’t have as many FO.

Most definitely the thing I knit most is shawls. There are 44 on my Rav page and more that aren’t there.

I just went and tallied all my projects on Ravelry – though I don’t consider myself a dishcloth knitter that much, those are what I’ve made the most. I guess because they’re quick I’ve made more than say sweaters. Second is hats and again, I didn’t think I knit that many!

Until Camp Loopy 2012, I was exclusively a sock knitter — hand knit socks are so soft and cushiony and warm. My 3 Camp Loopy projects were all scarves — sock just did not meet the yardage requirements. I would really like to try a sweater sometime soon.

So, I guess I have probably made more scarves, BUT, not in the last 10 years. . . it’s been more socks. But I haven’t knit as much as some. Trying to get more done!

I was going to say shawls. Checking out my project list on Rav, I have knitted mostly socks. Socks are what got me back into knitting in 2010. I’m also more likely to wear my socks than use one of the shawls I’ve made. Add me to the Sock list.

sigh. the answer, hands down, is socks. I don’t even have to go count or look at projects. It’s socks. Hundreds of socks. all ages and sizes. of socks. Stranded, plain vanilla, lace, cabled, ribbed, toe up, cuff down, skewed. Socks. And this five years after the bold statement I made, and I quote: I will never knit socks! That’s just stupid! Why would anyone want to knit socks?!”
sigh.

Over the course of a year, hats usually win out in the finished objects category, followed by scarves. My sister and her family live in North Carolina, but I don’t see them enough to know their personal tastes. For the last few years, I have sent them a mixed box of knitted goodies (hats, scarves, and gloves) with each object labeled for yarn content and washing instructions. Each person picks the one or two things he or she likes, and everyone seems happy — so far.

What is really sad, though, is that until this year, I didn’t have hat that fit me!!!

I tend to cycle. When I was younger, I knit sweaters. I went through a mitten phase, knitting for charity a few years ago. Since I picked up knitting again I’m at one shawl, one sweater, and 1 pair of socks – an even run
But I expect the balance will swing towards socks, after I finish 2 planned shawls.

Tough question! I think I have more socks than anything else listed on my Ravelry page, but I was knitting for a million years before Ravelry and cranked out a heckuva lot of sweaters then. So I’d say sweaters.
Heather said,
August 17, 2012 @ 10:19 am
Definitely socks! It’s not that they’re necessarily my favorite thing to knit, but I love that I can buy one or two skeins and I know it will be enough for a pair of socks. Plus, if I want a project I can tote around with me, socks are my go to project. So, when I’m not sure what I want to make next or I know I’m going to be traveling, I start a pair of socks.

Rita said,

Neck gear–scarves and shawls that I scrunch up as scarves. I have one-sock-itis, so sock knitting is an uphill battle for me. And I’ve been slacking on my knitting, so my last sock project was not my shining moment. I had put the second sock down for so long that I thought the yarn was stretched too long in a cake, so I tightened my tension…except it was too tight and now the second sock doesn’t fit!!

I think I have knit more shawls than anything else. I know I have more fingering yarn than anything else and it was bought with socks in mind but as I have begun to wear my hand knit socks I realized that 100% was not my friend as much as some nylon so some of that fingering yarn had to become something other than socks so that is why I have more shawls than socks.

Looking at my Ravelry project page (Brilliant idea!): so far, I’ve done 26 hats, 7 pairs of mittens and gloves, 9 scarfs, 19 shawls,14 tops (including sweaters, cardigans and tank tops) and 7 pairs of socks. So I guess, my favorite things to knit are hats! There are instant gratification and I love that. And I’m wearing them from Fall to Spring.
But these days, I’m really into shawl knitting.

the past 10 years or so,most of my knitting has moved to doll sweaters, specifically for 22″ resin bjds (ball jointed dolls). This started because there are so many lace patterns I want to knit and sweaters that I want, and I already have a large accumulation of sweaters made over the past 48 or so years. I lean towards lace or cobweb weight yarn and pick out most lace stitch patterns from Barbara Walker’s books and. And then my dolls need sweaters!
But, as I adore so many hand-dyed sock weight yarns, I keep buying Wollmeise, Skein, and Socktopus (to name just a few) and knit cousins scarfs and shawlettes, for gifts for my cousins. Adding to that my daughter has come to love fingerless mitts, hats .and scarfs with lace borders.

I would say shawls with baby items second. Pre Ravelry, I made baby blankets for all relatives having children and then baby sweaters and hats for relatives and non relatives. I think if I counted up all of them the shawls and baby items would be pretty close.

I thought it would be hats, but looking at my projects, I have tones of neck items: scarves, shawls, and cowls. Surprising as scarves aren’t a favorite to knit, but I have been on a cowl kick lately, and seem to keep getting drawn to shawls as well. They lend themselves well to gift knitting, and I seem to do a lot of that.

What do I knit the most? I would love to say that I knit something wonderful… shawls, socks, mittens, etc. Something wonderful that kept a loved one war and cozy all winter.
The reality is that what I knit the most is toys. I knit lots of toys. Everyone in my family has some little toy that I have made them. Turkeys, sheep, snowmen, dolls. There is something wonderful about the softness in a person’s face when they receive a toy. It is amazing.
Maybe some day my family members will be able to stay warm.

That’s about double what I’ve knit for myself. Since I started knitting socks, however, that may be changing. Regardless, I started with hats and mitts, and now do mostly garments and socks.

