Whirlwind Day and a CONTEST!
Do you ever feel like you stepped onto an out-of-control merry-go-round? (Or yarn winder, if one were able to sit on a yarn winder….) That’s what this week has felt like. Busy, busy, busy. Maybe I just need to sit and chill and knit for awhile tonight. I’ve been working on my Cabled Rib Wrap and not working on my Charleston Tea (although I need to). I’m also ready to get another scarf on the loom. The purple one from last week is done. I’ll show it to you as soon as I wash and block it. I had fun working on it!
It’s time for our October Blog Contest, and I thought it would be fun to give away a skein from our newest indie dyer. I’m happy to say that we’re adding Fibernymph Dye Works to the shop. We’ll have Lisa’s beautiful semi-solids, striping yarns, and also her awesome roving. This line will be going up soon, but you have a chance to win a skein before it goes up! Leave a comment below and we’ll draw a winner next week. You can pick the color you’d like, from these five pictured. (Left to Right: Brigid’s Cloak, Autumn Harvest, Nothing But Blue Skies, Elphaba’s Corset, and An Air of Elsewhere.) The October Blog Question is: Do you have any other needle arts hobbies besides knitting? (Spinning? Weaving? Quilting? Counted Cross Stitch? Needlepoint? Rug Hooking?) To enter the drawing, leave your answer in the comments below. We’ll email you if we draw your name next week.

Yeah for a new Indie dyer… I heard so many good things about Fibernymph Dye Works, that I can’t wait to try it! When I’m not knitting, I like to weave. I’ve got a rigid heddle loom and it’s a great tool to use up some of my out-of-control stash. It’s a fast and easy way to make beautiful scarves!

Knitting is my constant hobby, but I crochet on occasion (especially afghans) and I used to sew a LOT (pretty much my whole summer wardrobe), but it has been a while since the sewing machine has seen daylight. I’ve done some other needle crafts, but not enough to classify them as a hobby – they were mostly one-offs….crewel, counted cross stitch on plastic canvas, rug hooking. I think that’s it – unless you count macrame in the 80s! LOL. Not really needlework, but fibre related.

In one of my ‘previous lifetimes’, I have done counted cross stitch, needlepoint, weaving on a ‘weave-it’ square, and embroidery … in my current lifetime my quilting and knitting stashes have taken over my life. I suppose I have been knitting the longest … since age 7 (I think) and only learned to quilt from the church ladies when 31 year old DS was born.

I used to do crewel and needlepoint, then counted cross stitch, lots of sewing, then smocking in a big way (sold smocked children’s clothes at craft fairs, etc and from our fabric shop). Quilted just enough to say I knew how. I know how to crochet but knitting has been my sole passion for the past 20 years.

The bright orange plant hanger is still a vivid memory, as are the embroidered blue jeans! My mom taught me all of these crafts, she was amazing.

Besides knitting, I spin and crochet. Have crocheted and knitted since I was about 5 years old and learned to spin after college. I am especially interested in 19th century textile traditions and have done some projects that combine knitting and crochet. There is always something new to try and learn.

I’ve been a quilter for over twenty years and still have boxes of fabric stash mixed in with my newly growing yarn stash. I think it’s mainly an attraction to colors and the oh-so-many delicious ways to combine them, which both quilting and knitting fulfill in me. I also do a little embroidery, spinning and crochet, though knitting seems to have taken over in the past five years.

Currently, I knit and spin. I have, in the past, gone through stages of intensive crocheting (and still have the afghans as evidence). When I was a lot younger, I sewed some of my own clothes (not very well) but, surprisingly, have little urge to quilt; weaving, on the other hand, strangely calls out to me.

I always knit & crochet at the same time but when I’m on yarn sabbatical, I’m cross-stitching which has been my other passion for 25 years now, in particular reproduction samplers. I’ve never been able to do both passions at the same time though for some reason – it’s either knit/crochet OR cross-stitch, never both at the same time. I’ve been knitting and crocheting exclusively though for the last 2 years. I’ve felt so guilty abandoning my silk floss for yarn, but when I see another new yarn shipment posted on your blog I wonder if I will ever abandon my socks again…

That Autumn Harvest color is BEAUTIFUL – same colors my daughter in law had in her flowers and church flowers for their wedding just last Oct. 29th. Would love to make something for her and for me out of that (mother / daughter matching something)
. I also crochet. Would love to learn to spin and weave. I used to work with a woman years ago who was into weaving – she even made a skirt an matching vest and wore to work – was beautiful!
I make wall hanging quilts – both picture quilts and checkerboard quilts with wider borders (regulation game board size checkerboard in middle with borders – you can hang on the wall for decoration and then with my easy mounting – can take easily off the wall hanger to play checkers with (even color match the wood playing pieces – remember the sound of wood checkers clinking together

I crocheted when I was a little kid – first thing I remember doing. I took up knitting for a while in college then moved on to Crewel embroidery and from there needlepoint. I still have unfinished needlepoint projects hoping I’ll pick them up again. I started knitting again about 10 years ago and when I discovered Loopy and knitting blogs and Spring Fling, I was completely hooked.