Socks, for sure! At least 20 pairs a year for the last 9 years. Most of them are just ribbed “bread and butter” socks that I give away. A bit selfish perhaps – but the socks I knit from all those lovely patterns we have are for me – the socks I knit for “therapy” on long plane trips or waiting, I give away to anyone who’ll have them. Socks are my ‘meditation’. Salam wa sa’aadah

Squares that can be used as dishcloths or washcloths – I use a whole skein of cheap cotton and it winds up too big for a washcloth but too small for a dishcloth. They are great ‘walking around’ knitting because I use seed stitch and I don’t have to look at it. I do so many that I usually don’t even put them on Ravelry anymore. I use them for random acts of kindness – “want a washcloth?” or put them with a bar of handmade soap and tie with a ribbon for a small gift.

That’s actually a tough one. I love to knit socks, and I know I’ve done many. But, having 5 boys, the oldest 14, I know I’ve also made many hats and mittens. Probably more hats than mittens. And I can’t rely on Ravelry for accuracy as (gasp!) I was making things long before Ravelry came around. So, I’ll have to go with hats and / or socks as the things I’ve made the most of.

You know, I can never have too many socks but hats are starting to rule out the socks, something about how you can really spruce up the simple construction with colorwork, cables, and lace and it sits prominently on the head rather than tucked away under pantslegs and inside shoes.

I’m definitely a sock junkie! I always have at least two pairs on needles – one mindless plain “vanilla” sock and one that requires thinking. If I were stranded on a desert island, these are the two kinds of projects I would want with me!

Has to be socks – I’ve probably knit close to 25 pair. They’re something I wear daily during the cold weather (well, as cold as it gets in the SF Bay Area). With so many patterns to choose from, and such luscious yarns that you entice me with, it continues to be fun.

Socks. I don’t even need to check.
Oddly enough, scarves might be #2. Even though they pile up, they are as necessary here as socks…so as long as I don’t forget I have a particular scarf, it’ll get worn. Unlike some of my jumpers and cardis that get tossed by the wayside once they’re done…

My knitting ADD really shows when I look at my Ravelry projects. I’m split between shawls/scarves and sweaters, with some socks, hats, gloves, blankets, and stuffed animals thrown in for good measure. Apparently if it can be knit, I want to knit it. (My husband would categorize that as a problem, but I’m gonna call it a personal strength!)

I have really started to branch out with my knitting, but to date my answer would have to be scarves. When my daughter was a senior in high school (2002) I knit a scarf for every girl in her graduating class. I had knit a scarf for her that all the girls loved so I said if they picked the color I’d buy the yarn and knit one for each of them. I’ve branched out into shawls, sweaters and baby hats. My daughter picks the pattern and yarn for the hat for a friend of hers who is pregnant, and I knit it for her to give as a gift. My next leap? Socks. Don’t like those double point needles, but I know if I master them, I’ll be able to branch out with other projects. I’m a magic loop gal for baby hats, but want to become comfortable with double points.

Mostly scarves and then hats (many chemo caps) and baby blankets. I’ve completed one pair of socks — given away as a gift, and I have three more pairs on the needles now. I have a basket full of knitted bowls ready to felt for Christmas gifts.

I think it’s cowls: I knit a slough of ‘em one year for holiday gifts! And of course I kept a few too. Pretty soon I’ll be knitting a larger, infinity-style cowl for a buddy–can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I love to knit “new” patterns and techniques. I often tell myself, “NO MORE SHAWLS”, but I can’t help myself-I love shawls, shawl patterns and the “easiness” of shawl knitting.:-). I have knit several sweaters, many socls, hats, purses (felted and not), dish clothes, dish towels, doillies, blankets, ponchos, mittens, gloves, scraves, but shawls win!

Socks. I must have knit at least a hundred pairs. I have a stash drawer full of socks for gifts, in all different sizes and colors. I always have at least one pair going, if not two.

Absolutely socks for me. They’re so portable and quick. After socks it would be mittens. My extended family loves the mittens I knit and I’ve always got a request for a new pair for Christmas or birthdays.

Crochet would definately be doilies in the pineapple pattern with cotton crochet thread.
Knitting – tie between socks and shawls. I always have both on the needles. I’m not crocheting much the last couple years since I improved in my knitting skills.

I knit constantly and enjoy all of it. Socks is a real favorite as well as shawls and sweaters, but I love, love, love designing and knitting my own collection of blankets. My Story Blanket is my real star. I originally called it Jakes Hockey Blanket but I’m trying to put together a collection of my blanket designs and in the collection it will become a Story blanket because you can tell any story you want through your imagination and your knitting. It’s great isn’t it; knitting I mean.

I think it’s a toss up between sweaters and blankets. Every new baby gets a blanket and there have been a lot in the last 9 years. But the sweaters are mostly for me. Socks and shawls are becoming the go-to projects now.

If it weren’t for all the hats I’ve done for charity, it would definitely be socks. So, a mixed answer –
Most knitted for me and my family — socks!
Most knitted for others — hats!
I’m doing a lot more sweaters and shawls though, so watch out!

When knitting for other people, I’d say hats, scarves and cowls, but for personal knitting sweaters just eeked out a win over socks, because I love to knit both of them so much! There are such an abundance of cool sweater and sock patterns out there so I never have to knit the same thing twice