I did counted crossstitch for many years but became kind of OCD with the counting so stopped. Everything was taking forever because I counted 10 times. I may try again and see if I’ve gotten over it. Yes, I am an avid embroiderer. I’ve dabbled in spinning and quilting too and sew on occasion. I also did crochet many moons ago but somehow lost the muscle memory after knitting for three years. That probably has to do with how one should hold a crochet hook versus a knitting needle. Anyway, if the Loopy Ewe wanted to expand into embroidery supplies that would be awesome.

Wow. I made that picture bigger to check out the colors, and they are ALL gorgeous. Since I have to pick only one, I pick Brigid’s Cloak. With regard to the October question, I recently made a small baby quilt for a friend, and I’m working on a big quilt top for myself. They’re very simple–just squares and a few strips, really– but figuring out a sewing machine is enough of a challenge! I am enjoying the quilts, but nothing takes the place of knitting. Thanks for hosting the giveaway and for introducing me to this pretty yarn!

I can sew (the brown corduroy pantsiut I made in high school probably dates me!) and I can cross-stiitch, but all I ever want to do is knit! My last sewing project was a ladybug costume for now 17yr old DD or Halloween at age 4 or so….and cross-stitch has been in the closet for decades now! Give me yarn and needles any day;)

Oddly, knitting wasn’t my first needle art. I grew up quilting and working cross-stitch and embroidery. (Mom and Dad were old fashioned! Ha!) College and the military got in the way, and everything fell by the wayside except for my cross-stitch. I picked my quilting back up, and have also added hardanger embroidery and SPINNING to the repertoire. I definitely don’t get bored!

I mainly just knit now-a-days… I went through big counted cross-stitch and needlepoint phases in my 20′s (yes, that was a long time ago), seems like I’ve known how to crochet forever, but I don’t do it much anymore – I just like knitting better. And I sew, although again, not often anymore. I’m sure I’ll be getting a small loom before 2013 is done, I just need to gather more info and stop spending ALL my money on yarn

I have a dark and secret past doing cross-stitch, needlepoint, and sewing. I have what I hope is a brighter future as a spinner — in the past few years, I have acquired a beautiful drop spindle, some lovely roving, and a how-to-spin book, but haven’t actually stepped up to the plate. My crocheting is limited to finished knitted objects . . .

For me, spinning is my ‘real’ second hobby. I have done cross stitch and have a second project just started and I have a vintage sewing machine found at Goodwill with a pile of fabric wanting to become skirts and jammy pants…but its the spinning that is my go-to when my knitting needs a break!

I love knitting and spinning equally! I started knitting first, but spinning is a whole other world. I also weave on a rigid heddle loom, and I’m glad to see you feature one in your blog from time to time. I also do crewel embroidery and needlepoint. Counted cross-stitch is gorgeous stuff, but it’s beyond me. The people who do those tiny, delicate stitches produce artwork. Maybe someday….

I have a large loom, but I have never learned how to use it. My mother gave it to me thinking I would use up my stash or at least bring it down to a manageable size. Must be something Freudian about why I don’t use it. That yarn is so beautiful – looks good enough to eat!

I guess I started it when they got engaged (almost a year before the wedding) but something happened….and I didn’t finish it until they had been married 7 years!! Now, in my defense I will say that in the meantime I made a quilt for my then unborn granddaughter (even before they even TALKED) about kids, and a small wall hanging for my mother, oh, and I starated another double-bed sized quilt with friends….so there you have it! Thanks.

Oooh, Brigid’s Cloak looks awesome! (I love my greens…) I crochet as well, but I mostly just do that for trims or for sculptural pieces. I have some needlepoint experience and do enjoy that, especially when it’s patterned stitches and not just plain old tent stitch. I’ve done two “lace” needlepoint pieces that I enjoyed very much. I have several unfinished pieces and I seldom get the urge to work on them. I tried to get into counted cross-stitch, but it was too much like hand-sewing, which I do not like at all. I think it was the “thread” versus “yarn” thing too.
Janet said,

I love pieceing and quilting but after moving into a condo, I didn’t have room for a sewing room and it is no fun to spend more time “getting out and putting back” than quilting so I don’t do it anymore. My other love is Hardanger embrodiery but as I have aged it became too hard on the eyes. Now my passion is knitting and especially knitting socks. Also, I can leave yarn laying about and it looks decorative. My knitting is a great way to pass time in the winter and and have warm garments and gifts too.

You name it, I’ve done it! I’ve been doing latch-hooks since I was a child and even my husband is currently working on one. I’ve been doing cross-stitch since high school and love it. I just wish it didn’t take so very long. I’ve recently been gifted some embroidery items so I’ve just started learning how that all works. It belonged to a friend’s mother who recently passed away and he wanted me to have it. I want to finish some of the items and give them back to him once they are complete. Here’s hoping I can do her memory justice!

I want to learn to do bobbin lace (I have a starter kit but haven’t played with it yet) and to tat someday. Crochet is the only one that hasn’t grabbed ne at one time or another. I do a lot of one-of-a-kind custom art quilts. Used to do the conventional one, then decided to do art ones. When a customer orders one, I first do up a drawing for their approval. When they are happy I choose a wide variety of fabrics for depth, shadow & the diverse details & begin assembly. So far the largest one was queen size. Currently working on a panda design & a farm tractor. Have done several sport ones & some child subjects. My favorite was from a photo of a deer, done totally to scale.
I also enjoy crosstitching a photo onto aida cloth. Did my very first one before it was the thing to do, of our first granddaughter more than 23 years ago. She now has it in her own home. Working on one of her three sons together.

I am trying to learn how to spin. I bought a wheel about 25 years ago and it has been a decorative item in my living room but now I am trying to work it. I also use to do needlepoint, counted cross stitch. I had to give them up because I was having trouble seeing well enough to do them. I have also crotched. However, knitting is my first love.

Knitting is my first love, but I also love to needlepoint (also a wool yarn habit). My mother taught me to needlepoint before she taught me to knit. I created a miniature oriental rug on 24 count canvas (that’s really small!), which is a replica of a Kilim rug hanging in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO. It won a second place nod at the Arapahoe County Fair in 2010.

I just learned how to spin on a drop spindle (last Sunday). I love it and am practicing as much as I can in between knitting Halloween socks for my nieces. I can’t wait until they offer a class with spinning wheels and I want to be ready for it. In the past I’ve also done a lot of counted cross stitch, embroidery and needlepoint. My maternal grandmother taught me to crochet, but I was never able to really get the hang of it. My paternal grandmother tried to teach me to knit, but she lived across town (the other grandmother was next door) and so I couldn’t see her often enough to learn (and once I was old enough to drive, I was “too cool” to want to let her teach me to knit – what a fool!). She also tatted lace and in hindsight I wish I’d asked her to teach me that as well. I like to think that my grandmothers are both smiling down from Heaven when I’m knitting or doing other needlework.

I seem to have run the gamut of needle crafts during the course of my lifetime. Both of my boys had needlepoints I made for their births. A few years later I started quilting and making curtains and pillows for around the house. When the boys started wrestling in high school I needed a more portable hobby, so I started knitting. Now I feel antsy if I don’t have something on my needles.

I do crochet sometimes to make stuffed squeaky dog toys or once to make a cotton liner inside a newly knitted wool hat I could not stand against my skin! Late comer, but to answer your question – YES! I started as a crocheter, then branched into counted cross-stitch and needlepoint. At some point I added in latch-hooking, and a handful of years ago tried my hand at a weird type of rug hooking I bought as a kit. It’s still sitting unfinished on a shelf in my basement. I tried knitting back several years ago when we were preparing to move, and I had packed up all my crocheting. I found I just needed to do something with yarn, and bought a little learn to knit kit and taught myself.

I’ve done cross stitch for over 30 years and have many beautiful projects to show for it. I bought a sewing machine and serger about 10 years ago, and have been trying to learn to sew. But I find reading patterns difficult, and there’s so much to know that it can be very frustrating and discouraging at times. I also tried my hand at jewelry making. I bought a ton of supplies, but never got very good at it. I still make a few things now and again, mostly out of guilt for having such a huge stash. I tried paper crafts, like making cards and gift tags, for a short while, but found it too boring. In 2009 I learned to knit. I’ve become fairly obsessed, and enjoy knitting immensely. I have met many wonderful knitters at classes and through my knitting guild. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m having a blast.

I just recently learned to knit, but also crochet and cross stitch. I used to love to sew and made many items for me and my children when they were small. Now since I have learned to knit I absolutely love it even though just still a beginner.

Knitting is the only one for me. I don’t have enough time to knit nearly as much as I’d like, so I don’t really want to get into any others. But I suppose picking up a little crochet at some point is inevitable for some finishing work and borders and such.

I have dabbled with spinning and once did very basic weaving, but I have a substantial quilting and x-stitch stash that together almost matches my yarn stash. I guess that is to be expected when my aunt used to own a x stitch store and my mom worked as a seamstress.

I would love to win Bridgette’s Cloak. Yes, I do a lot of counted cross stick and I have been crocheting since I was a child (that’s a lot of years). I also enjoy doing some embroidery and candlewicking. Pretty much if it involves a needle or hook and thread or yarn I enjoy it.

I knit, crochet, drop spin, wheel spin, cross stitch, and hand quilt (a bit). I LOVE the “An Air of Elsewhere” colorway!

I only knit now though I think spinning and dyeing would be fun if I were able . The beads have been so fun to add. The nouveau Beaded caplet used 3000 beads and I added two sections so my count was even higher.

Quilting is my newest hobby – too bad it cuts into the knitting time.

An Air of Elsewhere…. Ah what a lovely name. I just started spinning, if you can call it that. I really am taking fluffy fiber and turning it into lumpy fiber — time will fix that I hope.

Spinning, and I’m getting back into hand sewing and embroidering clothes (a la Alabama Chanin). Go crafts!

Anything with a threaded needle or fibre. I sat down to do some mending the other day and realized how much I miss handsewing. There simply isn’t enough ways to make time for everything my imagination brings me.

So many options – I like to spin and weave, and have always enjoyed sewing.
